Note: This church and cemetery is, except for St. Basil's in Dushore, the most prominent Catholic religious center in the history of Sullivan County, despite its location just over the border in Bradford County. Many, if not most, of the Catholics of Forks, Forksville, Campbellville and the northwestern part of Sullivan County patronized this church and their ancestors are buried in the cemetery out back. There is one stone where the name is illegible, but we have the birthdate, Sept. 27, 1867 and the death date, October 14, 1898. In January 2014, Lynn Franklin rephotographed this stone. Based on a close examination of the enlarged photo and a review of the actual burial plot, courtesy of Ed Kelly, we believe the stone marks the grave of James Bennett. It is so indicated below; if any reader has information to the contrary, please let us know. There are also a few unusual listings. For example, Mary A. Francke Hennessey (1906-1959) is how her listing appears on the stone but she is buried with Joseph A. Francke (1906-1956). Per a note from Ed Kelly in December 2022:
Mary A. Francke Hennessey (1906-1959) is the sister of Joseph A. Francke (1906-1956). See her Find a Grave memorial ID 39769314. Her spouse is Joseph Bernard Hennessey, who is buried at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Towanda, Bradford County, PA. See his Find a Grave memorial ID 99344687. Mary A. Francke Hennessey (1906-1959) and Joseph A. Francke (1906-1956) are twins born to Joseph J. Francke (1875-1945) and Elfie Elizabeth Lancaster Francke (1872-1926) who also are buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Overton, Bradford County, PA.. See their FAG memorial IDs 245830357 and 195195702.
Also, Mary Hannon Sick (1861-1948) is buried with James M. Hannon. Was Sick her maiden name or did she remarry? In December 2011, this issue was clarified for us by Edward Kelly--see the Footnote * at the bottom of this page.

In the summer of 2000, Lynn Franklin, wife of Bob Sweeney, Sullivan County Web Page Coordinator, took several pictures of grave markers for members of the Kelly family to which Bob is related. They are linked here to those stones, with the proximate text embedded in crimson to distinguish them from pictures contributed by others. Bob's paternal grandmother was Agnes Elizabeth (Kelly) Sweeney. While she is buried in Towanda, not here, many of her extended family are at rest in this cemetery. A list with photos for these specific interments can be found at Kelly and Related Family Burials.

Also, beginning in October 2005, Michael Dempsey offered to post pictures of selected tombstones and markers from this cemetery. We will link these pictures as they become available and are appreciative of Mike's efforts in this regard. He is a descendant of the multifaceted Dempsey families of Sullivan County.

In July 2006, P. Dean Homer contributed to Edward Kelly a layout of the cemetery grave sites. This contribution was made in conjunction with the Kelly Family Reunion for which Ed was the organizer. The two-page layout can be examined at the bottom of this page. Then, in 2011, through the generous cooperation of the Reverend Joseph Hornick and Bettyann Sick Goodyear, Bob Sweeney and Lynn Franklin, his wife, were permitted to photograph and transcribe the death records for St. Francis Xavier Church (1898-1980). You can find a link to these documents near the bottom of the Catholic Death Records Page.

Finally, in March 2013, the Sullivan County Historical Society (SCHS) began contributing information and obituary records for this site. We have posted those additions in vermilion colored notes. We are very appreciative for this new material.

* Editor's Note:

Mary Louise (Bauer) Hannon Sick's first husband was James M. Hannon who died in 1906. James M. Hannon was the son of Michael and Mary Lane Hannon and the brother of Helen Elizabeth (Ella) Hannon (who was married to (1) Daniel Kelly Jr. and (2) Daniel Moore) and Anna Hannon (who was married to John Kelly).
Mary Louis Bauer's second husband was William M. Sick whose first wife, Catherine Kelly, died in 1910.
Note that Daniel Kelly Jr., John Kelly, and Catherine Kelly Sick were siblings--the sons and daughter of Daniel and Mary Leahy Kelly, paternal great grandparents to Bob Sweeney, myself and Ken Beirne, among many others.
It was not an uncommon custom or practice among the Irish for persons whose first spouse had died, and who had remarried, to be buried with their first spouse. Thus, William M. Sick is buried with Catherine Kelly; and Mary Louise Bauer is buried with James M. Hannon. Similarly, my paternal aunt, Catherine (Kate) Waples Kelly McMahon, is buried with her first husband, Joseph D. Kelly, in this cemetery in the same plot as my parents, Edward and Frances Burke Kelly. Aunt Kate's second husband, Joseph P. McMahon, is buried with his first wife, Laura Obert McMahon, in St. Basil's Cemetery, in nearby Dushore, PA.
