Captain Bateman was a member of the 310th Fighter Bomber Squadron, US Air Force. He was listed as Missing in Action while participating in aerial support over Korea and presumed dead on October 29, 1952.

For his leadership and valor, Captain Bateman was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Hear
