ORUM - Julia A., daughter of Charles L. and Keturah Orum, was born
October 28, 1843, and died
January
6, 1904. At the time of her birth her parents were members of Union
Methodist Episcopal Church, Fourth and Arch Streets,
Philadelphia. From 1854 to 1861 they were members of
Haines Street,
Germantown, where Julia was converted, and of which church she was for
many years a member. She graduated from the Girls' Normal School,
Philadelphia, at the head of her class, in 1864. She taught a number of
years in the Philadelphia public schools. She commenced teaching
elocution in 1875 to private classes. She established the Philadelphia
School of Elocution in 1885. In 1890 she had charge of the Department of
Voice Training in the Mountain Lake Park Chautauqua Summer School. She
was also teacher of voice training in the Woman's College, Baltimore,
Md., which position she gave up because it interfered with her home
classes. For years she was the instructor of voice training at the Young
Men's Christian Association of Germantown. She studied under the veteran
tragedian, James B. ROBERTS, for a number of years. She was an
intelligent and consistent Christian, and used her profession as an
elocutionist in imparting instruction to clergymen, because she believed
that in so doing she was giving practical aid and equipment for the
better prosecution of their work. Many young preachers, especially in
the Philadelphia and New Jersey Conferences of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, availed themselves of her services, which were practically
gratuitous. She was the author of many newspaper and magazine articles.
Her book, "The Orum System of Voice Education," was published in 1893.
It was a valuable contribution to the literature on that subject. Her
health failed about three years ago, and her life, though abruptly
terminated, was nevertheless a well-rounded out and successful literary
and religious career. John D. FOX.
