Services were held for Dr. William R. Ueberroth, 47, who died May 14 in the Reading Hospital, where he was a patient. A resident of Hummingbird Road, Wyomissing, he was the husband of Lisa A. (Adis) Ueberroth. Born in Allentown, he was a son of William A. and Nancy (Metzgar) Ueberroth, Stroudsburg. He operated a family dentistry practice in Birdsboro for 23 years. Ueberroth was a 1977 graduate of Penn State University, earning a bachelor's degree in biology, and a 1981 graduate of Temple School of Dentistry. He served as a coach for Wyomissing youth football, basketball and baseball teams and was a member of the board of the baseball league. Ueberroth was a member of Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom, Wyomissing. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Joshua A. and Benjamin E., both at home. Other survivors include three sisters. The Bean Funeral Homes Inc., Sinking Spring, was in charge of the arrangements.

Services were held in the Leibensperger Funeral Home, Hamburg, for Richard H. Uhler, of Clermont, Fla., who died March 21 in South Lake Hospital, Clermont, where he had been a patient for two days. Burial was in Ziegel's Union Cemetery, Weisenberg Township. Born in Weisenberg Township, he was a son of the late Richard C. and Helen M. (Leslie) Uhler. Until retiring, he was a self-employed painter and paper-hanger for many years. Surviving are three sisters, Roma M. (Uhler) Berger, with whom he resided; Esther H. (Uhler) Uberti, Hamburg; and Sarah J. (Uhler) Kerchner, Kempton.

Mrs. George Ulmer, nee Barto, of Reading, died Tuesday from gangrene, the result of scraping a callous growth on her foot. She was the mother of Mrs. Charles Heffner of this city.

Betty Ulrich, 89, a former Reading teacher, died July 9 at 11:30 a.m. in the Skilled Care Unit of Evangelical Congregational Church Retirement Village, Myerstown, Lebanon County. She had been a resident at ECC Village's Stone Ridge Campus since 1989. Her husband, Calvin H. Ulrich, died Oct. 26, 1985. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Cornelius F. Sr. and Bessie M. (Shank) Straub. Ulrich, formerly of Reading, had been employed for 21 years as a school teacher in the Reading School District, working from 13th and Union Elementary, retiring in 1978. She was a member of Frieden's Lutheran Church, Myerstown. She was a former member of the consistory, choir and bell choir at St. Mark's United Church of Christ, Reading. Ulrich was a 1934 graduate of Reading High School; received a degree in home economics from Albright College in 1938; and an elementary education degree from Kutztown State Teacher's College. She served on the Foster Grandparents Advisory Council of Reading. Ulrich is survived by four sons: Thomas C., Sellersville, Bucks County; J. Michael, Barto; James R., Reading; and Sinking Spring Chief of Police William C., Muhlenberg Township. Other survivors include a twin sister, Ruth E. (Straub) Shemanski, Wilmington, N.C. There are also nine grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Memorial services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Mark's UCC. Private burial will be in Charles Evans Cemetery. Bean Funeral Homes Inc., Reading, is in charge of arrangements.

Harold F. Ulrich, 86, formerly of Millcreek Township, Lebanon County, died May 4 at 4:18 p.m. in St. Joseph Medical Center, where he had been a patient two days. He was taken to the medical center from Spruce Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, West Reading, where he had resided six years. His wife, Betty J. (Saul) Ulrich, died Aug. 25, 1988. Born in Millcreek Township, he was a son of the late George W. and Elsie May (Frelich) Ulrich. Ulrich was the owner-operator of a dairy and potato farm in Millcreek Township for many years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of St. Daniel's Lutheran Church, Heidelberg Township. Ulrich was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. There are no immediate survivors. Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Lamm & Witman Funeral Home Inc., Wernersville. Burial will be in Millbach Community Cemetery, Lebanon County.

Margaret M. Ulrich, 96, a resident of Phoebe Berks Village, Wernersville, since 1998, formerly of Spring Township, died Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. in Phoebe Berks Health Care Center Inc., Wernersville. Her husband, Paul A. Ulrich, died Feb. 5, 1984. Born in Blue Marsh, Lower Heidelberg Township, she was a daughter of the late Irvin J.H. and Katie Viola Elizabeth (Riegel) Sheidy. Ulrich was employed for 30 years as a seamstress by the Gotham Hosiery Co., Reading, retiring in 1970. She was a member of Epler's United Church of Christ, Bern Township. Surviving are a son, Eric S., Leesport; and three daughters: Betty M. (Ulrich) Adams and Doris (Ulrich) Hartz, both of Spring Township; and Pam (Ulrich) Dunlop, West Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Other survivors include 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Richard P. Ulrich, in 1988. Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in Lamm & Witman Funeral Home Inc., Wernersville. Burial will be in Epler's Church Cemetery, Bern Township.

Robyn L. Ulrich, 54, Lower Heidelberg Township, died of natural causes Aug. 16 at 6:20 a.m. in Select Specialty Hospital, Lancaster, where she had been a patient since June 2. She was the wife of William I. Ulrich. Born in West Reading, she was a daughter of Leon Druckenmiller, San Diego, and the late Elverda (Christ) Druckenmiller and stepdaughter of the late Nelson LeRoy. Ulrich was employed as a sales clerk in the children's department by John Wanamaker's, Wyomissing, last working in 1988. She was a 1968 graduate of Wilson High School. Ulrich was a member of the New Life Fellowship Church, Ephrata, where she was a Sunday school teacher. She is also survived by a son, William C., Sinking Spring. Other survivors include a brother, Gregory LeRoy, Reading; and two sisters, Linda (LeRoy) Witkowsky, Colony Park, and Carol (LeRoy) Brossman, Muhlenberg Township. There is also a grandson. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Calvary Bible Fellowship Church, Lower Heidelberg Township. Burial will be in Heidelberg Cemetery, Heidelberg Township. Lamm & Witman Funeral Home Inc., Wernersville, is in charge of arrangements.

Henry S. Umbenhauer, 205 North 2nd street, Reading, died of a complication of diseases following an operation at the Reading hospital on Friday evening. He was aged 69 years and was employed as chief buyer for C. K. Whitner Co.., for the last 25 years. His widow, Mary Jane, nee Sharle, a daughter, Sue S., wife of A. E. Bailey, and one son, William, survive. Four brothers and one sister also survive.

Janet Jean Umbenhouer, 64, formerly of Muhlenberg Township, died May 20 at 12:15 a.m. in Berks Heim Annex, Bern Township, where she had resided since Sept. 16. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Charles R. and Margaret D. (Anderson) Symons. Umbenhouer was employed for more than 20 years as a waitress at the 5th Street Diner, Muhlenberg Township, and the West Reading Diner. She was last employed for four years as a cafeteria worker at Kutztown University, retiring in 2000. She was a 1959 graduate of Muhlenberg High School. Surviving are two sons, Shawn R. Knowles, Philadelphia, and Daryl G. Knowles, Reading; and four daughters: Susan J. (Knowles) Dougherty, Muhlenberg Township; Sharon L. (Knowles) Hummel, Reading; Kimberly S. (Knowles) Althouse, Laureldale; and Jennifer A. (Knowles) Bolich, Shoemakersville. Other survivors include a sister, Alice L. Symons, Hyde Park; and a brother, Donald R. Symons, Laureldale. There are also seven grandchildren. Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., Laureldale. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton.

Elvin R. "Ellie" Umberger Jr., 61, of 556 Church Rd., Reading, died Saturday at home. Born in Pottsville, he was a son of the late Elvin and Dorothy David Umberger. He was a graduate of Pottsville High School. He was a mechanic for bowling alleys in the area, first at the Shillington Fire Company Bowling Alley for 20 years and later at Bowl-O-Rama, Exeter Township, for eight years, last working on Friday. He was a self-employed magician for children's parties for 30 years. A daughter, Sharon Lynn Umberger, died in 1980. Surviving are three daughters, Wendi S. Umberger, Karen J. Umberger and Regina A. Munoz, all of Reading; four brothers, Irvin, Minersville, Robert, Maryland, Wayne, Centerport, and Ronald, Wernersville; a sister, Dawne Sattizahn, Pine Grove; 15 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday from Lutz Funeral Home Inc., Reading. Interment will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maiden Creek Township.

Alfred Unger passes away at Strausstown. Strausstown, Nov. 13 (Special). - Alfred Unger, a highly respected citizen of this place, died from Apoplexy at 6 a. m. today, aged 72 years, 10 months and 26 days. He was a retired farmer. There survive his widow, Esther (nee DeTurk), two sons: Jacob J., superintendent of schools of Vineland, N. J., and Calvin A. Unger, this place, and one brother, Franklin P. Unger, Reading. Funeral, Thursday, Nov. 18, at 10 a. m., with services and interment at Zion's (Blue Mountain) Church, where deceased was a member of the Lutheran congregation. Revs. Ira W. Klick and Amandus Leiby will officiate. Undertaker C. V. Reber, this place, has charge.

Daniel H. Unger, Fruit Farm Owner, Dies at 64
A funeral service was held yesterday for Daniel H. Unger, 64, Sixth and Essarkay Streets, Boyertown, who died Friday afternoon at home after an illness of three years.
Mr. Unger was the husband of Jennie M. (Barton) Unger. He was born in Boyertown, a son of the late George W. and Legora (Deppen) Unger.
He was a fruit grower and operated Unger's Fruit farm, Boyertown RD, for many years, retiring in 1964 because of illness.
Mr. Unger was a member of Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, Boyertown, former member of Boyertown School Board and a former director of Farmer's National Bank, Boyertown.
For 19 years he was a member of the board of directors of [Pottstown] Medical Center North until retiring in 1963. He operated the Hill Crest School of Riding, Colebrookdale township, for five years.
Mr. Unger was a member or former member of the following organizations: Boyertown Lions Club, where he was a charter member and past president; Pottstown Aircraft Owners and Pilots, incorporated, Northeast River Yacht Club in Maryland, Berks-Lehigh Cooperative Fruit Growers association, where he was a former director, East Central Fruit Growers' cooperative, Maryland, the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia and the Maryland Horticultural societies and the Berks County Fruit Growers' association.
Surviving with his wife are three daughters: Faye, wife of Martin M. Murphy, New Berlinville; Nancy M., wife of James R. Christ, Hill Church and Audrey A., wife of Peter F. Furguson, 315 West Sixth Street, Boyertown; a sister, Laura, wife of William Parkinson, Allentown and 14 grandchildren.
Private services were held in L. W. Ott Funeral home, 111 North Reading Avenue, Boyertown, with the Rev. Dean A. Allen, pastor of Good Shepherd UCC, Boyertown, officiating. Entombment followed in Fairview Mausoleum, Boyertown.

West Lawn, Feb. 6. - Esther (nee DeTurk), widow of Alfred Unger, formerly of Strausstown, died here at the residence of her son, Calvin A., after a brief illness of pneumonia, aged 74 years, 8 months and 28 days. She is survived by two sons, Jacob K., Vineland, N. J., and Calvin, West Lawn; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. James W. Betram, Strausstown. Funeral Director C. N. Lamm has charge.

West Lawn, Feb 10 - The funeral of Esther (nee DeTurk), widow of Alfred Unger, took place from the residence of her son, Calvin A., at this place. The remains reposed in a fine square-cornered oak casket, with full bar extension bronze handles and plate and satin lining, were attired in a fine black dress and covered with an eiderdown slumber robe. The tributes were: Spray of wax lilies, Willing Workers of Strausstown; galax wreath and carnations, sons and families; spray, carnations, grandchildren. The bearers at the house were William Stricker, William Walters, Milton Albright, Albert Stoudt, Frank Noll and George Reinert; at the church, John H. Stahl, Jacob B. Dierwechter, Emanuel S. Borkey, Michael H. Klahr, Peter Rollman and Caleb B. Degler. Servies were held at the house by Rev. J. W. Lazarus, and thence the cortege proceeded to Zion's Union Church, Strausstown. Further services were held by Rev. Ira W. Klick. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining. The funeral was very largely attended. Funeral Director C. N. Lamm had charge.

Harry B. Unger, Jr., 15, son of Harry B. and Effie M., nee Heiser, Unger, died yesterday at his parents' home in Topton. The boy was born in Topton and was a member of St. Stephen's Reformed church. He attended Topton public schools. Besides his parents, Harry is survived by three sisters and two brothers: Annie, wife of George Nolf, Mertztown; Paul J., Kutztown; Irene L., Donald J. and Mae, wife of Howard helbert, all of the home.

John Frederick Unger, long a prominent Philadelphia businessman, died on Saturday at his summer home at Ontelaunee, near Leesport, Berks county. He was a son of the long deceased Thomas Under and was born at the Unger place between Macungie and East Texas, 87 years ago. Albert Unger, who recently retired from farming the homestead farm, is a brother. He moved to East Texas. The older brother who just died was identified in surveying railroads and later engaged in the preserving business in Philadelphia and was very successful. He was one of the prominent members of the Union League during the Civil War, and took a leading part in the proceedings of the Pennsylvania German Society. Frederick W. Unger, author and traveler, is a son. Three daughters also survive, one of them being the wife of Rev. Edwin A. Gernant, a former pastor of Zion Reformed Church, Allentown, now residing at Towanda.

Richard L. Unger, 65, retired co-owner of Berks Welding Supply, died of natural causes July 23 in Reading Hospital. Unger, of Wyomissing resident and formerly of Phoenixville and Norristown, was the husband of Darlyn D. (Yoder) Unger. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Arthur C. and Mary H. (Potts) Unger. He was also predeceased by his stepmother, Martha (Kramer) Unger. Unger joined Berks Welding Supply, now Airgas, in 1960. He became co-owner in the early 1960s and as executive vice president, Unger was responsible for opening and operating several new locations. He also oversaw sales for Berks Welding stores in Reading, Norristown, Harrisburg, Pottsville, Coatesville and Lancaster. After the Airco Division of British Oxygen purchased the corporation in 1987, he served as general manager until his retirement from Airco. Unger was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, where he was former lay leader and vestry member. He was a 1957 graduate of Mount Penn High School. Unger served in the Pennsylvania Air National Guard and was a life member of the 148th Fighter Squadron Association. He was a former director and vice president of the Greater Berks Food Bank and head of the building committee for the agency's new Tuckerton facility. Unger was a member of the Greater Berks Chamber of Commerce and former chairman of the Reading Section of the American Welding Society. Also surviving are a daughter, Brenda L. Unger, Bridgewater, N.J., and a son, Robert A., Erie. There are also three grandchildren. Memorial services will be Tuesday at 11 in Trinity Lutheran Church. Sanders Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Unger, daughter of Isaac & Maria (Wiehler) Lengel, was born in Upper Tulpehocken township December 8, 1846, baptized May 23, 1847, and confirmed in the Salem Lutheran Church of Bethel Township April 9, 1864. She married Ira M. Unger December 30, 1871, and died at Strausstown August 31, 1911, aged 64y8m23d.

Suzanne P. Unger, 58, died of natural causes June 13 at 11:34 p.m. in her residence in Reading. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late John and Helen (Urose) Katz. Unger was employed for the past seven years as a clerk by Turkey Hill, Reading, last working Thursday. She was a graduate of Reading High School. Surviving are two daughters, Denise A. (Unger) Latshaw and Kelly L. (Unger) Holmes, both of Reading. Other survivors include a brother, Charles Katz, Reading. There are also four granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Memorial services will be Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Lutz Funeral Home Inc., Mount Penn. Burial will be private.

Vernon W. Unger, 75, El Paso, Texas, died Aug. 24 in a hospital in El Paso. He was the husband of Olga Unger. Born in Berks County, he was a son of the late Harry and Anna Unger. Unger served for many years in the Army until his retirement. He is also survived by four sons: Randy, Albuquerque, N.M.; Danny, Palestine, Texas; Larry, Leroy, Texas; and Hubert, in Iraq. Other survivors include three daughters: Brenda (Unger) Black, Fort Worth; Lissa (Unger) Combs, Florence, Texas; and Yvette (Unger) Saenz, El Paso. There are also 25 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services were Aug. 29 in Sunset Funeral Homes, El Paso. Burial was in the Fort Bliss (Texas) National Cemetery.

Vernon W. Unger, 75, El Paso, Texas, who died Aug. 24 in a hospital in El Paso, is also survived by a sister, Marion (Unger) Staley, Muhlenberg Park; and two brothers, Nobel F., Summerfield, Fla., and Marvin S., Waunakee, Wis.

Death from Fright. On the day of the fire in Carpenter Alley last week, a married lady stopping at the house of a relative residing in Franklin street, near the place of the fire, was so much frightened by the alarm as to produce premature child birth, and the death of the lady yesterday.

Tuesday an engine of the P. & R. Company exploded at Bowers Station. The engineer was instantly killed and taken to Meyerstown. Joshua S. Robinson the conductor and A.J. Epp, the brakeman were badly hurt and taken to Reading hospital.

Catherine A. Updegrave, 102, formerly of Reading, died June 15 at 7:35 a.m. in the Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, where she had resided 16 years. Her husband, Jacob D. Updegrave, died Oct. 6, 1950. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Henry R. and Catherine (Fair) Gerhart. Surviving are a daughter, Eleanor C. (Updegrave) Zechman, Elizabethtown; and two sons, Ronald J., East Lyme, Conn., and Frederick L., Reading. Other survivors include a brother, Ralph F. Gerhart, Topton; and a sister, Helen G. (Gerhart) Witman, also a resident at the Masonic Village. There are also seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Bean Funeral Homes Inc., Reading. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery, Tuckerton.

Daniel S. Urffer, 71, a carpenter for the Allentown School district for 27 years, died at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart hospital, where he had been a patient since Sept. 10. Born in Hereford, he was a son of the late Henry and Mary (Schultz) Urffer. He had resided in this city for the past 50 years and was retired on pension from the school district three months ago. A member of Trinity Evangelical church, he was affiliated fraternally with Livingston Castle 250, K.G.E., Allen Temple 42, L.G.E., L.O.O. Moose, Edwin G. Martin lodge 6890, F. and A.M., Allentown Forest 41, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, and the Janitors' Assn. of the Allentown School district. Surviving are his wife, the former Estella Geho, a son Nelson H., Allentown, one grandchild, and a brother Adam, Hereford. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and five brothers.

Mrs. Lillie May (Haydt) Urffer, 84, of 953 Green St., Allentown, died yesterday in Allentown Osteopathic Hospital. She was the widow of Samuel S. Urffer. Born in Hereford Township, Berks County, she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Adelaide (Schlicher) Haydt. She was a member of Dubbs Memorial United Church of Christ of Allentown. She was a former women's auxiliary officer of the Bethany Orphan's Home of Allentown. Surviving are two daughters, Verna, wife of Wilbur Yeager of Allentown and Mrs. Josephine Boyd at home; a son, George L., of Allentown/ a brother, Elwood Haydt of Mertztown R. 1; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Stephens Funeral Home, 1335-37 Linden St., Allentown. Viewing will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Sallie G. Urffer, 87, widow of Adam S. Urffer, 121 Arch St., Fleetwood, died yesterday afternoon at the Styer Convalescent Home at Pennsburg. Born in Hereford, Berks County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth (Griesemer) Kriebel. She was a member of the New Goshenhoppen United Church of Christ, East Greenville, and of its Ladies’ Auxiliary. She is survived by one son, Henry K. Urffer, Baltimore; and two daughters, Mrs. Marian K. Bechtel, Pennsburg, and grace, wife of the Rev. Paul Kehm, Fleetwood, with whom she resided. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, as well as two brothers, Andrew G. Kriebel, Hereford, and Dr. Asher Kriebel, Lynnville. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Mann Funeral Home, 221 Main St., East Greenville. Friends may call Monday evening.

Harry C. Urich, 73, Fleetwood manufacturer and civic leader, died of a stroke Monday night. Urich was president and general manager of the Fleetwood Metal Body works, one of the best known industries of its kind until its acquisition by the Fisher Body company of Detroit. He was born in Kutztown, Lebanon county, and went to Fleetwood where he organized the body works which built custom bodies for automobiles. He was conservator of the Fleetwood National bank during the banking holiday and was a member of county draft board 2. He was a director of the Fleetwood bank and the Reading hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Anna M. Urkuski, 92, formerly of Gerry Street, Reading and the St. Joseph Living Center, who died November 21 in Berkshire Center, Exeter Township, where she had resided since October 25. Her husband, Peter Urkuski, died in 1996. Born in Reading, she was employed by the Standard Paper Box Manufacturing Co., Reading, until her retirement. She was a member of SS. Cyril & Methodius Roman Catholic Church, Reading. Urkuski is survived by a sister. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery, Laureldale. The Gallman-Sonoski Funeral Home Inc., Reading, handled the arrangements.

Services were held in Jacobs United Church of Christ, New Tripoli, for Cylde F. Utt, who died May 5 in his Lynn Township, Lehigh County residence. Burial was in the church cemetery. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret L. (Henry) Utt. Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Harrison and Miriam (Weiss) Utt. He was a self-employed farmer in Lynn Township and was formerly employed as a die sinker for Bethlehem Steel Company. Utt was a former president of the Ontelaunee Republican Club, Appalachian Trail Blazers, Kempton Senior Citizens Association and Kempton Senior Friends Association; former vice president of the Kempton Lions Club; and a former Republican committeeman. He was a member of former councilman of Jacobs UCC Church. Surviving are a son, Jack H. Utt, Kutztown; and eight daughters: Darlene L. (Utt) Young, New Smithville; Deanna R. (Utt) Ehrets, Breinigsville; Bonnie G. (Utt) Snyder and Donna L. (Utt) Snyder, both of New Tripoli; Sharon S. (Utt) Stopp, Kempton; Joyce A. (Utt) Wentz, New Ringgold; Penny L. (Utt) Brensinger, Alburtis; and Patti U. (Utt) Snyder, at home. There are also 27 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include four sisters: Janice (Utt) Heinrich, Allentown; Carmen (Utt) Yurrick, Duluth, Minn.; Mary (Utt) Spess, Bethlehem; and Charlotte (Utt) Spess, Houston, Texas. He was predeceased by a daughter, Pauletta (Utt) Richard, and a son, Ronald C. Utt. The Robert S. Nester Funeral Home, New Tripoli, was in charge of arrangements.
