Samuel J. Ross - Samuel J. Ross, 84, of Scenery Hill R. D. 1, died
Thursday, November 11, 1971, at 10:45 p.m. in Washington Hospital.
He was born September 15, 1887, in Greene County, a son of Joh(sic)
[and] Lattie Tharp Ross. [Note: Obituary reads like this: "Joh
Lattie Tharp Ross" without the "and" between the
parents' names and the "n" missing on "John".]
Mr. Ross was a farmer and a member of the Ten Mile Brethren
Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel May McCarty; two sons, John, of
Pitcarin, and Robert, of Scenery Hill R. D. 1; four daughters: Mrs.
Thelma McKenna, of Pittsburgh; Mrs. Eva Watkins, of Mesa, Ariz.; Mrs.
Wilma Johns, of Scenery Hill, and Mrs. Mary Jane DeWitt, of
Fredericktown; two brothers, Stephen, of Waynesburg, and Walter, of
Washington; one sister, Mrs. Sadie Barnhart Wipley**, of Washington;
20 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
One son, one daughter, one brother and four sisters are deceased.
** Should say Mrs. Sadie Barnhart Whipkey.
Funeral Notice, same date, same page: ROSS - Friends of Samuel J.
Ross, of Scenery Hill R. D. 1, who died Thursday, November 11, 1971,
will be received after 2 p. m. Saturday in the Schrontz and Nichol
Funeral Home, Marianna, where services will be held Monday, Nov. 15,
at 1 p.m. in charge of Rev. Carl Phillips. Burial in North Ten
Mile Cemetery.
NOTE: Ten Mile Brethren Church is Ten Mile Church of the Brethren
(COB) up on the hill above Marianna PA on the Dunkard Church Road (see
Mapquest and see Ten Mile Church of the Brethren on my other web
pages). The Funeral Notice is confusing, since Ten Mile
C.O.B. Church was also referred to as "North Ten Mile
BRETHREN Church" BUT, the true references in old newspapers
of "North Ten Mile" was/is
the "North Ten Mile BAPTIST Church" which is a different denomination and at
a different location than the "Ten Mile Church of the Brethren (COB)".
NOTE: Samuel J. Ross is part of my ROSS-THEAKSTON line.
(The surrounding items on this Xerox copy are located in the years
folder, under 1971.)
