The MUSSER Family

This column is sixth in a feature series which focuses on a different Centre County family each week. Five columns will be issued each month beginning in March 1997. This is the first one for April.

This column's focus is on MUSSER. An effort has been made to identify all persons carrying that name in the 1890 U.S. Census, using the Centre County business directory which was formed from a preliminary review of that census before the larger set of 1890 U.S. Census records was destroyed by fire. (Sadly, the directory does not typicaally provide the ages of females, but it's the best record we've got.)

One book length work on the MUSSERs can be found in the Pennsylvania Room of the Centre County library in Bellefonte. It is Helen R. Dunkle's Moser Family: A Genealogical Record (1976), which staarts with John Martin Moser who came to America in 1728 and settled initially in Montgomery County, with later generations to Lehigh and eventually Centre County, where this book is focused. It is not indexed.

There are 53 different first-name entries for Musser in John Blair Linn's History of Centre and Clinton County (1883). In addition, there are 55 references to the Musser name in Beers' Commemorative Biographical Record of Central Pennsylvania (1898) with the following persons (with an identifiable Centre County connection) having separate profiles: A.
