NOTE by Jeff Stewart: William and Martha are my great grand parents and I have the funeral books of William and Martha. William was called Abner according to Mabel Lois (nee Shaner) Stewart, my mother. Martha was Grandma Hoff and she was a kind person but had a look that would keep any child in line. My younger brother recalled having the same experience. She married Preston Shaner and they lived on Meade Street in Williamsport, Lycoming County, PA. I recall visiting them and how Preston had a chicken coup and made wine. Grandma Hoff had a box camera and I remember being allowed to handle it, and of course there was no film in it. Grandma Hoff had no arthritis, and took various home remedies daily. I wish now I knew what those remedies were.

William Abner and Martha had the following children:

M            I. Miles F. Hoff

F              ii. Blanche E. Hoff

                F              iii. Beatrice Elizabeth Hoff

                M            iv. Albert William Hoff

                M            v. Robert S. Hoff

Miles F. Hoff was born 28 Jun 1897, in PA, died 11 May 1898 in PA, and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Montgomery, Lycoming County, PA.

Blanche E. Hoff was born Oct 1898 (1900 Milton Ward 2, district 131, Northumberland County, PA, census), and died in 1971 at the Williamsport Hospital, Williamsport, Lycoming County, PA. She died before Martha Hoff, so date of death is before 20 Jul 1971. Mabel Lois (nee Shaner) Stewart recalls Blanche being buried in the Green Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Montgomery, Lycoming County, PA.

Blanche married Samuel Jacob Weller, son of Jacob and Sarah (nee unknown) Weller, about 1920 in PA.

Samuel was born 2 Sep 1896 in Exchange, Montour County, PA and died Jun 1972. He is probably buried with Blanche in the Green Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Montgomery, Lycoming County, PA.

NOTE by Jeff Stewart: He was Uncle Sam and she was Aunt Blanche. They lived on Kinsey Street in Montgomery, Lycoming County, PA and has cats that would hiss. Sam was Mayor of Montgomery and he was very depressed when Blanche died. He may have died at home in Montgomery. I recall leaving during the flood of 1972 for California for my first job after college and wondering how Uncle Sam would be buried.

Beatrice Elizabeth Hoff was born 11 May 1900 in Milton, Northumberland County, PA, died 19 May 1980 at Muncy Valley Hospital, Muncy, Lycoming County, PA, and was buried 22 May 1980 in Fairview Cemetery, Montgomery, Lycoming County, PA.

Beatrice married Henry Lee Shaner, son of Elmer Lewis Shaner and Nella Jeanette Ball, on 17 Nov 1918 in Northumberland County. Henry was born 23 Sept 1896 in Pennsdale, Lycoming County, PA and died 19 Oct 1967 at Muncy Valley Hospital, Muncy, Lycoming County, PA, and was buried 23 Oct 1967 in Fairview Cemetery, Montgomery, Lycoming County, PA.

NOTE by Jeff Stewart: Beatrice and Henry were my grand parents and live most of there life at 85 Wagner Avenue, Montgomery, Lycoming County, PA. My grandmother told be she worked in a shoe factory for seven cents per hour and my grandfather showed me how to use a micrometer and spin a button with string. Grandfather had a magnet that was created when lightning struck while he was at work. He told me he was checking around the plant with a metal ruler when this magnet attached to the ruler and scared him.

Henry Lee and Beatrice Shaner had the following children:

M            I. Alem Earl Shaner

F              ii. Mabel Lois Shaner

                M            iii. Lewis William Shaner

Mabel Lois Shaner was born 26 May 1921 in Montgomery, Lycoming County, PA and is still living.

She married Fred Shaffer Stewart, son of Homer Edward Stewart and Emma Elizabeth Shaffer, on 11 Jan 1946 by Rev. Adam P. Bingman at the Brick Church in Montgomery, Lycoming County, PA, presently still there and active on Route 405 and Brick Church road as St. John’s Lutheran Church.
