NAME:Robert E. Oberdorf
SURNAME: Oberdorf
My great-great grandfather was a farmer in the Danville, PA area, possibly around the 1850's-60's. Probably born in area, early 1800's. Moved to Waverly, IA, 1861 or earlier. Five sons - Lewis Cass; Alexander; James Bucannan; William Henry; my great-grandfather, John Peter; and five daughters- Alice; Rosa; Jennie; Laurie; Minerva. Wife Massa DAWSON. Family said her father, James Andrew and mother, Sarah, were of English descent.
Maybe when Phillip OBERDORF went west, some of the children were old enough to be left behind? Phillip probably left bros/sis behind. My great-grandfather, John Peter was born in Waverly, IA, around 1861. I have absolutely no idea at this point of birthdates of the other children.
I have this crazy theory that most OBERDORF's are related. I think there are fewer than 100 OBERDORF families in the US. How about Germany? Good luck! I've been there three times and cruise the internet often. No OBERDORF's.
BTW, OBERDORF, simple name, huh? Absolutely. Upper village, higher up on the mountain? Maybe. In German if you have a flatland village and one part of the village happens to be two inches higher than the rest of the village it is the "oberdorf". Extremely common geographical expression. Very rare family name. Check it out.
