Centre County's Centre Lines

(Compiled by Robert L. Baker circa 2000).

The Centre Lines project is an effort to organize Centre County's 1890 population by surname. The project was a series begun in celebration of Centre County's 200th birthday on February 13, 2000, for each of the 200 most common surnames appearing in Centre County at the time of the 1860 U.S. Census and the 200 most common surnames appearing in the 1998-1999 Centre County Telephone Directory.

The primary source of Centre Lines is a business directory composed of the original 1890 Census before it was destroyed by fire. (See information about accessing the 1890 Directory on the Census Records page.) The Centre Lines surnames are also supplemented by a description of entries in Linn's History and Beers' Commemorative Biographical Record, as well as any Centre County Library books dealing with a given family.
