Settlers XLVIII: The Descendants of John VOUGH & Hannah Winder

By Lyle Rockwell
Athens, PA

Editor's Note: We are grateful to Lyle Rockwell for this informative hisotry of the Vough family and their relatives. In addition, we have provided links to genealogical history and photographs of members of the Higley family with which the Voughs married. You can find an overview of this family at Descendants of Miles Porter Higley by Angela Paris, and there is additional information on this page.

First Generation

1.     John VOUGH was born 7 Apr 1801 in  LYCOMING CO., PA. He died 4 Nov 1834.

John and Hannah lived in Lycoming Co., Pa. before coming to Sullivan Co. Their daughter Eliza was born in Montoursville, Pa. The birth and death dates of John, Hannah, and their children came from a personal record kept on a yellow parched paper that was probably kept by Eliza Vough Grange. It also included Geoffrey Clarke's birth, marriage, and births of their children.
Editor's Note: Geoffrey and Hannah, who died in 1882, are both buried under the Clarke surname at the Warburton Hill Cemetery in Forks Township, PA. Eliza Vough Grange, who married John Grange in 1851, was the grandmother of the famous athlete, Harold "Red" Grange.

John married HANNAH WINDER on 14 Dec 1823. HANNAH was born 8 Apr 1801.

John Vough died, so his wife married Geoffrey Clarke. Geoffrey was a native of Chester, England, who located in Forks Township, Sullivan County, Pa.

This information is from the History of Sullivan County, Pa., by George Streby.

Source: Barbara Ziek states that a "tidbit" scribbled on a piece of paper said that Hannah had long, straight black hair and claimed Indian blood.  Eliza's obituary said she had two great grandfathers who fought in the Revolutionary War, John Winders and David Hamilton. The Pennsylvania Winders I've read about were Quakers and I can't find a John Winder who fits the time period that would make sense.

6.     ELIZA VOUGH (John) was born 13 Oct 1833 in Mountoursville, PA. She died 5 Jun 1910 in Wheaton, Ill..

Eliza wrote a letter (a copy is in the hands of Victor Vough of Athens, PA.) to Ernest & Annie (Norton) Vough of Forks Twp., Sullivan Co., PA (Dushore R.F.D. No. 3) on Aug. 20, 1906 from Wheaton, ILL, as follows:

Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Vough - Dear loved ones all: I rec. your good loving letter, & will try to ans. it now, but it is so hot, I can hardly write letters. First of all, I must thank you for the little remembrance enclosed in your letter from my girlhood home. I prize all those little loving keepsakes, more than anyone knows. We are enjoying Tom & Della & boys visits so much. Tom & Merton went to work the next day after they got here. They say the longer they stay, the better they like it, & they seemed pleased with the place when they first came out here. It was hard trip for Della, for riding made her sick, but she is getting rested & feels better now.

Well you certainly was lovingly remembered on your anniversary of your wedding day. Yes, I should have enjoyed the day there very much indeed. I wrote to Retta & Vesta, but I didn't know whether I said anything about where they should send the money, but expected they would send it to you folks. I have not written to Lottie, as it has been such a busy time with us all summer.

I could not keep up with my letter writing, but will do the best I can. I wrote quite often to Alice as long as she could write & have to Walter & Rush since her death. We got a letter from Walter on the ninth of July. He said Alice had grown so much worse, she was liable to drop off any time, so Bertha started the next morning, & was there four weeks. Alice died on the last Sun. she was there, & was buried at Seaford on Mon. afternoon, & Bertha started home the next day, very sad & hard to leave Walter & Rush alone. Our folks are anxious to have them come out here & stay with us. Rush could go right on with his schooling, & Walter could do well at carpenter work, but he did not know what he could do about his property there yet, & his crops must be cared for.

I do feel so sad & sorry for them. I thought so much of Alice, but we all have to go one after another, but there are no good-byes in Heaven.

I had a letter from Rosa last week. She said her side still pained her at times. I hope she will get over it & be well. Arthur seems to feel contented, in his nice little home. He eats at restaurant, sleeps at home, but is working away all day. He & Ernest are working together at carpenter work. After Bertha went to Del., then Mabel took two weeks vacation in Mich., crossed the lake both ways. She is home again, & Helen is in Minn. visiting her parents as her mother is very poorly. So there was a few days I was the only woman here out of the five Granny women. Luther was overcome with the heat before Bertha got home, and was very sick, vomited blood, had the Dr. and nurse, but is gaining right along now. We expect to move out of this big house next week into a cozy one but smaller. Luther may build this fall or not till next summer, it will make but little difference, but we will be some further from all the rest, where we are going to move now.

So Ira Vough is married! I wish them much happiness, & all the other relatives out in Penn. I should be glad to see them all again, but as long as our friends think enough of us to come out & visit us, I shall feel contented to wait. But there has been many of my old acquaintances died since I came away. Well good-bye, give my love to Aunt Ann & all the other dear ones, & write often.

Your loving aunt,

 Eliza V. Grange.

Hello There - I am trying to trace the families of John W. GRANGE and his wife, Eliza VOUGH. John was born July 24, 1823 in PA, died August 13, 1896 in Sullivan County, PA. Eliza was born in 1833 in Montoursville, PA and died June 5, 1910 in Wheaton, Illinois. Their children were Wallace Sumner (my gg grandfather), Walter, Bertha, Lyle, Arthur, Luther, Hinton, Dilie, Ernest and perhaps one more. Eliza's parents were John VOUGH and Hannah WINDER. I don't know their parents, but Eliza's obituary states that two of Hannah's great grandfathers fought in the Revolutionary War: David HAMILTON who belonged to "Rangers on the Frontiers" 1778 to 1783, and John WINDER(S) who belonged to the German Regiment and died in the war. John is supposed to have had a son, Warren WINDER, who at age 15 also fought in the war and suffered a head wound. The obituary states that WARREN was another of Hannah's family names. Eliza VOUGH had the following siblings: Abram, Warren and David (who apparently died in Forks Township, (Sullivan County). Eliza's father, John Vough, died when she was little, and Hannah remarried to Geoffrey CLARK. They had at least two children: James Atherton CLARK and Mary CLARK. Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone?

(John W. Grange's obituary said of him, "He possessed indomitable will: after his mind was settled he was not easily moved". His picture echoed that description.)

They had the following children:

              14    F           i.    Martha Marvilla GRANGE was born 22 Nov 1852.

15    F          ii.    Almira JANE GRANGE was born 24 Feb 1854.

+            16    F         iii.    Myrta Vertillah GRANGE was born 10 Sep 1855.

17    M       iv.    WALLACE Sumner GRANGE was born 7 Apr 1857.

EVELYN married DONALD RALPH HIGLEY on January 25, 1948 in Towanda, PA. He was born April 02, 1921 in Forksvill, PA, the son of Ralph Williard Higley and Lelah B. McCarty. Ralph died July 19, 1971 in Forksville. You can learn more about this family at Descendants of Ralph Williard Higley, authored by Angela Paris. As Larry Pardoe commented at the time Angela provided us with this information:

Angela's grandparents Donald Ralph Higley and Evelyn Fay Vough connect to a treasure of Sullivan County root family names such as Higley, Vough, McCarty, Treaster, Mullan/Mullen, Warburton, Norton, Robinson, Fawcett, Christman, Biddle, Hoagland, Bird, Green, Molyneux, Barnes, Grange, King, Sadler, Plotts and quite possibly many more that I have overlooked. There are also many other family connections due to siblings of the above ancestor families via marriages into such families as: Pardoe, Caseman, Dieffenbach, Richart, Woodhead, Brown, Weisbrod, Rohe, Hunsinger, Brenchley, Yaw, Hottenstein, Little, Rinebold, Rumsey and probably many, many more. Here we have a prime example of how closely intertwined were the lives and futures of our ancestors in north central Pennsylvania. Here is a picture of the family of Donald and Evelyn Higley:

Editor's Note: In February 2005, Jennifer Kunkle-Clark, a descendant of the Rinebold and Vough families sent us this message:

I ran across FOR THE RECORD: EARLY SETTLERS OF LYCOMING COUNTY online while doing some work on my family genealogy. This source was very helpful in my search to fill in a few more dates.

Ruth Bird (who married George Rinebold) was my great, great grandmother. Their daughter Adaline B. Rinebold married Elmer Vough (my great grandparents). Elmer and Adeline B.'s son, George Vough, was my grandfather (he passed away a few years ago....in any case..here goes my line:

Powell & Lydia (Hannert) Bird...........................My great, great, great, great, great grandparents
George & Sally (King) Bird..................................My great, great, great, great grandparents
Charles & Harriet (Molyneux) Bird.....................My great, great, great grandparents
George & Ruth (Bird) Rinebold..........................My great, great grandparents
Elmer & Adeline B. (Rinebold) Vough...............My great grandparents
George Washington & Annabelle (Beeman) Vough...........my grandparents
Roger Lewis &Christine (Vough) Kunkle.........my parents
Andrew & Jennifer Kunkle-Clark (I'm Jennifer by the way)

I grew up just over the border in Bradford county (New Albany). My grandparents George and Annabelle were born, raised and married in Sullivan County where they had a farm (the "Old Vough Farm"). Their first child Emogene (my mother Chris's only sibling) was born and lived on the farm until the family moved to New Albany. My parents still live in New Albany...guess they didn't get too far away, eh...In any case, thanks for your useful information. I've been adding to the details of the genealogies that my mother gave to me as a Christmas gift one year. I plan to print it all up and present her with the new and inproved version as a gift. Anyway...I could ramble on forever, but just wanted you to know that I appreciate the hard work you put in.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Kunkle-Clark
