							Schall, Reuben E.
  Apollo
Sentinel, Apollo, PA Friday, February 18, 1927
REUBEN E. SCHALL Mr. Reuben E. Schall, a prominent
contractor and citizen of Vandergrift died in his home
in Longfellow St., Monday morning, February 14th, in
his 64th year. Mr. Schall, while not being very well
for some time had been very active up until the time
of his death, retiring as usual on Sunday night and
thought by members of his family to be in his usual
health. But when his wife awakened in the morning about
6:30 o’clock, found he had arisen and gone down stairs
unheard by anyone and upon going down stairs later she
found him laying in the dining room with his hand beneath
his head as if sleeping. But on going to him found it
to be the sleep that knows no waking as all efforts
failed to arouse him. Life had been extinct for sometime.
Death was due to neuralgia of the heart. Mr. Schall
was born in South Bend Township, Armstrong County on
May 22, 1863, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas
Schall and spent his boyhood days in that township.
He later moved with his parents to Maysville and spent
his young manhood there, coming to Apollo about forty
years ago and engaged in carpentering which he followed
for a number of years, but for the past few years had
been in the coal and supply business. Mr. Schall
was married in 1895 to Lizzie J. Jackson, daughter,
of the late W. J. and Martha E. Jackson, of Kiski township.
Mr. and Mrs. Schall went to house keeping in Apollo
after living there a few years went to Vandergrift Heights
and built the home in which he died, where they spent
the past 30 years. He leaves to mourn their loss besides
his beloved wife, Mrs. Lizzie Jackson Schall, two daughters,
Martha J. now the wife of W. H. Richey, of Allison,
and Miss Louse S. at home and the following brothers
and sisters: A. P. Schall, Vandergrift; Mrs. J. S. Lafferty,
of Latrobe; Harvey Schall and Mrs. H. B. Lemon, of Massilion,
Ohio; Mrs. H. W. McIlwain, of Canton, Ohio, and Mrs.
							H. T. Lochard, of Long Run. Funeral services were
conducted Wednesday, February 16th, at 2:00 in the Lutheran
Church of Vandergrift Heights of which the deceased
was a member, in charge of Rev. Roy [??]. Myers, Vandergrift.
Interment followed in the Vandergrift cemetery. Mr.
Schall was a kind and affectionate husband and father,
wonderfully attached to his home. He was a charter member
of the Lutheran Church of Vandergrift Heights, a very
regular and faithful attendant at the church services
and a member of the K. of [??] Lodge of Vandergrift.
He was one of the pioneers of the Heights and being
in the contracting business became known to everyone
in the community and will be greatly missed as he was
kind and neighborly to all as was many times spoken
of by friends and neighbors as hundreds view the remains
in the home or attended the funeral services.

							Smith, Howard S. Death
							EDITORIAL
							- Apollo, PA., January 20, 1960 (as published in unknown
Armstrong County, Pennsylvania newspaper): [note - this
article is dated 1960 yet Howard's death certificate
lists his death as 1961] HOWARD S. SMITH / THE OBITUARY
NOTICE of the death of Howard S. Smith says that Mr.
Smith was Apollo Borough Council secretary for 38 years,
that he was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian
Church, a life member of F and AM Lodge and a former
hardware store owner. MR. SMITH WAS ALL of these
things, to be sure. But to us, and to most everyone
who knew him he was so much more. We knew him as the
able, conscientious and helpful secretary of Council.
To a fumbling new reporter he gave a wealth of information.
He knew his town, the things that had happened in it,
the whys of this and that, what probably would occur
next, and the background behind actions taken. And he
was generous with his time and his knowledge. "SMITTY"
TOOK the time to do his job well. He took time also
to help and to explain, to ease the path where he could.
He did many little favors, and he asked for none in
return. HE HAD A READY twinkle in his eyes, and he
most always smiled at life, a life he seemed to enjoy
immensely. His inner serenity would shine its brightest
when others around him lost their tempers, or were caught
off balance at the fast pace of talk and events. Smitty
remained calm as ever, at times throwing in a quip that
eased the tension. HIS LIFE ON EARTH was a full one,
notable for its kindness, gentleness, and wisdom. He
was kind by nature, when there was no need to be. He
was gentle where many would have been gruff. And he
was wise from years of observing, learning and growing
in heart and mind. HOWARD S. SMITH will be long remembered
in Apollo. We add our sympathy to that already expressed
by his many friends in the area to those who survive
him. We, too, will miss him.

							Thompson, Charles D.
							(Charles was
the son of Martha Elizabeth Duff and Marvenous Kennedy
Thompson) Daily Leader - Times, Kittanning, PA Ford
City Dept Friday, July 24, 1923 Ford City, July
24 - Caught in a swirlpool in the Walker mill dam near
Tunnelville on Crooked Creek, Charles, the 11 year old
son of M. K. (Marvanius Kennedy) Thompson, of Fourth
Ave, was drowned and Mr. Thompson in trying to rescue
his son narrowly escaped the same fate. The distressing
accident occurred shortly before 5 0'clock yesterday
afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Thompson, son Charles,
Howard Conner, a playmate and Mrs. Clara Duff, motored
to Crooked Creek, in the afternoon for an outing. The
lads who had donned bathing suits, ran gleefully into
the water. Charles had gone but a short distance when
he was caught in a swirlpool and went down. As he rose
to the surface he called for help. Mr. Thompson jumped
into the water. The boy grabbed hold of him and both
went down twice. In the death struggle the lad slipped
from his father and sank for a third time. Mr. Thompson
succeeded with difficulty getting out of the treacherous
pool. The Conner lad ran for assistance and among
those who responded was Clair Heilman. Mr. Heilman by
diving succeeded in recovering the body after it had
been in the water for about 20 minutes. All efforts
at resuscitation failed. A physician who had been summoned
pronounced life extinct. The body was wrapped in a blanket
and brought to the parents home. Later the body was
taken charge of by an undertaker. The lad who was
commonly known as "Buddy" was a bright little
fellow. Scores of his little friends gathered about
the Thompson home and discussed the tragedy in awe stricken
tones. Charles was a pupil in the Sixth grade at St.
Mary's parochial school. Besides his parents he is
survived by a sister, Mary. The members of the L.C.B.A
will meet at the school hall this evening at 8 0'clock
and go to the Thompson home. ---------------------------------------------------------------
