of an overdose of medicine. The aged man had been in ill health for some time

indicated after an examination of the body. The gruesome find was made early
today by Howard Ashton, Pt. Marion bottling works manager, with whom the aged
glass-worker had been employed part time.

him today, finding his body in the small room in a shanty near Morgantown street,
where the aged man had made a home for some years.

Tragedy stalked a party of three boys, happy at play at the Reidmore home of State Fish Commissioner Kenneth A. Reid, near South Connellsville, Sunday afternoon at about 2:15 o’clock and two of them perished by drowning, one going to his death as he made a valiant effort to save his playmate from the watery grave.
The dead:
Harmon Kephart Augustine, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Clarence Augustine, and a grandson of former State Treasurer and Mrs. Harmon M. Kephart of 306 South Pittsburg street.
James Daniels, 13, son of Mrs. Leona Daniels and a grandson of the Mrs. J. Emmett Collins of 301 Grandview avenue. Reid “Sonny” Kephart, 11, son of Mrs. Gertrude Kephart, widow of John Kephart of Philadelphia, who has been staying at the Reid home, had a narrow escape from death when he first went to the rescue of his cousin, Harmon, after the latter had dived into 10 feet of water off the bridge at one end of the lake.
The Kephart boy, however, was able to free himself from the grasp of Harmon and sought to obtain an inflated inner tube with which he had played on other occasions to take to his kin who was floundering in the water, apparently seized with cramps. It was another whim of fate that traded the life of the Kephart boy for that of Jimmy Daniels, as the latter was on the bank when Harmon cried for help. He saw “Sonny” make his rescue effort and then go for the inner tube. Without hesitation, he dashed into the water and went to the aid of the Augustine boy. As he did the latter, grasping for something to help him, took hold of Jimmy and the two went beneath the surface to their graves.
Harmon Augustine, who had been spending the summer vacations with his father at Addison, had come to Connellsville on Saturday so he could attend mass at Immaculate Conception Church as usual on Sunday morning. He had received his communion at that time. He left the Kephart home shortly after noon and started for Reidmore to spend the afternoon with his companions—his cousin “Sonny” Kephart, who was staying with his mother at the Reid home, and James Daniels of Grandview avenue. The Augustine boy was making his first trip to play with his two companions of former years at Reidmore, Jimmy and Sonny, however, had spent practically all of their vacation thus far together at the Reid home. Jimmy had planned to enter a hospital this week to have his tonsils removed.
The trio had not been in the water when they started for the lake. As youngsters usually do, they started for the lake with the jovial laughter of “last one in is a so and so” on their lips and Harmon was the first on the bridge. He immediately leaped in. It was the short span of two minutes that followed which cost the lives of the two popular lads. In the vicinity were the mother and uncle of “Sonny” who rushed to the scene when they heard the latter’s cries but they were unable to find the victims.
The three decided to go swimming, Harmon was the first to get to the water as they headed for the bridge at one end of the lake. He jumped in at a point where it is about 10 feet deep. Undoubtedly seized with cramps as he plunged into the cold water, the youth began floundering about and cried for help. “Sonny” Kephart, trailing him on the dash to the lake, leaped to the rescue of his cousin. As he attempted to aid Harmon, “Sonny” felt the taller and older boy, in desperation, grab him and pull him under the water. He managed somehow to break away as Harmon momentarily relaxed his death grip and then he swam in the direction of an inflated inner tube with which he had played on previous occasions. “Jimmy” Daniels, who was on the bank at the time, leaped into the water to go to Harmon’s rescue despite the fact he could not swim expertly. As the Kephart boy was after the tube and his back was turned, he failed to notice what developed when the Daniels youngster plunged into the water, but authorities are inclined to believe that when the latter came within reach of Augustine he was grabbed by the frantic swimmer and that both went under the water. “Sonny” shouted for help. His mother, who was sitting in the distance, and an uncle J. Donald Reid, raced to the scene. They went into the water in a futile effort to find the bodies. Even search from a boat was fruitless. Meanwhile some person who had been attracted to the scene put in a call for the Connellsville Fire Department and Fire Chief William E. DeBolf has an inhalator rushed there. Later grappling hooks were dispatched and it was through the use of these that the bodies were recovered from the watery graves about 45 minutes after the drownings.
Both the city and the South Connellsville fire departments were on the scene. Members used a pulmotor in an effort to revive the boys but to no avail. The body of Augustine was removed to the funeral parlors of Deputy Coroner Milton V. Munk and that of Daniels to the undertaking establishment to Charles C. Mitchell where they were prepared for burial.
Harmon Kephart Augustine, the only child of J. Clarence Augustine of Addition and Sarah Kephart Augustine of New York, was born in Merlon, Philadelphia, on March 5, 1922, and had spent the greater part of his life with his maternal grandparents, former State Treasurer and Mrs. Harmon M. Kephart of the Masonic building, South Pittsburgh street. While the Kepharts resided in Philadelphia, the youngster attended the Waldren Academy there. Since coming to Connellsville, however, he had been attending classes at the Immaculate Conception School and next month would have been enrolled as a member of the junior class of the High School. The Augustine boy is a grand-nephew of State Supreme Court Justice John W. Kephart of Ebensburg, the latter being a brother of former State Treasurer H. M. Kephart of the Masonic Building. The youth’s uncle, John W. Kephart, father of “Sonny” Kephart, had been killed in an automobile accident on Christmas Day five years ago as he was returning to Connellsville from Addison.
Jimmy Daniels was the great-grandson of Clark Collins, Connellsville’s last Civil War veteran who died several months ago. His grandfather, the former postmaster, passed away two years ago and it was about two months after that that a brother of the young hero of the drowning tragedy passed away. James Daniels, the son of Mrs. Leona Daniels and a grandson of Mrs. J. Emmett Collins of 301 Grandview avenue, widow of a former postmaster here, is survived by his mother, his maternal grandmother and a sister, Jane, of Pittsburgh. A student in the Cameron Building, he had been very active in the two junior organizations, the popular Junior Drum and Bugle Corps and the recently formed Connellsville School Band. He was an active member of Troop No. 5, Boy Scouts, of the First Methodist Episcopal Church.
The body of the Augustine boy was to be removed this afternoon to the home of an aunt, Mrs. John Kephart, at 112 West Peach street, where it will remain until the time of the funeral. Services will be held Wednesday morning with the cortege meeting at the home at 9:30 o’clock followed by requiem high mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10 o’clock. Rev. Henry A. Geibel, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
The Daniels funeral service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Collins home with Rev. Dr. W. H. Hetrick, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hill Grove Cemetery.
