Sixty-Sixth Wedding Anniversary

From The McDonald PA Outlook, March 7, 1929

Celebrate Sixty-Sixth Wedding Anniversary

Last Monday, March 4, Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Newlin HOUGH, aged respectively 89 and 87 years celebrated their sixty-sixth wedding anniversary. The celebration was in the form of a surprise dinner party, given at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Frank DEITRICH of Bergman street, Sheraden. Their home is in Noblestown but for the past few months they have been with their daughter in Sheraden. They are the parents of Mrs. J. ROY of Noblestown. Mr. HOUGH was born May 8, 1840 in Port Royal, Westmoreland county, and his wife was born April 23, 1842, in Berlin, Somerset county Pa. In August 1862, the girl visited an uncle in Port Royal and met the young man who became her companion through these long years. They were married seven months later. Most of Mr. HOUGH's life has been spent in the oil business, although he was a farmer and a huckster for short periods at different times. Following his wedding he took his bride to Port Royal for a time and then followed the oil activity to Oil City, to McDonald [Pa], to Sistersville, W. Va., and then to Noblestown [Pa], their present home.

There are nine children, eighteen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. HOUGH say that the secret of their continuous marital bliss lies in cooperation, peace, work and smiles. "Don't both get mad at the same time. Life is too short to spend it fighting. Work together and don't either one try to be the boss, Smile, push your cheeks up. Don't let your face sag into wrinkles and ugly lines. Work and work hard, both of you."  On such a philosophy of life, Mr. and Mrs. HOUGH have lived happily through sixty-six years of married life.
