HAAS, MAURER posted by Michael Mowrer on Saturday, January 15, 2000

Though I think Haas is a common Germanic name, I believe the Maurers of Berks Co., Pa. were somehow linked to some of the Haas people. My probable immigrant ancestor Christian Maurer, who arrived America 1765 on ship Polly, may have lived in Cumru Twp., Berks Co. at one time. If not, other Maurers did. Bottom line: I'm very interested in Maurer-Haas links in Cumru Twp. or nearby, so keep me in mind if you find any such links in your line.

An American living near Heidelberg, Germany
(P.S. My ancestor prob. came from SW Germany, Alsace or Switzerland. Swiss indications are strong, so wherever jumping-off point to America was, original home was probably Switzerland.)

KRICK, MAURER posted by Michael Mowrer on Saturday, January 15, 2000

Krick and Maurer are occasionally intertwined in early Pennsylvania, if I recall correctly. My ancestor Christian Maurer sold two tracts of land in what is now Snyder Co., Pa. to a George Krick in 1805 if my memory serves me well, though it doesn't always.
Lots of Krick families in western Berks Co., over toward the Lancaster and Lebanon Co. line.
Don't know where the Kricks come from in Europe, though a good guess would be SW Germany, Alsace or Switzerland, where I'm pretty sure my Maurers came from, as well as most of the early immigrants to Pennsylvania.

HOCHSTETTLER, MILLER, MISHLER posted by Michael Mowrer on Saturday, January 15, 2000

Your information has Switzerland written all over it.
Miller can come from anywhere, but "Anneli" would be the Swiss diminuitive of Anna, I'm pretty sure, and I think Hochstettler is a Swiss name. Any indications they might be Mennonite or Amish? Christian and Abraham fit in well as names of Swiss origin, though they're found in Germany, too, I believe.
Doderea might be a phonetic rendering of "Dorothea (Dorothy).
If you have Mennonite or Amish origins, go directly to Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, Millstream Road, Lancaster, Pa. The Mennonites and Amish are rather well documented compared to the larger populations of Reformed and Lutheran.
good luck.

My relations go back to a Michael Maurer and Sophia Mourer who married about 1757 in Lehigh Co. PA. He was born about 1735 and she was born about 1737 in Berks Co PA (both). They had six children. Elizabeth Barbara, John Johannes, Maria Barbara, Anna Marie, Jacob Johann, and John. John Johannes married Elizabeth Sarah Stimmel and moved to Pickaway Co. Ohio. I am the 8th generation downline. John Johannes changed the spelling of the last name to Mowery after his move to Ohio. My grandfather, David Straus Mowrey changed the spelling to Mowrey in the early 20's. I am interested in persuing the lineage farther back to Germany, Austria or Switzerland. It seems funny that my father not really knowing that he was of good German heiritage married Mary Agnes Von Tesmar. Any information you can give me on the Maurer and Mourer lines would be greatly appreciated. I have a copy of the downline of my side which I can fax to you if you wish to have it. I haven't gotten around to setting up a lineage page yet. Thankyou very much. Robert

CONRAD, REICHELDERFER, SHUMAKER, STAPLETON, STEBLETON posted by Shandra Smith on Saturday, January 15, 2000

I am looking for more info about the family of John Stebleton who married Catherine Hagenbach. His father was Tobias Stebleton, son of Robert Stapleton.

I would also like to know more about the family of Henry Reichelderfer. He had a daughter, I believe, named Magdalena, who married Jacob Shumaker.

These families were all from Berks County, PA. Late 1700's/early 1800's. Members of these families remain in Berks County but a big number of these families moved west to Fairfield County, Ohio along the Zane Trail in the early 1800's.

My line moved and I would like some help with the Pennsylvania research.

REICHELDERFER, SCHUMACHER, STAPLETON, STEBELTON posted by Julie Noble on Saturday, January 15, 2000

The original immigrant was Robert Stapleton (1690-1775)who came to Berks County, PA, Tobias (1715-1805) was one of ten children of Robert and Anna Maria Turk(in).

Tobias' son Johannes (1736-1813) married Maria Magdalena Hagenbuch (1740-1805). Their children were Jacob, Barbara, John Jr. and Catharine who married Frederick J. Lutz.

Another son of Tobias was Jacob Stapleton (abt. 1748-1794). He married Maria Margaretha Reichelderfer. Their children were John (b. May 22, 1774 in Albany Twp., Berks Co., PA) Margaret (Twin to John who died shortly after childbirth) Susanna (b. Nov. 24, 1778), Maria Catharine (b. June 26, 1782, and Solomon, b. July 28, 1790 (all in Berks County, PA).

Maria Margaretha Reichelderfer was the daughter of Friederich Jacob Reichelderfer and Anna Christina Hagenbuch.

John Stapleton/Stebelton m. Mary Magdalena Schumacher in 1795 in Berks County, PA. On June 20, 1796 they had twins, David and Jacob. David Stebelton is my 3-G Grandfather. In 1797 John and possibly Magdalena traveled from Berks County to Fairfield County, OH on horseback with others who were moving west. Jacob Schumacher and Elizabeth Magdalena Reichelderfer (Magdalena's parents) also went to Fairfield/Pickaway County either in the same group or shortly thereafter.

Jacob Schumachers parents were John Geroge Schumacher and Anna Barbara Rittenhouse. Elizabeth Magdalena Reichelderfer's parents were John Heinrich Reichelderfer and Maria Catherina Liebengut/Liebegutgin/Liebenguth.

There is lots more on the PA Stapletons/Stebeltons. Try the Rootsweb Stapleton Board.

Which family are you from? If you have more specific questions, I will try to answer them if you contact me directly.

SAMMET, SUMMIT, SUMMITT posted by Glen Summit on Saturday, January 15, 2000

HELLO, CAN ANYONE HELP ME CONNECT THE INDIVIDUALS LISTED BELOW? GLEN SUMMIT, BOSTON MASS

Sept 10, 1753 - "Jacob Sammit" arrives in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania on the Ship Beulah, captained by _____ Richey from Rotterdam, last from Cowes, England. Cowes is on the Isle of Wight which lies just two miles off the southeastern coast of England, across a narrow stretch of water called the Solent. The original notation is in German: "Sept. 10, 1753 Schiff Beulah, Capitain Richey, von Rotterdam uber Cowes."

April 27, 1755 - "Early Records of the First Reformed Church of Philadelphia; Volume 1; 1748-1780" Christian Sammet m. Maria Stahler, on April 27, 1755. It is important to know that Berks County was formed from Philadelphia County in 1752, just the year before Jacob arrived at Philadelphia. Point being this is the same locale that Christian Sammet married Maria Stahlern in 1755, I believe this to be a connection between the two individuals.
