Mertz Cemetery

Location:

East of Middleburg, Creek Bottom Ext., Franklin Twp.

History:

"LIEUTENANT NICHOLAS MERTZ (also Merts, Martz, etc.) was born on August 8th, 1748, and died on February 22, 1801, probably in ... what is today Franklin Township. He is buried in a private cemetery on the Wittenmeyer [today Zimmerman] farm in that township. He was a native of Hereford Township, Berks County, Pa., and came to Penn Township about 1789. In 1790, his family consisted of one male over and five under 16 years, and five females. In 1781, he was Second Lieutenant of the 1st Company, 2nd Battalion of the Berks County Militia." Charles A.
