FLETCHER - BENNETT
Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Gailey FLETCHER flew to New York City, then went on to Nantucket Island, which is 30 miles out in the Atlantic, following their marriage at
3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 17, 1942, at New Kensington.
The ceremony in the Parnassus Presbyterian church, witnessed by several hundred townspeople and out-of-the-city
guests, was an old-fashioned tradition, in keeping with the hundred-year history of the church.
Dr. George S. BOWDEN, minister of the church, read the rites before an embankment of cibotium palms, ferns and two urns of white gladioli.
Mrs. R. E. MURRAY played a half-hour recital of organ music before the entrance of the bridal party.
The bride, Miss Helen Marie BENNETT, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stanley BENNETT of New Kensington, entered the church on the arm of her father. She was
attired in a quaint gown of white marquisette and carried an unusual Colonial-type bouquet of white geraniums. The geranium leaves
outlined the bouquet. Marquisette fluting cascaded down the front of the full skirt and outlined the hemline which swept the floor.
Fluting defined the sweetheart neckline. The gown was fashioned with fitted bodice and
bracelet- length sleeves. A finger-tip length veil fell from a tiny poke-bonnet styled cap of white marquisette. Helen carried a point-lace
handkerchief that belonged to her maternal great-grandmother and which Mrs. BENNETT carried at her wedding.
Miss Virginia BENNETT was her sister's maid of honor, and the bridesmaid was Miss Katherine A. DRURY of Girard, Pa.
The bridegroom, son of Mrs. H. H. SLOCUM of New Kensington and the late Clarence T. FLECHER, chose his brother, Clarence T. FLECHER of
Pittsfield, Mass, for bestman. Ushers were two Massachusetts Institute of Technology friends and two Carnegie Tech classmates.
Mrs. BENNETT appeared in heavenly blue chiffon with matching hat; Mrs. SLOCUM was attired in palace blue rayon crepe with rose hat; and Mrs. S.C.
GAILEY, maternal grandmother of the bridegroom, wore navy blue sheer. They all wore an orchid with their costumes.
A reception was held at the Brackenridge Country club after the rites. The bridal table was centered with a three-tiered cake and floral arrangements.
After guests had been served at small tables, the bridal couple left for their wedding trip. The bride wore a two-piece dress, a trotter green print combined with
white hat with matching ribbon.
Numerous out-of-town guests and relatives attended the ceremony and reception. Among them were a great-uncle and two great-aunts of Mr. FLETCHER;
John MCNARY and Miss Clara MCNARY of McDonald and Miss Ida GAILEY of Blossburg.
