Here lie the bodies of six Hungarian laborers who died in a tragic fire in the year 1886 while building the Williamsport & North Branch Railroad. Their identity is known only to God.** |
** Editor's Note: In August 2007, Kathy Prichard provided their names, obtained from railroad records: John Felichsko, Joseph Meecloch, Paul Kolokoy, Michael Feltovich, Fetzco Schikiski, Peter Kromo and George Krovins. |
** Carl Rex Masteller:
Per Milly Gowdy on 08/31/2008:
I am a descendant of Jefferson Alexander and Catherine Elizabeth (Elrsten) Masteller, the parents of Carl Rex. I have in my possession, what I am assuming is a funeral card or memorial to Carl Rex Masteller.
Charles Robinson, now deceased, gave it to me several years ago. His mother, Mary (Masteller) Robinson, was my great-aunt. It measures 16 X 22 inches and is very fragile. There are pieces missing from the edges and there are several cracks in the paper. The page is decorated with angels, cherubs, flowers, butterflies, a cross, and an oval surrounded with olive branches, with the words "At Rest" over a cross. Also, included with the funeral card were two small pieces of shiny black paper that were glued onto two narrow strips of cardboard.
The first piece, which is missing part of the right hand side, has the following etched onto it:
Carl R. Masteller
Died Aug. 1910
Age = 7 Mo 10 Da
The second piece has the following written on it:
We loved him, yes, we loved him,
But angels loved him more,
And they have sweetly called him
To yonder shining shore
The golden gates were opened
A gentle voice said "come"!
And with farewells unspoken
He calmly entered home.
On the tombstone, the death year for Carl Rex was 1909, which very well could have been incorrectly etched on the tombstone by the stone mason, or the information entered on the shiny black paper was incorrect. I need to do some research to find out which year of birth and death was correct and I will respond when I find the correct year.
I would like to share the funeral card with everyone, and will be donating it to the Sullivan County Historical Society.
Note: Per Melanie Norton of the Sullivan County Historical Society:
..... we've had a few such cases with smaller funeral cards and the clothes are cut from the article of clothing the deceased is wearing upon burial (or that which they were wearing on the day of death) and then given to an immediate family member. When I was first told this I thought it was a bit morbid, but upon thinking further it began to dawn on me that for the close relatives it would be a form of confort.
In September 2008, Lynn Franklin scanned the Masteller Funeral Card for this site and then she and her husband Bob Sweeney forwarded the card to the SCHS and Museum for a permanent home.
In August 2014, Milly also sent us the Death Certificate for Susan Jane (Keeler) Masteller, wife of Thomas. It is linked to her entry above. Milly also notes a few errors on the certificate: Susan Jane's father John's last name is misspelled and her husband is listed as "John" instead of Thomas. Perhaps the entry was made under stress or perhaps his full name was "John Thomas" or "Thomas John". Also, one of the several versions of the surname found in local records--in this case, "Mosteller"--is entered on the document.

++Information from Barbara Delong Strong:
I have 14 relatives in Cherry Grove Cemetery:
John Keeler 1764-1849 is my 4th g grandfather and the father of
Susan Keeler Robbins 1804-1888 who is the spouse of W.J.(William) Robbins 1799-1876 who were the parents of
Joseph C Robbins 1834-1898 who was the father of
Alice May Robbins Diltz 1859-1914 whose spouse was Elias Willets Diltz 1865-1928.
Gearhart Fritz 1839-1918 was my great grandfather and his wife was (Amanda) Melissa Hess 1845-1909, the daughter of Levi Hess 1824-1898
Gearhart and Melissa were the parents of 11 children:
(Samuel) Ellis Fritz 1866-1948
Laura Fritz 1873-1925
(Lydia) Agnes Foust 1877-1952 whose spouse was Frederick J. Foust 1877-1952
and last is Willis Fritz 1882-1954
Here is an interesting piece of information:
Gearhart's son Herman was my grandfather and
his wife Hazel Diltz was the daughter of Elias and Alice (Robbins) Diltz. They are buried in Orangeville, PA.
Editor's Note: The "Hungarians"
My father was Allen E. Tilley. He was a native of Nordmont. His
family, the Botsfords, settled outside of Elk Lick, which is what
Nordmont was known as in the beginning, in 1827. Nordmont was Lower Elk
Lick, and the area where Cherry Grove sits was Upper Elk Lick, named for
the natural salt deposits that attracted large herds of elk in the
1800's. The Botsfords were one of two original settler families that
bought land from two men who broke through into the area in the early
1820's to tap the maple trees in the Cherry Grove area. The other
family was the Bostons.
I believe my father placed the plaque for the Hungarians at the Cherry Grove Cemetery
in the late '80's. I don't have the exact year. He said he always felt bad that the men lay there
in an unmarked area. They had died while employed to make the railroad
a reality, which benefitted the area immensely and they were not even
recognized in death, and this bothered him. So he poured the footer,
had the plaque made, and placed it there in their memory.
The story behind the Hungarians goes like this. There was a boarding
house in Nordmont. Some of the men who were not local and who were
working on the W and NB Railroad lived there. The Hungarians who died
were upstairs sleeping. There was a card game going on downstairs with
plenty of drinking. Apparently, a fight broke out, a kerosene lantern
was upset, and those downstairs were the only ones that got out.
Whether the ones upstairs who died were drinking earlier and were passed
out and didn't know the place was on fire is unknown. But they were
killed in the fire.
Anyway, the local citiens couldn't agree on how or where to bury the victims,
so they wrapped the bodies in blankets (there wasn't much left to bury) and placed them in one mass
grave in that section which was "Potter's Field", so to speak. Of course, since the cemetery grew over
the past 100 years, lots were sold all around the Hungarians, so that today they rest
surrounded by everyone else. If you look on the map inside the chapel
you can see the area marked off where they lie.
You can read more about the Cherry Grove area and its history in Allen E. Tilley's Cherry Grove Chapel: 1892-1992, written by my late father.
You can also see a set of pictures taken by Deb Wilson at the year 2007 Memorial Day Celebration at the Cherry Grove Chapel by clicking here: Memorial Day: Cherry Grove Chapel 2007.
** Editor's Note: Mary (Sones) Fiester, daughter of George Washington Sones and Ann Lowe, was born in 1813 in Muncy Creek Township. She married Benjamin Fiester, son of Jacob Fiester and Mary Robb, on November 7, 1833 in Muncy Creek [Source: Muncy Telegraph, November 12, 1833]. He was born on September 4, 1811 in Muncy Creek and died in 1875 in Buffalo, NY. They had seven children together.

**** Editor's Note: In October 2008, we received a touching query involving Catherine May, which we reproduce in part here in the interest of preserving the memory of a local personality who might otherwise be lost to time:
I would like to know if her house is occupied and by whom. Is the wood stove still around? The stove in the parlor? I would love to see the house and the town again, or to see people who may have known my "Poppop" (or even me). I know there was a family who had a farm down the road. They were the Hoffmans and my Poppop used to take us to “Hoff’s” farm to visit and ride horses.
My parents and Poppop had bought lots on the hill behind Mrs. May’s house. When I went to ask about what they planned to do with them, they told me that had sold them to someone without talking to me first in 1980! I was heartbroken.
It’s a bit of a drive from here and I wouldn’t want to barge in on anyone. I’ve tried to find out more information on the internet, but have been unsuccessful. My time at Mrs. May’s did a lot to shape my life and the kind of person I’ve become. I loved Mrs. May very much and she was the kindest, strongest woman. She and my Poppop taught me to love the outdoors, live simply, and to cherish the cast iron pans I inherited from Poppop.
I know the house is still there because you can see it on Google Earth. I so loved the house and sitting on the porch with Mrs. May and my "Nana". Any and all help will be greatly appreciated and can help me complete my family tree, too, since I could get some stories about my Nana and Poppop from the locals.
I thank you for anything you can do to help! It’s wonderful there are people like you keeping family history alive. I am presently working on putting together my family histories and recently “rescued” some photos from the 1800’s that my dad was ready to throw away!!!! They are my mom’s father as a baby, his mother, and his grandparents!

*@* Editor's Note: John Keeler, Sr. (1764-1849), son of Ebenezer Keeler (1721-1785) and Nancy
Ann (McNeal) Keeler (1739-1818), was born in Goshen, Orange County, NY and served in the Revolutionary War. There is actually a Pension Application on file. In fact, his descendants
campaigned into the twentieth century for an extension of that pension to one of his daughters, as indicated in the pension file records.
John was married twice, first to Elizabeth Smith (1766-1826), whom he married in Wallkill Township, Ulster County, NY, in 1795. After she died, he married Eleanor Wilson (1795-1844)
in 1833. She died in 1844. While John is buried at Cherry Grove Cemetery, as listed above, the resting places of his two wives are not known. It is likely that his first wife is buried either on
the family farm near Sugarloaf Township, Columbia County, PA or perhaps in one of the local cemeteries.
In addition to the three children of John and Elizabeth interred at Cherry Grove, there were other offspring of both
the first and second marriages. As listed in Ancestors of Douglas J. Weaver,
John and Elizabeth had twelve children altogether and John and Eleanor had two.
