In the city of Lisbon, Portugal lived a merchant Joseph Silvara, with two sons Joseph and Manuel. It was at the time of Napoleon Wars, and Joseph engaged passage for his sons on a boat to America. The boys were eighteen and twenty years old at the time.

Josef was placed on a boat to the South. Manuel landed in Pennsylvania and learned the furriers trade. In time he accumulated enough money to take up a grant of land in Northeast Pennsylvania, where he established his home. He married Janet Marsh a niece of Robert Morris, in 1819. They reared a family of seven sons and three daughters.

John was the fourth son of Manuel and Janet. He was married to Sarah Bixby of New York (my note: actually Beaver Meadows, Tuscarora Township, Bradford County.) To this union were born two sons, Charles and LaBarr. John was drowned in a spring flood while moving logs. His widow married Isaac Sones, and they her brother Charles Bixby and his wife Emily moved to Iowa. Her two sons moved to Iowa with them. LaBarr made his home with the Bixby’s. The Bixby’s lived in Liberty Center and later moved to Des Moines, where LaBarr grew up and became a lawyer and later a Police Judge in Des Moines. LaBarr never married.

Isaac and Sarah moved to a farm West of Norwood. They had two children.  The girl died when she was sixteen. Ira grew to manhood and married Lucy Mills.

In 1882, Charles, son of John Sylvara and Sarah Bixby, married Lucinda Evaline Haltom, daughter of Martin Tillman Haltom and Elizabeth Elsome Randall. Martin was born in North Carolina and moved to Indiana, where he married Elizabeth Elsome Randall in 1853. Later, they moved to Iowa where they raised nine daughters and one son. Evaline was the next to the youngest in this family.

Editor's Note: In January 2005, Vickie Sylvara provided the following information from The History of the Haltom Family by Patrick R. Pearsey (1999):

Rachel Haltom was born about 1810 to Joseph and Mary (Randle) Haltom. Rachel Haltom gave birth to her only child in 1825 in Montgomery County, N.C. named Martin Tillman Haltom. She never married the father. Martin is sometimes referred to as John Tillman Haltom and it is likely that his father was John Tillman, who lived in Montgomery County and was born about 1785. He was a married man at the time. About 1826, according to a descendant, Rachel and her son left Montgomery County with her sister Sarah Hicks' family. The party of settlers travelled to Morgan township of Owen County, Indiana.

In 1853, Rachel Haltom and her son Martin's family left via covered wagon for Iowa. They settled in Clarke County, Iowa. Rachel Haltom's grave is not found in the Walker Cemetery of Lucas County, Iowa where Martin T. Haltom and his family are buried. It's possible the Rachel "Halsom" who died in Jackson township of Clay County, Indiana, on November 21, 1887 is our Rachel. She was aged 80 according to the death record.

Martin Tillman Haltom was born January 5, 1825 in Montgomery County, North Carolina to Rachel Haltom. Married September 9, 1847 to Elizabeth Elsome Randall (Owen County, In.), born January 2, 1824 in Kentucky. Martin was an only child. In Owen County, Martin only attended school for 4 months. He lived with his mother and they had only one book in their home, which was the Holy Bible. Martin grew up to teach school in Owen County.

Martin entered 70 acres in Morgan township of Owen Co. Indiana, April 1849. When the family decided to move to Iowa, Martin sold this land on December 11, 1852. He and Elizabeth and their three little girls left Owen County in a covered wagon and one team.

Martin settled in Clarke County, Iowa. Martin was a staunch Democrat and almost was elected to the Iowa legislature from his district. He served as a Justice of the Peace there and as township assessor.

Martin Haltom was a Baptist minister. His wife was a Presybterian originally, joining the Missionary Baptist Church upon coming to Iowa. The children walked two miles to church. A story told by one of his children described a wagon trip to church one morning when Martin had been baptized. He put the children in the back of the wagon and as it had been raining, Otter Creek was high when they crossed. The children thought they would be drowned when the water came up in the wagon box but they made it across all right.

Martin died of a stroke on April 10, 1882 in Clarke County. Wife Elizabeth died on March 4, 1880 of consumption. Both are buried in the Walker Cemetery, in Lucas County, Iowa, just across the county line.

Grave Marker for Charles and Evaline (Haltom) Sylvara

Evaline and Charles were married December 30, 1882. They took a claim near Greeley, Nebraska, along with his mother and younger half-brother, Ira Sones, son of Isaac Sones and Sarah Bixby. After proving up on their claim, they moved back to Iowa. Later, Charles and Evaline and their family moved back to Nebraska. They sold their claim and again returned to Iowa where they bought a farm west of Lucas and moved to the farm in 1894. They lived on this farm until 1946, at this time the retired to live the rest of their lives in Chariton. They had nine children, Three died in infancy. Perry, Ira, Golda, Roy, John and Richard grew up on the farm west of Lucas and all attended the Lucas School. Perry, Ira and Roy were all born in Greeley County, Nebraska.

Perry, the oldest graduated from Lucas High School and taught for several years in the rural schools of this area. He graduated from Pella Central College and became a Baptist minister. He took his Seminary work at Kansas City and Forth Worth. He married Leona Watts from Villisca, Iowa. They were the parents of five children.

MONTEZUMA – The Rev. Roy O Silvara, (should be Perry O. Silvara) 87, a retired Baptist minister who had been a pastor of churches for 50 years, died Thursday at Halsey Hall, the Kansas Soldiers Home hospital. He had lived at Montezuma, with a daughter, in recent years. (He died April 22, 1971)

 Mr Silvara was born November 26, 1883, in Greeley Co NE, and grew up in Lucas Co IA. He and Miss Leona Watt were married September 1, 1906, (Marriage application and family records have married September 01, 1908) at Villisca, IA. He attended Central Seminary in Kansas City and then attended Southwestern Central Seminary in Kansas City, and then attended Southwestern Theological Seminary at Forth Worth TX.

 Besides serving various churches for 50 years Mr Silvara also was secretary of the NE Baptist Convention for three years. Mrs Sylvara’s death was August 28, 1953. Mr Silvara was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Webb City MO.

 Survivors include three sons, Melvin of Orville, CA; Raymond of Uniontown and Lowell of Independence, MO: two daughters, Mrs Jim (Harriet) Housman of Wichita and Mrs Farrell (Marguerite) Birkes, of Montezuma; a sister, Miss Golda of Chariton, IA: three brothers, Roy and Richard of Chariton, IA, and John of Yuma, AZ: 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

 The funeral service has been scheduled for 10 am, Monday at Villisca. IA, with burial there. The Hulpieu-Swaim Funeral Home of Dodge City will be in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Silvara was born November 26, 1883, in Greeley Co NE. He was a graduate of Central University in IA, and Central Seminary, Kansas City, MO, and received his Masters Degree in Religious Education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX.
Mr. Silvara pastured in Boonville, MO, and Webb City. He served three years as associate secretary to the NE Baptist Convention. For the last few years, he had made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Birkes, Montezuma, KS.
Other survivors include another daughter, Mrs. Harriet Housman, Columbus, KS : three sons, Lowell Silvara, Independence, MO, Melvin Silvara, Oroville, CA, and Raymond Silvara, Uniontown, KS, and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 10am Monday at Villisca, IA, under direction of the Wolfe Funeral Home.

Born September 22, 1887, in Howard Co, Mrs. Silvara can to Webb City in 1907. She moved to Brownsville about six years ago to make her home with a nephew, William Newcomm Sr. her husband, the Rev Perry Silvara, a Baptist minister, preceded her in death.
The body is being returned to Webb City for services and burial under the direction of the Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home.

MRS IRA SYLVARA

In the death of Mrs. Ira Sylvara, one mile north of Medora, August 5,1918, a home is saddened and broken up by the mother and wife being taken away, leaving 5 children.
Grace Rowland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Rowland, of Bartlett, Nebraska, was born in Bartlett, July 18, 1888, and died in her home north of Medora, Iowa, August 5, 1918, having lived in this present world thirty years and seventeen days. She was united in marriage to Ira Sylvara, January 19, 1910. God blessed this union with five children, all living, with their father to mourn the loss of wife and mother. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. R Rowland, and three sisters, Mrs. Jesse Herston, I. Keptinger, and Ethel Meese, all of Erickson, Nebraska. They were all present with their husbands at the funeral, which was held August 8th at the M. E. church in Medora.
The funeral was attended by a houseful of sympathizing friends and was conducted by the pastor, E. W. Bates. His text was “I know whom I have believed.” Interment was made in the beautiful New Virginia cemetery.
Mrs. Sylvara was converted at the age of seventeen years and identified herself with the Christian church at Bartlett, Nebraska, and continued to be such until death. The entire community sympathizes with the husband and motherless children in this bereavement.

Golda graduated from Drake University and taught school for forty-seven years. Many of these were in the Chariton Junior High School.

Roy, the fourth child, was a farmer. He married Kate Storm. They were the parents of six children.

John, a rancher in California married Louella Herndon from Woodburn, Iowa. They lived most of their lives in California. They had two children.

Richard was the youngest child of Charles and Evaline Sylvara. He was a farmer. He was a father of five children.

His headstone in the old Sonestown Cemetery records 1830 son of Emanuel and Jeanete Silvara.  In the Civil War era, John Silvara operated a store in Sonestown.

LaBarre Isaac Silvara of Des Moines, Iowa, died December 5, 1933 in a hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

Mr. Silvara was a son of the late John and Sarah E. (Bixby) Silvara.

He was born on a farm in Spring Hill, Tuscarora township, Bradford county, January 8, 1857, and there for was 76 years, 10 months and 27 days old.

When he was a small boy his parents moved to Sonestown, Sullivan County, where his father was accidentally drowned in Muncy creek. John Silvaras’s body was buried in the old cemetery at Sonestown.

His mother later married Isaac Sones and moved to Iowa where they made their home.

After moving to Iowa, LaBarre Silvara made his home with his uncle, Charles Bixby, until he became old enough to earn his own living. He received his early education in the country schools and after teaching for several years he entered Drake University, where he graduated, and was admitted to the bar for the practice of law.

For many years he served the people of Des Moines, Iowa as police court judge. Growing tired of politics he entered the business world and his activities carried him into many states.

It was easy for him to make friends, many of whom remained steadfast until his death. He was a man of lofty ideals and for these reasons he suffered many hardships. Quoting from his home paper " It fell to his choice to remain unmarried and therefore he leaves behind no broken family circle. His last years were lived in private, away from the masses."

One brother, Charles O. Silvara and one half-brother Isaac Sones of Liberty Center, Iowa survive him.

Funeral services were held at the United Brethren church of Norwood, Iowa, Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. Perry O. Silvara, of Webb City, Mo, a nephew, officiated, assisted by Rev. Watts of Norwood.

Interment was made in the Fletcher cemetery beside his mother, Mrs. Sarah E. Sones.

LaBarre Silvara was a nephew of the late Benjamin Sylvara of this place.

Charles O’Dell Sylvara

      Charles Odell Sylvara, Son of John and Sarah Sylvara, was born in Triola, Luzerne County, PA August 13, 1861, he passed away Saturday, September 23, at his home in Chariton, Iowa at the age of 89 years, one month and 10 days. (1950 handwritten in)

      At the age of nine years he moved to Iowa with his family and located near Norwood Here he made his home until grown.

Dec 30, 1882 he united in marriage to Evaline Haltom. To this union were born nine children, three of whom have preceded him in death.

      He leaves his wife and children, Perry, of Webb City, MO., Ira of Wichita, Kansas, John of Yuma, Arizona, Richard of Lucas, Roy and Golda of Chariton; besides these children he leaves four grandchildren who had made their home with him. They are Mrs. Eveline Goben of Creston, Ronald of Lucas, Mrs. Rosemary Loynachan of Charles City, and Jerry of Chariton. There are twenty-three grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

      In 1942 he had a religious experience and often expressed joy in his salvation and hope in the Lord. Besides his relatives, he leaves many friends to mourn his going.

      Those who attend the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. John Sylvara Yuma, Arizona, Perry of Webb City, MO., Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Justus of Jincy, Illinois, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kneeland of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Miles of Gilman, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Loynachan and JoAnne of Charles City, Fred Firestone and children Betty and Billy, Mrs. Donald Carroll of Des Moines, Mrs. Mabel Starkey of Indianola, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Goben, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Haltom of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Taylor, Donald Sylvara and Leona of Kirksville, MO., Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Weakland, Mr. and Mrs. George Weakland of Woodburn, and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Wilson of Melcher.

      Services under the direction of the Miley Funeral home were held Tuesday September 28 at 2:30 p.m. at the Baptist Church. The Rev. W H Peters officiated and the burial was made at the Fletcher cemetery.

      Lucinda Evaline Haltom, daughter of Tilman and Elsome Haltom, was born October 1, 1863, in Lucas County and passed away Friday, November 15, 1955, at her home in Chariton (Iowa) age of 92 years, 1 month 17 days,

      She was converted and united with the Baptist church in her youth.

December 30, 1892 she was united in marriage with Charles (Odell) Sylvara. To this union were born nine children. Her husband and three children preceded her in death.

She leaves six children: Perry of Webb City, MO., Ira of Wichita, Kansas, John of Yuma, Arizona, Richard of Lucas, Roy and Golda of Chariton.

Besides these children she leaves four grandchildren who made their home with their grandparents.

      They are Mrs. Eveline Sylvara Goben of Creston, Ronald of Lucas, Mrs. Rosemary Sylvara Loynachan of Charles City, and Jerry Sylvara of Kirksville, Missouri.

Those who attended the funeral from a distance were:  Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Sylvara of Briceyln, Minnesota,  Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Loynachan and JoAnne of Charles City, Mrs. Elias Haltom, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Goben and sons of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sylvara of Saint Paul, Nebraska, Ira Sylvara of Wichita, Kansas, Perry O Sylvara of Webb City, MO., Lowell and Raymond Sylvara of Independance, Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Sylvara and son of Bloomfield, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Taylor, Leona and Jerry Sylvara of Kirkville, MO., Earl Kneeland of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Freestone and Billy, Mr. and Mrs. David Dales, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Peterson of Des Moines, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Dales of Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Peters, Mrs. Elma Prather and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hadley of Villisca, Mrs. Walter Young of Prescott and Jay Heston of Omaha, Nebraska are 23 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren.

      Funeral services were conducted at the Miley Chapel Sunday November 20, at 2 p.m. The services were in charge of the Rev. Huber Dixon. Internment was in the Chariton Cemetery

Roy Sylvara, son of Charles and Eva Sylvara, was born Aug. 22,1891 in Greeley County, Neb.
He was killed in an automobile accident April 3, 1979 at the intersection of the airport road and Highway 34, at the age of 87 years, seven, months and 13 days.
He was united in marriage to Kate Storm on Sept. 20, 1914. To this union five girls and five boys were born.
Mr Sylvara was preceded in death by his wife; five sons; one daughter and two grandchildren; his parents and three brothers.
He leaves to mourn his passing four daughters; Mable Starkey of Chariton, Marlene Carroll of Denison, Olive Bingaman Baurne of Moberly, Mo. and Martha Wilson of Melcher; one sister, Golda Sylvara and one brother Richard Sylvara, both of Chariton; and 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends.
He will be greatly missed by all who know him. His grandchildren and great- grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 pm Friday April 6, at the Fielding Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Stein officiating. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.

Mrs Kate Sylvara, daughter of George and Adda Storm, was born June 14, 1895, in Pleasant township, Lucas county Iowa.
She passed away on the way to the hospital in Des Moines at noon Nov. at the age of 66 years, 5 months and 3 days, after a lengthy illness.
She was united in marriage to Roy Sylvara on Sept. 20, 1914. To this union five girls and five boys were born.
Mrs Sylvara was preceded in death by four of her sons, her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband Roy, a son Marvin Sylvara of Paynesville, Ky., and five daughters, Mable Starkey of Chariton, Marlene Carroll of Webster City, Clara Justus of Phoenix, Ariz., Olive Bingaman of Moberly, Mo., and Martha Wilson of Melcher; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, also two sisters, Lillie Spencer and Lucy Fortune of Knoxville, two brothers, Jobe and Levi Storm and a host of other relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her; Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Funeral services were held at the Miley Chapel Nov. 19, at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Rodney Thompson officiating. She was laid to rest in the Chariton Cemetery.

Marion Roy Sylvara

Marion Roy Sylvara, infant son of Mr and Mrs Roy Sylvara, died at the home of his parents near Norwood on March 21, 1933, at the age of 2 months and 9 days. The little one was frail from the day of his birth, and all that tender hands and loving hearts could do could not keep the little fellow with them. He is survived by his parents, five sisters, one brother, and his grandparents. Three brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. W. H. Watts, pastor of the Norwood U. B. church, were held at the home of his grandfather Wm. Storm, on Wednesday afternoon, after which the little body was laid to rest by the side of his brothers in the cemetery northwest of Lucas.

5.     Perry O⁵ Silvara (Charles Odell⁴ Sylvara, John³, Emanuel² Silvara, Joseph¹) was born November 26, 1883 in Nebraska, and died April 22, 1971 in Kansas.  He married Carrie "Leona" Watt September 01, 1908, daughter of Roland Watt and Viola Barton.  She was born February 10, 1885 in Vallisca, Iowa, and died August 28, 1953 in Jasper County, Webb City, Mo.  Buriels: Villisca, Iowa

      6.  Ira Egbert⁵ Sylvara (Charles Odell⁴, John³, Emanuel² Silvara, Joseph¹) was born July 19, 1885 in Nebraska, and died December 11, 1968 in Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas. Ira married Grace Rowland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Rowland of Bartlett, Nebraska in 1910. Grace (1888-1918) died leaving five motherless children.

GARRISON- Lloyd V Sylvara, 78, was found dead at his home Friday January 31,1997, from an apparent heart attack.
He was born July 11,1918, at New Virgina, IA, the son of Ira and Grace Rowland Sylvara. He lived and worked through the Midwest before retiring in Garrison.
Graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb.1 at Evergreen Cemetery, with Dr. Dennis Morey officiating.

MEMORIAL SERVICE SATURDAY AT SCARVILLE

A memorial service for Betty Anderson Sylvara, 56, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Lake Mills, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Evangelical Synod Lutheran Church in Scarville. Vicar John Dukleth will officiate.
Mrs Sylvara died December 3, 1982, at University Hospitals, Iowa City, from complications following surgery. She was born January 20, 1926, near Bricelyn, Minn., the daughter of Chester and Hazel Anderson. She had worked at the Graphic Publishing Co. and was active in Scout work while living in Lake Mills.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd, at a Solders Home in South Dakota; a daughter, Victoria, Cedar Rapids; a son, Vern, Lake Mills; a brother, LaMar Anderson, Bricelyn; and two sisters, LaVonne Sylvara, Bricelyn, and Bonnie Tysseling, Newton.

      8.  Mary "Golda"⁵ Sylvara (Charles Odell⁴, John³, Emanuel² Silvara, Joseph¹) or Golda Mae Sylvara as she was also referred to as was born January 19, 1890 in Iowa, on a farm East of Norwood, and died July 16, 1985 in Des Moines, Iowa.  Burial: July 20, 1985, Chariton Cemetery, Iowa

Miss Golda Sylvara, also found as Mary Golda and Golda Mae Sylvara

      Golda Sylvara, the daughter of Charles Odell and Evaline Haltom Sylvara was born on a farm east of Norwood January 19, 1890. She passed away July 16, 1985 in a hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

      When she was four years old the family moved to a farm northwest of Lucas where they lived for over 50 years. They moved to Chariton in 1946 where she lived until 1979 when do to Failing health she moved to Calvin Manor where she spent the remainder of her life.

In 1908 she accepted Christ as her savior and joined the First Baptist Church, in the same year she graduated from Lucas High School.

      She taught in rural schools and then graduated from a two year Normal School Course at Highland Park in 1915, later she graduated from Drake.

After teaching in Shannon City, Spirit Lake and Perry, she came to Chariton in 1927 and taught Junior High until her retirement in 1955.

      Her parents, five brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. An adopted daughter Rosemary White survives her: a granddaughter, Jo Anne Loynachan of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She also helped raise a Niece Evelyn Goben of Creston: two nephews Ronald Sylvara of Chariton and Jerry Sylvara of Saint Louis, MO., besides these she leaves many other nieces and nephews. She always looked forward to their visits and was especially proud of the achievements of the younger generation.

Services were held Saturday, July 20, 1985 at the Fielding Funeral home. The Rev. Ronald Stein officiated. Paul bearers were Todd Sylvara, Larry Goben, Ronald Goben, Kenneth Wilson and Kurt Sylvara. Internment was in the Chariton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Baptist Church.

    9.  John Tillman⁵ Sylvara (Charles Odell⁴, John³, Emanuel² Silvara, Joseph¹) was born May 14, 1895, and died June 23, 1976.  He married June 07, 1926 to Louella Frances Herndon in San Diego, California.  She was born October 08, 1902, and died September 24, 1978. Louella was one of five children of James Henry and Elizabeth ("Lizzie") F. Rogers Herndon. The LDS records his middle name as Tillman and that he married June 7, 1926 in San Diego, California to Louella Frances Herndon. Funeral services for John Tillman Sylvara of Bard will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Johnson Mortuary. Friends may call at Johnson's Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
Sylvara, 81, was active in Bard Valley community affairs and was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Imperial Valley Chapter. He was also a past member of American Legion Post 19 and the Bard Valley Water Users Assn. He celebrated his 50th Wedding anniversary with his wife Louella, April 7.
Chaplain Woodson Mims of YRMC will officiate. Burial will be in Desert Lawn. Graveside rites will be performed by American Legion Post 19 members. Pallbearers will include William B. Noland, Johnny Cloud, Frank Acuna and Al Dordal.

Richard married (2) Olive Leffler.    He married (3) Verbena Berry, daughter of Leland Berry and Ada Del Bland.  She was born April 11, 1910 in Warren County, Iowa, and died December 27, 1990

C Richard Sylvara:

      C Richard Sylvara, the youngest son of Charles D. and Evaline Haltom Sylvara, was born on the family farm West of Lucas, Iowa on May 12, 1904 and departed this life in an auto crash near his home in Chariton, Iowa on August 5. 1980.

    He received his education in the Lucas School. Most of his life was spent working for the railroad road and farming. After retiring he enjoyed his hobbies of woodworking and fishing. He had been in failing health for the last two years.

    He is survived by his wife Verbena and five children, Rosemary White of Marsells, Minnesota, Betty Taylor of Douglas, Wyoming, Donald Sylvara and Leona Sylvara of Centerville, and Jerry Sylvara of Saint Louise, MO. one sister Golda Sylvara of Des Moines, Iowa, two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, five step children as well as a number of step grandchildren, as well as a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

    He was preceded in death by his first wife Ellen, a grandson Stephen Taylor, his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

    Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday August 8, 1980 at the Fielding Funeral home with the Rev. Fred Mansfield conducting. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery.

Rose Ella Penman:

      Many friends in this vicinity will regret to learn of the death of Mrs.. Charles R Sylvara of Lucas, which occurred on Monday March 29, 1926 at Monroe, Iowa. While visiting her parents of that place she contracted Diphtheria, which resulted in her death after a brief illness, at the age of 21 years 27 days.

Rose Ella Penman was born at Andersonville, near Colfax, Iowa on March 2, 1905.

On December 12 1923, she was united in marriage to Charles Richard Sylvara of Lucas, Iowa. To this union was born a daughter, Rose Mary. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband and her daughter of Lucas, Iowa, her mother and step father Mr. and Mrs. George Penman, one brother Barnett Otto Penman, and two step sisters Blanche Louise and Ruth Elizabeth all of Monroe, and a host of relatives and friends. She was highly respected by all who knew her. May she rest in peace till we meet again!

A short service was conducted at the home of her parents in Monroe on Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock by the Elder Wm B Farley of Lucas, Iowa, after which her remains were taken to the Colfax for internment. A short services were held at the grave at that place. The sympathy of many friends will be extended to the bereaved ones.

Verbena Berry:

      Verbena Berry Goben Sylvara was born November 4, 1910 on a farm in Warren County. She was the fifth of six children born to Leonard Row and Ada Dell Bland Berry. She passed away at the Lucas County Health center in Chariton (Iowa) on December 27, 1990 at the age of 80 years 1 month 23 days

      Verbena was married August 1, 1929 to Pearl Goben and moved to Lucas County. To this union were born five children, Richard Francis Goben of Rolla, MO., Robert James Goben of Chariton, Dr Charles Alvin Goben of Carbondale, Illinois, Delmer Ross Goben of Baytown, Texas and Boneti Beatrice Goben Perry of Chariton.  Pearl Goben predeceased her on April 14, 1950. On January 27, 1951 Verbena married Charles Richard  "Rich" Sylvara. He brought to this union five children. Rose Mary Sylvara White of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Betty Sylvara Taylor of Novinger, MO., Donald Edward Sylvara  Leona Mae Sylvara Moore both of Bela Vista, Arkansas and Jerry Odell Sylvara of Saint Louis, Missouri.  "Rich" also preceded her in death August 5, 1980, also surviving Verbena is one brother Franklin Berry of Ames, and her sister Michael Troth of Des Moines. Numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren survive her.

    Verbena's education and avocation was as a seamstress. She sewed for many outside her family in the Lucas County area in the past forty years.

    Funeral services were held at 10:30 Monday December 31, at the Fielding Funeral home with the Rev. Paul McKinley officiating. Colene Reynolds provided organ music. The music was Peace in the Valley and Beyond the Sunset. Serving, as casket bearers were Mickey Vairo, Joe Goben, Daniel Goben, Gilbert Stines, Mike Goben, and Carl Siegworth. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery

Harold Starkey, 42, was killed shortly before noon today when the tractor he was driving overturned in a ditch in front of the Clair Bosworth farm, two miles north of Webster City.
Starkey, who came here with his family recently from Chariton, was employed on the Bosworth farm.
Highway Patrolman Mike Hogan said Starkey apparently tried to make a u-turn when the tractor overturned. A wheel of the tractor came to rest on Starkey's back. Hogan said that death was apparently caused by suffocation.
The body was taken to the Foster funeral home and funeral arrangements are pending.
The Bosworth farm is located one mile east of the former White Fox School.

STARKEY SERVICE AT CHARITON

Funeral services for Samuel Harold Starkey, 42, who was killed yesterday in a tractor mishap north of Webster City, will be held at Chariton Iowa.
Time and place of the service have not yet been announced.
Mr Starkey was pinned under the tractor which overturned as he was attempting a turn on a gravel road near the Clair Bosworth farm, where he had been employed. One wheel of the tractor pinned him in the ditch and it was believed that death was due to suffocation.
The Starkey family had moved to Webster City in December 1957. Surviving are his wife: one daughter, Sharon Rae, 10, his parents, four sisters and three brothers.
His death was listed today as the third traffic fatality in Hamilton County this year.

2 YOUTH DROWNED IN RIVER HERE

Funeral Friday Afternoon for Sylvara Brothers

Ricky, 13, and Randy, 14 sons of Mr and Mrs Marvin Sylvara, Happy Valley Subdivision, Brandenburg, were drowned in the Ohio River, just above Flippins Run, near here about 4:30 pm Tuesday July 4th.
The body of Ricky was recovered from the river about 7 pm Tuesday by a Fort Knox Scuba Diver.
The body of Randy had not been recovered as the Messenger went to press Wednesday noon.
Ricky and Randy were wading in the river with Danny Trent, 14, when Ricky apparently stepped in over his head and called for help. Randy tried to rescue him and both were drowned. Danny went for help.
After the drowning County Judge Bert Allen was called and he constructed a hook for dragging for the bodies. And helped with the dragging until it became to dark for further work.
Wednesday morning the dragging was done by the United States Coast Guard. Scuba divers were scheduled to return Wednesday afternoon if Randy's body was not recovered by that time.
Both boys attended Meade County High School where Randy would have been a sophomore next year and Ricky would have been a freshman.
In addition to their parents they are survived by one sister, Mrs Edward Langford.
The boy's mother Mrs Marvin Sylvara told the Messenger "the boys had never to my knowledge been to the river before. They had strict orders to stay away from the river. So I could not believe it when I was told they were drowned."
Ricky's body is at the Hager-Wright Funeral Home, where his funeral will be conducted Friday at 2 pm by Rev David Bratcher. If Randy's body is recovered by that time, a double funeral will be conducted. Burial will follow in Cape Anderson cemetery.

The body of Randy Sylvara 14 was recovered from the Ohio River just above Flippins Run Wednesday about 4 pm July 5th. The body of his brother Ricky 13 had been recovered Tuesday about 7 pm. The boys were drowned in the river Tuesday about 4:30.
They were the sons of Mr and Mrs Marvin Sylvara of Happy Valley subdivision, Brandenburg.
Double funeral services were conducted at Hager-Wright Funeral Home, Friday at 2 pm. Burial followed in the Cape Anderson Cemetery.
The body of Ricky was recovered by Fort Knox Scuba Divers, and the body of Randy was recovered by the Coast Guard dragging the river.
Judge Bert Allen stated that both he and Kenneth Hager constructed the hooks which were used in dragging for the bodies, and not just by himself as stated in last week's paper.

Marvin Sylvara

Marvin Sylvara 43 years old was found dead in his car in the Cedar Flat area Tuesday morning, April 9th. According to the corner, death was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.
Mr Sylvara had left for work at Keller Manufacturing Co, as usual at 6 am, Monday morning. When he did not come home his wife notified authorities who discovered he had never reported for work.
He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs Edward Langford of Berea. Also survived by 2 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2pm from the Chapel of Hager-Wright Funeral Home.

Lowell J Silvara, 66, Blue Springs, died Monday at the home. He was born in West Chester Iowa, and has lived in this area 30 years. Mr. Silvara was a tree surgeon here for the Davey Tree Expert Company of Ohio, 22 years before he retired in 1969. He was a member of the Plaza Heights Baptist Church, Blue Springs. HUTCHINSON - Marguerite Birkes, 88, died April 12 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born Nov. 12, 1912, at Marion, Iowa, the daughter of Perry O. and Leona Watt Silvara. She married Farrell Birkes May 4, 1952, at Webb City, Mo. He died Dec. 19, 1975. A resident of Hutchinson since 1978, coming from Montezuma, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Birkes was a member of First Baptist Church of Hutchinson, a past member of Early Bird Extension Homemakers Unit of Hutchinson and a past member of Blue Light EHU of Montezuma. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Burkett of Hutchinson and Roberta Pike of Stafford; one brother, Melvin Silvara of Oroville, Calif.; one sister, Harriett Houseman of Grove, Okla.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Two brothers, Raymond Silvara and Lowell Silvara, preceded her in death. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairview Cemetery in Montezuma with the Rev. Jim Autrey officiating. Memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Strauth Museum of Montezuma or the church, both in care of Minnis Chapel in Stafford.

HARRIETT VIOLA HOUSMAN

GROVE - Harriett Viola Housman of Grove died Friday, October 25, 2002 at her Grand Lake home. She was 77.
Harriett was born December 23, 1924 to Perry O. and Leona Silvara in Ft. Worth, Texas. She worked as a telephone operator during WWII. She worked as an insurance sales representative for Mutual of Omaha Co. and Banker Life and Casualty Co., earning top salesman of the year award multiple times. Harriett has attended and volunteered at churches all her life, including roles such as church organist, choir director, Sunday School, and Bible teacher. She was currently attending First Baptist Church in Southwest City, Mo. She loved her cats and enjoyed the view through the two-story, all glass north wall of her house on Grand Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lowell Silvara and Raymond Silvara; and her sister, Marguerite (Silvara) Birkes.
Survivors include: her husband of 60 years, James A. Housman; her children, Ronald L. Housman of Grove, and Robyn (Housman) Caruthers of Tulsa, Okla.; one brother, Melvin Silvara of Oroville, Calif.; four grandchildren, Olivia and Whitney Caruthers of Tulsa, Tina and John Housman of San Antonio, Texas; and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. The family expresses deep gratitude to those who loved and cared for Harriett.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, at the First Baptist Church in Southwest City with Rev. Ray Clanton officiating. Donations may be made to the Missouri Baptist Children's Home in care of the church, or the Cornerstone Bank in Southwest City. There is an Earl on the Social Security death index, which could very well be this fellow. April 2, 1913 to August 28, 1994. The Social Security number was issued in Colorado.

EARL ROWLAND SYLVARA

Earl Rowland Sylvara was born April 2, 1913 to Ira and Grace (Rowland) Sylvara at Lucas County, Iowa. He died August 28, 1994 at the Community Memorial Health Center, Burwell, at the age of 81 years.
Earl moved to Ericson, Nebraska at the age of 6 after his mother died and was raised by his Aunt and Uncle, Frank and Jessie Heston. He received his education at Ericson and graduated from Ericson High School in 1934.
On July 3, 1937 Earl married Myrtle Cushman at St. Paul, Nebraska and moved to Grand Island where Earl worked for Bartenbach Outdoor Advertising for several years. They moved to a farm north of Shelton in 1947 where they farmed for eight years. They then moved to St. Paul in 1955. In 1959 they moved to Colorado Springs, CO where he worked at General Outdoor Advertising Company and later worked for the City Street Department for three years. Earl then took the job as Electronic Maintenance man for Hewlitt Packard before retiring in 1978. They moved to Holdrege, NE in 1980 and moved to Burwell in 1988 where he made his home until his death.
Earl loved sports, hunting, fishing and camping. He especially enjoyed baseball and in his early years played on the Ericson town team as the baseball pitcher. Earl was a great storyteller.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle, one son, Darwin Alden of Yakima, WA, one daughter, Myrna Dyksterhuis, Albuquerque, NM; two brothers, Ronald of Chariton, IA and Lloyd from IA one sister, Evelyn Goben, Creston, IA, and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Edwin.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 31, 1994, at the United Methodist church at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Mitchell officiating. Music was provided by Kay Buckles, Evelyn Pinckney and Dixie Weber. Pallbearers included Clifford Johnson, Randy Jarmin, Don Halkyard, Larry Goben, Dale Johnson, Clyde Kraft and Bill Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were all friends near and far.
Burial was at Bartlett Cemetery, Bartlett. Memorials are suggested to the family. Eberle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle Sylvara

      BURWELL -- Myrtle V. Sylvara, 85, of Burwell died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Ericson. The Rev. Mike Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Bartlett City Cemetery in Bartlett.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

      Mrs. Sylvara was born Nov. 19, 1916, at Ericson to Alden H. and Charolotte J. (Morris) Cushman.  She married Earl Sylvara on July 3, 1937, in St. Paul. The couple lived in Grand Island until 1948 when they moved to a farm north of Shelton. In 1956, they moved to St. Paul. In 1959, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where she worked at Vicon Hearing Aid for several years. She then worked at Hewlett Packard doing quality control. She retired in the early 1980s and they moved to Holdrege. In 1988, they moved to Burwell. Her husband died Aug. 28. 1994.

      She enjoyed cooking for her family, traveling, fishing, flowers and gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Myrna Sylvara of Albuquerque, N.M.; a son, Darwin"Sonny" Sylvara of Yakima, Wash.; two grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Nelle Fauvette Cushman of Burwell; and a sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Glen Gosda of Grand Island. Her husband, five sisters and a brother preceded her in death

BRICELYN- Funeral services for Charles "Eddie" Sylvara, 77, Bricelyn, were held Saturday, March 7 at the 
Bricelyn Lutheran Church. The Reverend Dennis Hugdahl officiated. Mr Sylvara died Tuesday, March 3, 
1992 at his home in Bricelyn. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. 
Charles Sylvara was born Oct. 31, 1914 to Ira and Grace (Rowland) Sylvara, in Lucas 
County Iowa. He grew up in Ericson, Nebraska, and moved to Bricelyn in 1939. He was married to 
LaVonne Anderson. He also served in the United States Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, 
LaVonne, Bricelyn: three sons and their wives, Bruce and Pat Sylvara, Osceola, Wis., Darren and 
Beverly Sylvara, Janesville, and Kurt and Maureen Sylvara, Bricelyn; one daughter, 
Lisa Studer, Hudson, Wis., eight grandchildren, two special girls, Kaylene and Michelle Molskness; 
three great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Goben, Creston Iowa; and three brothers, Earl 
Sylvara and his wife Myrtle, Burwell, Neb., Mike Sylvara 
and his wife Dorothy, Chariton, Iowa, and Lloyd Sylvara, Iowa.

Ronald "Mike" Sylvara, 82, of Kansas City, Mo., died of a respiratory aliment Sunday at the New Mark Care Center there, where he resided the past 10 days.  Services will be at 10:30 am Wednesday at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton with burial at Chariton Cemetery.

Mr. Sylvara was born in Lucas County and farmed in the area for many years. He had lived in Kansas City for six months.
  
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Vicki Sylvara of Kansas City; and a grandchild.
The family will greet friends from 6:30 pm to 8 pm today at the funeral home.

Ronald "Mike" Sylvara, son of Ira and Grace (Rowland) Sylvara, was born near New Virginia, Iowa, on Aug. 25, 1916. He passed away on Jan. 10, 1999, at the New Mark Care Center in Kansas City, Mo., at the age of 82 years.


At the age of two, Mike went to live with his grandparents, Eva and Charles Sylvara, near Lucas, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Lucas High School. He farmed in the Lucas area until retiring in 1981. Besides his interest in farming, he enjoyed traveling, reading, playing cards and visiting with friends and relatives.


Mike was united in marriage to Dorothy Heston Dec. 26, 1945. To this union were born two children, Bobby Dean and Vicki Lynn.


He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Dorothy, daughter Vicki, and granddaughter Ashley Lynn. Other survivors include his brother Lloyd, sister-in-law, Myrtle and LaVonne Sylvara. Other in-laws are Everette and Lois Miller, John and Rose Heston, Will and Meg Schultz, and many other relatives and friends.


He was preceded in death by his son Bobby Dean; his parents; grandparents; sister, Evelyn Goben and her husband Walter; brothers, Earl and Edwin; sister-in-law, Betty Sylvara; and in-laws, George Heston and Frank Lancaster.


Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Pastor Bill Kerns officiated. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery.


Serving, as bears were Jerry Goben, Ronald Goben, Larry Lancaster, Andy Heston, Kurt Sylvara and Jim Wilson. Honorary bears included Larry Goben and Johnny Heston. Memorials may be made in his name to the Lucas Presbyterian Church or the American Diabetes Association.

Bobby Dean Sylvara, son of Ronald M (Mike) and Dorothy Sylvara, was born April 19,1947, and passed away February 26,1965.


He was born in Osceola, Iowa, and was raised and educated in Lucas County. He was a junior in Chariton high school at the time of his death. He was a member of the Future Farmers of America, the 4-H club, and carried the Des Moines Register and Tribune for several years. He was a member of the Presbyterian church of Lucas Iowa.


He is survived by his parents; Mr and Mrs Ronald M (Mike) Sylvara; his sister Vicki Lynn (9 years of age); his grandfathers; Harry Heston of Lucas and Ira Sylvara of Wichita, Kans.; and his great aunt, Golda Sylvara of Lucas.


Services were conducted at Miley Chapel Tuesday March 2, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dale Powell officiating. Internment was at the Chariton Cemetery.

Norma Roberts of Mullin Texas, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006, at her home in Mullin Texas. She was 76 years of age.

Mrs Roberts was born May 28, 1930, in Yuma Arizona, the daughter of John T, and Louella Francis (Herdon) [sic] Sylvara.


On May 6, 1949, she married HR “Dick” Roberts at Yuma Arizona. 

After retiring from the Army, the couple moved to Mullin where they have made their home for the past 38 years.

Norma was a member of the Mullin Baptist Church.

For many years she worked at Goldthwaite Senior Health Center and the Mullin School as a food service supervisor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, JoAnna Noland of Phoenix Arizona.

Survivors are her husband HR “Dick” Roberts of Mullin: eight children, Jim Roberts of Galveston, Glenda Hughbanks of McKinney, John Roberts of Bolder Colorado, Elizabeth Miller of Goose Creek, South Carolina, Margaret Goetze of Laredo, Rebecca Nelson of Stephenville, Beverly Ripley of Texas and Laura Pope of Tennessee. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. 

The funeral was Friday, December 29, 2006, at 10:00 am at the Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel in Goldthwaite, with Bill Ellis officiating. Internment was in the Oakview Cemetery, Mullin Texas.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

DOUGLAS -- Funeral services for Charles Edward Pexton, 87, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Linda Wells officiating. Interment will be in the Douglas Park Cemetery.

Family and friends may call the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m to 12 p.m.

He died on June 9, 2008, at the Memorial Hospital of Converse County, after a long gallant fight with lung cancer.

He was born April 20, 1921, in Douglas, to Lisle Edward and Lucille Emogene (Scott) Pexton. He was educated in the Glendo and Douglas schools.
He left high school in the middle of his junior year to help his injured father on the ranch.

On April 13, 1941, he married F. Gilberta Barnhill, in Douglas. 
They lived on a ranch south of Douglas. They purchased a portion of the ranch in 1947.
In 1989, they sold the ranch to their son, and moved to Douglas.
He helped on the ranch until his late 70s.

He sold alfalfa and grain seed until his death.
He was a member of farm bureau, serving as membership chairman, district director, and on the state board of directors.
He served on the board of directors of the Federal Land Bank. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as Trustee.
He was a member of the Masons, Eastern Star, and of the Wyoming Pioneer Association. He served on the Converse County School District #1 board of trustees for two terms.

His enjoyed refinishing furniture, woodworking, traveling, and visiting with friends and family.
In 1997, his first wife died.

On Dec. 22, 1998, he married Betty Jean (Sylvara) Taylor in Douglas.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Pexton, of Douglas; children and their spouses, Charlene Brown of Omak, Wash.; son, Gene Pexton of Douglas; stepson, Stan Taylor and his wife of Houston, Texas; a daughter-in-law; siblings and their spouses, Joan Woodin-Harmon of Casper; brothers, John and Richard Pexton of Douglas; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife of 56 years, Gilberta; son, Dr. John Edward 'Ed' Pexton; and sister, Barbara Lea Pexton.
A memorial to the Converse County Ranchers' Memorial Scholarship Fund or American Cancer Society, can be' sent to the Converse County Bank, P.O. Box 689, Douglas, WY 82633, would be appreciated by the family.

BELLA VISTA-Velma Colene Sylvara, 66, of Bella Vista, died 
July 17, 2000 at her home. She was born Feb.28, 1934 in Kirksville, MO. 
to Warren and Josie Ludwig. She taught business education for 25 years in 
Centerville, Ia. She moved to this area from Centerville 11 years ago and was 
a member and elder of the Highland Christian Church. She was active in the 
Questers, Been There Inc., Stonecroft Ministries, Bella Vista Women’s 18-Hole Golf, 
Bridge Club 8, Christian Women’s Fellowship, Church Women’s United, and the National 
Education Association. Survivors include her husband, Donald Sylvara; her mother; one 
son, Stewart Sylvara of Eagle Rock, MO.; one daughter, Debra Shepley of Burnsville MN; 
one sister, Arlene Martin of Washington state; and seven grandchildren.  Memorial 
services will be later at Highland Christian Church with Rick Hamilton officiating.

He was married three times:  (1) to Arlene Laurel "Suzie" Lombard, about 1962, in Minnesota, divorced in 1966; (2) to Patricia "Pat" Gonser, about 1966, divorced about 1994; and then (3) to Carole Ann Brown on August 30, 1997, in Polk County, Wisconsin.

BRUCE LAMAR SYLVARA

Bruce Lamar Sylvara of Osceola died Thursday, May 17, 2001, as a result of injuries sustained from a house fire. He was 58 years old.



Bruce was born Oct 23, 1942, in Buffalo Center, Iowa. He was a 32-year employee of Anderson Windows and a lover of the outdoors.  He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edwin Sylvara.


He is survived by his wife, Carole Ann (Brown); mother, Lavonne Sylvara of Bricelyn, Minn.; brothers, Daren Sylvara of Janesville, Minn.; and Kurt Sylvara of Bricelyn; sister, Lisa Butterbrodt (Karl) of Hudson; daughter, Stacy Reynolds (Bill) of Hudson; sons, Ryan Sylvara of Osceola and Wayne Sylvara (Christie) of Hudson; stepdaughters, Rachel and Christine Mammenga of Osceola; and six much loved grandchildren, Michael Hillebrandt, Joshua Reynolds, Mickal, Justin, Cody Ray and Jacob Sylvara.



Services were Monday, May 21 at Bradshaw Chapel in Stillwater with private interment.

Their son, James Nathan Sylvara, was born in Freeborn County, Minnesota on February 23, 2001.

Memorial services for Sherry Denise Alexander will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home with celebrant Kenna Rose officiating.
Burial of her cremains will be June 30 in Bloomfield, Iowa.

Mrs. Alexander, 50, of Gillette died Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of breast cancer.

She was born Jan. 3, 1957, in Crooksville, Mo., to Grover Nym and Betty Jean (Sylvara) Taylor. She was raised and educated in Bloomfield, graduating from high school in 1975. Upon her graduation, she attended Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa.

She met and married Stephen J. Jackson in Lancaster, Mo. They operated a family fuel hauling business in Centerville. They later divorced.
In 1997, she and her two sons moved to Douglas where she drove for different transportation companies, hauling railroad crews. She continued this work after moving to Gillette in 1999.

In 2000, she met her soul mate, Andy Alexander. They were married Dec. 20, 2001, in Gillette. She was an artist of many talents. She loved her animals, dogs, cats, horses and the occasional raccoon. She enjoyed camping and fishing. She was most in her element collecting rocks in the mountains or shells on a beach.

Mrs. Alexander is survived by her husband of Gillette; two sons, Eric Jackson of Gillette and Justin Jackson of Centerville; mother, Betty Pexton of Douglas; brother, Stanley Taylor of Denver; one niece; one nephew; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father; son, Joseph Jackson; and brother, Steven Taylor.

Sherry Denise Alexander

Sherry Denise Taylor Alexander, 50, of Gillette, Wyo., formerly of Bloomfield, died June 19, 2007 at the Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette, Wyo. 

She was born Jan. 3, 1957, in Kirksville, Mo., to Grover Nym and Betty Jean Sylvara Taylor. She was raised and educated in Bloomfield, graduating from Davis County Community High School in 1975. Upon her graduation, Sherry attended Indian Hills Community College in Centerville.

She is preceded in death by her father; a son, Joseph Jackson; and a brother, Steven Taylor.

Memorials services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Burial of the cremains will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Memorials have been established to Hospice Inc. or the American Cancer Society.
