Harold "Hal" Archer Ogden was born in Clearfield, PA, as one of nine children of Newton Archer and Cora Mark Ogden. He spent his boyhood years on a farm and attended Clearfield High School. Early events in Hal's life foreshadowed his destiny to become a great fighter pilot.
At the age of nine, he walked five miles to see an airplane barnstorm the area and took his first ride. In 1935, along with nine partners, he bought a Curtis Challenger for $500 and formed a flying club. During that time, Hal also managed a little stick time in an Alexander Eaglerock
and a Waco 10. At age 18, Hal enlisted in the Army Air Corps at Langley Field, VA, where he pursued his desire to enter West Point. In 1938, he received an appointment to the Academy from Congressman Don Gingery.
As a cadet, Hal was known as "Og." He was a close friend of the Tactical Department but still attained the rank of first sergeant. His interest in flying was evident by his membership in the Model Airplane Club. He also was a member of the Ski Club and participated on the
soccer and track teams.
A day after graduation, Hal married his petite and vivacious OAO, Lenore "Nonnie" Whelan. Their happy and loving marriage of 58 years ended with Hal's death....
.. . His first assignment after graduation was flight school in Corsicana, TX, where he trained in the PT-19. More training followed in the BT-13 at Randolph Field, TX, then in the AT-6, P-36, P-40 and P-47 at Moore Field, TX. Hal then attended a course in Applied Tactics,
flying P-40s at Orlando Army Air Base, FL.
In April 1943, Hal was assigned to the 356th Fighter Group as a flight commander and, then, assistant group S-3. . . .
The 356th Fighter Group arrived in England in September 1943. There, Hal completed 93 missions in P-47s, 30 of which were dive-bomber missions. He received three Distinguished Flying Crosses and four Air Medals, and was credited with the destruction of four enemy aircraft,
one probable aircraft, four damaged aircraft, 13 locomotives, and one Tiger tank.
In October 1967, Hal was assigned as senior advisor to the Vietnamese Air Force. He flew combat missions in F-5s, A-ls, O-ls, and U-17s. His awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, six Air Medals, and two Air Commendation Medals. Before retiring as a
colonel in October 1970, Hal served his last assignment as deputy chief of staff for Materiel, Headquarters, Tactical Fighter Wing Center, Nellis AFB, NV.
