Child Using Wall Telephone
These old fashioned phones had a crank on the right side
of the rectangular box. A user first cranked the phone to get the
operator, then told the name of the party they were calling. The
operator manually connected the call. All calls were on party lines so
any neighbor who picked up their phone could hear both sides of the
conversation. Although persons tried to maintain privacy, some
folks enjoyed listening to others' phone calls as a pasttime.
The mouthpiece was moveable up and down, as shown in this
picture. The front ledge was convenient for writing or to rest the
elbows on. These phones were wall mounted about chest to head
high. Tall men often had to stoop.
