Fulton PHILLIPS died on Tuesday, September 4, 1917, at his home in Oakdale, after an illness of several months, aged 75 years. He was one of the best-known newspaper writers of Western Pennsylvania, and his writings were widely quoted.
Mr. PHILLIPS was born on the STILLEY farm near Primrose, one mile southwest of McDonald, in the old log house which is still standing. He was graduated from the old Jefferson College, now Washington & Jefferson, in Washington. He served four years in the Union Army during the Civil War, first enlisting in the Tenth Pennsylvania Infantry, and participating in the Peninsular campaign. His second enlistment was in the Second Ohio Heavy Artillery.
After an honorable discharge from the service of the government at the close of the war, Mr. PHILLIPS for a number of years was principal, first of the Fourth ward schools of Allegheny and later as principal of the schools in the 23d ward Pittsburgh. He later served as a professor of Latin and Greek in the Southwestern Normal School at California and became known as one of the best instructors in Western Pennsylvania.
After holding the chair at the normal for some time, Mr. PHILLIPS decided to quit the teaching profession and to enter newspaper work. In 1875 he established the Rural Notes at Canonsburg, which later was changed to The Canonsburg Notes. He also spent some time in the West, establishing papers in Missouri and California.
In 1888 Mr. PHILLIBS moved from Canonsburg to McDonald and established the Outlook, which he edited with vigor for fifteen years. After retiring from newspaper work he located in Oakdale.
He was a member of the Oakdale Presbyterian Church and an active worker in that body.
Mr. PHILLIPS is survived by his wife and one son, Delmont PHILLIPS, who publishes The Oakdale Times; one grandson, Lockhart PHILLIPS, who has enlisted in the Army and is now in training at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., and a granddaughter, Miss Mary
HILLIPS. He is also survived by one brother, Dr. H. S. PHILLIPS of Scranton, Pa., a half-brother, Houston PHILLIPS of Chartiers township, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Frances SCOTT of Canonsburg and Miss May PHILLIPS of Marion, Alabama.
Funeral services were held at the late residence Thursday, conducted by the Rev. George FRANZ, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Oakdale. Interment was in the Oakdale cemetery.
