KNIGHT GENEALOGY

Giles Knight b Bristol, Gloucestshire, England (m 1-Elizabeth Williams
2-Elizabeth Payne ) d 7/13/1707 (Quaker month 9) in Chizelborow, Middle
District, Gloucestshire. ( b May9 1614 in Lingfield, Surrey England.

His parents were: Edward Knight and Alice Dimery, b 1588 in Lingfield.

They had 5 sons & 1 daughter:
Abel b 1651 in the Bristol area. He arrived with Wm. Penn & later
moved to Va. first & then to NC . He is buried in Edgecombe County, NC

Benjamin b ------ moved to Bensalem Township, Pa.(m Hannah)
The ancestor of the Pennsylvania Knights.

John b-------- (m unknown ). He was the ancestor of the New England Knights

Giles b 1653 d 1726 (m Mary English dau of Joseph English in 1679 She died 1732. they were married in Rodborough, England & came
to America 1680’s on the Society (some records state on the Welcome)
Giles & Mary settled in Byberry, Pa & had 12 children some dieing in infancy. Bye names following (Giles seems to be the first of his family to
join the Quaker movement probably when he married Mary English ). He
was a weaver and inherited a coat of arms from an ancestor.

Joseph Knight (1680-1762) m Abigail Antill (1682-1764). They had 2 children Giles 2nd (1719-1799) m Eliz. James-10 children; 2nd wife
Phoebe Thomas –six children.

Mary Knight (1681-1794) Giles Knight (1681-1682). Thomas Knight
1685-1774) Mary Knight 1686—Martha Knight (1695-1716), Daniel Knight (1697-1782)
. Thomas b 1662 in Nailsworth, Eng. (m 1Dorothea Bond She
Died 1685. 2-Eliz. Browne in June 12,1686. He died 1748. He was the
son of the first marriage.

Ann Christened on 1/6/1660 in Rodborough, Gloucestshire, Eng.
(m Samuel Dark who came on the ship with them on 4/17/1683. She
died on 8/13/1683).

Abel Knight, arrived in Maryland Sept 1 1682, aboard the “Welcome.”
She was 100 tons. Captained by Rob’t Greenway & carried 100
passengers. He married & moved first to Va.& then to NC. sp unknown


John: b 1684 (m Hannah Babcock in 1718). He was born inEdge-
combe, NC & died in1788.

William: b 1886 in Nansemond Co.,Va (m Martha). His will written
3/12/1751 in Barte County NC

John: b1705-1707 in either Edgcombe, Co. NC or Nansemonde Co.
Va. (m Isabel Gaston). She was born in Nansemonde, Va., & died
10/10/1769 in Edgecombe Co., NC. (May have been Gascoine)

They had:

John b 1750 in Edgecombe Co.,NC (m Frances Fannie Newsom b
ca 1753 in Edgecombe & died ca 1840 in Wayne Co., Ga.

John Knight served in the Revolutionary War.

Moses: b 1736 (m Charity Carter Benton, widow, 22/9/1761). He
Died 14/6/1781. She was born ca 1740, the dau of Kindred Carter.
Buried Edgecombe County,NC.

Moved with son Joel & his family to Charlotte Harbour in
1868. His son Jesse & his family settled west of the Myakka
River. He is buried in Knights Station near Plant City.

Hamilton County (Knights Station) Frederick Varn was born
12/6/1778 in Orangeburg District SC. His father was John
Varn, born in Germany & his mother was Anna Nancy Baker
born in SC. Caroline Rebecca’s mother was Sara Hiers dau of
Jacob Hiers of Columbia ,SC (1750–1806) & Kathren Howard


Thomas: b 3/1/1820. d

Joel: b 24/2/1823.(m Virginia Mitchell on29/3/1848)
Moved to Charlotte Harbor where he established a cattle
kingdom .

Frances b9/5/1825 d 11/12/1896 ( m1- John Zipperer
He was born in 1824 & died in 1844-2- Jacob Summerlin
b 13/2/1845 He was known as a cattle baron. He founded
& named Orlando Fl & Bartow Fl which was formerly
named Blount. Several institutions named for him since
he founded them. Frances (Fannie) was a sister of Jesse &
Joel Knight. She had one son by her first spouse. Jacob had
been married before and had sons from his first wife. He
was born in Alachua County . He amassed a great fortune
in the cattle business and used it to help the various com-
munities.

Martha Eliz b 1858 (m Charles Le Count Lowe b 2/11/1857
in Key West) She was known as “Aunt Mat” in the area of
Nokomis & served as midwife for several years.

Ringo.CL’s children were Bucky & “Sissy”.

Frances Fletcher b (m Arthur Briton (AB)
Edwards 6/22/1900 ). Mr. Edwards came to Nokomis area
in 1893 & remained there for 10 years. He lived with the
Curry family for some time. After marrying, the couple
lived where Bay Shore Acres is now. They moved to
Sarasota where he went into real estate. He showed Mrs
Potter Palmer various properties when she arrived in
1910. He was mayor of Sarasota for several years.

Mary Alice (m Arnot Wilson b 1/20/1882 son of Augustus
M Wilson & Caledonia Crum. Arnot was stationmaster in
Boyette Fl

Caroline Rebecca b1860 (m Alfred F Wrede) father of
Molly Blackburn (Mrs Albert) & Hattie

in Knights station.

Jesse the father served in Indian Wars in his section in N Florida a a private
Under Capt Sam E Swilley in 2nd Reg. Florida Militia from June16-Dec 1837 & under Capt David Bryan in Lounds Co. in1838 & under Lt. Stephen Whitfield’s detachment of Ga. militia at old Fort Gilmer, now in
Clinch Co. on the Suwannee River.

Following his marriage, he lived in Hamilton Co. near Frederick Varn’s home, near Plant City, his wife’s father.
In 1868 he moved his family to Manatee Co. ( now Sarasota Co.) to
Horse & Chaise –now Nokomis. He founded the local Methodist Church (1903-1904) built east of the Pioneer Cemetery in Nokomis.He also
donated the land & founded the first school where his wife taught. His home
was on the south side of Shakett Creek near the old trestle.

Note: The name Knight apparently was derived from the word “cniht”
Meaning “ one who held land for service (military} to King or lord”

Knights have been prominent in Bristol,Gloucestershire,England
since the 14th century. Sir. John Knight (1612-1683) was mayor of
Bristol & was knighted by Charles II on Sept. 5,1663. He was noted
for his persecution of Quakers & Catholics. Not known if he was an
ancestor. Various Knights of Bristol have been described in ‘The
Dictionary of National Biography.” Vol.XI, page 255, by George
Smith.

There was a William Knight b 1538 recorded in Bristol, Gloucester,
England m Ursula Herpert.
