86th Birthday Celebration of Flora ROBERTS SCHMITT
Former teacher
From Nov. 21, 1984 McDonald PA Record-Outlook:
Flora ROBERTS SCHMITT, a McDonald native and former local school teacher,
was honored on her 86th birthday recently by the Hancock County (West
Virginia) Association of Retired School Employees.
She was presented with a life membership in both the Hancock County
Association and the West Virginia state association.
Mrs. SCHMITT was instrumental in founding the HCARSE with seven other
teachers. She served as president of the organization for three years
following its founding in 1966 and remained active until failing health
prevented her from participating in activities.
The purpose of the HCARSE is to bring retired school employees of Hancock
County into closer relationship and to work with the state association.
Mrs. SCHMITT was born in McDonald and held her first teaching position at
McAdams School, a one-room school with eight grades. She walked back and forth
from her home to the school regardless of the weather. She later taught second
grade at McDonald Elementary School for nine years.
She moved to Weirton, W. Va., in 1941 and taught in the Weirton schools 20
years.
The only daughter in a family of six sons, Mrs. SCHMITT and her husband,
George, lost their only son in an auto accident in Pittsburgh in 1947 when he
was 21 years old.
She has traveled extensively all over the world and enjoys
keeping in touch with her former students.
