The Schmeckenbecher Lineage
The Thrasher name is alleged to descend from the Von Drescher family of Estonia.
Let's quote Odessa Thrasher of Williston, Florida on the
issue of origins:
There were four Von Drescher brothers that were printing subversive material against
the government. They lived in Estonia, which was at that time under the control of Germany.
They were told that they had to leave Estonia. The four brothers (no names, no dates) came to America as
mercenaries, likely before the Revolutionary War where many "German" mercenaries fought for the British crown, then stayed after the
fighting stopped.
Estonia is one of the Baltic nations on the east side of the Baltic sea. Its capital city is Tallinn and the city and country have been major
commerical crossroads for centuries. Unfortunately, Estonia has also been a victim of other nations' ambitions--Prussia, Germany, Austria, Poland, Russia, and Sweden. With the collapse of
the Soviet Union in 1989, Estonia once more regained its independence. Perhaps we will learn more about the Von Dreschers from their descendants or from sources in
Estonia. For now, we will pick up the story with Drescher/Thrasher ancestors whose names and locations we actually have knowledge of.

78 v. Henry Thrasher. *
79 vi. Viola Thrasher, m. Desmond "Des" Calley and lived in New Jersey.
* Editor's Note: Henry Edward Thrasher (1897-1918) was a seaman aboard the SS Cyclops when it left Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on February 16, 1918 with 306 souls on board. The ship, a collier more than 500 feet long, was bound for Baltimore, Maryland, but stopped for supplies on March 3-4 in Barbados. After that date, the ship was never seen or heard from again, and no trace of the wreck has ever been found. Rumors of various kinds have surrounded the disappearance of the Cyclops, the single largest loss of life in U.S. Naval history not directly involving combat. Some say it was lost in the Bermuda Triangle, others that German saboteurs aboard the ship mutinied and handed the ship and its crew over to German submarines, and others that the ship was torpedoed and lost at sea. Yet others blame the weather, since another steamer reported a storm along the intended path of sail. Finally, the captain himself came under suspicion, since he was born in Germany and was known to be a rigid disciplinarian. No one knows for sure. But, after World War One, no record or source was ever found or produced in Germany to suggest or support the claim that the Germans or their supporters had anything to do with the loss of the ship. The US Navy investigation that followed created over 1000 pages of documentation, which rest in the National Archives in Washington, DC. The mystery remains to this day. Here is a photo of the Cyclops taken briefly before her disappearance:
