Sullivan County, PA, and died October 24, 1984 in the Robert Packer Hospital Sayre, PA. He married Leontine (Teeney) Fenton February 18, 1924 in the Lutheran Parsonage, Dushore, PA on a Monday morning, the Reverend W. H. Fehr presiding. Leontine was the daughter of Louis Fenton and Anna Baker. She was born October 05, 1900 in Sugar Run, PA, and died April 25, 1974 in the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA.

CRAWFORD, WARREN J.

Services for Warren J. Crawford, 82, of Gillett, were held Oct. 27 at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home in Dushore. Rev. Richard Reeser, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Chapel officiated and interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Mr. Crawford died at Robert Packer Hospital on Oct. 24, 1984 following a lingering illness. He was born Nov. 16, 1901 in Cherry Twp., son of L. Preston and Mary Thrasher Crawford. He had been engaged in the farming industry most of his life. He was a member of Tombstone Sportsmen’s Club of Lovelton, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leontine Fenton Crawford who died in 1974, and by a son in 1972. Surviving are eight sons; James E. of Columbia X Rds; Lewis P.of Sugar Run; Donald of Wyoming; Lloyd P. of Sugar Run; Gordon E. of New Albany; Ervin E. of New Albany; Walter C of Wysox and Jessie W. of Horseheads; daughters, Mary Anna Barber of Binghamton, Mrs. Thomas (Evelyn) Shaffer of Rochester and Mrs. Francis (Marilyn) Stringham of Bentley Creek; sister, Ellen Shefler of Lemon, PA; fifty grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Notes for Warren James Crawford:

Warren resided most of his married life in the Bentley Creek, Bradford County, PA area. However he and his wife resided in various places in Sullivan and Bradford County. They raised their grandson Carl as their own son. All of their sons participated in the United States military in some branch!

Here is a picture of two of these children, Donald and Lloyd Crawford, with their aunt "Grandma" Ellen (Crawford) Shefler (1896-1990), Warren James' sister. The picture was taken at Crawford's Knob on the old Crawford farmstead near Dushore at a family reunion in 1985.

He married (1) Arvilla Alice Benjamin June 22, 1946, daughter of Lloyd Benjamin and Lelia Babcock. She was born February 05, 1920 in Mildred, PA, and died August 04, 1998 in the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA. He married (2) Jeanne Lawrence Benjamin July 04, 1999 in Troy, PA, the Magistrate Lynn Ayres presiding. Jeanne was the daughter of Edson Lawrence and Maud Hilfiger. She died May 12, 2008 and is interred at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Mildred, PA [obit below].

Jeanne H. Crawford, age 76, of New Albany, Pa., passed away on Monday, May 12, 2008, at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. She was born on July 4, 1931, in Blossburg, Pa., a daughter of the late Edson and Maude (Hilfiger) Lawrence. Prior to her retirement in 1995, she was employed at Hurleys Market, giving 13 years of service. On July 4, 1999, Jeanne married James Crawford. She moved to New Albany in 1999, having moved from Troy. Jeanne's family was her great love. She enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, and she found pleasure in cooking and baking. Surviving is her husband: James Crawford, at home; her seven children: Larry and Marion Wood, of Middlebury Center, Pa., Mike Wood, of Tioga, Pa., Jack and Roberta Wood, Troy, Pa., Susan Tomko, Towanda, Pa., Carol and William Gernert, of Columbia Cross Roads, Pa., Linda and Ron Morgan, of Troy, Pa., Ed and Cindy Wood, of Granville Center, Pa.; by sisters and brothers: Gene and Kate Hilfiger, of Horseheads, N.Y., Bette Boyden, of Mainesburg, Pa., Shirley and Richard Kenyon, of Troy, Pa., Joan and Gene Jackson, of Mainesburg, Pa.; by step daughter: Sharon Siciliano; her 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews, stepchildren and step grandchildren. Lewis and Lela moved to the farm in Hollenback in June 1949. They operated the farm until 1996 when their grandson Clinton took over the operation. Lewis remains on the farm with his grandson in 2002.

Golden anniversary open house is planned
Hollenback--An open house invitation is extended to family and friends of Lewis and Lela (sic) Crawford.
The celebration honoring the couple's 50th wedding anniversary will be held Sunday, April 23, from 2 to 5 p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. Crawford were married in a candlelight service held at the Mildred, PA Lutheran Church on April 19, 1945.
They moved to Hollenback in June 1949 where Lewis began operating a farm.
They have two children, Evelyn Benjamin and Lewis "Butch" Crawford Jr. of Hollenback. The Crawfords have six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and "three on the way", a family spokesman reports.
Everyone is welcome to attend Sunday's anniversary celebration.

Lewis "Poppy" Crawford Sr. 85, formerly of Sugar Run, Pa., passed away at the Williamsport Hospital on Friday April 1, 2011. Lewis was born on June 9, 1925, a son of the late Warren J. and Leontine Fenton Crawford of Wyalusing, Pa. He and his late wife Lela owned and operated a dairy farm and a butcher shop in Sugar Run for many years. Lewis loved spending time with his family on the farm, he enjoyed hunting and being outdoors. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
Lewis is survived by a daughter: Evelyn and (Derrick Rumbough) Benjamin; and a son: Lewis Jr. and Rosemarie Crawford; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; six brothers: James of New Albany, Gorden and "Pattie Chilson" of New Albany, Lloyd and Doris of Sugar Run, Ervin and June of New Albany, Donald of Noxen, Pa. and Jesse of Elmira Heights N.Y.; and two sisters: Evelyn Shaffer of Perkensville N.Y. and Marylin and Frannie Stringham, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9 at the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, PA 18853, with the Rev. William Westbrook officiating. Family and friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. on Saturday until the time of the service. Interment and military honors will follow in the Quicksbend Cemetery in Sugar Run. In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to the Wilmot Volunteer Fire Company, Sugar Run, PA 18846, in Lewis' memory.

4. Mary Anna⁷ Crawford (Warren James⁶, Preston Lafayette⁵, George Washington⁴, Henry³, Benjamin², Benjamin Noah¹) was born January 08, 1927. Mary never married the father of her first child. She never married Howard Johnson, but had a child named Carl by him. She married John Barber August 22, 1951 in Towanda, PA, the Reverend D. H. Hauser presiding, son of John Barber and Flora Wineings. He was born about 1931, and died in Towanda after 1983. She never married Dr. Keilty, a dentist in Towanda, PA, but has a child by him. She then had another child by an unknown man that she gave up for adoption. She married Marshall Scott about 1958. She died on June 29, 2006.

Notes for Mary Anna Crawford:

John Barber took his children away when they were approximately 5 and 7 years old. We know nothing more on these children. We would like to know about them if they read this or some other party with information does so.

As far as can be ascertained, Mary Anna only married John Barber and Marshall Scott.

Mary resided in the Endicott and Johnson City, New York areas.

Maryann Barber, 79, of Binghamton, died Monday, June 26, 2006, at Wilson Memorial Hospital following a long illness. She was predeceased by a great-grandson. She is survived by her partner in life, Marshall Scott; her children, Carl Crawford (Linda), John Barber (Norma), Shirley Barber, Marylou Sickler (Glen), Carol Traver (Miguel), Marsh Barber (Marti), Brenda Scott, Penney Bohanan (Bill), Dorothy Scott (Anees); 34 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; as well as several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, mostly in Pennsylvania. She worked at the Whispering Pines Nursing Home in Dimmock, Pa., and enjoyed attending the Golden Days Day Care Program at Susquehanna Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 137 Robinson Street, Binghamton. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. Friends are invited to call Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

June descends from Benjamin and Olive Carpenter Crawford through Benjamin and Catherine Bunnell Crawford; This second Ben Crawford was born in 1793 in Wyalusing, PA and married first to Ester Jayne who died young, leaving him with children to care for. Thomas Clayton Shaffer, 73, of Perkingsville, N.Y., passed away on Oct. 15, 2008.
He was born in Towanda, Pa., in 1935. He served in the U.S. Army and moved to Avon, N.Y., in 1959 and later to Perkingsville. He was a member of the Perkingsville Fire Department for 35 years, and a member of the American Legion and VFW. He loved the country life, deer hunting and his family. Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Evelyn Crawford. He has five sons, Charles, Thomas, James, William and Donald; grandchildren and great-grandchildren and Mickey Shaffer (nephew), whom he called his other son; brothers, Dean E. Shaffer of Geneseo and Robert A. Shaffer of Sayre, Pa.; sisters, Dolie J. Lane of Avon, Marion Manahan of New Albany, Pa., Bette Lestrange of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Carol Benninger of Sayre, Jerry Renzo of Burlington, Pa., Jeanne Shaffer of Waxahachie, Texas, Jacquilynne Doll of North Port, Fla., Virginia Pruyne of Athens, Pa., and Sylvia Gordon of Oceanside, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas C. Shaffer Sr. of Wysox, Pa., and Irene M. Shaffer of Avon; also James Shaffer Kilgore of Washington, D.C., Donald Dunham of Powell, Pa., Clifford Shaffer of Towanda, Monica Balatti of New York and Laura Triplett of North Carolina.
Tom will be sadly missed by his wife, family and many friends. Many thanks to Perkingsville Fire Department, VFW and American Legion. Donations can be sent to a cancer fund. Interment was in Wayland, N.Y.

August 7, 2017 PERKINSVILLE - Evelyn J. Shaffer, 75, passed away early Friday evening (Aug. 4, 2017) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Evelyn was born Sept. 4, 1941 in Cully, Cherry Township, Pa., the daughter of Warren J. and Leotine (Fenton) Crawford. She grew up in and resided in different areas of Pennsylvania. On Oct. 5, 1958, Evelyn and Tom Shaffer were married and together celebrated over 50 years together prior to Tom passing away in October of 2008. Evelyn and Tom resided in Pennsylvania, Avon, Lakeville and eventually settled in Perkinsville in the early 1970s. She has resided there ever since.
Evelyn worked as a dietician at Noyes Memorial Hospital for over 24 years, and upon retirement from there she worked at Wayland-Cohocton Central School for over 10 years, retiring from there as well. Evelyn loved to bake, crochet and she was a "social butterfly" that loved to visit with friends. She enjoyed cleaning houses for people and volunteering at the local funeral luncheons. Another favorite of Evelyn's was watching the bands at Sammie's in Dansville.
Evelyn was pre-deceased by her parents; her husband, Tom; and siblings, Lewis, Clayton, Walter, Lloyd and Mary.
She is survived by her children, Edward "Charlie" Shaffer (Katie) of Geneva, Thomas E. Shaffer of Wayland, James W. (Kelly) Shaffer of Wayland, William C. Shaffer (William L. Saunders) of Lakeland, Fla. and Donald C. (Anne) Shaffer of Nunda; a very special nephew and his wife, Ralph "Mickey" (Terry) Shaffer of Wayland; grandchildren, Tara Shaffer, Jessica Shaffer, Dylan Shaffer, Keileen Shaffer, Matthew Shaffer, Julia Shaffer, Jernee Smalt and her mother, Michelle Evans, Josh Sliker and Amanda Blonsky; her great-grandchild, Brooke Reynolds; her siblings, Jim Crawford of Pennsylvania, Ervon ( June) Crawford of Pennsylvania, Gordon Crawford (Patti) of Pennsylvania, Jesse Crawford of Elmira, Donald Crawford of Pennsylvania, Marilyn (Fran) Stringham of Pennsylvania and Karl (Linda) Crawford of Pennsylvania; along with many nieces and nephews.

Burton Benjamin Jr., 65, formerly of Sugar Run, Pa., passed away Friday afternoon, March 9, 2012 at the Highlands Care Center in LaPorte, Pa., following an extended illness. Burton was born June 27, 1946 in Monroeton, Pa., a son of Burton Benjamin Sr. and Jennie Johnson Benjamin. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam War having served in the US Army. Burton was formerly employed by McCarty's Garage in Wyalusing and by Don Strope's Garage in North Towanda. Burton later owned and operated his gas station and garage in New Albany, Pa., and a trucking and logging business for a number of years until his health declined in 1985. He was a member of the Hollenback Methodist Church and Wyalusing American Legion Post No. 534. Burton enjoyed the outdoors, working on farms, hunting, fishing and caring for his dogs. He was a NASCAR driver at Shangri-La Speedway in Owego, N.Y. for a number of years. Surviving are his children: David L. Benjamin (Cindy Vanderpool) of Gillett, Pa., Melissa L. Smith (Frank Armitage) of Wyalusing, Pa., Matthew B. Those we have held in our arm for a little while, we hold in our hearts forever…Our hearts were broken on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 with the sudden and unexpected loss of our son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin Brandon “Turtle” Alan Crawford, 21, of RR 1, Box 206M, Rome, Pa. Brandon was born on February 9, 1987 in Towanda, Pa the son of Teresa and Chad Evans and the son of Alan Crawford. Brandon was a graduate of Northeast Bradford High School Class of 2005. He was currently employed by XLC as a forklift operator. Brandon enjoyed playing “Rockband” 4-Wheeling, snowboarding, hunting and just hanging out with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Motorcyclist killed in Auburn crash

A Rome, Pa. man was killed when the motorcycle he was riding hit a tree on township road 317 in Auburn Twp. on Oct. 15.
Brandon A. Crawford, 21, was traveling west on TR 317 when his motorcycle went off the road into a ditch and then collided with a tree. Police reported Crawford was not wearing a helmet.
Police were assisted on the scene by Meshoppen Ambulance Company, Tyler Hospital Advance Life Support and Rt. 6 Towing.
