The Descendants of Benedict (Gotlieb) Ortlieb

Generation No. 1

Benedict (Gotlieb) Ortlieb was born in Germany in 1829, and died June 2, 1889. His mother's name was THERESSA ________ and she was born about 1774 in Germany and died February 21, 1881 in Dushore, PA. After her husband died, she married John Mosier (1782-1859), the founding emigrant of the Mosier family in Sullivan county and the widower of Elizabeth Barey. You can learn more about the Mosier family at Faces and Families of Old Sullivan County, Group Five.

Benedict Ortlieb married (1) Paulena Litzelman before 1859, daughter of Mathias Litzelman from Elsets, Germany. Mathias came to America in 1828, locating in Cherry Township in what was then Lycoming County, later Sullivan County, PA about 1830.

Subsequently, Benedict married (2) Susan Thrasher after 1871 in Sullivan County, PA, daughter of Benjamin Thrasher and Anna Hunsinger. She is buried in the Thrashers (Old Zion) Cemetery in Dushore. She was born in 1844 and died in 1878. Benedict came to America from Germany about 1851 as a young man. He was a cabinet maker by trade located in Dushore, PA. Here is his obituary:

The Sullivan Review
June 6, 1889

Benedict Ortlieb, of this place, came to his death by drowning in Stefather’s millpond, one mile from Dushore, on Saturday afternoon last, aged 59 years, 7 months and 10 days. Interment was Quinn’s cemetery on Tuesday. He insisted on taking a bath in the pond, efforts to stop him being in vain. He divested himself of his clothing, with the exception of his shirt, sprang into the water up to his waist, dove in under, and never came to the surface. His body was recovered between 7 and 8 o’clock the same evening, being in the water about three hours. Squire Thomson impaneled a jury and held an inquest, which resulted in a verdict of death by accidental drowning. Deceased was a man of intemperate habits and it is supposed was partially intoxicated at the time of his death. He was a cabinetmaker by trade and had a wide reputation for skillfulness and fineness of workmanship. His friends were numerous and of enemies he had none.

Children of Benedict Ortlieb and Paulena Litzelman are:

i. J.V. "Victor" Ortlieb, born about 1863 in PA and died in Hollenback, PA on December 27, 1944. **
ii. Anna Ortlieb, born 1853 in Dushore, PA; died in 1926 in Elmira Heights, NY; married Seymour S. Garey
iii. Jerome N. Ortlieb, born March 03, 1859 in Dushore, PA; he was a stepchild.
iv. Maurice Ortlieb, died in Rochester, NY.
Note: Spelled "Morris" in obituary for brother Jerome Ortlieb.

What I have is the following: Mary Hannah (or Hannah Mary) died somewhere between 1932 and 1944 and is buried in the Thrashers Cemetery but no date on tombstone. Of interest is that she was married often; her maiden name is Benjamin, 1st married to a Matthews who died in 1881, 2nd to a Carroll who died in 1903, 3rd to a Layton who died in 1914 and then to Victor Ortlieb married in 1915. Victor's first wife was Esther Anne Hunsinger, daughter of Levi B. and Esther Frye Hunsinger. You probably have all that. This is information that I had before and the next paragraph is what I received just a month or so ago. Hope I am making sense. Not very long ago I got an email from another person interested in Mary Hannah Ortlieb and she sent me her death certificate, which I will try and forward to you. The date of death is Oct. 11, 1934.

Esther E, wife of Victor Ortlieb of Hollenback, died at the family home on Sunday evening at the age of 53 years.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday with Rev. W.H. Fehr officiating. Interment will be made in Thrasher cemetery. Her demise was very sudden. She was looking after an incubator they had set in the basement of the house when death came. Her lifeless body was found about an hour afterward lying beside the incubator. She had been in poor health for several years and death was due to heart trouble.
Besides her husband she is survived by one brother, P.W. Huntsinger of Cherry Township. Jerome Ortlieb of town is a brother-in-law.

Notes for Hannah "Mary E." Layton:

Query to Bob Sweeney from SCHS on 07/10/2008:

We've been searching for information on Hannah Mary (E.) Ortlieb. i have a cc of her death cert. which states that the physician attended her until Oct. 11, 1934 and that she was taken to Dushore and buried on the 13th. The woman inquiring thinks that she was buried in the Thrasher's Cemetery but I can't find record and she's not listed on your site (copied by the way, thank you). Hannah was married on March 16, 1915 and would have been the second wife of J. Victor Ortlieb. Do you have anything further that you could share with us? We further searched your site and saw Mary Layton depicted as second wife to J. Victor but that she died in 1915 (?). Any possibility of date being wrong?

She was the daughter of John Frey (1836-1918) and Sarah Landback (1840-1922) and was born in Beaver Township in Columbia County, PA, Both of her parents are buried in Thrashers (Old Zion) Cemetery. The relationship between the Ortlieb and Landback families produced a signficant number of offspring which you can learn more about at The Descendants of John Landback.

The Frey family originally came from Elsets, Germany. From there, they migrated to Germantown, PA. Dianna's grandfather, David Frey, Sr., was born there, but later moved to Luzerne County and Wilmot, Bradford County, PA. They finally settled in 1849 in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA. The Sullivan Review
November 28, 1928

An appreciation of the late Jerome N. Ortlieb
(contributed by his Pastor):

Jerome Napoleon Ortlieb came from German ancestry; his father Benedict, having been an immigrant, married Lena Litzelman. Jerome, born in Dushore, February 3, 1859 was one of the children of this union and who in childhood became identified with the Lutheran church and was brought up under its spiritual and moral nurture.
Not always but frequently men choose the calling of their fathers. Jerome followed his father’s trade and took up apprenticeship; learned carpentering and cabinet making, and in the use of saw, plane and chisel became a master, displaying the skill and talent of a great artist in wood.
His late residence on Carpenter Street stands as a splendid witness to his genius. The hardwood floors of checkerboard design tongued and grooved; the doors and window frames of cherry inlaid with ash and trimmed with walnut; the molding and corners, and the grills and scrolls of woodwork; the massive office desks, tables, bookracks, and other accessories, all of them the product of his patient, untiring handiwork, present a project of accomplishment that amazes anyone who understands the nature of such workmanship. It reveals a unique constructive capacity.
In brother Jerome, honesty was coupled with genius. Whether he built a barn or made a parlor ornament, he applied the same pains and produced a finished job, well done. Surely, in words of Holy writ he was a “workman that needeth not to be ashamed”. The Almighty Maker could say of His creation: “It is very good.” In some such spirit of satisfaction this human mechanic was wont to look upon his “creations”
We remember the subject of this sketch as head member of the firm known as the Dushore Construction Company. During an illness of more than a year, which slowly sapped his strength, Mr. Ortlieb displayed the same calmness of temperament and unfailing patience as in his days of activity at the carpenter bench. Never murmuring, he bore his sufferings like a Christian martyr. The remembrance of this good man, now departed, remains with us like the precious odor of spikenard.
A gentle husband, kind father, accommodating neighbor and upright citizen, he was respected and highly esteemed, for the substantial qualities of character he possessed. Released from all earthly sufferings at eleven o’clock Wednesday, November 14, 1928, our friend entered into life.
The funeral services were held in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pastor W.H. Fehr officiating. The funeral address was based on the words of St. Paul, 2 Cor. 5:1 “We know… we have a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”
Mr. Ortlieb was married twice. His first wife was Diana Frey daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Frey. Six years after her death, Jerome was wedded to his surviving widow, Jenny McHenry Ortlieb. A daughter, Miss Coloma Ortlieb, R.N., three sons, John, of San Francisco, Calif., Otto and Bernard of Dushore; two sisters, Miss Mary Ortlieb, and Mrs. Floyd Palmer of Auburn, NY, and two brothers, Morris Ortlieb of Rochester and Victor of Hollenback, and three grandchildren remain to mourn his demise.
His age was 69 years, 9 months, and 11 days.
It is a big thing to have lived this life aright; to have met the obligations of manhood squarely, and to have borne its responsibilities in an honorable way. Many and trying are petty aggravations. Heavy and grievous to be borne is the cross. “Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
