Index Page of Newspaper Articles from
Washington County Pennsylvania (PA)
which include many different surnames

The majority of newspaper articles contain numerous surnames.  In the past, newspapers used 'Community Columns' such as 'Local Glances' to cover a whole neighborhood, in which writers noted the the comings and goings of persons and families.  "Correspondents" - a person who lived in that section or neighborhood - collected interesting tidbits from persons living in that area, and delivered these one-or two-sentence items to the newspaper office.  These appeared on a monthly basis, until the paper became a weekly, then a daily.

People enjoyed seeing their own name in print (usually), and it helped sell a few more newspapers if the family could afford it.  Interestingly, for the very early newspapers especially, it is unlikely that many citizens even knew their name was in the paper until much later, if ever. Community Items continue in today's newspapers.

Presented here are complete and incomplete articles, etc.  Incomplete items surrounded full articles on Xerox copies.  Also, sometimes my sister only noted the date and surnames, so I do not have the full article.
