Capt. Hugh A. ROGERS

Makes Record as Notary Public
When Capt. Hugh A. ROGERS, cashier at the Manufacturers Light & Heat
company in Washington, and one of the best known men in the community,
acting as a notary public administered the oath of office to the
directors of the First National Bank and the Citizens National bank at
the present year, he established a unique record. For it was the
forty-fourth consecutive time that he had performed a similar service at
the First National and the fortieth time that he had acted in this
capacity at the Citizens.
When Hugh ROGERS, a budding young business man of Washington, appointed
a notary public the year previous, was called to the First National bank
in 1881 and asked to “swear in” the directors of that oldest
national bank of Washington county, he perhaps had no vision of
performing such a service for 44 years without a break. And when
President George ROBERTS of the Citizens National sent for him in 1885,
when that institution was organized, he probably had no prophetic
feeling regarding successive service. Of course records of this kind are
not available, but no one has heard of such continuous service and the
“Captain’s” record will be accepted as one that has never been
equaled.
Not a singe man identified with the First National bank when Captain
ROGERS walked into the modest banking room at the beginning of the year
1881 is with the organization. In fact none of them is alive today. The
president at that time was Colin M. REED Sr., the cashier James
MCILVAINE, and the teller A. S. RITCHIE, father of William B. RITCHIE of
Washington.
N. R. BAKER, cashier, an R. V. JOHNSON and John W. DONNAN, directors,
the latter now president, are the only men connected with the citizens
bank who presented themselves before young Notary ROGERS in 1885 to take
the oath on the organization of that now flourishing institution. During
his years of activity, Captain ROGERS has seen the passing of many men
of prominence in Washington’s banking circles and has been the
intimate of practically all of them. “I am proud of the friends I have
made,” the captain has frequently said, “and I hope before I die to
make as many more.”
Hugh ROGERS is a native of Canonsburg, coming to Washington in 1867. He
was early identified with the Peoples Light & Heat company, which
later was merged with the Manufacturers Natural Gas company to form the
present Manufacturers Light & Heat company. He was among the
earliest of Washington citizens to identify himself with the oil and gas
industry and has been the cashier of the Manufacturers company since its
organization. He lives at 251 Jefferson avenue, is an inveterate reader
of good literature; and a thirty-second degree football fan.
Captain ROGERS is an older brother of John C. ROGERS and A. E. ROGERS of
McDonald.
