C. B. CLARK'S Johnstown Directory - AND - CITIZENS' REGISTER.MAY -- SEPTEMBER, 1889.
The names on the following pages are the citizens of Johnstown and contiguous boroughs, as they were between the 5th of April and the 6th of May, 1889, when the canvass for the directory of that year was made. The books were printed and in Benshoff's bindery nearly completed when the flood of May 31st destroyed the building, along with thousands of others, and the entire edition was lost. The publisher, however, had the proof sheets and from them has re-published this present edition, hoping the work will be appreciated by those interested in the great calamity. A registration of the survivors of the flood was begun under the direction of Col. J. B. Scott of Pittsburgh, and continued and completed as thoroughly as possible under Gen. Hastings and Col John I. Rodgers, by whom the publisher was also engaged to assist. In this re-print the names of all who registered and those who lived in Localities not flooded are printed without any marks, while the names of those reported drowned have an asterisk (*) and those who were unaccounted for a dagger [note: plus sign] (+) prefixed. |
