OBITUARY John Wood

John Wood of 470 North Main Street, died Tuesday morning of Bright's disease and a hardening of the walls of the arteries, bringing on partial paralysis. His last illness continued for about six weeks. His sufferings increased rapidly during the past ten days, while his mental powers steadily declined. At the last, however, he departed without a struggle.

The deceased was born in Columbiana County, O., April 12, 1831. Most of his life had been spend in Crawford county. In 1854 he married Sarah C. Himebaugh of Venango who survives him, together with two sons, Emory W., class of 1879, Allegheny College, now of Albion College, Mich., and Vernon L. who resides on Dock Street. His home was at Venango 1854 - 1863, and Townville 1863 - 1874, since which time he had resided in this city.

Mr. Wood, was a miller by trade and a most industrious, hard working man. His entire life was a struggle against poverty and misfortune. Honest and generous almost to a fault and to frank to win save by the most tollsome methods, he never got beyond galling finanicial limitations. Deprived of early school advantages, such as are allowed to the present generation, he still had the instinct of a student and a desire and appreciatetion for knowledge and culture that would have made him a man of power had his boyhood been propitious.

For most of his life Mr. Wood was a member of the M. E. church and for some years a class leader. Though unassuming and somewhat reticent in religious as well as other matters, he greatly appreciated the truths and preaching of the gospel and so long as health permitted, was remarkably regular in church attendance. His was an exceptionally high sence of honor and faithfulness in all his obligations. He despised every form of deceit and untruthfulness, always insisting that moral integrity must be the first consideration in estimating his fellow men, whether among the high or low.

The deceased leaves a family and wide circle of friends who revere his memory not for what he accomplished or accumlated; not for his position or pretensions; not for his gifts or graces; but for the modest and substantial virtues of kindness, honestly, generosity, self denial and sincerity which always characterized his life.
