HANLON, Thomas D.former executive director of the Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau, died Monday in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 69.Hanlon served as head of the bureau from 1970 to 1986 and, in the ?70s, Hanlon created a highly successful advertising campaign that he labeled "P.S. I Love You" -- tying the endeavor to the title of a hit single recorded by the Beatles. Hanlon came to the Palm Springs bureau in 1967 to fill the position of director of advertising, publicity and promotion. He was elevated to executive director three years later. Hanlon worked for the Clark County Fair and Recreation Board, a marketing agency for visitors to Las Vegas. In an interview with The Desert Sun in 1985, Hanlon described tourism as a commodity, adding that "selling Palm Springs is not unlike selling a can of peas." "It?s an analytical approach," he said at the time. "You define the product, identify who wants it, then figure out how to reach the buyers. "And, with Hanlon in the driver's seat, the bureau successfully utilized an annual budget of $1.6 million and steered a marketing strategy that centered on advertising, promotion, public relations and direct sales. A native of Philadelphia, Hanlon served in the Army with the 508th Airborne Forces and also was a Hearst Fellow graduate of the Maryland School of Journalism. He also one of the first tourism industry executives to receive a master's degree in Tourism Development and Administration from George Washington University. Hanlon is survived by his wife, Aura Nell; four daughters, Tenley, Megan Akright, Kara Arnold and Erin; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be private, with Wiefels and Son Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the Northeast Catholic Boys? High School in Philadelphia.

EX-JUDGE HARE DEAD AT RADNOR
Former Philadelphia Jurist and Notable Figure in Founding Union League. RADNOR, Pa., Dec. 29.-Former Judge J. I. Clark Hare died at his country home, Harford, here this afternoon, at 2:45 o'clock. The end came unexpectedly, despite the fact that Judge Hare had been in ill health for several years. He was seized with a chill and a few hours later expire. Judge Hare served for many years as President Judge of Common Pleas Court No. 2, of Philadelphia, and he was a notable figure in forming the Union League. Retiring from the bench in 1896, after forty-five years of continuous service, Judge Hare spent much of his time at his country home. He had just entered his ninetieth year.

Decease of a Methodist Divine.
Rev. S. G. Hare, a member of the Philadelphia M. E. Conference, died at an early hour yesterday, at the residence of Ruel Speakman, Esq., in this city. He had been unwell for about a week, but attended church on Sunday night. Deceased entered the conference in 1843, and at the time of his death was in the second year of the pastorate of Safe Harbor Church, in Lancaster county. He was an able and an estimable man, and leaves a wife and five children. This is the second death that has occurred among the members of the conference during the present session.
