Wife of Charles Frederick Hoose Mother of Carol Hoose Brotzman
High School Graduation Photo 1946 Photo contributed by Carol Hoose Brotzman
On October 12, 2011, Mildred Louise (Shefler) Hoose, mother of our contributor
Carol (Hoose) Brotzman, passed away at age 83. She was one of the last surviving members of the "Crawford Old Guard" in northern Pennsylvania, as you will learn below. You will find a memorial selection of collected cards and memorabilia at the
The Treasures of Mildred Louise Shefler. You can also learn more about "Louise" below, and can find her Death Notice on this web site. But such formalities are seldom much of a
real description of our loved ones. So, here is a testimonial tribute created by Carol in honor of her mother:
Our Moms, they are so special to all of us in different ways. Do we ever give them enough credit for all they do? Do we just stop to say "thank you"? How often do we stop to think just what they did in their lifetime in order to " just" make ends meet? Moms are special, everyone of them. My mom, Mildred "Louise" Shefler Hoose was a very special woman to us. She went home to be with the Lord October 12, 2011. She was a courageous woman who was capable of just about anything, while tenderly caring for her family. For many years she was in charge of milking and feeding a herd of dairy and beef cattle. She could run just about any kind of machinery, and did. During World War II she was trained to work in the wood and metal shops. After graduating from the Tunkhannock High School in 1946 she was trained as a licensed practical nurse, which she never practiced. It could be said she was a jack of all trades. She mastered many of them.
She was no stranger to death in her formative years. When she was 4 years old her older brother Glenn Edward Shefler (May 14, 1923 - June 2, 1932) died of Hodgkin's Disease. Next, was her father, George "Burton" Shefler (January 18, 1881 - April 14, 1934) who died just before her 6th birthday. It was then her mother decided to sell the family farm to Myron Baker and move back to be with her parents Preston Lafayette and Mary Caroline Thrasher Crawford in Colley, Sullivan County, PA. They both yearned for their old home in Lemon. When mom's grandmother, Isabell Lucy Beebe Shefler died in October 1935, her mother made the big decision, uprooted her one more time and moved them back to Lemon. Her mother purchased the Beebe home which was just a short distance from their old home where she remained for the remainder of her life. So many deaths for a young girl to deal with. All she had that was constant in her life was her mother Ellen Lorena Crawford Shefler (January 13, 1896 - October 28, 1990). When she was born May 11, 1928 on the family farm in Lemon Township, Wyoming County, PA, her mother wanted to name her Constance. Grandma Isabelle Shefler would have nothing to do with that name. She wasn't named Mildred Louise Shefler until the 4th of July. That is a long time to go without a name. The name "Mildred" was promptly dropped. She was always known as Louise. The 1930 census names her as Louise M. Shuffler.
In her high school years, World War II was raging. She was the champion "milk weed" collector. She collected
the most milk weed pods in the Tunkhannock School district. They were used to make parachutes.
She was a pirate in the play the "Pirates of Penzance". She loved participating in plays and
working in the wood and mechanical shops. She graduated from the Tunkhannock High school in
May 1946 as a member of the National Honor Society. In the fall of 1946, when her friends were enlisting in
the Army, she started to study nursing at Misericordia College . She never finished her studies, her
heart wasn't in it. She fell in love. She had met Charles Frederick Hoose (November 8, 1908 - November 23, 1991) at the "Windy Mill" dance hall in Black Walnut. They were married on February 17, 1947 in Athens, PA. They enjoyed hunting deer, turkey and bear with their best friends Charley and Bertha Jenney. They started a small farm on the Milan East Smithfield Road before their first daughter, Donna Marie Hoose was born in October 1950. Their next child, Carol Ann wasn't born until March 1954. By this time Charley was employed by the American Bridge Company, in Horseheads, New York. Mom was in charge of the meat
rabbits they were raising to sell, and by 1959 she was milking a herd of dairy cattle on a larger farm they
had purchased just a mile up the road. They only moved a mile, but the address changed from R.D.#1 to Star Route Milan, PA.
As her daughters grew, she became community oriented. She was a Brownie leader, and then later she was the leader of the East Smithfield Junior Girl Scout Troup. In the early 1960's she became a founding leader of the East Smithfield Flying Needles Sewing 4H club. She stayed involved in the 4H clubs until 1972.
Together, with her family by her side, over the years the family raised registered Jersey's, a beef herd, some horses, some sheep, even dabbled in a few chickens and ducks. With the daughters growing up, life changed for mom. She began to slow down some. Donna married Michael Spencer in May 1969. The next April, a grandson Christopher Michael Spencer was born. Donna was to give her a granddaughter in June 1973,
Nicole Spencer. She loved being a doting grand mom. In March 1973, when her youngest daughter Carol married Francis "Dale" Brotzman they sold all the remaining animals. In 1974, the farm was sold, and they moved to a new home on the Ballantine Road where they remained the remainder of their lives. Carol and Dale gave her three more grandchildren, Amanda Louise in June 1974, Francis Charles in 1975 and Mary Ellen in 1977. Twenty six years after the birth of her first grandson, the six great grandsons would start arriving to join her family.
For awhile, after they moved away from the farm mom was employed in the sewing industry and sold Avon. Her customized Avon ball point pens read "your bell ringer". She was an excellent seamstress. There was nothing she couldn't sew and make look beautiful. She enjoyed this time getting out with the ladies. Dad was home welding. He always had a project going on for someone. They spent many hours fishing and hunting, just being out together. Both were excellent marksmen. When dad became sick, she was right by his side the entire seven years. During that time in 1990 she even brought her mother home to live with them when she needed more care before she passed in October 1990. After dad passed in November 1991, she and her dog Duchess learned how to live alone together.
After returning home from his stint in the U.S. Navy, her grandson Chris stayed with her for a few years. About 1993 she got 3 gray cats who became her best friends. She spent her time doing crossword puzzles, needlepoint and erecting jigsaw puzzles with them. On October 12, 2011 the Lord said cometh, she was gone in an instant. I am sure she took the Lords hand and embraced all the glory he promises us. Ironically both she and dad were 83 years old when they passed. If we had known, and had time to say good bye what would we have said?
We love you mom, your family.

Generation No. 1
1. Preston Lafayette Crawford (in ascending order, descended from George Washington Crawford, son of Henry, son
of Benjamin, son of Benjamin Noah and Olivia "Olive" Carpenter Crawford) was born May 01, 1862 in Lake Carey,
Wyoming County, PA, and died March 03, 1952 in Sullivan County, PA. He was married to Mary Caroline Thrasher
by Reverend Berson on October 18, 1881 in Sullivan County, PA; she was the daughter of Levi B. Thrasher and
Anna Hunsinger. She was born June 03, 1864 in Forks Township, Sullivan County, PA, and died March 20, 1946 in Colley, Sullivan County, PA.

Notes for Preston Lafayette Crawford:
Preston Crawford came to Sullivan County PA March 9, 1881 from Wyoming County where he had been employed by
his father in the family saw mill at Lake Carey. George Washington Crawford, his father had charged all his sons
too much rent so they moved on. Preston went to Colley where he found employment with the Seeley Lumber Company.
He met, and then married, Mary Caroline Thrasher in the church parsonage. Preston's youngest and only sister
Ellen came later. She married Ben Luce in 1882 at about 14 years of age. Ben drowned in the early 1890's. She
then married William Ryant in 1896 and resided in Lopez. They adopted a daughter named Daisy (born c. 1892) that
died in 1902. Daisy is probably buried at Lopez. Ellen and William Ryant later returned to run the family mill
on Lake Carey. Preston's brothers George, Sherman and Chester all probably spent time in Sullivan County.
Chester and George ended up in Susquehanna County and Sherman in Scranton.
There is an irony here, George Washington Crawford, the father of the brood, was born in Sullivan County, New
York to Henry Crawford and his third wife Susanah Teel Crawford. The family records show more discrepancies.
The photo album clearly shows the family wedding day photo. However, there are two wedding day photo's. Mary is
wearing two different dresses. The fiftieth wedding anniversary clipping states they were married by Rev. Simon
Weinrich, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church. He wasn't even in Sullivan County at the time; he became pastor
the next year. Rev. Bursen was the minister for the Lutheran Church at that time and his photo is marked in the
photo album as the man that married them.
Preston and Mary started housekeeping in Colley where all the children were born except Marvin and Warren.
They moved to the farm at Crawford Knob about 1897. That was in Cherry Township. After the family was grown,
they sold and moved back to Colley. They were active in local and National Grange. Both were members of the
Zion Lutheran Church. Preston served as sexton for many years for the Zion or Thrashers Cemetery as it was known
in that time.

Here is another picture of Preston and several family members taken in 1950 at a Crawford Family Reunion in Colley, PA. The picture contains a rare image of Preston's sister Ellen (Crawford) Ryant. Ellen was related by
marriage to the Ryant family, which in turn was related to the Saymans and Crawfords at a related date and by a
different pathway through the marriage in 1914 of Fred Ryant to Clara May Millhime. Clara was the daughter
of David Millhime and Colissa Sayman. Fred and Clara's daughter Linda married Carl J. Crawford in 1968, thereby
reconnecting the Sayman and Crawford families once again.

Notes for Lloyd Benjamin Crawford:
He died of pneumonia on ship on his deployment to Noyers, France
in World War 1. He was in the 163rd infantry. Just before he shipped out, Lloyd wrote a final letter home to his sister Ellen Crawford. It is
reproduced here as Lloyd Crawford's Last Letter. We are grateful to Carol Brotzman for providing this photocopy from the papers of Ellen (Crawford) Shefler.
His fiancee was Rebecca Elizabeth Stiff, born February 6, 1897; died January 25, 1977.
Here is a picture of the young couple taken in 1918. You can learn more about this family at The Descendants of
Henry Stiff and Mary Magdalena Huffmaster.
Carol Brotzman has this moving comment about Lloyd and Rebecca:
Lloyd Crawford was engaged to Rebecca Stiff, daughter of William C. and Alice Stiff. I felt this picture needed to be preserved.
This was an example of undying love, and a man who gave his all for his country, his life! This photo was taken
just prior to Lloyd leaving for service in World War I. He died in the Fall shortly after the picture was taken on his way to
France. He was the first man from the county to die for his country in World War I. If that was supposed to be comfort for his
grieving family, I don't see it. Rebecca never married after Lloyd's death.
Here is a picture of Lloyd and his brother Will together in 1900 in Cherry. This old
faded picture was restored by Amanda Brotzman, the daughter of our contributor.

Court Battle Over Church Brewing
BY JOSH MROZINSKI,
Wyoming County Press Examiner
SPRINGVILLE - A Meshoppen couple has filed an ejectment lawsuit in an attempt to gain ownership of property containing a 165-year-old church located north of Tunkhannock.
And current owners of the Lymanville Methodist Church hope that whatever happens, the historic Springville Township structure is preserved.
"It's important, it's historic and it is a beautiful church," Esther Clarke said.
Clarke and her husband, Lorne, incorporated the church as part of the nonprofit organization Lynn-Lymanville Community Church, in 2000.
According to the November complaint filed in the Susquehanna County Court of Common Pleas, the nonprofit organization acquired a deed for the property from the trustees of the Wyoming Conference of the United Methodist Church in August 2000.
William and Leoda Wilson of Meshoppen are arguing that they have a legal right to the property which they claim has been on land with more than two years of vacancy.
"It is believed that there have been no church services held in this church for over two years and the church has been vacant in excess of two years," the civil complaint states.
A hearing date has not been set, according to the Susquehanna County prothonotary's office.
William Wilson said Friday that he has no plans for the church at this time.
The church was built in 1842 and named The First Methodist Episcopal Church of Springville.
When it was discontinued by the Wyoming Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in June 1998, it was the second oldest church building in Susquehanna County to have continuous Methodist church services.
Along with an historic past, the church has also brought the community together.
BY ROBERT L. BAKER,
Wyoming County Press Examiner
Although it's about three miles south of downtown Springville smack dab in the heart of Lymanville, its charter calls it the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Springville.
Construction on the Lymanville church began in 1841 when the region's Methodist followers were in the Oneida Conference. It was dedicated the following year.
In 1855, three years after the Wyoming Conference's formation, the church at Lymanville was a central flagship church for the old Wyalusing District, an entity that existed in name until 1878.
In its infancy, the old white church at Lymanville was the heart of the region's Methodism with the circuit-riding minister there serving some 21 outposts including places like the budding villages at Nicholson, Tunkhannock and Meshoppen and even more isolated spots like Craig's Meadow, Starkville, Vose and Tallow Hill.
As the larger communities got their own churches and modes of transportation improved, time marched on (and some would argue past) Lymanville.
Less than a couple of miles north a 'new' Methodist church at Lynn was dedicated in 1883 and to its south another 'new' Methodist church came to be in 1891 at Lemon.
A Second Methodist Episcopal Church of Springville was actually built in the early 1890s and dedicated in 1893 in the village of that name and it is a thriving congregation today with Rev. Jane Bensley serving as pastor.
The growth of Methodist church buildings throughout the region in the 19th Century came to mirror that of the country, in which the larger denomination went on a building spurt.
Today, some 166 years after construction began at Lymanville, the United Methodist Church finds itself with more church buildings than zip codes, a challenge in which some have argued has people caring for lots of buildings as well as the hearts and minds of people outside the church's walls.
The Wyoming Conference at its peak in church building numbers, for instance, had 427 in 1906, but today has just 297.
Those built more than 100 years ago were designed to serve their village in a pre-automobile era. And, people did not worry about such things as indoor plumbing and central heating as they do today.
When the Conference voted to discontinue supplying the Lymanville church in 1998 with Methodist pastors, it did so with a heavy heart.
It knew of the rich history that six generations of Methodists did not want forgotten.
Following a snowstorm in 1996, people donated money for the repair of the church's ceiling beams.
Stained glass windows, many of which serve as memorials for residents who had lived in the community, were in danger.
To thank people for the donations, the Clarkes began to hold concerts a mile and a half away in the old Lynn Church that continue to this day.
"It was a tremendous amount of work and expense and people contributed a lot of money," Clarke said.
Today, the Lymanville Church continues to hold events such as weddings and has a special place in the hearts of the community, according to Clarke.
"We're just trying to preserve it so that it will be there for future generations," Clarke said.
You can learn more about the religious heritage of this area at The Wyoming Conference.
Notes for Ellen Lorena Crawford:
Ellen Shefler caught a ride with the mailman to Dushore, then took the Black Diamond train to Towanda.
From there she went to Tunkhannock. George" Burton" Shefler met her at the depot, they then went and got
married. The only people that knew what they were going to do were Will and Aunt Ellen Ryant. She mailed a
letter home to tell them she was married. That was in 1922. They resided on a farm in Lemon Township, Wyoming
County. After her husband died unexpectedly, she sold her farm and moved to Colley for a year. When her mother-
in-law's house came up for sale in Lemon, she returned "home" and never left Lemon again. She wrote the Lemon
Methodist church history and was a fine historian for the Hunsinger-Thrasher-Crawfod families. She recorded
history for both counties of Wyoming and Sullivan.

Note: Rush Hunsinger was later convicted of second degree murder in the death of Rodney Tuttle, the consequence
of a dispute between the two men at Hunsinger's hunting cabin on the road between Mehoopany and Dushore. The fatal dispute occurred on August 31, 1932. Hunsinger, age 63,
a resident of Colley, was tried in the Sullivan County Courthouse at Laporte by Judge Charles E. Terry. The trial took place in November 1932
and was covered by the Towanda Daily Review. It is reported in a collection of the "best news stories" of Wyoming County purchased
at a local fair by Carol Hoose Brotzman in 2001 (Wyoming County: The Last 100 Years, The New Age Examiner: Tunkhannock, PA, 2000, page 62;
the newspaper article itself was dated December 1, 1932
and apparently was originally published in The Tunkhannock Republican). According to Donna (Shaffer) Koble, the case was eventually
"proven to be self-defense due to body injuries and bruises on Rush Hunsinger. Rush died 12/6/34 from acute heart disease
and is buried at Colley Cemetery."
