DEATH OF DAN'L J. PARKER - A Well-Known Oyster and Truck Dealer - Sketch of His Busy Life - Daniel J. Parker died at his residence 1007 Penn, at 5 p.m. last Thursday, aged 56 years 9 months
and 18 days. As a fish truck and oyster dealer, the deceased was known to almost every man, woman and child in the city and there are very few people in this section who have not heard of "Dan."
Parker. He was not in the best of health for the past 6 months, but he was only bedfast a week. At first he was afflicted with a brain affection, the result of a fall. It was the general
opinion that he would recover, but Thursday afternoon he was seized with paralysis of the heart, which was the direct cause of his death.
Mr. Parker resided here over 30 years, and owing to his occupation became acquainted with all classes of people. He was 5 feet 9 inches in height, and energetic, enterprising, speculative
and liberal. While suffering 8 or 9 years with rheumatism, often very severely, he maintained his cheerfulness and readiness at repartee.
Mr. Parker was left an orphan when a boy of 7 years, and since the age of 9 has been making his own living. He was never without work, and contended that any man who is able to work can
always find something to do and need not be idle. Although starting in life a poor boy, Mr. Parker made and spent two or three fortunes. In handling peaches alone he made in 1872 nearly
$500 in one week. He placed on special deposit $600 in Bushong's bank that year and forgot all about it, until he was notified by postal card in 1877 to call and take it away.
He was married 3 times and was the father of 12 sons, 6 with his first wife and 6 with his second.
The following is given to show the characteristic enterprise of Mr. Parker: In the fall of 1872, when farmers here were asking 75 and 80 cents a bushel for potatoes, he bought 22 car loads
of New York state potatoes, which he sold in Reading and reduced the price to 50 and 60 cents, which he says "was for the benefit of the poor." He also claims to have been one of the
originators, with Capt. Ibbotson, of the idea of selling schooners of beer to working men, and which was practically carried out by the captain in 1878.
Mr. Parker was born in Worcester, Mass., March 13, 1840, and raised at Tarrytown, on the banks of the Hudson River, in West Chester County, New York. His father, who departed this life in
1847, was an oysterman on the Hudson up to the day of his death. In 1849 Daniel went to sea as a cabin boy on the schooner "Sarah Dolphin," which sailed light from Tarrytown to Albany, from
where a load of lumber was taken to Boston. The next was a cargo of coal from Elizabeth to New London. He was a cabin boy 4 months, then cook 2 years on an oyster boat on the Hudson, and
finally a deck hand on the steamboat, "Arminia," plying in the day time between Albany and New York.
In 1854 Mr. Parker moved to Philadelphia, and for 2 years followed the occupation of dredging for oysters in the Delaware and Chesapeake bys. During the winter of 1856 he had charge of an
oyster packing house on Pratt St., Baltimore, but the following spring found him back in Philadelphia, where he commenced huckstering with a wagon. Owing to the great panic of 1857, he soon
quit the business, but not desiring to be idle, found employment in paving 5th and 6th Streets; then to the Norton building, 5th and Penn, and from there to 6th below Penn, Eagle building.
He spent the centennial year in Philadelphia as manager of the big fish house at 1117 Filbert Street, for E. G. Blackford, NY.
Returning to Reading, Mr. Parker engaged in the fish, oyster and truck business in Heizmann's building, 6th and Cherry, but in 1878, opened the "Parker House," at 518 Penn, where he conducted
a first-class restaurant and saloon 4 years, and then, in 1882, took charge of the Lancaster Avenue hotel. Selling out there he opened a new place of business at 19 North 8th, known as the
"Parker House."
Next he took charge of the Flying Hill Park Hotel and was its proprietor for nearly 4 years, after which he started a hotel on the Kutztown road, but only run it for a year, when he took charge
of the cafe under the Hotel Penn, running that for a short time, and then moved to 1007 Penn, where he conducted a restaurant, and sold oysters, fish, etc.
Deceased is survived by his mother, Mrs. Rebecca Boyle, of Philadelphia, now in her 88th year. His mother was at his bedside when he died. His wife, Elizabeth and these children, John, Daniel,
William and George, all of this city, and 3 sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Campbell, of Nyack, NY; Mrs. Mary Hall and Mrs. Kate Roland, of Philadelphia, survive.
He was a member of Juniata tribe No. 74, I. O. of Red Men, Liberty Fire Company, Schuylkill Camping Club and the Volunteer Firemen's Association, of Philadelphia, having been a member of the
Fairmount engine company when the department was volunteer.
Mr. Parker was a generous nature, liberal to a fault, and never knew the value of a dollar when it was needed to relieve the distressed. He dealt largely in game in season and in this enjoyed
a large trade. He was an authority on all matters connected with the fish and oyster business, and kept thoroughly posted on all points of the trade. Personally he was most companionable and
always maintained his good humor. In firemen's parades in which the Liberty participated he was always a familiar figure and accompanied the company on several of its trips.

Solon L. Parkes, nationally known as the originator of the custom of planting trees on Mother's Day and the man who was commissioned by the Lehigh Portland Cement Co. to conserve the Washington tree — a horse-chestnut presented by the first President to General Robert Brown — on the company's property at Bath, died instantly at Topton on Tuesday afternoon while trimming a hedge. He was 63 years of age. He was the first master of a troop of Boy Scouts in Berks county, served as an engineering corps during the construction of the Allentown-Reading trolley line and in his later years supervised the planting of great areas of trees in reforestation projects. Parkes was honored by several presidents when he broke ground for the planting of Mother's day trees on the White House grounds. He was a native of Lyons and in recent years had resided in Reading.
