Mrs. Mary H. Stauffer died on Sunday at 6:20 a.m. at the home of her husband, A. K. Stauffer, Esq., on the Hill Road. Although a great sufferer during her last illness her end was painless and peaceful. She was conscious almost to the last which she patiently waited, receiving the sacrament and bidding her family farewell. Mrs. Stauffer was born in this city on December 4, 1842, on the old Keim homestead which was formerly located on part of the present site of the public building. She was the second child of John High Keim and lived here until 1855, when her parents moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where she studied in a convent and completed her studies at St. Mary's Hall, Burlington, NJ. On September 4, 1866, she was married to Lieut. William Wirt Mills, a member of the Dubuque bar, who died the following year, when she came with her infant son to this city and joined her mother, who had preceded her. She was married to Mr. Stauffer on December 15, 1870. Mrs. Stauffer was a highly estimable lady of many accomplishments, a brilliant conversationalist, a generous patron of the benevolent institutions of the city, devoted to her husband and family, and she leaves a large circle of friends, who sincerely lament her loss.
She was a life member of the Widows Home and Bureau of Employment, and was well known in society circles of Washington, where she was frequently entertained. She was greatly interested in fancy work of every description and she was considered an authority on the subject. She wrote considerably on this topic, having been editor of the "Knitting Circle" in the Home Queen, a paper for ladies, published in Philadelphia. For 5 years her signature, "Mary Keim Stauffer," has appeared monthly attached to valuable articles in one or more of the following papers - The "Ladies Home Journal," of Philadelphia; the "Ladies' World," of New York; the "American Farmers' Home Journal," of New York; the "Young Folks' Home Journal," of New York; the "Home Queen," of Philadelphia; the "Housewife," of New York.
Mrs. Stauffer, on her father's side was descended from Johannas Keim, who was from a family of prominent merchants of Landau, a fortified city of the Palatinate of the Rhine, who emigrated to New York in 1708 and settled in Oley in 1709, receiving a patent from the government of William Penn, which is still on file in Harrisburg. Through the deBennevilles the Keims received French Huguenot blood and through the Mayers the lineage is traced back to Melchoir Mayer, a Staudhauptmann of the free city of Ulm in 1452. By her mother she was descended from the Tuckahoe branch of the Randolf family of Virginia and was a granddaughter of Col. Thomas Beverly Randolf, one of the first graduates of West Point, and was the 10th generation from the Algonquin Princess Pocahontas. Deceased was a member of Christ Cathedral and was always zealous in church work.
Five children survive: Rev. William Wirt Mills, curate of Grace Church, Jersey City; John Keim Stauffer, Anna Keim and Mary Virginia Stauffer, who are now in the Girls' High School, and Frederick Randolph Stauffer. Of 7 brothers and 4 sisters of Mrs. Stauffer, the following survive: DeB. Randolph Keim, the Washington correspondent; Edward T. and Peyton R. Keim, officer of the American Express Company, at Kansas City, MO; T. Beverly Keim, president of the River foundry company, this city; John Otto Keim, superintendent of the Delaware River and Lancaster Railroad, of Philadelphia and Virginia R. wife of James Millholland, general manager of the George's Creek and Cumberland Railroad, Cumberland, MD. Funeral next Thursday.

John Long, and a number of those nearest and dearest to the deceased, joined in this solemn service, in which the church remembers the faithful departed and prays that they and the living may be joint partakers of the heavenly kingdom. The remains lay in a handsome cloth-covered casket, which was almost hidden from view by the floral offering. Mrs. Stauffer was dressed in a rich black dress. In her hand she held some choice roses placed there by her children and also a cross.

At the entrance to the church the funeral procession was met by the vested choir of the cathedral and the clergy, Rev. Dr. Orrick, Rev. John Long and Rev. L. R. Dalrymple. As Rev. Dr. Orrick opened the burial office; the procession of white robed choristers and clergy moved up the centre aisle, followed by the bier and the family and friends.
The choir then sang the burial Psalms-39 and 90-and then was read 1 Corinthians XV. 10 XVI, in which St. Paul speaks at length of the resurrection of the dead.
Then was sung the hymn "Hark! Hark! My Soul! Angel Songs are Swelling," in which the refrain to each verse is" Angels of Jesus; Angels of Light; Singing to Welcome; The pilgrims of the night."
After this Dr. Orrick, Rev. Long and Rev. Dalrymple each paid well-deserved tributes to the memory of the deceased, speaking of her heroic cheerfulness in suffering and of her many truly Christian traits.
As the old hymn of St. Bernard, "Brief Life is Here Our Portion," was sung, the procession moved out of the church and proceeded to Charles Evans Cemetery, where interment was made in the presence of the relatives and intimate friends. C. Henninger & Sons were in charge.
John Otto Keim and family of Philadelphia; James A. Mulholland and family, of Cumberland, MD., and deB. Randolph Keim and family, of Washington, D. C., were among the many present.

Despondent because of sickness in his family and his inability to satisfactorily provide for his wife and brood of three children because of a long period of unemployment, Robert Steffey committed suicide at 7.45 o'clock Wednesday night at his home on Furnace street, Topton, by shooting himself with a shot gun. He was aged 32 years. For several weeks, Steffey is said to have brooded over his misfortunes. These were increased during the recent storm and flood when water surrounded his home and entered the first floor to a depth of two or three feet causing much damage to furniture. This added misfortune is believed to have been the last straw that caused a greater despondency which finally ended in his untimely death. In a note written just before his death, Steffey expressed sorrow over his contemplated deed and called upon his brothers to assist in the care of his children. His wife and children were visiting at the home of a neighbor when the suicide took place. A neighbor heard the shot and with Constable Harvey Kemp entered the home. Going to the second floor they found the door to the front bedroom locked and upon forcing it found Steffey sprawled over the bed, the shot having taken the top of his head off. Dr. C. F. Smith, of Topton, deputy coroner of Berks county, was notified and after viewing the remains issued a certificate of death and gave permission to Undertaker Irwin D. DeLong to remove the body to his morgue. He was a native of Topton, a son of Ellen, nee Schell, and the late Henry Steffey. He is survived by his mother, a widow, Mary, nee Bailey, three children, Rachel, Myrl and Helen and ten brothers and sisters, William, Harvey, Ralph, Clayton, Henry, Marie, Florence, Maude, Daisy and Mrs. David Boyer, all of Topton. Interment will be made in the Topton cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday night from 7 to 9 o'clock.

A CHARITABLE ACT; The Stricken Stimmel Family in Engelsville Receives Kind Assistance. ONE OF THE SONS DIED; The Other Members of the Family Now Expected To Recover. Money, Provisions, Clothing and A Nurse Sent to Their Help Another beautiful illustration of the charitable disposition of the Boyertown people was given in the case of the stricken STIMMEL family at Engelsville last Monday. The distress of this family was briefly told in last week's Democrat. The father, mother and four children were down with typhoid fever, with no one to nurse them. Dr. L. K. FRANCIS, the family physician, first made the facts public. On Sunday morning and evening collections were taken in Pastor FREEMAN's Reformed Church, which amounted to $31. The Lutheran Ladies Aid sent bedding and other articles and the Reformed Missionary Society sent several changes of underwear for each member of the family. A purse was then made up and a nurse was engaged from the Pottstown hospital to nurse the family. Several women also went there and thoroughly cleaned the house, which was in a horrible condition through the neglect and inability of the mother to take care of things. A collection was also taken up in Dunn's Cigar factory for the sick family; and the P. O. S. of A. collected $5 on Monday evening for the family. On Tuesday afternoon, Charles [STIMMEL], who was first taken sick, died. The remains were taken to a vault in Fairview Cemetery, on account of the remaining sick in the house. Had it not been for the prompt assistance of the charitable people of Boyertown, the whole family would evidently have perished from sheer neglect. The burial of the son took place yesterday. The remains were interred in Union Cemetery. There were no funeral services and no one attended the corpse to the grave except the undertaker, and a few others who assisted in the burial. As soon as the family is able to be out again a special funeral service will be held. The other family members are doing well at last report.
