Seized with a fit of melancholia, Mrs. Haas, of Topton, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Butz, one of Berks County's wealthiest families, committed suicide by drowning herself in an abandoned minehole on Tuesday night. Her body was recovered on Wednesday. She was forty-five years of age. Mrs. Haas left her home Tuesday evening. Her daughter Ella asked her whither she was going and replied, “I'll tell you when I come back.” This was the last seen of her. Her husband, whose place of business is in Reading, returned at seven o'clock in the evening and about eight o'clock he became anxious over Mrs. Haas' whereabouts. Searching parties were organized. Wednesday morning at dawn the parties went out again. The routing car of Mr. Butz was pressed into service. About three miles outside of Topton, at the mineholes of Longsdale, a body was seen floating on the surface of the water. It was the body of Mrs. Haas. Her son, Nevin, a member of the party in the machine, divested himself of his clothes and dived into the water and recovered the body. The remains were removed to the home of her parents with whom Mr. and Mrs. Haas have resided since their marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she is survived by three children, Nevin, Hilda and Ella. One brother, Milton Butz, also survives. Funeral Monday at 9.30 at Longswamp Church.

Perma Haas, the 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey S. Gottshall, of Hancock, died fifteen minutes after being admitted to the Allentown hospital last night from injuries suffered when she was run down and struck by an automobile while delivering newspapers in the vicinity of her home. The little girl received a fractured skull and fractures of both legs. Carl Moll, a son of Justice of the Peace Moll, of Topton, was the driver of the machine that struck and fatally injured the little girl. According to the report given state highway patrolmen from the Temple barracks, the girl alighted from her father's machine, then passed around the rear of the car and ran into the highway directly into the path of Moll's machine, which was traveling north on the road between Hancock and Topton. Perma and her older sister, Eva, had accompanied their father to the Topton station, where daily he picks up a bundle of evening papers for distribution to subscribers in Hancock. At the time of the mishap they were on their way back to Hancock and the car was stopped to allow Perma to get off and begin serving her route. Following the accident, Moll started away to summon a physician. In the meantime the child's father hurried his daughter to the office of Dr. Charles Smith, at Topton. Realizing that she was critically injured, Dr. Smith accompanied by Mr. Gottshall, brought the child to the Allentown hospital, where she died at 8.15 o'clock. Coroner A. M. Peters, M.D., viewed the body at the local hospital. Later he made a report to Coroner Ammerill, of Berks county, in whose jurisdiction the accident happened. The little victim of the accident was a daughter of Mrs. Gottshall by a former marriage. Besides her mother and step-father, she is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Helen Hausman, Ethel, Lottie and Eva Reinert, all at home. Her step-father is a truck driver for the Topton Rug company.

The information gathered by the Berks county coroner convinced that official that the accident was unavoidable. The body of the girl was removed to the establishment of Undertaker Irwin DeLong at Topton and is being prepared for the funeral which will be held Tuesday afternoon with brief services at the home of the parents at 1.30 o'clock, daylight time. Peter S. Haintz, a prominent citizen of Hamburg, Pa., died on Saturday morning last at 7 o'clock, after a brief illness with bilious cramp, at the age of 46. He was a son of our townsman, William Haintz, residing on Chew street, and was born in the village of Trexlertown, this county. He was a cabinet maker by trade, and in his earlier years worked in the shops of Simon Price, in this city. From here he drifted to Hamburg, and on the outbreak of the war enlisted in one of the Pennsylvania regiments, and did [unreadable line] prisoner in one of the rebel prison pens. Soon after his return home he was made postmaster at Hamburg through the influence of Gov. Hartranft, and which position he held until about three years ago. Along with the post office he kept a book, stationery and notion store, and which business he continued up to the time of his death. A more serious bereavement could not have befallen the community in which he lived than the unexpected demise of one who had such a large number of very intimate friends and loved ones, and what makes the event so much the more sad was his previous extremely good health and prospect for a long life. He was an honest, sober and industrious man --- one of good social qualities. His death was a source of sincere regret to the citizens of Hamburg and vicinity, who esteemed him as one of the best men of their community. A dutiful son, a kind and loving husband, a truly honest and enterprising and peaceful, highly respected and law-abiding person, his death is a sad deprivation to the people of the town, as well as an inestimable and irretrievable loss to his aged parents and sorrow stricken family.

Death of Jacob Hartranft. A Prominent Merchant and Citizen of Pottstown Passes Away.
Jacob Hartranft of this borough, who was stricken down by a sudden attack of paralysis of the brain, while at his store, on Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock, lingered in an unconscious condition until Friday evening about 5:30 o'clock, when he passed away calmly and peacefully, in the midst of his sorrowing family. The news of his departure caused a feeling of deep sadness and regret in this community, where the deceased had passes so long a period of his life where he had for so many years such intimate business relations, and where he had been so highly esteemed by all. Deceased was the son of John and Sarah Hartranft, was born in Exeter Township, Berks County, and his age was 61 years and 26 days. His boyhood days were passed at Sumneytown, Montgomery County, but he came to Pottstown in 1841 and entered as salesman [in] the store of A. Smith & Son, remaining there about four years. He left there to assist in opening a store for the late Tobias G. Haenge, in Hatfield Township, and was there six months. Returning to Pottstown he accepted a position in the store of J. & W. H. Smith, as a salesman and clerk; in 1847 he purchased one third interest in the business, the firm being changed to Smith & Hartranft. In 1855 his brother, Ephraim Hartranft, purchased the interest of Jonas Smith, and the title of the firm became Smith, Hartranft & Co. In 1860 William H. Smith withdrew from the establishment, which has ever since been successfully conducted by Ephraim and Jacob Hartranft, at the old stand southwest corner of High and Hanover Streets, under the firm title of Hartranft & Brother. The deceased gave close attention to his business affairs, was a genial, straight-forward and energetic man, and leaves behind a most honorable record as merchant and citizen. At the time of his decease he was a Director of the Pottstown Gas Company , and Trustee and Treasurer of the Pottstown Cemetery.
Jacob Hartranft was twice married, his first wife being Esther, daughter of Jonas Smith, and the second Caroline K., daughter of the late Aaron L. Custer. The latter survives him. He was the father of five children: Sarah A. wife of William H. Missimer; Jonas S.; Mary S., deceased; John W. and William C. Hartranft, the first four children of the first and the last of the second wife. His father, John Hartranft, came to Pottstown in 1843 and died on November 12, 1854, in his 55th year; his mother died December 18, 1870, in her 75th year. First Clerk of Select Council, Reading, Berks County, PA.
DEATH OF B. F. HAUS, ESQ. LOSS OF A VALUABLE CITY OFFICER.
Reading is called upon to mourn the death of an estimable citizen and a city
officer whose place will be exceedingly hard to fill. It is with deepest regret that we
announce this morning the death of B. F. Haus, Esq., the City Clerk, which took place
yesterday afternoon, shortly after 3 o'clock, at his residence, No. 44 North Seventh
street. One week ago yesterday Mr. Haus contracted a cold on the fair grounds, and this
resulted in inflammation of the bowels. But few persons were aware of his dangerous
sickness, and his death came like a shock upon his friends. Mr. Haus was a native of Lewisburg, Union county, and came to this city about the year
1847. He learned the printing business with Hon. J. Lawrence Getz in the Old Gazette
office, and had charge of that paper during Mr. Getz' services as a member of the legislature in the winter of 1856. Subsequently he became connected with the Journal office, and had charge of that paper during the absence of its proprietors who were in
the service of the State during the rebel invasion of 1863. He was a pleasing, graceful
writer and a first class printer. He had been connected continuously with the City
government for the past ten years, and had much to do with revising the present City
Charter. In his position as Clerk of the Select Council, nearly the whole labor of
preparing the ordinances and other papers of the city fell to his lot. He also
was clerk of the different Council Committees and Secretary of the Board of Health, and
the multifarious duties of these several positions he had at his fingers' ends. His
pleasant manner and genial disposition made him popular with every one having business
at the City Hall. He was a faithful and attentive official, and it was not an
infrequent occurrence for him to be at his office until 11 and 12 o'clock at night in
the discharge of the laborious duties of his position.
The fact is, this had much to do with the breaking down of his strong constitution, and
it can be truly said of him that he died with the harness on. He was also a prominent
member of the Masonic Order and other organizations. Mr. Haus was about 42 years of
age, and leaves a wife and six children, who have the sympathies of this entire
community in their affliction. The time of the funeral has not yet been announced. [Source: Reading Times & Dispatch, No. 149 (Reading, PA), Saturday, September 27, 1873. Submitted by: Frank and Alina Haus.]
Benjamin Franklin Haus. First Clerk of Select Council, Reading, Berks County, PA.
DEATH OF B. F. HAUS, ESQ.
B. Franklin Haus, Esquire, well known to all our citizens in his official position as
City Clerk, died yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock, at his residence, No. 44 North
Seventy street, after a few days' illness, of inflammation of the bowels, resulting
from a cold contracted at the agricultural fair on Friday of last week. In the death of Mr. Haus the various departments of our city government lose a
most valuable officer, whose familiarity with his duties and efficiency in their
performance rendered his services indispensable. Originally elected Clerk to the
Select Council, he was subsequently called upon to act as Clerk to the several joint
committees of the Councils, and more recently as Secretary to the Water Board and Secretary to the Board of Health, the multifarious duties of all which positions were
discharged by him with extraordinary accuracy and dispatch. No one in any clerical
office ever worked harder, and no one's work was better done. To habits of close
industry, he united a modest demeanor and an agreeable manner which made him a favorite
with all who had business to transact at the City Hall. After a faithful service of
ten years, he has literally "fallen with his armor on", leaving upon our municipal
records the memorials of a useful life, which will go far toward enabling his
successors in office to supply the place for which his equal can hardly be found. Mr. Haus was a graduate of that school which has produced the best men in almost
every pursuit of life--the printing office. We was born at Lewisburg, Union County,
and came to the city with his parents, when a youth, about the year 1846. As is the
case with almost every boy who is given the name Franklin, he has picked up some
knowledge of type-setting, and expressing a desire to become a printer, he was placed
under the charge of Hon. J. Lawrence Getz, in the office of the Reading Gazette. He
advanced rapidly in his art, and soon became an expert in its various branches. While
diligent in his mechanical duties, he availed himself of every opportunity that the
printing office afforded for the improvement of his mind, and for several
years before he left the Gazette office, was a frequent contributor to the editorial
columns of that paper, particularly in its local department. He wrote with facility, and in a graceful style, in which observation, reflection, and a lively imagination bordering upon the humorous, we his characteristics. Has he adopted the editorial
profession, he could not have failed in attaining to prominence as a journalist. He
abandoned the printing office for the counting room and was for some time in the employ
of the old hardware firm of Friskier, Stevenson & Co. as clerk. Subsequently he
accepted a place in the Journal office, and had charge of that paper during the absence
of the proprietors in the military service of the State at the time of Lee's invasion.
While connected with that office, he was elected to the clerkship of the Select Council, the duties of which soon required his exclusive attention. and he then finally retired from the profession in which he had given bright promise, to devote himself,
with no less assiduity and usefulness, to his labors at the clerks' desks in the City
Hall, which the disease that has stricken him down compelled him to relinquish only on
Monday last. Mr. Haus was about 42 years of age. He was the son-in-law of Mr. George Foos, the
well-known builder of this city, and leaves a widow with six children, who have the
heartfelt sympathy of his numerous personnel friends and official associates in this,
their sudden and crushing bereavement. He was a member of Lodge No. 62, A.Y.M., and
for several years its secretary. He was also connected with Metamora Lodge, No. 147,
I.O.O.F., and Goethe Lodge, No. 60, D.O.H. [Source: Reading Daily Eagle, No. 207 (Reading, PA) Saturday , September 27, 1873. Submitted by: Frank and Alina Haus.] In this city, on the 24th inst., Martha E. (nee Shultz), widow of Richard V.B. Haus, in the 76th year of her age.

DEATH OF A RESPECTED CITIZEN:
Yesterday, Michael Hauser, florist and gardener,
died at his residence on Centre Avenue, opposite the Charles Evans Cemetery,
after a few weeks illness from congestion of the lungs and heart disease. Mr.
Hauser was a native of Baden,Germany and served as apprenticeship as a
florist and gardener the Rhine. After coming to America, he traveled
through a number of the States, after which he located permanently in charge
of a garden then the property of the late General George M. Kelm. The garden
covered a tract of land at present occupied by the Henry Clay Furnaces of the
Messrs.. Eckerts in the southernsection of the city. Here it was that Mr.
Hauser laid the foundation of his success and established a good reputation
among his leading families of that day. Subsequently, Mr. Hauser purchased a
small property on North Ninth Street near the junction with Eighth and
started there a truck garden of his own. By energy and close attention to
business, he secured a handsome competency and in 1861 he purchased nearly a
hundred acres on Centre Avenue, opposite Charles Evans Cemetery and
established there an extensive nursery, which he carried on until the day of
his death. The cultivation and sale of flowers was commenced by him about the
year 1840 and each succeeding year witnessed a marked increase in the
demand. He was the oldest florist in the county andone of the best
practical botanists in the States. He was a well known citizen, had a
generous disposition and was a man of the strictest honesty. Some time ago.
Mr. Hauser presented several acreas of ground to the Catholic Church on
which to erect a Cathedral, it being his earnest desire to have Reading made
the See of a Bishop. Last winter, he sold several acres of his valuable
premises upon very liberal terms to the management of the Reading Dispersary,
for the purpose of building a hospital. He was a devoted husband and father,
and leaves a wife and five children: two sons and three daughters. One of
his daughters is the wife of Chief Cullen, of the Reading Police Force.
