Injuries Prove Fatal. John K. Hiester Dies in Hospital as Result of Accident which Takes Two Lives.
Injuries received at work two weeks ago proved fatal to John K. Hiester, 314 South Thirteenth street, who passed away at 4 o'clock this morning in the Homeopathic Hospital. His age was 74 years and 11 months.
In the death of Mr. Hiester, two lives have been claimed in an accident which occurred Tuesday, October 3, at the Reading paper mills. Charles Folk, who was injured with Mr. Hiester in the same accident passed away late Saturday evening in the same institution.
According to a report, Messrs. Hiester and Folk, the latter 34 years old, were in an elevator at the plant when the cable broke. The cage with the two men, dropped to the cement covered base of the shaft. Fellow employees extricated them and had them sent to the hospital. Mr. Folk was injured internally. Mr. Hiester suffered from a fracture of both legs and possibly internal injuries. Coroner Rorke is making an investigation of the affair.
Mr. Hiester was born in Bern township and came to Reading 30 years ago. He was a son of the late Jacob and Susan (nee Kramer) Hiester. Deceased was a member of the Reformed congregation of Bern Church. He was employed at the paper mill about 10 years. Surviving are his widow Hattie (nee Deisher) Hiester, and two children, S. Thy days appear to be,

That lovely form from me.

Called hence by early doom,
Just came to show how sweet a flower
In Paradise could bloom.

A Fleetwood store owner strangled his wife and then killed himself, Fleetwood police said last night. The bodies of Melvin J. Hilbert, 45, and Esther V. (Strauss) Hilbert, 51, were found yesterday afternoon by Police Chief Earl R. Fox after neighbors notified him the Hilberts did not answer the door. Fox told The Morning Call Mrs. Hilbert was found lying in bed, dressed only in a slip, with a brown belt around her neck. Hilbert's body was found in another bed with a gunshot wound between his eyes. Fox said Hilbert shot himself with a 12-gauge pumpkin ball — used for hunting big game. Fox said he was told by Hilbert's relatives the couple had been having marital problems. They were married 16 years. They operated a general store at 109 S. Richmond St. Their apartment was above the store. Autopsies have been scheduled for this morning in St. Joseph's Hospital in Reading to determine the exact cause and time of the deaths. Fox said he found a last will and testament written by Hilbert on both sides of a plain sheet of paper. He said the will gave no indication of why the murder and suicide took place. Mrs. Hilbert's father, Reuben Strauss of Fleetwood R. 3, told Fox he talked to Hilbert about 7:45 p.m. Thursday. This is the last time the Hilberts were known to be alive. After receiving a call from neighbors at 12:29 p.m. yesterday, Fox said he went to the Hilbert home. When nobody answered the door, he said he got a ladder and climbed to the second-floor bedroom window where he could see Hilbert's body lying in a pool of blood on the bed. He said he then called an ambulance and notified state police in Reading before entering the home. Assisting Fox in the investigation were Sgts. Robert shuck and Harley Smith and Trooper James Rucco of the state police. Fox said they found Hilbert fully clothed on the bed with a shotgun beside him. Mrs. Hilbert was found on a bed in another bedroom with a belt around her neck. Fox said she also had been bleeding around her eyes and the side of her head. He said it appeared she had been beaten. Hilbert was also employed in the frame department of Parish Pressed Steel, a division of the Dana Corp., in Reading. Born in Fleetwood, he was a son of the late Paul J. and Kate (Heist) Hilbert. He serv ed in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific during World War II. Surviving are two brothers, Kermit P., of Temple R. 1, and Lester E., of Fleetwood, and three sisters, Grace M., wife of Stanley U. Guistwite of Fleetwood R. 2, Bette C., wife of George D. Bieber, and Shirley A., wife of Lee B. Kline, both of Fleetwood. Services will be at the convenience of the family in the Earl a. Trexler Funeral Home in Topton. There will be no viewing. It is seldom that we are called upon to record an instance where death has left a more sad and solemn impress than in the demise of Mr. and Mrs. John Hilbert, an aged couple residing near Rothrocksville. The husband had long been suffering from general debility, and was called out of life on Sunday week, at the age of 65. His wife, Elizabeth, aged 60, was fairly well preserved, and being in good health she had nursed and waited upon her helpmeet during his protracted period of prostration, but when finally his death occurred, she was overcome with heart disease and died the next afternoon, Monday, 24th. They had been wedded many years and walked side by side as husband and wife in a faithful discharge of the duties of life, and together went to the cemetery in one coffin, the children having decided to bury them in a double casket in one grave.... The casket was the largest ever made in this city, the length of it being 5 feet and 9 inches, its width a yard, less 3 inches, and its depth 19 inches. The funeral took place on Thursday last, interment and services at the Longswamp church.

Shortly before 7 o'clock on Monday morning while a number of the employees of the Trexler Cooperage Company, at Mertztown, on the East Penn railroad, were standing in front of the boiler warming themselves, the boiler exploded, and killed three men instantly, injuring another so that he died in a short time, and severely wounding several others. The dead are Charles W. Oswald, aged 38 years, and leaving a wife and children; Sassaman Hilbert, aged 26 years, leaving a wife, but no children; Henry Eppler, aged 18 years, unmarried, and Charles Walbert, aged 37 years, leaving a wife, but no children. The seriously injured are James Bauscher, aged 45 years, who will probably die; Samuel Eppler, arm broken and injured internally, and William Bortz, badly scalded. Several others were slightly hurt. The boiler was torn in two parts, one section taking a direct course through the building and landing 600 feet from the Works. The other section was hurled nearly as great a distance. That part of the building in which the boiler was located was shattered. The Works had forty hands in employ, only a few of whom, however, were in the building when the explosion occurred. Some contend that the boiler was old and rotten, while the proprietors of the works assert that the injector refused to work, and that when the water got too low the boiler exploded. The engineer was at work at the injector at the time, and although knocked down, he was not seriously injured. An inquest was held in the evening on the bodies of the dead. The testimony showed that the steam gauge registered sixty pounds when the boiler went off, and that shortly before that the injector, which pumps water into the boiler, had refused to work. In addition, one witness, an engineer at the factory, testified that the boiler was leaking, while another stated under oath that the engineer, Samuel Epler, who was injured, was engaged on Sunday in repairing the boilers. The inquest was then adjourned until yesterday for securing an expert to examine the boiler. Two of the injured will die.
