My LETHERT ancestors settled for a few years in Danville (1862-1867?), most moved to Wisconsin and then Minnesota, but Mary LETHERT ANKLIN remained in Danville with husband Joseph ANKLIN and children. One son must have died young (Henry) and one became a priest (Johann - Fr. Agatho). One daughter, Agnes, married a Thomas BURKE and the other, Gertrud married Fred SUHR. I know the BURKES remained in Danville and had several children there - Joseph (b. 1896), John (b. 1898), Thomas V. (b. 1900) and Marion (b. 1903). Seeking information, especially the gravesite of Amos SUPPINGER (possible spelling: ZUPPINGER) of Danville. He was a private in the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry, company H, (90 day volunteers), and was killed in action at the Battle of Falling Waters, (now West Virginia) July 2, 1861. His body was probably returned to Montour County. The local newspapers might have told of the battle, casualties, and possible burial arrangements. Do newspapers of the period exist? Note references to him in Brower's history, pages 92 & 115. Any information on this soldier would be appreciated.

NAME:Robert E. Oberdorf
SURNAME: Oberdorf

My great-great grandfather was a farmer in the Danville, PA area, possibly around the 1850's-60's. Probably born in area, early 1800's. Moved to Waverly, IA, 1861 or earlier. Five sons - Lewis Cass; Alexander; James Bucannan; William Henry; my great-grandfather, John Peter; and five daughters- Alice; Rosa; Jennie; Laurie; Minerva. Wife Massa DAWSON. Family said her father, James Andrew and mother, Sarah, were of English descent.

Maybe when Phillip OBERDORF went west, some of the children were old enough to be left behind? Phillip probably left bros/sis behind. My great-grandfather, John Peter was born in Waverly, IA, around 1861. I have absolutely no idea at this point of birthdates of the other children.

I have this crazy theory that most OBERDORF's are related. I think there are fewer than 100 OBERDORF families in the US. How about Germany? Good luck! I've been there three times and cruise the internet often. No OBERDORF's.

BTW, OBERDORF, simple name, huh? Absolutely. Upper village, higher up on the mountain? Maybe. In German if you have a flatland village and one part of the village happens to be two inches higher than the rest of the village it is the "oberdorf". Extremely common geographical expression. Very rare family name. Check it out.
