For early newspapers, Editors enlisted help from "Correspondents".  A Correspondent lived in a local town, township, or general area.  Each correspondent collected 'newsy' tidbits about the town's residents.  These tidbits documented the comings and goings of individuals and families.   Often, the writers focused only on people in the community who were wealthy, prosperous, popular, or who had long family histories in the area. But other correspondents provided information about anyone.  Of course, unusual happenings frequently became news, no matter who was involved.

When a correspondent had enough items, these were given to the newspaper Editor. The items were used in columns named by town, or were used as column fillers when spaces needed filled between more important articles.

None of the people named received reimbursement.  Instead, this trend began as a way to entice residents to buy newspapers or buy subscriptions.  A person would never know if or when their name might appear, and everyone was curious about what was written regarding their families.

By the mid 1950s through 1970s, more people viewed these newsy tidbits as invasions of their privacy. People also feared their homes could be broken into while they were absent, the same argument used against providing too much detail in funeral notices.  Slowly, Locals, Glances, and Personals disappeared from major newspapers, but were still used in newsletters from small towns and groups.  Over time, the term "Personals" became associated with "Personals" in the want-ad section.
