Nichols Family

FIRST GENERATION

1.         SAMUEL1 NICHOLS was born between 1800 and 1810, but the names of his parents and the place of his birth have yet to be discovered. In 1840 he was a resident of Hayfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in 1840, with his wife, four young sons, and one young daughterA  In the same year he was taxed on 50 acres and one (1) cow.B  In 1880 his son, John Wesley Nichols, said both of his parents were born in New York.C  In the same census, both parents of William Henry, eldest son of Samuel Nichols, are said to have been born in Connecticut.D  In 1900, John Wesley’s father is said to have been born in Massachusetts and his mother in Rhode Island.E  In the same census, William Henry’s parents were said to have been born in Connecticut.F  He died about 1847. The date and place of his burial is unknown. On June 21st, 1847, letters of administration on the Estate of Samuel Nichols, “late of Hayfield township, deceased, granted and issued to Edward A. Reynolds &c another of the Borough of Meadville. Bond taken for One hundred dollars, with John Reynolds and S. H. Reynolds as sureties. Inventory of real estate filed June 26, 1847.”G On the twelfth day of November, 1847, Edward A. Reynolds,

 

“...Administrator of all and singular the goods and chattels rights and credits which were of Samuel Nichols late of Hayfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania Decd who died intestate of the one part and Adam Lefevre of the same place of the other par Whereas the said Samuel Nichols in his life time became lawfully seized of in and to the following described piece or parcel of land with the appurtenances, situate in said Township viz three acres of land Bounded north by land of Harrison Church East by land of Jared Shattucks heirs, South by land of Daniel Williams and west by land of Ansel Knapp and the said Samuel being so seized died intestate after whose death to wil at an Orphan’s Court held at Meadville on the 12th day of August 1847 upon the petition of said Administrator praying the said Court to grant and order to make sale of the real estate of the said Samuel it was ordered by the said Court the real Estate of Said Decedent should be exposed to sale by public vendue or out cry for the payment of debt &c and the said Administrator make report thereof. In pursuance of said order the said Edward A. Reynolds Administrator after having given due and timely notice of the time and place of sale did on the 27th day of September 1847 expose the said premises to sale and sold the same to the said Adam Lefevre for the sum of Eighty one dollars he being the highest bidder and that the highest and best price bidden for the same which sale was confirmed by said court on the 12th day of Novr Inst. - and it was considered and adjudged by the said court that the same should be and remain firm and stable for ever.”H

 

 

He married about 1833 CATHARINE MAXWELL, born about 1800.I After the death of Samuel Nichols she married, second, probably _________  AMA. She may be the mother of the William H. Nichols, Samuel N. Nichols, and J. W. Nichols enumerated with her in the 1850 Census of Spring Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.J No record of her second marriage or of the date and place of her death and burial have been found.

 

“...About the relatives,” wrote Estella May (Nichols) Barr, “I do not know to much. My grandfather and grandmother on father’s side left Elmira N.Y. I guess before my father was born they and a Mr. & Mrs. Carter started west they were going to Michigan to live. Carters went on by my grandparents stopped at or near Meadville Penn. they cleared a place in the would and made a home there I have never seen any of them. Your Grandpa was the youngest of a large fami’y his father died when he was a baby. The older children were put out in homes as they used to do in those days but my father was to young to take away from his mother and she was quite well to do I guess. But she got married again and her husband so spent her money....” K

             7.     vi.  Salvador2 Nichols, born. Of him Estella May Nichols Barr  says, “Another brother was in the navy. He was home on a furlough and started away with a sum of money. They never heard from him again. They think he never got out of the county. His name was Salvador.K
