Groves, Edward R.
Edward R. GROVES, of
Kaylor, son of the late George and Sara A. (MORGAN)
GROVES, died at his home in Kaylor, Saturday
evening, December 8, 1934, after an illness of
several weeks. He was born at Cowansville on May 9,
1869, being 66 years of age at his death.
Mr. GROVES was a
well-known and highly respected citizen in the
community in which he lived. He served as tax
collector for Brady's Bend township for a number of
years.
Surviving are his widow,
Mrs. Margaret MEYBIN GROVES, and the following
children, Mrs. Paul C. CROW, Pasadena, Calif., Helen
GROVES, of New York; Mary Evelyn, John M. and Nelson
GROVES all at home; two sisters, Mrs. Sadie POOLE of
Kaylor, and Mrs. Ella PAINTER of Birdville; and one
brother, Charles GROVES of Kaylor.
Funeral services will be
held at his late home on Tuesday at 2 pm., in charge
of Rev. H. T. Chisholm, pastor of the Presbyterian
church at East Brady, and Rev. Frampton of Kaylor.
Interment will be made in the Brady's Bend cemetery.

John Chambers HARMON, of East Brady RD 1, a farmer
of Sugarcreek township, Armstrong county,
practically all his life, died Friday, February 9,
1940, at 6:45 pm at the home of his daughter, Mrs.
Jessie BERNARD, East Brady RD 1.
He was aged 75
years, having been born Jan. 1, 1865, in Sugarcreek
township, the son of John and Caroline SWARTZLANDER
HARMON.
His wife Sarah BURFORD HARMON, died in
1930.
Survivors include the following children:
Mrs. BERNARD, East Brady RD 1; Mrs. Harry
PORTERFIELD, Ford City; Mrs. Anna WELCH, Mrs. J. A.

in St. Paul's Reformed church, Sugarcreek township,
of which the deceased was a member. Rev. John

Mrs. Margaret
“Kate” Moore Harman, 75, 2691 Ridge Road, S.E., died
of heart ailment at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday (Aug 17, 1988)
in St. Joseph Riverside Hospital.
She was born July
30, 1913, in Apollo, Pa. the daughter of Charles E.
and Alice Mae Steel Moore.
Her husband, Si D. Harman,
died Oct 28, 1970.
Before retiring in 1973, Mrs.
Harman was employed as a nursing assistant at Trumbull
Memorial Hospital. She formerly worked for Mullins Manufacturing
Co. for 19 years.
Survivors include a step-daughter,
June Gobel of Parkersburg, W.VA; five grandchildren;
and four great-grandchildren. Seven brothers and four
sisters preceded her in death.
The funeral will
be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Pine Knoll Cemetery.
Friends may
call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Twp., suffered a fatal coronary occlusion yesterday
morning at 1:20 in the home of her son, Eugene
Hause, 366 Washington St., Leechburg.
Mrs. Hause
had been with her son, recuperating from recent
surgery at Woman's Hospital, Pittsburgh.
Born in
Lucesco May 16, 1892, she was the daughter of the
late Abraham and Molly Tonks Shuster.
Mr. Hause
is a retired coal miner.
She had resided in
Allegheny Twp. all her life and was long a member of
the Allegheny United Presbyterian Church.
Besides
her husband, she leaves seven children: John, Los
Angeles, Calif.; Eugene, Leechburg; Mrs. James
(Anna) Jardine, Shuster Heights; Glenn, Freeport;
Robert, Allegheny Twp.; Mrs. Clell (Eleanor)
Hamilton, West Leechburg; Mrs. Wesley (Helen) Stull,
Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Miss Lillian Shuster,

Henry S. Hause, 91, of
Allegheny Township, died yesterday (Oct. 12, 1978)
at 11:55 a.m. in the home of his son Robert K. of
Brackenridge, after a two-year illness.
The lifelong area resident
was born in Glenshaw, Oct. 18, 1886, to John H. and
Mary Ruttenbusch Hause.
An area coal miner for 50
years, Mr. Hause retired in 1951 from the Hicks Coal
Co., Butler Junction.
Besides his son, Robert,
he is survived by two other sons: John H. of
Beaumont, Calif., and Eugene H. of Leechburg; three
daughters: Mrs. James (Anna) Jardine of Sarver, Mrs.
Clell (Eleanor) Hamilton of West Leechburg and Mrs.
Howard W. (Helen) Stull of Utica, Mich.; 15
grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
His wife, Anna H. Hause,
died in 1960; two sons: William G. in 1943 and Glenn
K. in 1960; two brothers and two sisters also
preceded him in death.
Friends will be received
tonight from 7 to 9 and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7
to 9 p.m. in the Richard L. Redmond Funeral Home,
Sixth at High, Freeport, where the Rev. John W.
Foester, pastor of the Freeport United Presbyterian
Church, will conduct a service Sunday at 2 p.m.
Burial will be in Brookland Cemetery, Allegheny

Hause, John
John Hause, mine foreman
at the Lucesco Coal Co. mine across the river was
struck by the Kittanning accommodation on the Valley
road last Saturday, Nov. 29, and received injuries
that proved fatal. He was crossing the track to an
engine taking coal on the siding and the noise of
the coal running down the chute together with the
escaping steam prevented his hearing the approach of
the train. He was struck on the side and his ribs
crushed in. He was removed to his home in the Clow
house, corner First and High streets, where he died
within an hour. He leaves a wife and five children,
the eldest a son aged 17, who will have to bear the
burden of supporting the family. The Lucesco Coal
Co. paid all the expense attending his death and
funeral. He was born in Madison Twp., this county,
July 29, 1868, and was a sober industrious man. The
family have the sympathy of the entire community in
their trouble.

Aged Wife Passes.
After having lived together
for over 60 years, Mr. and Mrs. John M. HAWK have been
seperated by death which claimed Mrs. HAWK, Sunday.
She was taken ill last Friday with pneumonia and died
Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Hawk were married November 8, 1868,
and were parents of 18 children, 13 of whom survive.

Funeral services for Dr.
Mervine E. HAWK, Kittanning physician who died in
his North Jefferson street home on Saturday evening,
were held in the Montgomery chapel on Tuesday
afternoon at 2 o'clock. The services were in charge
of Rev. W. K. Morgan, pastor of the First Baptist
church, assisted by Rev. John WAUGAMAN, pastor of
Franklin Union Baptist church of Worthington, a
nephew of Dr. HAWK.
Burial was made in the
Montgomeryville cemetery. Six nephews, Craig
SIMPSON, John RICHARDS, Mort HAWK, Hays MCDONALD
Jr., Stanley HAWK and John WAUGAMAN acted as body
bearers.

Hawk, Mervine E., Dr.
Death came suddenly to
Dr. Mervine E. HAWK, well known Kitttanning
osteopath, at his home at 150 North Jefferson street
on Saturday evening, February 2, 1946, at 7:30
o'clock.
Dr. HAWK had not been in
good health for almost a year, but his condition
appeared to be improved. He and Mrs. HAWK had
planned a trip to Florida in March.
Dr. HAWK was born in
North Buffalo township on July 6, 1886, a son of the
late John M. and Ann (BOWSER) HAWK.
A graduate of the Los
Angeles School of Osteopathy in 1912, Dr. HAWK
practiced his profession in Augusta, Me., for six
years. He came to Kittanning in 1922, where he has
since maintained an office.
Surviving are his wife,
Mrs. Mabel HAWK; a daughter, Mrs. Jane H. DALLAS, of
Detroit, Mich.; a son, John M. HAWK of Wasco,
Calif., and two grandchildren.
Also surviving are the
following brothers and sisters: Ben S. HAWK and Mrs.
Hays MCDONALD of Kittanning; Dr. M. C. HAWK and Mrs.
Grace ALBRIGHT of Chicago, Ill.; William E. HAWK,

Miss Annie HEIDRICK, aged 83
years, died suddenly at her home near Cowansville,
Wednesday, March 30, 1938, at 5 pm while sitting in
a chair in her home. She was in her usual health.
Surviving her are three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth
BEILSTEIN, Butler; Mrs. Margaret BOLTZ, East Brady
RD 1; and Miss Louisa HEIDRICK at home; one brother,
Henry HEIDRICK, Cowansville RD 1.
She was a
lifelong member of the Brady's Bend Lutheran church.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 1,

Mrs. Emma HEIDRICK (nee BIPPUS), 66
died at her residence near Cowansville at 10:15
o'clock Monday morning, September 28, 1936,
following an illness of about five months.
Born
in Butler county January 26, 1870, Mrs. HEIDRICK had
in later life enjoyed a large circle of friends.
She is survived by her husband, H. A. HEIDRICK; two
children, Estella Viola, wife of Frank CUPP, and
John A. HEIDRICK, both of Kittanning RD 3, as well
as one grandchild, Madeline Mae HEIDRICK, and one
sister, Mrs. Lydia FINDLEY, of Butler.
Mrs.
HEIDRICK was a faithful member of the Cowansville
Presbyterian church, where the pastor, Rev. Francis
B. Marks, will conduct funeral services at 2:30
o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Burial will take place
in the adjoining cemetery.

MRS. SARAH BELLE HENRY
Mrs. Sarah Bell Henry, wife of Wilson J. Henry, one
of the best loved women in this community died at her
home in North Fourth Street, Sunday at 12:30. Mrs. Henry
had not been in good health for a number of years but
was not considered serious until a short time ago and
the news of her death was a shock to her many friends.
Mrs. Henry was born March 14, 1865 at Cochrans Mills,
a daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth Schall. She came
to Apollo forty years ago and has resided here ever
since. She was united in marriage with Wilson T. Henry
February 10, 1889. Mrs. Henry has had an active and
useful life. Her many acts of kindness and good deees
[sic] endeared her to all. She was an ardent worker
in the Lutheran Church and for years served as President
of the Working Circle. She was also a member of the
Woman’s Club, Eastern Star, W. R. C. and P. H. C. Funeral
services were held at the late residence Wednesday afternoon
at 2 o’clock, in charge of her pastor, Rev. M. L. Clare
assisted by Rev. Moser and Rev. Leroy Louther. Surviving
are her husband and three children, Dr. Edgar Henry,
of Coroapolis; Fred Henry, of Blairsville, and Mrs.
Lenore Kimmel, at home, also her aged mother and the
following brothers and sisters: A. P. and R. E. Schall,
of Vandergrift; Mrs. J. S. Lafferty, of Latrobe; Mrs.
H. W. McIlwain, of Canton; H. L. Schall and Mrs. H.
B. Lemmon, of Massilon, Ohio, and Mrs. H. D. Lockard,
of Avonmore.
Adding to the sorrow of the family,
the aged mother of Mrs. Henry, Mrs. Elizabeth Schall,
who is in the 88th year of her age, accidentally fell
down a flight of stairs at the Henry home Wednesday
morning and suffered serious injuries. On account of
her advanced age her recovery is doubtful.

God has prepared for all those who faithfully serve
Him. She kept that faith and joined the loved ones
gone before. She was sick but a short time and her
death came as a shock to all who knew her. Mrs.
Henry was born Dec. 17, 1861, in Armstrong county,
near Kittanning, Pa., a daughter of Sloan and Jane
Cochran. On Sept. 25, 1888, she was united in
marriage to George Henry of Monroe township. Mr.
Henry preceded her in death three years ago. One
son, Jay, died in 1918. Mrs. Henry is survived by
the following children: Mrs. Anna Milliner [sic] who
lives on the old home where Mrs. Henry died. Alva,
also of Monroe township; Mrs. Goldie Servey and Mrs.
Ida George, of Limestone township; Marion, of
Harmony, and Woods, of New Kensington. She leaves 26
grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. On Sept.
25, 1938, Mr. and Mrs. Henry celebrated their golden
wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Henry lived all their married
life in Clarion county. Funeral services were held
at her home Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev.
Powell, of the Church of God, Clarion, and interment
was made in the family plot in Reidsburg cemetery
under the direction of Fred Jenkins of Clarion.
Pallbearers were: D. V. Fox, Leslie Henry, Paul
McClune, Robert Curll, Jay Bryant; and Harry V.
Curll.

Mrs. Tillie Henry of Monroe township, Clarion
county, who died January 8, 1944, following a long
illness, were held in the late home Tuesday
afternoon with Rev. N. K. Powell officiating. Burial

Mrs. Henry

May 14.-Mrs. Margaret (YINGST) HEPLER, wife of Charles
HEPLER, died at her home on Monday morning, May 14,
1945, at 4:20 o'clock from a heart attack. Mrs. HEPLER
had attended services in the Lutheran church on Sunday
morning. She became ill about 10 o'clock on Sunday evening.
Mrs. HEPLER is survived by seven daughters, Mrs. Arthur
STEWART, Kittanning RD 3; Mrs. Hazel STOUFFER, Mrs.
John GEORGE, Mrs. Robert CLAYPOOLE, and Mrs. Wade GEORGE.
all of Worthington; Mrs. Clifford BOWSER, Evans City
and Miss Betty June HEPLER, at home; two sons, David
HEPLER, Tarentum and Homer HEPLER, serving with the
U. S. Navy in the Pacific.
Also surviving are seven
sisters and four brothers, Mrs. William ALTMAN, Cabot;
Mrs. Ida STEWART, Tarentum; Mrs. George NEYMAN, Earlsboro,
Okla.; Mrs. Jared MEEKER, Craigsville; Mrs. Gilbert
EKAS and Mrs. James ALTMAN of West Winfield; Mrs Etta
HUTTON, Freeport; John and Claude YINGST of Tarentum;
Harry YINGST of California and Dale YINGST of Philadelphia.
There are 22 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren
surviving.
Friends are being received in the family
home. Funeral services will be held in Worthington Lutheran
church, with Rev. Charles T. Schlotter officiating,
on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be made
in the church cemetery.

Hepler, David
The venerable David HEPLER, of Sugarcreek township,
was instantly killed on the P. R. R. tracks, near Phillipston,
last Thursday afternoon, April 10th.
Mr. HEPLER left
his home early that afternoon to go to East Brady for
medicine for his wife, and it was while returning home
along the railroad that he lost his life. When hit by
the locomotive he was hurled for some distance to one
side of the track, and when the body was examined it
was found that death had resulted instantly.
Deceased
was in the 84th year of his age and leaves his wife
and the following children: J. A. HEPLER, at home; Mrs.
Lizzie WILES, who with her husband but recently returned
from California; Scott, of Sugarcreek township; Wallace,
of DuBois; Abraham and Addison, of Rimersburg.

o'clock.
He was a member of St.
Paul's Reformed church and of Activity lodge No. 715
Odd Fellows.
Surviving are four
daughters, Mrs. Bertha LOPP of Bell, Calif.; Mrs.
Mamie ALTVATER, Bellevue; Mrs. L. H. MCCAMEY,
Bradford, and Miss Cora HEPLER at home; two sons, A.

Hepler, Howard M.
Howard M. HEPLER, 22,
of Kaylor, died Saturday morning, August 23, at 11 o'clock,
in Butler Memorial Hospital, after a three weeks' illness
with pneumonia.
He was born in Bradys Bend township
February 28, 1919, the son of David Lee and Bernice
KAMERER HEPLER, and spent his entire life in the vicinity
of Kaylor. He was an employee of the Pullman Standard
Car Company of Butler and a member of the Mt. Pleasant
English Luthern church.
He is survived, in addition
to his parents, by a brother Jackie, at home, and a
sister, Mrs. Norman RAUSCHENBERGER of Butler.
Funeral
services were to be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock,
DST, from the late home, with Rev. MARBURGER, his pastor,
in charge, assisted by Rev. STECKLE of the Christian
and Missionary Alliance church, East Brady.
Interment
was to follow in the Mt. Pleasant Luthern cemetery.
Arrangements were in charge of the Stewart Funeral Home,
East Brady.

MRS HULDA
WALTERS HEPLER, aged 83 years, formerly of Sarver, died
at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. O. COOPER, at Vandergrift,
Saturday, December 1, 1928, of pneumonia. Services were
held in St. Paul's Lutheran church, Sarver, Tuesday,
4th inst., interment in adjoining cemetery.
At the
time of Mrs. HEPLER's death her husband, Wm. HEPLER,
aged 84 years, a Civil War veteran, was sick in bed.
He died Wednesday, December 5, 1928, and was laid to
rest beside his wife the following Friday.

of the Free Gospel Mission of Vandergirft, Burial
will be in an adjoining cemetery.

Vandergrift, four days after the death of his wife,
Mrs. Hulda HEPLER, 83. Both had been taken ill of pneumonia
at the same time. HEPLER was a resident of the Sarver
district and a veteran of the Civil War. Mrs. and Mrs.
HEPLER had gone to Vandergrift to spend the winter with
their daughter, Mrs. E. O. COOPER. Other survivors are
two sons, Charles of Worthington and John of Glassmere.
Funeral services will be held in the Lutheran Church
at Sarver Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock and burial will

Oldest Citizens is Taken by Death
Mrs. S. F. Hildebrand
Died at New Kensington After An Illness of a Few Hours
Mrs. Isabel Ament Hildebrand, 77 years old, wife of
S. F. Hildebrand, died at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Elizabeth Welsh, Valley Heights, New Kensington,
at 2:15 o’clock Wednesday morning, July 21, after an
illness of two hours. Death was due to a heart attack.
Mrs. Hildebrand was one of the oldest citizens of Apollo.
She was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church of
Apollo, and took an active interest in all the activities
of the church until her death.
She was the daughter
of George and Hanna Ament, pioneer settlers of North
Washington, where she was born, September 17, 1849.
She came to Apollo a short time after marriage and resided
on the Old Hildebrand farm, where the Kiski Valley Fair
grounds are now located. In 1906 the family moved to
Armstrong avenue where she had resided since.
Mrs.
Hildebrand is survived by Mrs. Elizabeth Welsh, of New
Kensington, Mrs. Bruce Coulter, of Vandergrift, Mrs.
Edith Zimmerman, of this place, B. L. Hildebrand of
Wilkinsburg, and E. W. and C. C. Hildebrand, Apollo.
Also 14 grand children and 2 great-grand children and
the following brothers and sisters survive: Mrs. Jane
McLaughlin, of Pitcairn; Mrs. Martha Neill, of Williamstown,
W. Va.; Mrs. W. W. Hill, of Apollo; Wm. Ament, of Vandergrift
and E. E. Ament, of Wilkinsburg.
The remains were
brought to her home at this place and funeral services
were conducted in the First Lutheran Church, Saturday
afternoon at 2:30, conducted by her pastor, Rev. M.
L. Clare, assisted by Rev. George Lauffer, of Altoona,
a nephew of the deceased. Interment followed in the
Apollo cemetery.

Mrs. Charles Herbert
HILES (nee Savilla HARMON) passed away in the Butler
Memorial Hospital at 2:35 am Thursday, March 19,
1936. Born in Sugarcreek township, Armstrong county
on July 30, 1895, she was aged 40 years, seven
months, and 20 days.
From the time she was
fifteen years of age Mrs. HILES was a loyal member
of St. Paul's Reformed congregation of the Sugar
Creek charge. The position filled by Mrs. HILES in
life was by one who realized that as a follower of
Christ she must be loyal not only to Him but through
Him loyal to those around her. She was a devoted
daughter, wife and mother at all times, She will be
missed mostly by those who knew her best.
Her infant son preceded
her in death two weeks ago. Surviving to mourn her
loss are the follwing: her husband, Charles Hubert
HILES Jr., two daughters, Helen Maxine and Margery
Savilla; two sons, William Jack and James Hubert;
her father, J. C. Harmon, four sisters, Mrs. M. A.
BERNARD, Mrs. Harry PORTERFIELD, Mrs. Anna WELSCH,
and Mrs. J. A. RAY; also one brother, J. F. HARMON.
Funeral services will be
held in St. Paul's Reformed church, located on the
Chicora-Kittanning road on Sunday afternoon, March
22 at 2:30 o'clock in charge of the pastor, Rev. R.
D. Althouse. Burial will be made in the cemetery
adjoining the church.

One brother, Eli WOLFORD, of the state of Morrisey,
of Buffalo, N.Y., and three grandchildren also
survive.
She was a member of St. Paul's Reformed
church, Sugarcreek township, where services will be
conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in charge of
her pastor, the Rev. R. D. Althouse. Burial will be

Mrs Lavina Butler Jewart, 98, died at 1:05 pm Wednesday
Nov. 11, 1953 in her Dayton home. She had been
a resident of Dayton for 81 years. She was born July
2, 1855 in Wayne Twp., a daughter of Jacob and Sarah
(Delp) Houser. She married twice, both of her
husbands preceded her in death. Survivors include four
daughters and two sons: Mrs A. L. Hankey (Maude) of
Cauyahoga Falls, OH, Charles A. Butler of Falls River,
MA, Estella S. Butler, at home, Mrs Arthur Turner (Cora) of
Grove City, Mrs. R. H. Heilman (Olive) of Pittsburgh,
and Clair C. Butler of New Castle. Two other sons
preceded her in death. Also surviving are 33 grandchildren,
27 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren.
She was a member of Glade Run Presbyterian Church. Friends
will be received in Wadding Funeral home where services
will be held at 2 pm Friday in charge of Rev. T. R.
R. Stull. Burial will be made in Concord Cemetery.
