The third death of the day was that of the five-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Wolfe, after a several weeks’ illness. The little one was laid to rest in Sugar Grove Cemetery this morning at 11 o’clock.

In but a few families has death laid a heavier hand in so short a time than that of the Potter family. Within this past five months the Grim Reaper has twice visited this home. In June of this years, diphtheria, which was ravaging this section, laid hold of this household and claimed as victims Sanford, the eldest son, and Thelma, the four-year-old- daughter. And now once more Grim Death comes and this time takes away the head of the household, completing the trio of deaths within five months. Mr. Potter has for years been one of our most prominent citizens and leaves besides a widow and children, sisters and brothers, a host of friends to mourn his death. He was for years a member of the M. E. Church and was one of the foremost in the ranks of church work.

Harry Ellsworth SCHENCK ( -1919)
While returning to his East Green street home last night, Harry Ellsworth Schenck, 38 years old, cashier at the Colonial National bank, died suddenly opposite the Y.M.C.A. building on South Pittsburg street. His lifeless body was found on the pavement about 10:10 o'clock by John I. Denvir, an employee of the Yough Ice and Storage company. While lifting the body from the pavement, E. J. Enos and Torrance S. Barner came along and assisted him in carrying it into the parlors of the Y.M.C.A., where efforts were made to restore life by means of artificial respiration but without avail. Dr. J.F. Kerr, who was summoned at once, on arrival pronounced life extinct. Mr. Schenck’s death was believed to be instantaneous as another physician who passed the Y.M.C.A. about 10:05 did not see him. The cause of death is not known. The family physician states that Mr. Schenck had a perfect heart, and there were no marks on his body to indicate that his death was caused by a hard fall on the pavement. Coroner S.H. Baum of Uniontown was notified. The deceased had always enjoyed the best of health. After eating a hearty dinner last evening, he chatted with his family for about half an hour before leaving for the bank. At 9:10 o'clock he talked with Mrs. Schenck over the telephone and concluded the conversation by stating that he would be home in about half an hour. He had planned to accompany Mrs. Schenck to Pittsburg today. Mr. Schenck's sudden death not only came as a great shock to members of his family, but to the entire community. He had resided in Connellsville all his life and was prominent in business and social circles. The body was removed to Funeral Director Charles C. Mitchell's parlors and today was taken to the family residence. The funeral, the time to be announced later, will be in charge of the Masons. Harry Ellsworth, eldest son of Winield Scott and Sarah Jane Schenck, was born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, March 9, 1881. He was educated in the public schools, continuing his studies until 1898, when he entered the employ of the First National Bank of Connellsville, remaining with that institution five years. In 1903 he was appointed cashier of the Turtle Creek National Bank, at Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania. After 18 months with that bank he returned to Connellsville to become cashier of the newly organized Colonial National Bank, beginning business November 1, 1904, with L. F. Ruth, president, R. Marietta, vice-president, Harry E. Schenck, cashier. The bank has had a very successful career, and is well established as one of the stable financial institutions of Connellsville. He was a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Christian church and of several social and beneficial orders. He married, June 1, 1904, Leona P. daughter of Matthew and Susan Crowley of Connellsville. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Robert Crowley Schenck, born May 23, 1905, and Harry Winfield Schenck, born February 7, 1910. His mother and a brother, Walter P. Schenck and sister, Mrs. Charles D. Bailey, also survive.

In failing health for many months Mrs. Schenck's death was not unexpected. Members

Maggie Bell SCOTT died in 1904. Her obit was contributed to the Fayette
County USGenWeb Project.(34)
SCOTT, MAGGIE A (BELL) - August 22, 1864 - March 9, 1904
Mrs. Maggie Bell Scott, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. John R. Bell, and wife of
Worthy K. Scott, was born August 23, 1864, near Jefferson, Pa., and died March
9, 1904. at Broad Ford, Pa., aged thirty nine years, six months and fifteen days.
She made a profession of religion in the spring of 1887, at the Cross Roads
school house, in a meeting held by Rev. Charles Tilton and was received into
the fellowship of the Baptist church at Jefferson a short time later. From
the time of her connection with the church, her first thought was to do her master's
will. She seemed to live out the expression, "They will be done."
She was married to W. K. Scott Sept. 8, 1887. When seized by her
last illness, she seemed to have a premonition that she would not recover, and
in keeping with that thought she gave minute directions in regard to what she
wished done with her remains after the spirit should take its flight to her Master.
Later in her illness she expressed a desire to live for the comfort of
her parents, saying that it would be so hard for them to give her up. Often
during her husband's watch with her during her illness she would recall the pleasure
she derived from her visits home and how pleased her father and mother were to
have her with them. To the great consolation of her husband and friends,
she retained her faculties and reason to the very last. A short time before
she died, realizing that she would not recover, she spoke to her husband saying,
"I hate to leave you, too." He asked her if she was afraid to
die. She said, "O no; I am happy, but I am so young to die."
In a short time she said, "I am going home." When asked to which
home, she said, "To my heavenly home." Besides the grief-stricken
husband, she leaves her father and mother and one brother, Henry Bell, of Jefferson,
to mourn her departure. The body was brought to her father's home March
11 where family services were held by Rev. G. J. Meredith. The funeral
proper was held at the home of her father-in-law, William P. Scott, March 12,
the services being conducted by Rev. J. E. Darby, D. D. assisted by Rev. Mr.
Carr and Rev. J. C. McMinn, after which the body was laid to rest in Muddy Creek
cemetery. The grief-stricken families have the sympathy of a large circle
of friends.

(Standard Sep 10)
Death has claimed another victim, and COL. WILLIAM SEARIGHT is “gathered to his fathers.” He died at his residence in Menallen township, on the morning of the 12th Inst., at seven o’clock. His disease was Chronic Diarrhea, which confined him to his bed about six weeks. It is not the purpose of this communication to pronounce a eulogy upon the deceased, but merely to record his death and to notice some of the prominent characteristics of this valuable citizen. A more emphatic, comprehensive and gratifying eulogy than is in the power of language to express, was bestowed upon him on the day of his funeral; not by any oration of studied well arranged words – of selected phrases, and sentences of rhetoric, but by the assembling around his corpse to perform the last sad duty of friendship, twice or perhaps thrice a greater number of citizens than ever attended the funeral ceremonies of any one who has died within the limits of Fayette County. Among the vast number, who by a common and generous sentiment assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to their departed friend, were to be seen an unusual number of our most venerable citizens. The Patriarchs of the county gathered there to bear their worthy testimony to the worth of one who, more than thirty years before, had appeared among them a friendless, unprotected youth, without a dollar in his pocket, without influence of family, or family friends, with nothing but his manly virtues, his unflinching energy and high sense of honor to commend him to their confidence and regard. – They saw him thus, a stranger, without capital or friends, by his own unaided exertions, rise to cutincuce in wealth, to distinction as a citizen; and by the practice of his sterling virtues, guided at all times the generous impulses of a noble heart, surrounded himself by a multitude of devoted and attached friends, limited in number only by the geographical boundaries of his own great State. They came with sad hearts to see the “last end” of such a man. The youth of the country were also there to catch an inspiring impulse as they sided in laying in the silent tomb one who, from their midst had carved for himself so bright a fortune, had attained so fair a fame, such commanding influence and so high a character. It would be reckless boldness indeed, in one who witnessed this voluntary offering of sincere and heart-felt respect, by so great a concourse of the most worthy and honorable citizens of the country, as they bore their solemn and impressive testimony to the worth and high character of the deceased, to hope to ald, by way of written paragraphs, anything to its imposing and convincing weight. It was the sorrowing hearts of the people, and not an empty pageant that followed the remains of William Searight to his last resting place. Mr. Searight was born on the 5th day of December, A. D. 1792, in Cumberland county, near Carlisle. His parents were highly respectable, but enjoyed but little of this world’s goods. He received a plain English education at their hands, with the precepts of stern integrity and honor impressed upon his youthful heart, which were the elements of his future success in business and elevated character. In the neighborhood in which he was raised, he learned the trade of a Fuller and Dyer; with a knowledge of which, his honor, his integrity and his native energy of character, as his entire stock, with which to commence and push his own fortune, he arrived in Fayette county when but little over twenty-one years of age. He commenced his business in this county, first at an old Fulling Mill on Dunlap’s Creek, owned at the time by Mr. Hammond. He afterwards prosecuted his vocation at Cook’s Mill, on Redstone, and again near Perryopolis. A few years of active industry laid the foundation of the large fortune he subsequently acquired, and the strict integrity which marked his business transactions, united to a general and benevolent heart, gave him the high place he enjoyed in the estimation and affection of the community in which he lived. The soundness of his judgment and his strong practical sense soon impressed themselves upon his own county, and he become one of her most influential citizens; but Fayette county although the first, was but little in advance of either communities to learn and admire his worth and excellence. – His character and reputation became known and appreciated throughout the State, and at the time of his death he was the Candidate of the Democratic party for one of the most dignified, responsible and important offices of the State within the gift of the people – the office of Canal Commissioner. Such is very briefly the history and character of the subject of this notice. He was a man of the highest sense of honor, generous and humane in all the impulses of his heart; he was ever ready to lend his counsel, his sympathies and his purse to the aid of his friends; strongly attached to his political party, and a strong party man, yet he always treated his opponents with respectful courtesy, and never rudely assailed them. He was an affectionate husband, a kind and watchful parent. To his family his loss is irreparable. Over this bereavement, they will mourn as none others can, but they do not mourn as those who mourn with hope. The brightest point in his character shown out at the last. So far as human judgement can go, he died a Christian. Though the stirring events of a busy life had diverted his attention too long from this all important subject, yet when laid upon a bed of sickness his anxious and absorbing care was, to be prepared to meet death with the hope of the “righteous man.” This he was happily enabled to accomplish and he died in peace; and although death plucked him from the very threshold of earthly honor and distinction, yet it caused him no regrets. The scenes upon which he was about to enter, presented higher honors, purer enjoyments. To him they presented
SEARING— Of Consumption on the 29th of March, near Uniontown, Pa., Miss Minerva Searing, aged 21 years 3 months and 6 days. How sad that the young – the bright and promising should be cut down by death – as a beautiful, yet tender blushing flower, is withered by the breath of autumn. Minerva joined the Methodist Protestant church in 1859 but neglected Christian duty, which neglect caused her much sorrow in her illness; yet she found the Savior rich in grace and abundant in mercy, and could rejoice in prospect of her approaching change and promised rest. – Hence in her dying hours she requested her friends to sing, “Weep not for me when I am gone,” and “There is rest for the weary.” May God sanctify this bereavement to the good of the family and “so teach us all to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” B.

Death, that thirteen years ago stalked in Hill Farm mine and claimed the lives of 31 men, came in a flash of fire to the Ferguson slope, near Dunbar, on Saturday evening at 6:30 o’clock, and smote down the 21 miners who were working there. Ten lives were snuffed out by the explosion and the deadly after-damp that followed, and the grim destroyer has probably not yet finished his gruesome tally. Two victims have since died at the Cottage State Hospital and others are lingering between life and death. One man is missing and there is now no hope of his being alive. The Ferguson disaster comes as a sad memento to the Hill Farm horror of 13 years ago, for the statements of the mine experts show that the shouldering Hill Farm fire probably fired a body of gas in the old working at Ferguson. These are the dead, missing and injured.
The explosion occurred 10 minutes after the night shift had gone into the slope on Saturday evening. Because the mine is almost worked out only 21 men were employed in it. The work was 1100 feet from the mouth of the slope. The men were working in the entries near the main heading drawing ribs and letting down the roof. In about six months the mine would have been closed up. The miners had gone to their accustomed places and were just beginning the labors of the night when with a rush and uproar the blue flame of death swept up the slope entries and enveloped them. Some were hurled along the passages and crushed against the side of the mine. Others not in the direct path of the flame were overcome by the deadly black damp which followed the explosion.
O’Toole, the engineer at the main house saw the smoke and dust roll out of the mouth of the slope and knew that an explosion had happened. He tied down his work whistle and its shrill wail carried the news of terror over the countryside. Then John McGurk staggered out shrieking for help. In a few minutes the mouth of the slope was crowded with miners and a rescue party hastily formed. Headed by Robert Nelson, brave miners went into the place of death and assisted the injured to the outside. The dead were brought out with them.
Morgue and hospital were combined for the time being in the little black smith shop outside the mine. Here Drs. McKinney, Colley and Warne of Dunbar were called and gave the survivors first aid. The burned men were swashed in oiled cloths, and prepared to be sent to the Cottage State Hospital here. Three of them, however, preferred to be taken to their homes. Among these was Fire Boss John McGurk, who is badly injured.
The Pittsburg, McKeesport & Connellsville railway supplied a special car to bring the injured to the hospital, and the car made a record run over the road. The entire staff of the hospital was summoned, and as soon as the seven injured arrived they were given the best attention that the medical profession can offer. Sunday afternoon, however, Rijack Beleslaf, a Polishman, died, and after midnight this morning William Foster breathed his last. More deaths are expected at the hospital almost any time.
Up at the improvised morgue, Undertaker J. M. Burhans of Dunbar assisted by D. C. Fortz, cleaned up the bodies, and prepared them for burial. One by one they were dressed and laid on slabs on the floor of the shop. Almost all this work was done Saturday night.
With the dawning of day, Sunday, crowds began to gather at the Ferguson mine. The idly curious mingled with the heart broken friends and relatives of the dead. Rapidly the work of identification went on. The names of the men who were first identified by their numbers were secured at the office of the Dunbar Furnace Company and the bodies labeled and numbered. All day long crowds thronged the scene of death. Canvas was hung up on the blacksmith shop windows to keep away the morbidly curious. Shortly before noon Sunday, Robert Nelson and a rescue party went in to search for the missing man, Michael Bene. Outside at the manway, a crown waited for tidings of him. When the rescue party came out in the evening however he had not been found. Something that looked like his coat had been found in one of the passages.
This morning a party in charge of James Conroy and James Palsley again entered the mine. They are making a thorough search and expect to bring the body of Bene out with them. The mine is not on fire and no further danger is anticipated for the present.
This morning, Dr. McKinney of Dunbar, reports the condition of John McGurk somewhat improved. He had bad burns but his physician hopes that he has not inhaled the fire and thinks he has considerable chance for life. The condition of the two foreigners who are at their homes are somewhat improved.
