Theoplie BRUEY, farmer Crosscreek Township,
murdered his wife and assaulted his daughter
McDonald PA Outlook newspaper of November 4, 1916, page unknown:
Having probably fatally wounded his wife and seriously injured his daughter
in a murderous assault upon them with a corn cutter, Theoplie BRUEY, a farmer of Crosscreek Township, was brought to the Washington county jail
Monday.
Mrs. BRUEY, aged 44 years, is in the Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh,
suffering from numerous ugly slashes on her chest, arms, head, back, and
other parts of her body.
The daughter, Rosie, aged 14, received several gashes in the
back when her enraged father turned upon and attacked her as she went to the
rescue of her mother armed with a club. Her injuries are not thought to be
serious.
Jealousy is said to have caused BRUEY to make the brutal assault
upon his wife. Mrs. BRUEY was in a field not far from the house milking a
cow. Armed with the corn cutter, BRUEY went to the field and made the attack. As she realized the intent of her infuriated husband, the woman
raised a stool on which she had been sitting and attempted to ward off his
fierce blows.
Screaming for help as she found she was unable to defend herself, Mrs. BRUEY attracted the attention of her daughter, Rosie.
Securing a club, the girl bravely rushed to the assistance of her mother.
Twice she struck her father over the back. He then turned upon her. She
fled and he pursued, striking her. As she fell to the ground under his blows, BRUEY suddenly turned and left.
Later BRUEY was apprehended by officers and taken before Justice of the Peace J. P. LINN, of Burgettstown, who held him on charges of
attempting to kill his wife.
Before going to press we received word that Mrs. BRUEY died at
the Hospital on Tuesday as a result of her injuries.
Note: There are a variety of "corn cutters" before and now.
However, I believe it likely was a corn cutter used in a field, rather
than a wooden with blade corn cutter used in the kitchen or for canning.
He was a farmer and out in the fields; murder is often committed with a
weapon of convenience. A machinery blade was easily removed for
sharpening. See
