Mrs. Ella M. (Weida) Jackson, 82, died Tuesday morning at her home on Salisbury Avenue, Allentown R. 63. Born in Shamrock, Berks County, she was a daughter of the late James W. and Angeline (Walbert) Weida. She resided in Allentown for the past 25 years and was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Surviving are two sons, Fred L., Macungie, and Howard L., with whom she resided; a sister, Mrs. Anton Andersen, Allentown; a brother, Bright R. Weida, Emmaus; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Jackson, a sister and two brothers.

Annie, the 7 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Oswin Jacobs of Gabelsville, died of diphtheria and croup. Funeral was Wednesday, interment at Mertztown.

Private services were held for Donald H. Jacobs, 77, who died June 13 in his residence on Main Street, Elverson. He was the husband of Marian L. (Beiler) Miller. Born in Geigertown, Jacobs was a self-employed carpenter and was last employed in the maintenance department at Twin Valley High School, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, Morgantown. Jacobs was a life member of the Friendship Fire Company, Morgantown, and American Legion Post 28, Millsboro, Del. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Also surviving are five sons: Donald C., Birdsboro; Roger C. and Scott M., both of Morgantown; Melvin H., Narvon, Lancaster County; and Barry L., Robesonia. Other survivors include three daughters: Linda J. (Jacobs) Bergmeister, Coatesville; Debra G. (Jacobs) Stauffer, Morgantown; and Karen L. (Jacobs) Scalese, Sinking Spring. Also surviving is a stepson, Kent S. Miller, Jacksonville, Fla. Also a brother; nine grandchildren; three stepgranddaughters and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a stepdaughter. The Eckenroth Home for Funerals, Terre Hill, Lancaster County, was in charge of the arrangements.

Emaline, widow of William Jacobs, died yesterday morning at the residence of her granddaughter, Mrs. Harvey Dotterer, near Guth's Station, of a complication of diseases, aged 71 years. She was a daughter of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Reiter, and was born in Hereford township, Berks county. Her husband preceded her in death seventeen years ago. She has since lived with the daughter and granddaughter. There survive one daughter, Mrs. Jacob Fenstermacher, of Guth's Station, one brother, Jacob Reiter, of Nebraska; one sister, Mrs. Eliza Nice, of Boyertown. Rev. H. Semmel will conduct the funeral services.

Horace S. Jacobs, formerly of 121 S. Home St., Topton, died yesterday at the home of his nephew, Francis Jacob, 37 Maple St., Macungie. He was 84. Born in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County, he was the son of the late Henry B. and Emma D. (Schwenk) Jacobs. He was a butcher and operated a butcher shop in Topton for several years. He was a member of Christ's DeLong Untied Church of Christ in Bowers. He served several terms as church consistoryman. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Earl A. Trexler Funeral Home, 25 E. Weiss St., Topton. Viewing will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Lizzie Jacobs, 62, of Topton, died at 6:20 p.m. Thursday in Allentown hospital after an illness of five weeks. She was admitted to the institution two weeks ago. Born in Topton, May 16, 1879, she was the daughter of the late Mrs. Sarah Keller. On March 5, 1914, she was married to Horace Jacobs. Her husband is the only survivor. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. from her late home, with further services in Bowers church. Interment will be in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Mary A., widow of Bentley Jacobs, died Monday, April 1, at the home of her son-in-law, John H. Hoffman, at Reading, aged 57 years, 9 months and 25 days. Deceased was a daughter of the late David Bortz, of Grimville. She leaves an adopted daughter, Mary A., wife of John H. Hoffman; these brothers and sisters, David U. Bortz, of Shillington; Henry Bortz and Sarah, wife of L. F. Guinther, of Reading; Amanda, wife of Daniel Levan, of Blandon; and these stepsisters and step-brother: Ellen, wife of Joseph Bechtel, of Lebanon; Floranda, wife of Frank Hess, of Hamburg; Emma, wife of David Heffner, of Lyons, and Isaac Knittle, of Kutztown.

The funeral of Mary Jane, the daughter of Oswin JACOBS of Gabelsville postponed from Tuesday, on account of the blizzard, was held yesterday. Her age was 4 years 10 months and 3 days, and she was the second child of the family who died of diphtheria within a month. Services were held at the house, Rev. A.M. WEBER officiated. Undertaker H.M. HOUCK took the remains to Longswamp for interment.

Oswin D. Jacobs of 1414 Lehigh St., city, a devout and active member of St. Stephen's Lutheran church, died at 7:55 last night at the Sacred Heart hospital in his 54th year. He had been ailing nine weeks, and spent three weeks in the Graduate hospital, Philadelphia, before being transferred to the local hospital. Mr. Jacobs was born in Hereford township, Berks county, a son of Oswin A. and Mary, nee Weidner, Jacobs. He came to Allentown from Philadelphia 28 years ago and for a time conducted an electrical and refrigerator business. For the last eight years, he was a refrigeration serviceman for H. N. Crowder Jr. Co. At St. Stephen's Lutheran church he taught a Sunday school class, was financial secretary for many years and served for a number of years on the church council. He was also a member of the Men's Bible class. Surviving are his parents who resided at Boyertown, his wife, Katie F., two sons and a daughter, Dorene A., at home, Freeman O., of Allentown, and Emerson D., Baltimore; one granddaughter, Janice Jacobs, city, a brother, John Jacobs of Pottstown, and the following sisters: Mrs. Francis Weidner, Mrs. Edwin Hagen, Mrs. John Beech, all of Reading; Mrs. Charles Herring of Pottstown, Mrs. Harvey Thomas of Morysville, Mrs. Paul Heinert and Mrs. Helen Greitz, Boyertown. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. Stephen's church, Franklin and Turner Sts. Burial will be made in Grandview cemetery.

Services were held for William C. Jacobs, 57, husband of Mary L. (Bauer) Jacobs, of Russell Avenue, Douglassville, who died June 18 in his home. Born in Doylestown, he was a son of Ada V. (Yocum) Rohs and the late William K. Jacobs. Jacobs was a 1964 graduate of Central Bucks High School. He was a fire police lieutenant for Amity Fire Co., where he designed the Web site and also for the Oley Fair. Surviving in addition to his mother and wife of 35 years is a brother. Contributions may be made to the fire company. Burial was in Most Blessed Sacrament Church Cemetery in Bally. The arrangements were handled by the Linwood W. Ott Funeral Home, Boyertown.

Donald H. Jacoby, 98, Chambersburg, Franklin County, died Aug. 12 in Menno Haven Nursing Home, Chambersburg. His wife, Cynthia (White) Jacoby, died in January 2004. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Henry and Adelaide (Sheehan) Jacoby. Jacoby had been employed by Household Finance, Chicago, where he retired as a vice president. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fayetteville, Franklin County. Jacoby is survived by a sister, Anna (Jacoby) Gehrke, Reading. There are also two grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Donald H. Jr. The Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home Ltd., Chambersburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Lovinia, wife of James Jacoby, Sr., was discovered dead in bed Tuesday afternoon at the family residence in Seidersville. The deceased had been ailing for a brief time and feeling bad retired to bed Tuesday afternoon, where she was discovered by her husband. The deceased was 73 years, 4 months and 12 days of age and was born in Hereford township, Bucks (sic) county, on April 16, 1827, and was a daughter of the late Jacob and Barbara Moll. The deceased is survived by the following children: Mrs. Morris Berger, South Bethlehem; Mrs. Monroe Reinbold, Limeport; James Jacoby, Philadelphia; Jonas Jacoby, South Bethlehem; Sylvester Jacoby, Seidersville; also these two sisters, Mrs. Benjamin Bortz, Macungie, and Mrs. Harry Kistler, West Bethlehem. The funeral, private at the house, will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock and will proceed to Friedensville Church, where services will be held. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining.

Jahnig, Mrs. Anna L., passed to her heavenly home in the early morning hours of January 22, 1950. She perished in a tragic fire which consumed her home. She was born at Mohn's Hill, Pa., 78 years ago, and throughout her life, she has been associated with the Evangelical Congregational Church. She is survived by two sons, one of Reading and the other of New Cumberland. The funeral was under the direction of her Pastor. Burial took place at the Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading. Sister Jahnig lived a beautiful Christian life. It is her experience now to enjoy the glory of eternity. __G. R. Booth

Sister M. Frances Jakubco, 83, Missionary Sister of the Sacred Heart, of St. Michael Convent, Hyde Park, Berks County, died Thursday afternoon at St. Joseph Medical Center, Reading. Born in Lansford, she was a daugther of the late Joseph and Mary Kamenicky Jakubco. Sister Frances entered the convent on Jan. 21, 1936, and took her first professsion on Aug. 26, 1937. During her 63 years as a nun, she taught at elementary schools in the Allentown and Atlanta dioceses. After retiring from teaching, she continued as a school librarian and religion teacher. Surviving are three brothers, the Rev. Bernard Jakubco, Watertown, N.Y., Joseph, Tuscarora, and Edward, Flemington, N.J.; three sisters, Sister Rosella, MSC, Lansford, Frances Cebulak, Union, N.J., and Rose Barletta, Tamaqua. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Motherhouse Chapel of St. Michael Convent, Hyde Park, Reading. Interment will be in the convent cemetery. Killed By Lightning. Plow Tavern Struck by a Bolt and Many Persons Affected.
During the storm of Sunday night lightning struck the Plow tavern, between Morgantown and Beckersville, and killed Webster ZIEGLER, aged 15, and George JAMES, aged 45, and married. John HOYER, a school teacher of Brecknock; Harrison ZIEGLER, a carpenter; Owen ZIEGLER, by whom he was employed; John ESCHELMAN, aged 10 years, a son of the proprietor of the tavern, and Jonas HARTZ, residing with M. H. ESCHELMAN, merchant, in the same building, were stunned. During the height of the storm George JAMES, who, with his wife and several children, had been visiting John BINGAMAN, a truck farmer, who lives a mile and a half away, and were on the way to their home at Goosetown, drove up to the tavern to remain until after the storm. Mr. JAMES took his wife and children to the side sitting room, and then came out and engaged in conversation with the others, most of whom were sitting outside on the porch watching the storm.
When the lightning struck the building it entered the roof, down though the second story to the bar-room, and out though the open door to the porch. Mr. JAMES was instantly killed. Webster ZIEGLER, who was sitting in a large armchair close to the window, was found, his shoes torn from his feet and his legs scorched. The others mentioned were struck to the floor and unconscious. The women and children in the sitting room and Banks ESCHELMAN, who was in the bar-room, were uninjured. It was fully two hours before those who were stunned revived.
Webster ZIEGLER was a son of Harrison ZIEGLER, residing near the Plow tavern and a well-known farmer. George JAMES was an estimable citizen of Caernarvon. He was a son of Hunter JAMES, who once lived in Reading and died several years ago, and was a nephew of Evan JAMES, the blacksmith. Two brothers, residing in the South and one sister in Schuylkill county, are the only survivors of his father's family. Deceased was an exemplary young man, noted for his honesty, industry and sobriety, and was a very worthy citizen. He owned his own property, a very comfortable home of several acres, was a successful tobacco farmer and carried on lime burning at Kurtz's kilns at Willow Glen. His heart broken wife, with two small children, sadly mourn his demise.

Jacob M. James died at Comley, Montour county, while on a visit to his son Howard, at that place, aged 69 years. Deceased was a former resident of this city, but lately had been at the soldiers' home in Dayton, O. He was a member of the Penn'a cavalry during the war and leaves the following children: Howard, Daniel, Samuel, Ellwood, Mrs. Phillip Presser, Mrs. Charles Fisher, Mrs. Rebecca Kuhn, and Mrs. Kate Stowman.

Mrs. Lizzie L. (Angstadt) James of 335 W. Walnut St., Kutztown, widow of David W. James, died yesterday in Allentown Hospital. She was 90. Born in Berks County, she was a daughter of the late James H. and Mary (Herring) Angstadt. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Margo Long of Kutztown; a son, Henri A. James of Kutztown; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Schaeffer Funeral Home, 346 Main St., Kutztown.

Mrs Rebecca James died very suddenly at the residence of her husband Jacob N James, 329 North 10th St, Sunday evening. Deceased had been in feeble health for sometime, but no immediate danger was apprehended . She was seated in an arm chair in the midst of her family about 10 o'clock, when she suddenly became very faint and was assisted to her room. Her husband hastily summoned medical assistance but when he returned accompanied by Drs. Becker and Hinnershitz, Mrs. James had just died of apoplexy. Deceased was born and raised in this city and her maiden name was Graeff. Mrs. James was well known and highly respected. She was a member of St. Stephen's Reformed Church, and her age was 59years, 2 months and 28 days. Deceased is the mother of 9 surviving children, Mrs. Kate Stowman and Elwood of Philadelphia; Howard of Montour Co., Mrs. Emma Presser, Mrs. Clara Fisher, Mrs. Rebecca Kuhns, Daniel J, Samuel and William James of this city. Deceased was a sister of Mrs Emma Reinhold of Fleetwood, and Peter and Henry Graeff of Reading.

Mrs. Mary Jameson, widow of James Jameson, dec'd, who when a young man was a resident of Allentown, engaged in the clothing business in a small frame building on the site now occupied by Frankenfield & Co's. confectionery store, No. 641 Hamilton street, a few doors below the Hotel Allen, died in Reading on Wednesday last, in the 81st year of her age. The deceased was a daughter of the long deceased Henry Worman, of this city, and is survived by two brothers — Abraham, of Seiple's Station, South Whitehall tsp., and John, of Emaus. Her husband, who amassed large wealth in the clothing business in Reading, died several years ago. The deceased is survived by two daughters — Mrs. Jacob Knabb and Mrs. Wm. H. Livengood, both of Reading, and four grandchildren. James P. Sellers, of the firm of Sellers, Bachman & Medlar, successors to James Jameson, is a nephew of deceased.

Elizabeth Janiszewski, 90, formerly of 3413 Sheidy Ave., Muhlenberg Township, Berks County, died Friday afternoon at Spruce Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, West Reading, where she lived since December 1997. Born in Shenandoah, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Reichert Bartholomew. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Laureldale. Her husband, Adam E., died in March 1983. Surviving are two daughters, Jacqueline E. Eagle and Bertha M. Zuy, both of Reading; a sister, Helene Fisher, Lebanon; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from Auman Funeral Home Inc., Reading. Interment will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton.

Bertha Elizabeth (Oswald), wife of William G. Jarrett, died yesterday at her home in Longsdale, Mertztown R.D., aged 50 years. She was a native of Longswamp township, daughter of the late Alvin and Telina (Eck) Oswald, and a member of the Lutheran congregation of Longswamp church. Surviving are her husband; these children: Russell, Helen, Florence and William Jarrett, Jr., at home; Mrs. Martin Fetterman, Kingston; Max Jarrett, Maxatawny; Luther, Betty and Arlene Jarrett, Allentown; four grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Morris Fegley, Alpha, N.J. Private services Sunday at 1.30 p.m. at the home. Public services following in Longswamp church, the Rev. W. F. Bond officiating. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Elda M. Jarrett, 51, of Mertztown, a sewing machine operator at the Royal Manufacturing Co., Alburtis, died last night in Reading Hospital. She was the wife of Russell W. Jarrett. Born in Maxatawny Township, she was a daughter of the late Charles F. and Mary Ann (Adams) Bailey. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Mertztown. Surviving, besides her husband, are a son, David R., of Mertztown R. 1; two sisters, Beulah, wife of Paul Lantz, of Topton; and Mary, wife of Jack Schaeffer, of Fleetwood; two brothers, Edgar, of Fleetwood R. 3; and William, of East Texas, and two grandchildren. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Earl A. Trexler Funeral Home, 25 E. Weiss St., Topton. The viewing will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Last Friday the few earthly remains of Lydia, daughter of John and Mary Jarrett, long ago deceased, and first wife of David S. Levan, of Kutztown, were dug up from Solomon's church cemetery, of town, and taken to Kutztown, for reburial. She was buried 36 years ago. The coffin had been covered with an arch of brick which was cemented and very tight. When this was opened but a few decayed pieces of the coffin remained, among them the skull of the deceased, which was about all that was left after the ravages of time and nature in the work of reducing "dust to dust." Mr. Levan is quite old. He was badly injured last fall when the mustangs ran away at the Kutztown fair. The desire to have the few remains nearer to his present home inducted him to have them brought there.

Russell W. Jarrett, 67, a packer in the shipping department of the Caloric Corp. before retiring in 1974, died Monday in his Mertztown home. His wife, Elda M. (Bailey) Jarrett, died in 1968. Born in Longswamp Township, a son of the late William G. and Bertha E. (Oswald) Jarrett, he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Mertztown. Surviving are a son, David R., of Mertztown R. 1; a brother, William G., of Mertztown; five sisters, Maude, wife of Martin Fetterman, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; Betty, wife of Clarence Fries, and Mrs. Arlene Koch, both of Allentown; Helen of Kutztown; and Mrs. Florence Bowman, of Madison Heights, Mich.; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Trexler & Hook Funeral Home, 25 E. Weiss St., Topton. Calling hours will be 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

William G. Jarrett, Mertztown R. 1, died yesterday at the home of his son, Russell Jarrett in Mertztown, aged 60 years. He was a native of Shimerville, a son of the late Mrs. Irvin Miller. Surviving are the following children: Russell, at whose home he died; Helen, at home; Maude, wife of Martin Fetterman, Lancaster; Betty, wife of Clarence Fries and Arlene, wife of Paul Koch, Allentown; Lieutenant Florence Jarrett, Camp Polk, La.; Max, Mertztown; Private William Jarrett, Jr., in the South Seas, and Luther Jarrett, Allentown. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and the following step-sisters and step-brothers: Mrs. Richard Romig, Macungie; Lizzie Miller, Allentown; Mrs. Edwin Glaw, Luther, Richard, Adam and Roland Miller, Macungie; Lloyd Miller, Emmaus R.D. and Earl Miller, Alburtis. He was a member of the Lutheran wing of the Longswamp church. Private funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the home of his son, Russell Jarrett with continued services at 2 p.m. in the Longswamp church and interment in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. William F. Bond will officiate.

Private services were held for Madeline J. Jarvis, 68, who died February 3 in her residence on Woodland Avenue, Stony Creek Mills. Her husband, James S. Jarvis died in 1992. Born in Reading, she was employed for 20 years as a clerk by Hollywood Cleaners, West Reading, retiring in August. Surviving are two daughters, Deborah A. (Jarvis) Galt and Dara L. Jarvis, both of Reading; and a son, James S. Jr., Stony Creek Mills. Other survivors include two sisters; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The John P. Feeney Funeral Home Inc., Reading, was in charge of the private arrangements.

Anna Jasinkski, 81, of Quakertown, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at Genesis Eldercare Quakertown Center. Funeral services were held Jan. 22. She was the wife of Edward Jasinkski for 51 years. She was born in the Ukraine. She was a member of the Perkasie Church of the Nazarene. In addition to her husband, she is survived by: two sons, Stephen E. Death of Mary J. Jenkins. The death of Mary J., widow of John Jenkins, occurred rather suddenly at her home in St. Clair on Thursday, Deceased was in her 88th year and was one of the oldest members of the Welsh colony.

Private services were held for Edward Jeschke, 84, who died June 23 in his residence on Fairview Street. He was the husband of Betty (Shaffer) Jeschke. Born in Reading, Jeschke was employed as a machine operator by NGK Metals Inc., Tuckerton, retiring in 1982. He was a graduate of Birdsboro High School. Jeschke was an Army veteran of World War II. He is also survived by two sons, Lawrence E., Exeter Township, and Brian E., Reading; and a daughter, Elizabeth (Jeschke) Kavanagh, in Australia. Other survivors include two sisters; two brothers; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter in 1956. The arrangements were handled by the Henninger Funeral Home Inc., Reading.

The funeral of Mrs. Anna, widow of the late David Johnson, formerly of this city, was held on Wednesday morning. Interment was made in the Bower's Union cemetery. She was a daughter of Andrew and Catharine Reinert, and was born in Longswamp. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran church at Bowers. On Sept. 14, 1861, she was united in marriage to David Johnson, who served in the Civil War and preceded her in death many years ago. Of six children, the following survive: Samuel, of Reading; James, of Northampton; Mrs. John Neff, of Bethlehem, and Mrs. Albert Furler, of North Wales. There also survive a brother, Samuel Reinert, of Shamrock, and 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Since the demise of her husband, she lived with her daughters at Bethlehem and North Wales.

Funeral services were held for Anna E. Johnson, 86, of the Evans Retirement Center in Fleetwood, formerly of Bellevue Avenue in Laureldale and the St. Joseph Assisted Living Center in Hyde Park, who died November 1 in St. Joseph Medical Center, Reading. Born in Sassamansville, she worked as a seamstress in the Reading area, retiring in 1984. She was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ in Reading. Surviving are a daughter, Bonita Szajek of Reading; two sisters, Betty Arlene Gehris of Bechtelsville and Kathryn J. Drumheller of Blandon; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother. Burial was in Schwarzwald Cemetery in Jacksonwald. The Lutz Funeral Home, Perkiomen Ave., Reading, handled the arrangements.

Surviving are a daughter, Bonita (Johnson) Szajek, Reading. Other survivors include a granddaughter, and two sisters, Betty A. (Johnson) Gehris, Bechtelsville, and Kathryn J. (Johnson) Drumheller, Blandon.

Mrs. Catharine, wife of John F. Johnson, died Saturday afternoon at 12.30 o'clock at her home, No. 1116 Emmett street, after an illness of about two years with a complication of diseases. Her age was 55 years. She was a daughter of the late Daniel Bear, of Longswamp township. Her mother is still living at Mertztown, aged 95 years. She resided in this city almost all of her married life. Her husband, two sons and three daughters survive: Edwin, of this city, and William, of Macungie; Mrs. Frank Buchman, of this city; Jennie, at home, and Mrs. Hartley H. Seaton, of Paterson, N.J. Two sisters, Mrs. Samuel Epler, of Mertztown, and Mrs. James Kemmerer, of Emaus, also survive. There are seven grandchildren. She was a member of Trinity Reformed Church and the home department of the Sunday school. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 1.30 p.m. with services in the church and interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Rev. Newkirk, the pastor, will be assisted by Rev. Scott Wagner, the former pastor, now of Riegelsville.

Born in Yonkers, N.Y., he was a son of Clifford A. Johnson, Southampton, N.Y., and Margaret P. (Gadonniex) Stewart, Maxatawny Township. He was employed as a forklift operator by Orefield Cold Storage Co.,, Lehigh County. Also surviving are three sisters, Regina M. (Johnson) Holbrook, Jefferson Township; Marie R. Johnson, Maxatawny Township; and Lisa A. (Johnson) Bossler, Richmond Township. There is also his stepfather, Robert H. Stewart, Maxatawny Township. The Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Fern Johnson, 87, died Aug. 28 at 7:45 a.m. in her Spring Township residence. Her husband, Robert W. Johnson, died Nov. 1, 1999. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late John and Amanda I. (Weand) Reigner. Johnson was a member of West Wyomissing Chapel and St. John's Lutheran Church, Sinking Spring. She is survived by a daughter, Janice J. (Johnson) Kurtz, Millerstown, Perry County, and a son, Robert T., Shillington. There are also two grandchildren. Services will be Thursday at noon in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton.

John F. Johnson died early on Saturday morning at the resident of his son, Ed. Johnson, No. 1353 Liberty street, from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy that he suffered last Sunday. Mr. Johnson was born at Kutztown, April 4, 1850, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Johnson. His mother's name was Marion Frey. He was aged 66 years. His trade was that of fireman and engineer. His wife died ten years ago. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Frank Buchman and Ed. Johnson, Allentown; Mrs. H. H. Seaton, Paterson, N.J.; William Johnson, Passaic, N.J., and Mrs. Jennie Ritter, Alaska. Five grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.

Mrs. Lola L. Johnson, a past president of Perkiomen Valley Woman's club, died Sunday night in Temple university hospital, Philadelphia, where she was a patient for five weeks. She was 42 and lived at Hereford. Born in Bechtelsville, a daughter of Mary (Clemmer) Latshaw and the late David H. Latshaw, Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Hereford Mennonite church in Bally, the Ladies Aid society, a teacher in the Sunday school and soloist in the choir. She is survived by her husband, Rolland G. Johnson, her mother in Bechtelsville and a son Waldo at home.

Services were held for Miriam W. (Keim) Johnson, 93, wife of Ralph H. D. Johnson, of West Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, who died December 13 in Manatawny Manor in East Coventry, where she had been a patient. Born in Colebrookdale, Johnson worked at the former Boyertown Casket Co. as a wood carver. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boyertown. Surviving in addition to her husband of 65 years are several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Contributions may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 45 N. Reading Ave., Boyertown, PA 19512. Burial was in Forest Hills Memorial Park in Exeter. The arrangements were handled by the Morrell Funeral Home, Boyertown.

Robert Johnson, 66, a resident of Longswamp township near Mertztown, died Tuesday night at his home, after a protracted illness. The last of his family, he had no survivors. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Shofer funeral home, Topton, at which Rev. Donald Englert will officiate. Interment will be made in Longswamp cemetery.

William F. Johnson, husband of the late Annie Schlegel Johnson, died yesterday at his residence in the High Point Trailer Court, Wescosville R. 1. He was 77. Born in Topton, he was a son of the late James and Lovina Latshaw Johnson. Johnson was a self-employed carpenter. He retired 11 years ago. Surviving are two sons, Earl G., of Philadelphia, and Raymond J., of Allentown; three daughters, Florence A., wife of Erwin P. Pope, and Pauline M., wife of Robert Kauffman, both of Alburtis R. 1, and Elda M. I., wife of Morris D. Carl of Trexlertown; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Schmoyer Funeral Home, Breinigsville, with viewing 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.

Elvina Jones, an aged and respected resident of Trexlertown, died at her home on Sunday night at 11.30 o'clock of a complication of diseases in her 88th year. She was bedfast for twelve weeks. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Eliza A. Oepter and Mrs. Mary Carl, both of Reading. Funeral services at her home in Trexlertown on Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. D. C. Kaufman officiating. Interment in Longswamp cemetery.

Emerson W. Jones Sr., 59, of Mertztown R. 1, died yesterday in Allentown Hospital. Jones, a veteran of World War II, was a welding foreman at Mack Trucks, Inc. He was born in West Nanticoke, the son of the late William and Mary (Curtley) Jones. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor W. (Walker) Jones. Services will be at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Earl A. She was predeceased by her husband, Augustus F. Jones. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late William and Anna (Sendgraf) Flamm. Surviving is a son, Donald F., West Lawn. Other survivors include three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be private. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery, Tuckerton. Jones, 63, of Mohrsville Road, Perry Township, who died of natural causes June 8 in St. Joseph Medical Center, where she had been a patient since May 23. Burial was in Eplers Cemetery, Bern Township. She was the wife of Albert J. Jones. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Edna (Sensenig) Roth. Until retiring in 2002, she was employed as a lens polisher by Pennsylvania Optical Co. for 30 years. She was a member of Eplers United Church of Christ, Bern Township. Also surviving are a daughter, Mistee M. (Ross) Atkins, Shartlesville; a son, Scott R. Cullen, Perry Township; and a stepson, Gregory A. Jones, Reading. There are also four grandchildren. Other survivors include a sister, Joan (Roth) Lenhart, and a brother, Glenn Roth, both of Bern Township.

Luther B. Jones, formerly of Reading, but a resident of Albany for the last 3 years, died at his home near Eckville, Kempton Route No. 2, on Saturday of complications, aged 72. There survive one brother and one sister, both of Pottsville. The deceased was a carpenter by trade, but lived retired. The funeral will be held from the funeral parlors of Undertaker Samuel Nestor, Steinsville, at 10 a.m. today. All services at the house. Interment will be made in New Bethel cemetery. Rev. Ira Klick will officiate. Funeral Director Samuel Nestor, of Steinsville, has charge.

Rebecca, widow of John Jones, died of general debility, aged 91 years, at 3.15 a.m. yesterday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Henry R. Carl, in Reading. She was confined to her room three years. Mr. Jones died twenty years ago. Mrs. Jones was a member of the Longswamp Reformed Church and a resident of Reading for many years. Her daughter, Mrs. Carl, survives. She was the last of her family.

Mrs. Verna M. Sarig Jones, wife of Russell E. Jones, Free Hall, Mertztown R. 1, died yesterday afternoon in Allentown Hospital. She was 53. She was born in Maxatawny Township, a daughter of the late Wilson and Annie Heiter Sarig. She was employed as a cafeteria worker at Brandywine Heights Joint High School. Mrs. Jones was a member of the United Church of Christ congregation of Maxatawny Zion's Church. Also surviving are a son, Harold, Maxatawny; three daughters, Annabelle, wife of Wilbur Gery, Topton; Mildred, wife of William Heydt, Fleetwood R. 1, and Florence, wife of Lee Moll, Mertztown R. 1; a sister, Mrs. Herbert Mest, Mertztown R. 1, and four grandchildren. Services will be at the convenience of the family in the DeLong and Trexler Funeral Home, Topton, with viewing 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday.

George D. Jordan, 61 of Sefranka road, Temple, died this morning in the Reading Hospital. Born in Rappahannock County, Va., and a stone crusher operator 20 years for Berks Products Corp., he was a member of First Baptist Church, Temple. He is survived by his widow, Molly P. (Thomas) Jordan; a daughter, Evelyn, and a sister, Mrs. Ella Robertson, both of Harrisburg. F.F. Seidel, Inc., is in charge of the arrangements.

Pottsville Girl Meets Death in Hamburg Pool. Dives into Deep Water at Blue Mountain Club--Entangled in Roots of Old Tree Stumps, Body Is Recovered Five Hours Later.
Hamburg. Aug 9 (Special). -- Margaret Joy, 20 year old Pottsville girl, met a tragic death in the dam at the Blue Mountain Fish and Game Association at 5:15 Saturday afternoon, less than five minutes after she donned a bathing suit an ddove into the water. In company with a friend, she had gone to the dam for a swim before joinging in the festivities of the evening. Her companion dove into the water. She followed and disappeared. Searchers dragged the water until 10 o'clock when the body was recovered. Members of the Union Fire Company pumped water out the dam and the sluice gates were thrown open intheir effort to locate the young woman's body.
Miss Joy came here this afternoon with a party of Pottsville people for an outing of the association. After enjoying games this afternoon they had dinner at the club house. This evening there was to be a dance. After dinner Miss Joy and Miss Alma Black decided to go in bathing. Miss Joy was an excellent swimmer as is Miss Black. They went to the south side, where there is a good place for diving.
Water 15 Feet Deep
From the shore into the dam there is a beach which slopes down gradually. About 25 feet from the bank the water is 15 feet deep. Miss Black dove into the water and after swiming a short distance looked around. Her friend was not in sight and she called her by ame. She became alarmed when there was no answer and notified others in the party.
John Ott, the steward; Dr. Wood and Mr. Townsend, the latter two being Philadelphia guests of the association, got into the boat which is kept at the dam and rowed to the spot where the girls had entered the water. Without removing their clothing they dove into the water, but after repeated attempts were forced to quit.
The dam is fed by mountain streams and the water is cold. The bottom is littered with stumps of old trees and it is the belief of officials of the association that Miss Joy dove deep, became entangled in the roots of one of these stumps and was unable to extricate herself.
Firemen Assist
A group of people assembled along the bank to witness the efforts to recover the body. When all else failed, the club officials took drastic action. A visit was made to the trustees of Union Fire Company No. 1, this borough, and after a short conference with Fire Chief I.S. Schlenker, permission was secured to use the 700 gallon pumper of the company. The apparatus was rushed to the scene and put to work immediately.
The sluice gates at the lower end of the dam were also opened. In the meantime a request was sent to the Hahn Motor Truck Company which responded with two 500-gallong pumpers. It was estimate that 2400 gallons of water were pumped out of the dam every minute.
The Hamburg Gas and Electric Company brought over a large searchlight, which was installed beside the dam. A flood of light waws played on the water to aide the workers and to reveal the body of the girl as quickly as it would come in sight. The dam is 200 feet wide and 500 yards long, and while the water receded steadily the workers had a most arduous task before them.
Brothers search for Body
In the meantime, the family of the unfortunate young woman was notified. Two brothers, Harry and Enos Joy and two sisters, Mrs. William Evans and Mrs. Carrie Pauley, arrived at the club house in an hour's time. The grief stricken sisters wandered along the bank of the dam while the brothers joined the searching party in boats.

Services will be Friday for Edith (Shimp) Jung, 83, of Berks Heim, Bern Township, and formerly of Boyertown, who died January 27 at the Berks Heim. She was the widow of Heinz Jung. Born in Lancaster, she was a homemaker. Jung was a member of the Gilbertsville Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Surviving is a brother. She was preceded in death by a son and a brother. Calling hours will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Christ and Catagnus Funeral Home, 423 Main St., Oley. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., with Terry J. Meck officiating. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery.

George Junkin, who for 50 years was one of the leading members of the Philadelphia bar, died at his home, in Philadelphia, aged 76 years. Mr. Junkin had been ailing for about two months and was confined to his bed two weeks prior to his demise. Mr. Junkin was born in Milton, Pa., and was a son of the Rev. George Junkin. He was an active layman of the Presbyterian church, attending many General Assemblies as commissioner.
