SWEARINGEN - HUGHES

Miss Emily HUGHES, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter HUGHES of Clinton, and Edwin L. SWEARINGEN, Jr., of Pughtown, W. Va., were united in marriage in the Presbyterian church, Chester, W. Va. The pastor, the Rev. T. C. WEIMER, performed the double ring ceremony. Miss Birdella HUGHES was her sister's maid of honor and Shield MAYHEW of Pughtown served as bestman. Upon their return from a brief wedding trip through Pennsylvania, the newlyweds will reside with the bridegroom's parents in Pughtown.

SWEARINGEN - SMITH

Miss Esther N. SMITH, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. O. SMITH of McCLEARY, and Mr. William Van SWEARINGEN of Aliquippa were united in marriage Saturday, June 22, 1940, in the Mill Creek church, the Rev. James J. REED performing the ring ceremony.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a white marquisette gown with lace inset sleeves and a train with a finger-tip veil. She carried a bouquet of white roses with yellow maline frills.  The maid-of-honor, Miss Helen GEORGE of Dormont, cousin of the bride, wore a hyacinth blue marquisette gown and carried yellow roses and delphinium with maline frills. The bridesmaids, Miss Jean SMITH, sister of the bride, and Miss Hattebelle WHITEHILL of Aliquippa, wore similar gowns of yellow marquisette with blue frills. The flower girls, Judy and Joyce McELHANEY, aged 3-1/2 years, of Akron, Ohio, cousins of the bride, wore short blue skirts and white bodices and carried flowers in pastel shades. Mr. George SWEARINGEN of Aliquippa, brother of the bridegroom, served as bestman and the ushers were John SMITH of Weirton and Mr. Harold McCOY of Girard, Ohio. The bride's mother, Mrs. Emma Jardine SMITH, wore a white redingote gown with gold and white trimmings and a corsage of pink roses. Miss Marguerite SMITH sang "Because," "My Song from Paradise," and "O Perfect Love." A reception followed in the SMITH home.

Mrs. SWEARINGEN is a graduate of Aliquippa high school and Geneva college. She taught for three years in the McDonald (Ohio) schools. Mr. SWEARINGEN is a graduate of Chester high school and attended Geneva and Maryville college, Tennessee. After a wedding trip they will reside at Linden avenue, Aliquippa.

[ SWEENEY - SMITH ]

Miss Margaret Ellen SMITH and Mr. Patrick SWEENEY were married on Wednesday morning, September 29, at half past eight, in St. Alphonsus' Church, the Rev. Joseph A. BURGOON officiating. The ceremony was followed by nuptial high mass. Miss Lucy MURRY and Mr. Charles SWEENEY were the attendants. A wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Owen SMITH, on Valley street. Mr. and Mrs. SWEENEY left for Detroit on a tour of the lakes. They will reside in McDonald on their return. Mr. SWEENEY is well known in base ball circles as a minor league pitcher. He is proprietor of a cigar store in Braddock. His parents reside here where he was reared.

Miss Hollis Ruth REED, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. REED of Burgettstown, formerly of Third street, McDonald, and Mr. Andrew Morgan SWINGLE, son of Mr. and Mrs. George SWINGLE of Washington, were united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents at five o'clock Wednesday evening, January 20, 1926, by the Rev. John R. THOMPSON, pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian church of Burgettstown. The couple left that evening for Washington, D.C., and returned Tuesday evening. For the present they are making their home with the bride's parents.
