Editor's Note: Angela Paris has focused here on the branch of her Higley famly that lived in Bradford and Sullivan Counties, Pennsylvania in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the end of this page, you will also find an Appendix, prepared by Angela, which lists the Higley family members running back to and before Miles Porter Higley. In additon, she has contributed several photos of individuals and grave markers for individuals, all Higley family members, and all buried at Fairmount Cemetery in Forksville, PA. These photos are linked to the names of these Higley ancestors where they appear in the Appendix.
There is voluminous information on the Higley family from other sources. For example, The Higleys and Their Ancestry: An Old Colonial Family (1896, New York: D. Appleton and Company) is a 738 page compendium of the Higleys from time immemorial. Now out of print, the book is in the public domain. Both Bob Sweeney, the adminstrator of this site, and the Sullivan County Historical Society in Laporte, PA, have copies of this document. Sidney Rolland Higley, a second cousin, once removed to Angela Paris, has also written a history entitled: Descendants of Wilbert John Higley. His father was Sidney Rolland Higley, Sr. His grandfather was Emerson Larue Higley (1873-1922). Emerson was brother to Miles Porter Higley (1865-1955), and both were children of Wilbert John Higley (1838-1915). According to Larry Pardoe, "Sid", sent Larry a copy of his book about 2005. Some of the information came from a family tree started sometime after the 1949 Higley family reunion. The rest came from a book owned by his mother via her Aunt Norma Edwards in turn obtained from Pearl Finkle. Higley books from Grover Higley, in fact based on the Coffin tome, and personal information from Ralph Williard Higley himself, provided the rest of Sidney's genealogy. Wilbert John Higley by Sidney Higley: "Ralph lived and worked a farm for
most of his life. When the children were old enough they and his wife did most
of the farming while he worked on the State roads, where he helped build many
of the hard roads in the county. Later, he was foreman on the Township road
department, where he worked for fourteen years. At that time bought a large
farm, to add to the two smaller ones he owned, quit the road department and
farmed until his retirement. He resided in Estella, Pennsylvania up until his
death."

encyclopedia of info on the Higleys in the Forksville area and I filled in a
lot of the history of the Higleys in New Jersey."
February 25, 2009 Ralph, as remembered by Sidney Higley in
an email to his great-granddaughter Angela Marit Higley Paris: "Ralph was
about my size, 5'6"-5'7" tall and had a slight build, same as me and
a lot of the other Higleys. [At the reunion in 1983] . Everyone loved him and
waited on him hand and foot. All the small children would sit on his lap and
talk to him. Ralph had a photo album and he liked to collect pictures of as
much of the family as he could. I think the best thing I remember about him,
we had finished our meal, sat around talking for awhile, then went to bed.
Before we went to sleep we could Ralph in the other room saying his prayer
" Now I lay me down to sleep", we both thought that was the neatest
thing. He was a little deaf, so I guess he had to say it loud enough so he
could hear himself."
OBITUARY RALPH W. HIGLEY, 89 of Elkland Township, Forksville RD 1 died Sunday afternoon (1987) at Memorial Hospital in Towanda following a lingering illness. He was born Aug. 26, 1898 in Elkland Township, son of the later Porter and Louella Mullen Higley and was a life-time
resident of Elkland Township until his retirement. For many years he had been
a dairy farmer and for 14 years also was a road foreman for Elkland Township. He and his late wife celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in October
1975. His wife, the late Lelah B. McCarty died Nov. 5, 1975. A son, Donald
predeceased him by 17 years. He was for many years a member of the Sullivan
County Fair Association. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Stephenson
of Towanda, Mrs. Emery (Arlene) Brown of East Troy and Mrs. John (Helen) Brown
of Forksville RD 1; seven sons, Kenneth Higley of New Albany RD 1, Bruce Higley
of Kenmore, N.Y., Floyd Higley of Montoursville, Dale Higley of Upland, Calif.,
Clinton Higley of Hillsgrove, Myron Higley of Crestview, Fla., Gordon Higley of
Phoenix, Ariz., 53 grandchildren and 78 great-grandchildren. The funeral
service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral
Home, 119Carpenter St., Dushore with the Rev. Robert Martin, pastor of St.
Peter’s United Church of Christ, Hugo Corners, Sullivan County officiating.
Interment will be in Forksville Cemetery. Friends may call at McHenry’s in
Dushore Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. -Towanda Daily Review

RD 1, died November 4, 1975, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry
Stephenson, Towanda. She was born July 2, 1902 in Forks Township, Sullivan County, daughter of the late Nelson and Adelia Warburton McCarty. She was a
lifetime resident of Sullivan County and on last Aug. 22, she and her husband
Ralph W. Higley, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. She had attended
St. Peter's Church of Christ at Hugo Corners. Surviving in addition to her
husband, Ralph, at home, are three daughters, Mrs. Harry (Evelyn) Stephenson of
Towanda, Mrs. Emery (Arlene) Brown of Troy and Mrs. John (Helen) Brown of
Forksville; seven sons, Kenneth of New Albany, Bruce of Buffalo, N.Y., Floyd of
Montoursville, Dale of Upland, Calif., Clinton of Forksville, Myron of Sunbury
and Gordon of Queens Creek, Ariz., one brother, Edward McCarty of Cogan
Station; 52 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. One son, Donald,
preceded her in death by four years. The funeral was held Nov. 8 at the Russell
P. McHenry Funeral Home, Dushore, with the Rev. LaRue Hess, pastor of the
Forksville United Methodist Charge, officiating. Burial was in Forksville Cemetery."

Dora and Warren Brown of Montoursville; three brothers and a sister-in-law,
Glenn Higley of Ocala, Fla., David and Donna Higley of Wyalusing and Clayton
Higley of Shunk; special friends, Dale and Daisy Bacorn of Barto, W.V.; 16
nieces and nephews; eight great-nieces and nephews and several aunts and
uncles. A private graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m.
in the (Brown) Shunk Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to call from 6
to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore. The family will provide the flowers and suggests that memorials
be made to the Shunk United Methodist Church or a charity of one’s choice in

Man charged in shooting death outside
of Overton tavern By: Erin Lemley 04/24/2004 NORTH TOWANDA - An argument
escalated into the shooting death of Christopher Dean Higley, 41, of New Albany, Thursday night in the parking lot of the Mountainhouse Inn, located along
state Route 3004, Hatch Hill Road, in Overton Township, according to state
police. Suspect Michael F. Harrigan, 39, of New Albany was apprehended Friday
at 9 a.m. at a private residence in Philadelphia, according to police. Harrigan
had fled the Mountainhouse Inn after allegedly shooting Higley in the parking
lot Thursday at 9:06 p.m., police said. The state police Fugitive Apprehension
Unit was tipped to Harrigan's whereabouts, Troop P public relations officer
Trooper Martin Connors said at a press conference outside the state police
barracks in North Towanda Friday afternoon. Troopers from Wyoming drove
Harrigan back to Towanda, Connors said. He described Higley and Harrigan as
"acquaintances at best." He also said the apprehension was
facilitated by Harrigan's family and friends. A witness to the argument at the
bar, Alan Gary Bailey of New Albany, guessed the two started arguing at 8 p.m.,
police said. Bailey arrived at the bar at 7:30 p.m. and sat on Higley's right,
police said. Harrigan was seated nearby on Higley's left, according to police.
Bailey heard Higley ask Harrigan to step outside and fight at 8:30 p.m., but
Harrigan did not go with him, police said. Bailey told police that Higley
returned 10 minutes later calling Harrigan a chicken for not going outside.
Bailey witnessed the two arguing until Harrigan said he was going to his truck
to leave at 9:06 p.m., police said. Higley got off a bar stool 10 seconds later
and told Bailey he was going outside to fight Harrigan, according to police. A
second witness, Richard Yencha of Wilkes-Barre, left the tavern after Higley
and heard arguing in the parking lot, police said. Yencha heard a gunshot and
told his girlfriend to get in their truck, police said. Yencha told police his
girlfriend saw someone kicking Higley's body. When Yencha saw a vehicle rush
out of the parking lot he walked up to Higley, saw he was dead and asked the
bartender to call 9-1-1, police said. The owner of the Mountainhouse Inn, Barry
Lee Young, was bartending Thursday night, police said. Young served Harrigan
six or seven Miller Lights and served about four Black Velvet and Ginger Ale
mixes to Higley, police said. Young told police the two were sitting near each
other at the bar, but he did not witness them arguing. Harrigan has been
charged with one count of criminal homicide, police said. He was arraigned
before District Justice Timothy Clark on Friday. Clark granted the request of
Harrigan's defense attorney, R. Bruce Manchester Esq. of Manchester &
Associates, Bellefonte, Pa., to delay Harrigan's preliminary hearing. A date

advanced to Field Manager. Her worked at this for several years, then learning
he had only a short time to live, quit his job and moved back to Forksville, Pennsylvania. He built a trailer park camp. He died a short time after the
park was completed."

Evelyn F. Higley April 18, 2002 Evelyn F. Higley, age
72, of Benton, PA, formerly of Forksville, passed away on Thursday, April 18,
2002 at the home of her son. She was born on Jan. 23, 1930 in Sayre, a daughter
of David and Edith Treaster Vough. In 1947, she graduated from Estella High School. Evelyn was a lifetime resident of the Sullivan County area. On Jan.
25, 1948, Evelyn married Donald Ralph Higley in Towanda. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Overton. Her other memberships included the Sullivan
County Chamber of Commerce where she was the first woman to serve; the
Loyalsock Watershed Association and the Pennsylvania Campground Association.
She enjoyed time spent doing crossword puzzles, watching birds and traveling.
Mr. and Mrs. Higley owned and operated Higley Campground for many years, and
she recently owned and operated a restaurant in Benton. On July 19, 1971, she
was preceded in death by her husband, Donald. She left surviving seven children
and their spouses: Linda R. and William R. Massengale of Utah, Jack and Karen
Higley of Raymond, ME, Dottie Ann and James Pardoe of Forksville, Ronald C. and
Linda L. Higley of Honeoye, NY, Philip W. Higley of Dushore, Michael D. Higley
of New Albany, Mitchell Dean and Penny Higley of Dushore; two brothers, Harvey
Vough of Dushore and Victor Vough of Athens; a stepmother, Francis Reed Vough
of Dushore; stepbrother, Robert Reed of Sayre; 21 grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents
and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Rohe of Overton
and a granddaughter, Toni Michelle Higley. Funeral services were held Monday,
April 22 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Overton with the
Rev. Robert W. Martin, her pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the Forksville Cemetery, Forksville. Friends and family called on Sunday evening, April 21 from
6 to 8 p.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore,
and on Monday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ from 10 a.m. until the time
of the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be
made to the Sullivan County Cancer Society or the Sullivan County Library. She
loved birds and nature.

illness. Born in Shunk, Pa. on June 22, 1924 he was the son of Charles and
Jennie (Hess) Brown. After completing the eighth grade, he worked on the family
farm and at various lumber mills
in the area. On May 5, 1951 he
married the former Arlene Higley. Together they celebrated 46 years of holy
matrimony. He continued his dual occupations of arming and working in the
lumber mills while raising seven children. Sonny worked for 20 years with L.L.
Baumunk in Shunk and 25 years with Cummings in Troy, retiring in 1990. The
following year he also retired from farming. Sonny was a man who enjoyed the
simple things in life, the great outdoors, hunting, his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren and his dogs, which followed him everywhere. Besides his
wife, Arlene, he is survived by sons; Earl and wife, Katie Brown of Troy, Pa.,
Randy Brown of St. Augustine, Fla., Dennis and wife, Angie Brown of Opelika,
Ala.; daughters, Connie Parks and close friend, George Taylor of Columbia Cross
Roads, Pa., Donna and her husband, Fred Wrisley of Lima, N.Y., Sandra and her
husband, Daniel Hager of Troy, Pa., Kathy Bailey of St. Augustine, Fla. and
Karen and husband, Doug Heller of Canton, Pa.; sisters, Ada and husband,

Rosalie graduated from the Loyalsock Area High School, Estella, PA a member of the class of 1960. Those who knew her know how much she enjoyed crocheting
and playing bingo. While raising her children she spent many years farming on

59 of RR 1, Forksville, Pa. passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997 at her home following
a lengthy illness. She was born on Jan. 4, 1938 a daughter of the late Ralph
and Lela McCarty Higley of Forksville. Helen was a member of St. Peter's United
Church of Christ at Hugo Corners and was its treasurer for many years. She had
previously worked at Dushore Lingerie and the Ben Franklin Store in Dushore.
She was employed at Dar-Way Nursing Home in Estella for over 10 years and was
an Elkland Township Auditor for a number of years. Left surviving is her
husband, John E. Brown at home; one son, Marvin Brown of Montgomery, Pa.; two
daughters, Mrs. Roy (Lynne) Bennett of Forksville, Mrs. Charles (Terrie)
Baumunk Jr. of Forksville; five grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Stephenson
of Towanda, Arlene Brown of Troy; six brothers, Kenneth Higley of Wyalusing,
Floyd Higley of Montoursville, Pa., Dale Higley of Upland, Calif., Clinton
Higley of Laceyville, Myron Higley of Sunbury, Pa. and Gordon Higley of Las
Vegas, Nev. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Donald
Higley and Bruce Higley. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 24, 1997
