BRUNNER, HARZFIELD, SCHWENK posted by W. Mayberry on Tuesday, August 1, 2000

I'm apptempting to find the graves of Andreas/Andrew Schwenk (born 1795 and baptized at New Hanover Lutheran in Montgomery County,PA) and his wife Anna Harzfield (possibly Hartfield or Hatfield) Schwenk (born abt 1800). They were married at New Hanover Lutheran too. His parents Andreas & Maria Magdalena Schwenk also are buried at New Hanover. However, I can't find their graves ANYWHERE in Montgomery County. In 1850, Andrew, wife Anna, and their family resided in Douglas Township, Berks County, PA. Anna disappears from the census record by 1860. In 1860, Andrew resided with his daughter Mary Ann Schwenk Brunner's (husband Peter Brunner, shoemaker)family in Stochsburg, Berks County, PA. By 1870, Andrew is off the census record too. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

FICK, FRIES, MOYER posted by John Moyer on Friday, August 4, 2000

Clayton (Clayt) Monroe Fries and Mary (Mame) Catherine Moyer Clayt was born 28 Jan 1884 and died 19 Nov 1945. Mame was born 8 Nov 1884 and died 22 Aug 1965. Clayt Fries Mom and Dad started an ice cream business in 1886 in Reading on Chestnut St. above 10th . They also made candy in the winter months. In 1926 when his Dad retired Clayt managed the plant but sold the business to Dolly Madison Ice Cream of Philadelphia with the proviso that he couldn't do ice cream business for ten years. Clayt and Mame opened the 'Clayt Fries' Olde Tyme Ice Cream' company in the Spring of 1937 at 4213 Kutztown Rd., South Temple, PA. Seven workers were employed, with the plant foreman being LeRoy Fick, a relative to Clayt and Mame. The plant was built in the garage and was later expanded to provide more space as needed. The basement of the house was used for storing various supplies in production. A retail store was established on the front porch of the house, by enclosing it for year round use. Later, a retail store was added along the side of the plant facing the driveway and yard. There were always tables and chairs for inside seating. They never served any hot food. The old store on the front porch then became the office. After a few years of operation, Clayt established the 'Outdoor Ice Cream Garden' in the yard across the drive. This yard area had been a rose garden with flagstone walks, a goldfish pond and a large oak tree that was credited with being over 400 years old. Clayt called it the 'Wishing Oak' and had a small cement star placed in front. A sign on the tree said "stand on the star and make a wish", which was done by many people, especially the young toddlers that often came for ice cream with their parents. Clayt Fries introduced "Lick the Paddle" night, when he would sell soft ice cream (something not heard of in those days) direct from the freezer. It was one night a week, and the plant crew would work all evening. The freezer would turn out in 10 quart pails, and counter workers would line up along an open screened window. Soft ice cream was scooped into paper plates with large serving spoons, a small wooden spoon stuck in the the mound of ice cream, and the plate passed through the window to the customer. People would line up almost to the street waiting to be served. It was a very popular attraction. Compliments of George and Janice Lance of Etters, Pa.

STILGENBAUER posted by Julie Alcorn on Monday, August 7, 2000

Edward Elsworth Stilgenbauer is my great-great grandfather, born in Massillon, Ohio May 6, 1866. His mother was Mary Stilgenbauer, and Mary's parents were Peter Stilgenbauer (born 1819 in Wuerttenberg, Germany) and Mary Haubert (born 1822/1823 in Germany). Edward was adopted by his maternal grandparents, and thus carried the last name of Stilgenbauer throughout his life. I am looking for Edward's REAL FATHER. CHRIST, FREY, HERTZ, KOHLER, MARTIN, MOHR, MOORE, MOYER, MULLER, NEUKIRCH, SLOUCH posted by Diana Quinones on Friday, August 11, 2000

There may be more than one Conrad! My Conrad MOHR came to US age 22 on ship 'Lydia' in 1741. He settled first in Montgomery Co and is on the Colebrookdate Tax List for 1752. He married Margaretha KOHLER in 1747 at New Hanover Church. Three children born to them were baptised there: Johannes(John) born 5/14/1748 bapt 6/19/1748 Conrad born 1/29/1752 bapt 2/16/1752 Elizabeth born 4/22/1758 bapt 6/25/1758 Johann Jacob 1754 bapt at Falckner Swamp Lutheran in New HAnover, Montgomery Co. A Jacob MOHR married Rosina MULLER at Schwartzwald Church in Exeter on 12/26/1791. Another Jacob MOHR married Elizabeth FREY 4/5/1795 at New Hanover Church. I don't know if this is the same Jacob. Another son, George MOHR, my gr4grandfather, was born 3/8/1756 and baptized at St Josephs Hill Church in Pike Twp. A George MOHR married Anna Maria NEUKIRCH on 9/23/1789 at Schwartzwald Church. George MOHR had 8 children: Catharina, Samuel, Elias N., twins Isaac and Joseph, Suzanna, George N and Maria MOHR. His son, George N., married a Susanna CHRIST who died in 1829. He remarried a Phoebe MOYER and moved to Lycoming county. Conrad MOHR's will of 1807 lists his 6 sons and two daughters: John, Henry, Jacob, George, Conrad and Christian; Elizabeth (wife of Bernhard Windle) and Mary ELizabeth(dec'd) married Jesse Richards. A Henry MOHR born 2/1748 died 4/4/1822 is buried in St John's Hill Church Cemetery with his wife Anna Maria 2/22/1763-3/28/1835. I have not seen a Josiah as a son of my George MOHR. I did receive a copy of court petition paper listing a George MOORE, Robeson, who died in 4/3/1861, leaving a widow, Elizabeth, and adult children Josiah, Sarah (m MARTIN), Daniel, George, Nicholas, Jeremiah, Susanna (m SLOUCH) and Levi, a minor. A son John MOORE had died and his children were listed as grandchildren of George. I do not know if these are of the same MOHR family. Schwartzwald Church baptisms show that two of Conrad's sons also had a son named George: George Mohr, son of Johannes MOHR, was born 5/23/1799 and baptized 7/11/1799 sp Christina and David HERTZ. George MOHR son of Henrich MOHR was born 10/22/1789 and baptized 11/8/1791, no sponsor shown. Could these be your George who died 1861? Do you know the birthdate of your George MOORE? If I can sort all these MOHR/MOORE's out I will let you know. Please keep in touch.
