Two prominent residents of eastern Berks county, friends for more than half a century, died less than twelve hours apart. Samuel B. Latshaw died Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary A. Bechtel, Bally, and James B. Funk died Sunday evening at his home in Clayton, near Bally. Neither was told of the illness of the other. Mr. Funk died of paralysis, aged 84 years, and Mr. Latshaw had been bedfast for fourteen weeks with ureamic poisoning. He was 83 years, 3 months and 12 days of age. Both Mr. Funk and Mr. Latshaw were retired millers, having engaged in the business in 1873 with mills about four miles apart, the Latshaw mill near Barto and the Funk mill in Clayton. The two men had much in common and spent considerable time together. Both were members of the Hereford Mennonite church, Bally. On Sunday, October 7, Mr. Latshaw missed his first communion service in half a century and on that day Mr. Funk also was unable to attend communion for the first time in an equal period. The two aged friends always sat together during the church services and always lent their staunch support to community and church projects. Mr. Funk was one of the two organizers of the first Christian Endeavor society in rural Berks county and was active in the affairs of the local organization which was founded in 1887. He was a deacon in the Hereford Mennonite church for forty-four years and four years ago was made deacon emeritus. Mr. Latshaw was a leader in the Sunday school and directed the singing. Since retiring from business a number of years ago, he had been living with his daughter, Mrs. Mary Bechtel, Bally. He was second vice president of the First National Bank of Bally since its organization in 1909 and was reelected a week ago. There survive Mr. Funk the following children: Ambrose, Tendlecon, Oregon; Horace, Augusta, Georgia; Warren, Washington, D.C.; Oswin and Cora, both of Palm. One step-brother, Milton Johnson, New Berlinville, also survives. Mr. Latshaw is survived by two daughters, Mary A., widow of Irvin H. Bechtel, and Amy, wife of Dr. Oswin W. Berkey, both of Bally. While a double funeral has not been planned for the two old friends, the services will be practically the same, will be held on the same day and an hour apart. The funk funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock with all services in the Hereford Mennonite church, Bally. Interment will be made in Union cemetery, Bally. Rev. Dr. Aaron S. Leinbach, one of the oldest and best known Reformed ministers in eastern Pennsylvania, died at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at his residence in Reading of catarrh of the stomatch, aged 70 years, 11 months, and 18 days. He had not been in the best of health for several years, and for this reason he resigned the pastorate of all his congregation about a year ago. He took to his bed about three weeks ago. During the past few days, he was unconscious. There was apparently no suffering and when the end came, he passed away surrounded by his family as quietly and gently as a child going to sleep. For the twenty-four hours previous to his death, he only recognized friends and members of his family only at intervals. During this time he constantly repeated favorite texts of Scripture and among the last words that he uttered was the passage, "The Lord Is My Strength." Funeral Saturday, June 27, at 1 p.m. Rev. Dr. Aaron Selbert Leinbach was a son of the late Rev. Thomas H. and Elizabeth Leinbach and was born July 20, 1825, in Spring Township several miles from Reading. He was one of a family of thirteen children, the following of whom survive: Rev. Samuel Augustus Leinbach, Mrs. Maria Walborn, Mrs. Clara Dundore, Mrs. Ema Loose, all of Myerstown, and Mrs. Levina Reber of Philadelphia. After gaining a preliminary education in the public schools of Lebanon County, where his father served a congregation, he entered Marshall College of Mercersberg, graduating in 1846. In 1848, he was licensed to preach. He served many charges in Lebanon and Berks Counties and for nearly half a century was one of the most active and influential ministers of the Reformed Church. Dr. Leinbach is survived by his widow, who was his second wife, and four children, Jacob J. S. Leinbach, Mrs. Adam R. Rieser, Mrs. Morris Schaffer and Mrs. John Armstrong. His son, Rev. John H. Leinbach, a prominent Reformed clergyman, died less than a year ago, and another son, Thomas, died about three years ago. His first wife was Eliza Amanda Schantz of Allentown, to whom he was married January 8, 1856. She died August 12, 1867.
