Cindy Coppock is a descendant of the famous Lewis family of Sullivan County, PA and a past contributor of valuable historical materials to our site. You can see a fine example of Cindy's prowess as a family historian at the Lewis and Huckell Families of Hillsgrove. In November 2008, we learned that Cindy was examining a photo gallery originally collected by her mother's first cousin, Olga Elizabeth (Beinlich) Cott Davis. This album contained over 30 photographs from early in the twentieth century. The subjects were personalities, lives and activities of the Beinlich, Little and other related families from this period. Olga's maternal ancestors included Little, Osler, Brown, Kalis, Holmes, Myers, Snyder, Hinkle, Walson, Langstraat, Polhemus, Couwenhoven, Dennis, Knott, Mohr, Laan, Ten Eyck, Schenck, Woodward, Fleming, Vanderveer, Hegeman, Monfoort, Wyckoff, Newell, Manderville, Cool, Van Kouwenhoven, Van DerWerven and Van Scherpenzeel. Her paternal ancestors included Beinlich, Baumunk, Stutes, Bental, Rettig, Bormuth and Mohr. So, she was linked by descent and marriage to many of the great families of western Sullivan County, specifically in the Elkland, Hillsgrove and Shunk communities, among others. We are very grateful to Cindy for sharing these items here, and for the assistance of Larry Pardoe in interpreting and contextualizing the information.

Let's first look at a little bit of family history here to put the story in ancestral framework. Cindy was able to examine the album because it is in the possession of Olga's daughter, Judy Lea (Cott) Bender Epler. As we indicated above, Olga and Kay were first cousins, that is, they had the same grandparents. As a result, Judy and Kay are second cousins. Olga and Kay had mothers who were sisters, Julia Blanche (Little) Beinlich and Nellie Agnes (Little) Lewis, respectively. Julia and Nellie were daughters of Ulysses Grant Little and Lillian Elizabeth (Osler) Little.

We will present the photos from the album in the rough order of the album cover, those images in which Olga herself appears, and then photos involving other relatives or people. But, first, let's first look at the Beinlich family history as we can determine it. We will address the Cott family, into which Olga married, after we look at the photos in the album. We have also provided a Cott family ancestry as an Appendix to this page, courtesy of Larry Pardoe, to which you can refer as you go along. The following remarks on the Beinlichs and their relatives, and the comments on the photos themselves, are courtesy of Larry Pardoe unless otherwise indicated.

The Beinlichs

The story begins for us with Francis Beinlich, born in Prussia and found in the 1880 Federal census for Elkland Township, Sullivan County, PA as: "Binley, Francis, self, age 53, b. Prussia, farmer, parents b. Prussia". Let Larry takes us from there:

On October 10, 2001, the German Cemetery, Elkland Township, Sullivan County, PA. was transcribed by Phil Herman. He shows: "Beinlich, Franc, b. September 9, 1826, d. April 20, 1902."

The funeral of Francis Beinlich was largely attended here Thursday. The G.A.R. officiating, Rev. Mr. Hoover preaching an able sermon. Interment at the Reformed * church cemetery.
Mr. Beinlich was our oldest citizen, being in his seventy-sixth year. He had been visiting his son Henry, in Philadelphia, for the last three or four months, and was accidentally killed while there. Opening the wrong door he fell down the cellar receiving injuries from which he never regained consciousness.
He was a veteran of two wars; serving four years in Germany and three years in the United States.

Francis Beinlich's son was Francis Carl Beinlich who married Caroline Baumunk. Here are the notes I have for him. they were Olga's paternal grandparents:

1880 Elkland Twp., Sullivan Co., PA census shows: Binley, Francis, son, age 19, at home, father b. Prussia, mother b. Baden.
1910 Elkland Twp., Sullivan Co., PA census shows: Beinlich, Frank C., head, age 47, married x 1, 21 years, parents b. Germany, occupation-butcher-general dealer.
On September 2, 2001, the Bethel Cemetery was transcribed by Phil Herman. He transcribed one marker as Frank C. Beinlich.
There is a "Baby Beinlich", b. July 5, 1891, d. July 15, 1891 buried in the German Cemetery, near Hugo's Corners, Elkland Township, Sullivan County, PA. Not sure if this is a child of Francis and Caroline, but the date fits in.

Francis and Ann also had several other children, as shown by the 1870 Federal Census for Elkland Township, Sullivan County, PA: Anna, born July 30, 1857 and died in 1895 in Estella PA, subsequently married William Hammond Biddle (b. October 10, 1858 in Williamsport, Lycoming County, PA-d. 1928 in Estella, Sullivan County, PA. Louis was born about 1860, subsequent history not known. Minnie, Charles and Henry also appear in this Census report. We know that two other children, Emily and Elizabeth, were born after 1870 to Francis and Ann (Stukes) Bienlich.

Not much is known about most of these children, although Minnie (1865-1909) is known to have married Christian/Christopher Kobbe. Many of the Beinlich and Kobbe family members are buried at German Cemetery in Elkland, PA, including Minnie and her husband William "Christian" Kobbe (1857-1931). Wilhelm Christian Kobbe, son of Henry Kobbe and Lenea Kopeman Kobbe was born in Hanover, Germany February 7, 1857; died March 11, 1931 at the home of his son, Ernest, in Elkland township, Sullivan County, Pa.
He was united in marriage October 5, 1882 to Miss Minnie Beinlich who died November 6th 1909. To this union were born eight children all of whom survived. They are Anna Shadduck, Athens, Pa. Fredericka Bailey, Overton, Pa. Ernest Kobbe, Eldredsville, Pa; Clarence Kobbe, Flint, Mich; Delbert Kobbe, Williamsport, Pa. ; Edna Reed, Roaring Branch, Pa; Alfred Kobbe, Eldredsville, Pa; Lavinia Chapman, Col. X Roads, Pa. He is also survived by thirty-five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Kobbe has always lived in this vicinity since coming to this country. He always farmed. Early in life he united with the German Reformed church. The funeral was held from the home and the church of which he was a member on Saturday, March 14th; at 1:00 p.m.
Interment was made in the cemetery just beside the church. A large number of neighbors and friends attended the funeral.
Rev. Jelliff, pastor of the Wesleyan church of Millview officiated.

ALFRED C. KOBBE

Alfred C. Kobbe, 91, a resident of Bradford County Manor and formerly of Elkland Township in Sullivan County, passed away Saturday, November 7, 1992 following a lingering illness. He was born on March 14, 1901 in Elkland Township, Sullivan County, the son of the late Christian and Minnie Beinlich Kobbe. Prior to his residence at the Bradford County Manor Alfred was a lifetime resident of Sullivan County. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Lavina Chapman of Springfield, PA and numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ernest, Delbert, Clarence and Edward and three sisters, Fredrica, Edna and Anna. Funeral services were held November 10 at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home in Dushore with the Rev. Robert W. Martin officiating and burial to be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Hugo Corners, Forksville RR.

KOBBE –EDNA E. KOBBE REED, 88 of 42 South Center Street, Canton passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 1985 in the Williamsport Hospital. She was born March 25, 1897 in Elkland Twp. (Sullivan Count), a daughter of Christopher and Minnie Beinlich Kobbe. She was a member of the East Point United Methodist Church. During her long and productive life, Mrs. raised 14 children and six stepchildren. Surviving are six sons, Gerald A. Reed of Roaring Branch, Fred A. Reed of Canton, Roy C. Reed of Liberty, Carl D. Reed, Bradenton, Fla. and James L. and Dan Reed, both of Linden; four daughters, Mrs. Marcella Skelly of Lawrenceville, Mrs. LaVern (Elma) Folkerson of Roaring Branch RD 1, Mrs. Dan (Helen) Sherant of Arnot and Mrs. Milo (Betty) Reibson of Forksville; four stepchildren, Walter Reed, of Williamsport and Mrs. Margaret Lusk, Mrs. Kenneth (Mary) Brion and Mrs. Grant (Lydia) Roupp all of Williamsport; one brother, Alfred Kobbe of Forksville; a sister, Mrs. Lavinia Chapman of Columbia Cross Roads; 65 grandchildren, 107 Great-grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two husbands, Guy Burgess and Fred Reed as well as four children, two stepchildren, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, 40 N. Center St., Canton with the Rev. Nannie Dubbs, pastor of the Forksville United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Forksville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Estella - Francis BEINLICH sold his farm to his son in law, H. M. [sic] BIDDLE, of Hillsgrove, who will move here this week.

The newspaper entry above has a typo in the initial for William H. Biddle. Any way, Anna died before the 1900 Federal census, which shows William with his his four children living in Elkland Township. The children are Bessie A., Harvey W., Arthur F. and Carl V. Biddle. There is also a 14 year old Russle [sic] Biddle living with the Aaron Lewis family in nearby Hilslsgrove at this time, but do not know if this is a sibling of the other Biddle children. There is a brief Beinlich descent chart below in which you can reference these individuals.

NOTE. A few years ago, I purchased History of Elkland Township Including The Early Settlements Together With Biographical Sketches and Statistics And Matters of General Interest by George Streby, Dushore, PA, Sullivan Gazette Print 1904 (Streby Reprint No. 7), from the Sullivan Review. Here is what it says on page 33 regarding F. C. Beinlich:

F.C. Beinlich

Was born at Philadelphia, July 10, 1862. He was a son of Francis Beinlich, who was born in Baden, Germany, Sept. 20, 1826. He served four years in the Regular Army in Germany and came to America in 1854, landing at Philadelphia, where he married Ann Stutes in 1860; they came to Elkland township. In 1861 they moved back to Philadelphia. Mr. Beinlich enlisted in the Civil war, serving four years. At the close of the war, they moved to Estella, Elkland township, where Mr. Beinlich purchased the Henry Williams farm, where he remained until his death in 1902. Mrs. Beinlich died Dec. 14, 1899. F.C. Beinlich owns what was formerly known as the William Marisdan farm *. In 1888 he married Carrie Baumunk, a daughter of Adam and Barbara (Bentel) Baumunk, of Elkland township, who were both natives of Hessen Darmstrat [sic: should be Darmstadt], Germany, and came to America, locating in Elkland township in 1866. 1. Jenny-1942: This is probably Jennie E. Campbell (February 5, 1917-June 2, 2002), wife of Carl Gleason Cott (March 8, 1918-1999). Carl was the brother of Valentine Charles Cott.
2. Clarence and team-1942: This is Clarence G. Cott (May 19, 1891-June 1966), father of Valentine and Carl Cott.
3. Mother-Judy-1941: This is Olga's mother, Julia Blanche Little (February 28, 1896 -January 26, 1987), and Olga's daughter, Judy Lea Cott [see obituary below].

LITTLE -JULIA L. BEINLICH, 90 formerly of Estella died Monday Jan. 26, 1987 at the United Methodist Home in LaPorte following a lingering illness. Born Feb. 28, 1896 in Elkland Township, she was the daughter of the late U. Grant and Lillian Osler Little. She was a lifetime resident of Sullivan County and was a member of the former Church of Christ Disciples of Estella and later attended the Estella Methodist Church. She was a member of the Elkland Grange for 70 years and had worked with the various 4-H clubs when they were started in the county. She was one of the first women school bus drivers in the county and was a charter member of the Endless Winds Fire Company of Shunk. She also served as deputy sheriff of Sullivan County and served as prison matron when her husband was sheriff. She worked for many years for the Sullivan County Extension Service and distributed surplus food and helped organize the Community Improvement Club in Estella. She was also active in the Republican Party. Her husband, the late Raleigh Beinlich, died in 1972, also a son Edwin R. Beinlich died as he was serving as sheriff in May 1972. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Allen (Olga) Davis of Hillsgrove; son F. Calvin Beinlich of Dushore; sister, Mrs. Lawrence (Caroline) Baumunk of Shunk [see obit below]; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral and committal cervices will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore with the Rev. Nannie Dubbs officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Forksville Cemetery. There will be no viewing. Memorials may be made to the Sullivan County Chapter of the Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Judy Epler, Dushore.

Caroline Little Baumunk, 95, of Shunk, Pa., passed away Friday, July 25, 2003 at the Towanda Memorial Hospital of heart failure following two recent operations and pneumonia.
Caroline was born in Estella on Jan. 2, 1908, the daughter of Ulyssus [sic] Grant Little and Lillian Osler Little. She graduated from Estella High School in 1925 and attended the Mansfield Normal School (now Mansfield University). At age 18, Caroline became a teacher in Lincoln Falls and later taught at the West School in Elkland Township.
On June 14, 1928, Caroline married Lawrence Baumunk of Lincoln Falls. The young coupled farmed with his father Philip until 1934. In that year, Lawrence and Caroline purchased the General Store in Shunk and founded the business that continues to flourish 70 years later as L.L. Baumunk & Son. Caroline also served as the postmaster of Shunk from 1953 to 1978.
Caroline was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, which included her term as Worthy Matron. Other memberships included the Shunk United Methodist Church, the Sullivan County Historical Society, Sullivan County Republican Women, and the Endless Winds Volunteer Fire Company. She was an enthusiastic fisherman, a traveler to many countries, and a community supporter. In retirement, she created many beautiful quilts. She and Lawrence took great pleasure building their home on the beaver dam that was turned into a lovely small lake.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Kenneth Ford of Philadelphia, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Lucy Baumunk of Shunk, eight grandchildren and their spouses, Ann and Bob Henderson of Shunk, Mary and Steve Blondy of Madison, N.J., Emily and Brian Wilken of Honesdale, Pa., Nina Tannenwald and Mark Suchman of Providence, R.I., Adam Ford of Chicago, Ill., Caroline Eisenhood and Ian Lucas Ford, both of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jason Ford of Alexandria, Va.; two step-grandchildren, Paul Ford and Wendy White of Oak Park, Ill., and Sarah Ford and Nick Monroe of Sonoma, Calif.; 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Caroline was predeceased by her husband Lawrence in 1995, her son Dale in 2002, as well as by her brother, Otto Little and sisters, Dolly Withers, Nellie Lewis, Sadie Barbour and Julia Beinlich.
Her family invites friends to call from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, July 28 at the Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Dr., Canton.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Herbert Eby and the Rev. James House officiating. Interment will follow in the Quaker Cemetery, Shunk, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Endless Winds Fire Company, P.O. Box 39, Shunk, Pa., 17768, or to the Shunk United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 70, Shunk, Pa., 17768.

LAWRENCE L. BAUMUNK, 89, husband of Caroline Little Baumunk, Shunk passed away Monday October 16, 1995 at Troy Community Hospital. Born June 6, 1906 on a farm near Lincoln Falls, PA, he was a son of the late Philip and Irene Letts Baumunk. Lawrence was a graduate of Estella High School, class of 1923. On June 14, 1928 he married the former Caroline Little in Estella. Together with his wife they purchased the General Store in Shunk on March 9, 1934. From that time until he retired, they expanded the business into the trucking, sawmill and pallet mill firm of L.L. Baumunk and Sons, Inc., which is now owned by his son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Lucy Baumunk and his granddaughter and husband Ann and Bob Henderson. Mr. Baumunk served as Postmaster of Shunk for 16 years and Fox Township Supervisor for 12 years. He was a 50-year member of the Canton Lodge No. 415 Free and Accepted Masons and the Williamsport Consistory. Mr. Baumunk was a director of the First National Bank of Canton for over 30 years and was a Director Emeritus at the time of his death. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association, the National Rifle Association, the Endless Winds Fire Company, the Sullivan County Historical Society and a sustaining member of the Republican Party. Surviving are: Caroline Little Baumunk his wife of 67 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Lucy Baumunk of Shunk; a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Kenneth Ford, Philadelphia; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Ann and Bob Henderson, Shunk; Mary and Steve Blondy, Madison, NJ; Emily and Brian Wilken, Honesdale; Nina Tannenwald, Providence, RI; Caroline and Bill Eisenhood, Adam Ford, and Ian Lucas Ford, all of Albuquerque, NM; Jason Ford, Washington, DC; two step-grandchildren and their spouses, Paul Ford and Wendy White, Oak Park, IL; Sarah Ford and Nick Monroe, DelMar, CA; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gleyna Vogt and Phyllis Molyneux, both of Forksville; sister-in-law, Naomi Baumunk, Sabinsville, PA; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Baumunk and a sister, Amber Battin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 19, 1995 at the Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Drive, Canton. The Canton Masonic Lodge No. 415 will conduct services at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday October 20 at the funeral home with Pastor Herbert Eby officiating. Interment will be held in the Brown Cemetery, Shunk. The caption on the preceding photo reads "Granma" and we are told that Raleigh Beinlich, her son-in-law and husband of Julia, is driving the car behind Lillian. Lillian was born August 17, 1871 and died May 3, 1961. Her husband, Ulysses, was born January 11, 1865 and died December 4, 1932. Cindy tells us that the house in the photo is the actual home of Gleason and Nellie (Little) Lewis, and the building to the left of it was their store.

The preceding photo was taken in front of the Estella Garage. Olga's father, Raleigh Beinlich, is believed to have owned or operated this garage at one time.

Maxine and Jeanne were daughters of Raymond E. Thomas and Mildred Everitt. Helen Anna Fetherbay was daughter of Lee Fetherbay and Elsie Schiffl, and later married Olga's brother, Edwin Russell Beinlich. Marion Allen is believed to be a daughter of Harvey Allen.

Olga Elizabeth Beinlich and Jean ("Jeanne") Thomas, shown here, were known to be schoolmates. She was Jeanne P. Thomas, daughter of Raymond E. Thomas (April 5, 1892-August 3, 1950) and Mildred (Everitt) Thomas (June 19, 1891-December 1979). Maxine was Jeanne's sister.

Valentine Charles Cott (February 14, 1915-March 2, 1999) and Olga Elizabeth Beinlich (March 20, 1921-September 18, 1993) were married January 6,1940, then divorced in February 1965. This may be a honeymoon photograph. Thereafter, Olga married Allen H. "Homer" Davis [obit below] in 1973. Allen Davis was married three times. His second marriage was to Olga (Beinlich) Cott, which was her second marriage as well.After she died, he married a third time (possible a common law marriage) to Pearl Thomas, who seems to have been previously married before her marriage to Allen Davis. "Thomas" was the surname of her first husband.

DAVIS - Allen H. “Homer” Davis, age 84, of Forksville, passed away March 22, 2008. He was born on April 11, 1923 in Bristol Hills, NY. Prior to retirement in 1988, he was employed by Pullman Power Products. He moved to Hillsgrove in 1988, and to Forksville in 1997. Memberships: Plumbers & Steam Fitters Local Unions, Evergreen Lodge No. 163, F. &A.M. in Monroeton, PA; the Williamsport American Legion Post No. 1, and attended the Hillsgrove U.M.C. He loved to play country music, for 60 years at local clubs throughout the area. Survived by: two sons: Stephen (Joyce) Davis of Linden, PA, Edward David, of Hemet, CA; his companion: Pearl Thomas, of Forksville, PA, by her children: Jason, Aaron, and Angela, of IL; by two sisters: Arlene and Emily; by four grandchildren: Stephen, Arthur, George, and Joyleen; and by two special young people: Chandra and Jalen. Predeceased by parents, wife: Olga, brothers: Lynn and Everett Davis and sister: Elta White. Friends and family are invited to call on Thurs., March 27th, at Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, in Dushore 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Funeral services will at 12 noon, with the Rev. David Hart, pastor officiating. Interment will be in Hillsgrove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forksville Fire Company, Forksville, PA 18616.

Barbour and Sadie Margaret Little; and another first cousin, Dwight Gleason Lewis, b. September 27, 1923, d. June 4, 2005, son of Gleason Aaron (January 23, 1900-September 15, 1963) and Nellie Agnes (Little) Lewis (November 7, 1904-October 13, 1957). Nellie was the great granddaughter of Theophilus Little and Mary Polhemus, the progenitors of the Little Family in Sullivan County.

RAYMOND G. BARBOUR 70 of 994 Paulhamus Hill Road, Cogan Station died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002. He retired in 1989 from Textron Lycoming. He and his wife, the former Peggy E. McKee celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary on Oct. 21, 2001. Ray was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and was a life member of both the Republican League in Newberry and the Antlers Country Club. He was also a member of the Wheel Inn, Ralston. Born on February 18, 1932 in Hillsgrove, Pa. he was a son of Donald E. and Sadie M. Little Barbour. Surviving besides his wife are a son; Theodore R. (Tracey) of Williamsport; daughters, Christine B. (Brendan) Kavanagh of Danbury, Conn. and Andrea B. (Donald) Wandling of Norcross, Ga.; brother, Donald (Peggy) Barbour Jr. of Redwood City, Calif.; sister, Dorothy J. (Max) Dangle of Montoursville and nine grandchildren. A graveside service will be Wednesday 2 p.m. in Hillsgrove Cemetery with Rev. Robert Carver, church pastor officiating. No visitation. The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to the Hillsgrove Cemetery Assoc., Hillsgrove, PA or the charity of one’s choice. Knight-Confer Funeral Home.

–HELEN FETHERBAY BEINLICH, 86, a former Sullivan County resident passed away Nov. 6, 2001 in Fort Walton, Fla. She is the widow of the former Sheriff Edwin R. Beinlich, who preceded her in death on May 2, 1972. She was born in Roselle, N.J. on May 24, 1915, a daughter of the late Lee and Elsie Schifl Fetherbay. She moved to Sullivan County when she was two years old. She was a member of Redeemer United Church of Christ in Dushore and belonged to the Women’s Guild and was a member of the Sullivan County Republican Women. At one time, she was Chief Deputy Sheriff. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Louise Beinlich of Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and George Inklebarger of Florida; sister, Grace Borek of Columbia Cross Roads; brother, David Fetherbay of Florida; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, George Fetherbay of North Carolina and Donald and Willis Fetherbay, both of Dushore. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Mountain Ash Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations or contributions may be made to Redeemer United Church of Christ, Dushore or a charity of ones choice in Mrs. Beinlich’s memory. Arrangements were entrusted to the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore.

Willis (Bill) R. Fetherbay, 76, of Dushore, PA died Wednesday, May 6, 1998 in the Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon, PA. Born in Forksville on December 10, 1921 he was the son of the late Lee and Elsie Schiffl Fetherbay. He graduated from Estella High School. He was an aircraft mechanic in the US Army Air Force. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Doris Cook Fetherbay; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Paul Bird of Jonestown, PA; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Marlene Fetherbay of Lancaster, PA; three grandchildren; a brother, David Fetherbay of Palm Bay, FL; sisters, Helen Beinlich and Mary Ester of Florida; and Grace Borek of Columbia Cross Roads, PA. He was preceded in death by brothers, George and Donald Fetherbay. Funeral services were held May 11 in the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Zion Chapel in Dushore with the Rev. Eddie Nilsen officiating and interment to be in Fairview Cemetery, Dushore. There were full military honors accorded by the American Legion Post No. 996. Arrangements were by the Russell McHenry Funeral Home in Dushore. Donations or contributions may be made to the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Zion Chapel, Carpenter St., Dushore in Bill's memory.

Olga's fist husband, Valentine Cott, was the son of Clarence G. Cott and the grandson of Joshua George Cott. Joshua in turn was a son of the original immigrant, Henry Cott, of German origin. We can find the Cott family in the 1930 Federal census for Elkland, PA:

VALENTINE COTT, 84 of Sullivan Terrace, Dushore passed away on March 2, 1999 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda. Born on Feb. 14, 1915 in Sullivan County he was a son of the late Clarence and Lenora Heinze Cott. Prior to his retirement 19 years ago, he had worked as an automotive mechanic. He had owned and operated his own garage in the Forksville area and later worked throughout the area, including many years for the Fitzpatrick and Lamberts Ford dealership in Dushore. Mr. Cott had been a lifetime resident of the Sullivan County area. He had been a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and a social member of the Montoursville American Legion. In the early 1950s Valentine built and drove his own stock car and raced throughout the local area, a member of the Racing Association. He left surviving; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Mary Cott of Montoursville; daughter, Judy Lee Epler of New Albany; five grandchildren, Suzette O'Neil, Annette Fowler, Babette Bender, Jason R. Cott and Necole Lea Cott; three great-grandchildren, Stephanie Lane, Kelby O'Neil and Riley O'Neil; a great-grandnephew, K. Michael Norton; several nieces, nephews and a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Jenny Cott of Williamsport. Valentine was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Linewood [sic: should be Clarence "Lynwood" Cott--see obit for his wife, and a picture of his sawmill, at end of page] and two sisters, Revenda Williams and Betty Smith. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 7, 1999 at 2 p.m. in the St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Overton, Pa. with the Rev. Robert W. Martin officiating. Interment will be held at the Elkland Friends Cemetery in Shunk, Pa. at the convenience of the family. The family will provide flowers; memorials may be directed to the Dushore Ambulance Company, P.O. Box 517, Dushore, Pa. in Mr. Cott's memory.

J. G. Cott
Was born in Springfield township, Bradford county, Aug. 21, 1854. He was a son of Henry A. and Elizabeth (Shapel) * Cott. Henry A. Cott was a native of Saxony, Germany. When he was 18 years of age he came to America, locating first at Buffalo, N.Y., and later in Springfield township, Bradford county, and in 1861 purchased a farm in Fox township,where he remained until his death. J.G. Cott located on the William Norton farm in Fox township, which he sold, and in 1887 purchased the farm near Lincoln Falls, which he now owns, and to which he has added more land. Mr. Cott has always taken a prominent part in public affairs and in 1901 was elected Sheriff of Sullivan county, when he moved to LaPorte, where he expects to remain during his term of office. Mr. Cott married Lucetta J. McCarty, who was born June 20, 1854. She was a daughter of Thomas and Chole ** (Wilcox) McCarty, of Elkland township. Thomas McCarty was the youngest son of Joel and Ellen (Roberts) McCarty, who located in Elkland township about 1900. To Mr. and Mrs. Cott have been born six children: Ellen M., married Jacob Griess ***, of LaPorte; John H., of Lincoln Falls; Hannah M., married Harry Heess [see obit below], of Elkland township; Fredrica E., Clarence G., and Miriam, at home.

John H. Cott
Was born in Fox township, March 29, 1878. He is a son of J.G. and Lucetta J. (McCarty) Cott, of Elkland township. Mr. Cott has charge of his father's farm while the latter is serving as sheriff of Sullivan county. John H. Cott married Lizzie McCarty in 1900. She is a daughter of Thomas W. and Myrtle V. (Grange) McCarty. Thomas W. McCarty was a son of Aaron and Elizabeth (Pardoe) McCarty. Myrtle V. Grange was a daughter of John W. and Eliza (Vough) Grange, of Elkland township. To Mr. and Mrs. John H. Cott has been born one child, Francis.

She was born June 17, 1907 in Elkland Township, Sullivan County, a daughter of Harry A. and Hanna M. Cott Heess. Ruth was a lifelong member of the Elkland Friends Meeting, Elkland Township. Surviving are a son, William M. Burgess, Forksville; two daughters; Virginia Pletcher, State College and Florabell Watts, Hershey; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Anna Morgan of Shunk. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Mark on Oct. 2, 1987, a brother, Kermit Heess and two sisters; Gertrude Heess and Dorothy Neece. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Elkland Friends Meeting, c/o Mrs. Dorothy Rexer, Box 1216 RR 1, Forksville, Pa. Arrangements are under the direction of the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, Canton.

Helen V. Cott, age 90, of Forksville RR 1, passed away in the early morning of Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004 at Dar-Way Nursing Home in Estella, Pa.
She was born on Nov. 18, 1913, in Shrewsbury Township a daughter of the late Harry and Maude Secules Montague. Helen has been a lifetime resident of Sullivan County.
On Nov. 21, 1934 she was united in marriage with Lynwood Cott. Her husband Lynwood preceded her in death on October 23, 1981.
She was a member of the Elkland Friends Meeting Church, and was a member of the Forksville, Hillsgrove, and Shunk Fire Companies.
She enjoyed her time spent sewing, baking, tending her flower garden, fishing and the outdoors. She was also supportive and helped her husband with the farming.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-laws: Louise and James Rinker, of Forksville, Pa., Dorothy and Malyn Norton, of Shunk, Pa.; a sister-in-law: Glenna Montague, of Strawbridge, Pa.; grandchildren: Ellen Lazur, of Selinsgrove, Jack Dymond, of Dushore, Tony Rinker, of Spring City, Cindy Norton, of Dushore, Mike Norton, of Forksville, Lori Newman, of Shunk, Kelly Norton, of Billingham, WA, Peggy Savage, of New Albany; great grandchildren: Jason Purdy, Natlie Dymond, Katie Dymond, A.J. Rinker, Ava Rinker, Kimberly and Josh Norton, Jamie and Kally McBride, Renee and Nicole Arment, and Zachery Norton.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, 12:00 noon in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter Street, Dushore, Pa., with the Rev. Robert Brown, pastor officiating.
Interment will follow in the Elkland Friends Cemetery, Elkland, Pa.,br> Friends and family are invited to call on Tuesday morning, February 17, 2004 at McHenry Funeral Home in Dushore from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any local fire company in Mrs. Cott's memory.

** As a historical digression, Bob Sweeney, the Sullivan County Genealogical Web Page coordinator, points out a connection with his own family and Ira Cott, listed in the Cott famly genealogy above. In January 1904, Bob's grandmother, Agnes Elizabeth Kelly, of Overton, PA wanted to marry Peter Francis Sweeney of Ringdale, PA. However, Agnes was only 18 years old, and both her parents had passed away. She was therefore a ward of the local court in such matters and required the formal written release of her court-appointed guardian, Ira Cott, in order to marry. The release was granted.

WILMER (BEN) KOBBE Wilmer (Ben) Kobbe, 68, of Troy, PA died July 6, 1990 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. He was born September 28, 1921 in Overton, the son of Ernest and Edith Chapman Kobbe. Ben retired from American LaFrance in 1983 after 26 years of employment. In his retirement years, he was a USA Today carrier. He was a member of the Calvary Alliance Chapel in Canton. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Frances Dreste Kobbe; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Donna Kobbe of East Troy; Edward Kobbe of Breesport, NY, Richard and Barb Kobbe of East Troy, Fred and Cathy Kobbe of Norfolk, VA; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Steve Bastion of Alba, Karen and Charles Kelly of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers, John Kobbe of Burlington, Milo Kobbe of Binghamton, Leonard Kobbe of New Albany; sister, Mrs. Myrtle Keeney, New Albany. He was predeceased by a twin brother of 11 months, Willard Kobbe, and other brothers, Francis, Earl and Larue Kobbe. Funeral services were held at the Vickery Funeral Home in Troy July 10 with the Rev. Ronald Kellyy officiating and burial to be in Windfall Cemetery. GERALD A. REED, 70, Williamsport died July 12, 1992 in Williamsport Hospital. Born November 24, 1921 in Roaring Branch, he was the son of Fred C. and Edna E. Kobbe Reed. Mr. Reed was a retired employee of the former Marvel Mills/Syntex. He was a member of the Canton Moose Lodge and the South Williamsport Senior Citizens, a member of the trinity United Methodist Church, an Army Veteran of World War II, receiving a Purple Heart for injuries suffered in Germany and an avid bowler. Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor E. Heinze Reed in Sept. 1984. Surviving are his wife of seven years, Edna R. Engle; two sons, Gerald Brion * of Montoursville and Miles Reed, Roaring Branch; five daughters, Phyllis Zarzyczny, Linda Black, Donna Reidy, and Rita Van Black, Donna Reidy and Rita Van Sant, all of Williamsport, Mary Simmers, Erie; twin step-sons, John H. Engle, Jersey Shore and Joseph C. Engle, Williamsport; one step-daughter, Kathleen Patt, Williamsport; five brothers, Frederick, Canton, Leroy, Liberty, Carl, Trout Run and James and Dan, both of Linden; six sisters, Margaret Lusk, Mary Brion and Lydia Roupp, all of Williamsport, Marcella Skelly, Millerton, Elma Faulkerson, Roaring Branch and Betty Reibson, Forksville; 16 grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral was held at the Sanders Funeral Home, Williamsport. Burial was in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery.

Her also surmises that Gerald's second wife Edna had been previously married to an Engle before marying Gerald; hence the two Engle step-children named in this obit. His sister Betty Jane Reed married Milo Kenneth Reibson and has been frequently listed in The Sullivan Review in connection with Conservation and Agricultural associations in Sullivan County.

BOYLES -BELTHA KOBBE, 77, Forksville, RR2 passed away January 19, 2000 unexpectedly at her winter home in Lakeland, FL. Born on May 25, 1922 in Elkland Township, Sullivan County she was the daughter of the late Lynn and Grace Brown Boyles. On July 8, 1939 she married Francis Kobbe. Mr. and Mrs. Kobbe had a loving marriage and had celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. Francis preceded her in death in April of 1988. She was a lifetime resident of Sullivan County, was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Elkland Twp. Other memberships included; Canton Chapter No. 71, Order of the Eastern Star, the Elkland Grange and the Sullivan County Senior Extension. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and making handcrafts. Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law; Delos and Betty Kobbe, Catawissa, PA, Norman and Elaine Kobbe, Montgomery, PA, Alan and Beverly Kobbe, Milledgeville, GA, Durwood and Shirley Kobbe, New Albany, PA; three sisters, Ona Gunter, Plant City, FL, Rita Thomas, Binghamton, NY, Dora McCarty, Forksville, PA; brother, Sheldon Boyles, Wysox; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her brother, Torrance Boyles in 1996. Funeral services were held January 24 in St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Elkland Township with the Rev. Robert W. Martin her pastor officiating. Interment followed in Forksville Cemetery. An Eastern Star Funeral service was held Sunday evening at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral home, Dushore by members of Canton Chapter #71, Order of the Eastern Star. EARL CARL KOBBE, 68 died Monday at the Bradford County Manor following a lingering illness. He was born in Laquin, the son of Ernest A. and Edith Chapman Kobbe on July 22, 1917. He was an employee of the Remington Rand Corp., Elmira for a number of years. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Army. Surviving are two daughters, Linda Balmer of Pine City, NY and Ann Kobbe of Elmira; three sons, Donald, Dennis and Daniel, all of Elmira; one sister, Mrs. Lester (Myrtle) Keeney of New Albany; five brothers, John of Burlington, Francis of Forksville, Wilmer of Troy, Milo of Binghamton, Leonard of New Albany; three grandchildren; one aunt, Lavina Chapman of Towanda; two uncles, Manley Chapman of Towanda and Alfred Chapman of New Albany; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, LaRue and Willard. Funeral and committal services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore with the Rev. Robert W. Brown, pastor of St. Peter's Church of Christ, Hugo Corners officiating. Ernest A. Kobbe, 85, Elkland Township, Sullivan County, New Albany RD 2, died Sept. 12, 1975, at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, following a long illness.
He was born July 16, 1890, in Elkland Township Sullivan County, son of the late Wilhelm C. and Minnie Beinlich Kobbe. He was a lifetime resident of Sullivan County.
He was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ at Hugo Corners. Mr. Kobbe had been a farmer his entire lifetime and had retired in 1971. In addition to farming he had at one time worked for the highway department and a number of sawmills in the area.
His wife, the former Edith Chapman, preceded him in death by seven years.
He is survived by seven sons, John M. of Burlington, Earl C. of Troy RD 3, Francis R. of Forksville RD 1, Wilmer E. of Troy RD 3, LaRue J. of New Albany RD 2, Milo C. of Binghamton, and Leonard L. of New Albany RD 2; one daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Keeney of New Albany, RD 1; three sisters, Mrs. Frederika Bailey of Columbia Cross Roads, Mrs. Edna Reed of Canton, and Mrs. Lavina Chapman of Columbia Cross Roads; two brothers, Delbert of Montoursville and Alfred of New Albany RD 2; 35 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Hugo Corners, with the Rev. James E. Johnson, pastor of the Lewisburg United Church of Christ, officiating. Interment was in the Hugo Corners Cemetery.

KOBBE , John M. Age 87 of Burlington, PA, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at the Bradford County Manor, Troy, PA. He was born on April 5, 1914 in Hugo Corners, Sullivan County, PA, a son of the late Ernest and Edith (Chapman) Kobbe. John was a life long farmer on the Kobbe family farm and also worked at many other farms in the area. He also worked on the fire truck assembly at American LaFrance, Inc., in Elmira, NY, retiring in 1977 after 25 years of service. John was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church in Burlington, PA. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, the Wetona Grange, and the Bradford County Old Timers. John enjoyed bowling in the couple's league for many years. He also enjoyed softball, camping and fishing. John, a very loving father and grandfather, is survived by his son, James E. (Beverly "Peg") Kobbe of Towanda, PA; daughters, Jo Ann (William) Avery, Jr. of Gillett, PA and Sharon L. Giles (Jim Weaver) of Elizabethtown, PA; 15 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; brothers, Milo C. (Norma) Kobbe of Florida and Leonard L. (Virginia) Kobbe of New Albany, PA; several sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews; aunt Lavina Chapman of Springfield, PA; special friend, Dorothy Ellsworth of Burlington, PA. Pierce, Fla., Blanche and Doug Engates of Clemont, and Milo Jr. and Linda Kobbe of Hudson, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Leonard Kobbe of Overton; as well as several sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Myrtle enjoyed time spent crafting and crocheting. In February 1990, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Keeney. Charles Michael McGroarty, age 75, of New Albany RR 1 (Laddsburg) passed away on Thursday evening, Feb. 20, 2003, at his home.
He was born on March 31, 1927, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., a son of the late Edward and Catherine Byron McGroarty.
His family moved to Overton, where he was raised, and was a graduate of St. Basil's Catholic School, Class of 1945.
On Feb. 8, 1953, Charles married the former Marjorie Keeney. They had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
During his lifetime, he was employed as a mechanic and a truck driver.
With his ancestors from Ireland, Charles always had the luck of the Irish with him. With his strong faith in our Lord and his Irish luck he was able to conquer many battles he faced throughout his own life.
A man with a positive outlook for life, he always found good in everyone and never turned anyone down when they needed help or words of encouragement.
His love for and interest in automobiles always kept him busy, whether it was repairing a car or tractor for his friends or rebuilding his own first car, a "1917 Model T." He found much enjoyment having his sons interested in his same passion for cars.
He also enjoyed being with his family. A man with a kind heart full of love, a gentle smile and a kind word made him a man that everyone loved to be with.
He taught his family about the important things that mattered in life. It wasn't material things that were important; it was honesty, faith, and the love we should have for family and friends, and of course a little "Irish Luck."
He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Overton and was a member of the Antique Automotive Club of America.
Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years, Marjorie Keeney McGroarty, at home; his children and their spouses: Michael (Peggy) McGroarty, Maureen Maynard, Matthew (Tina) McGroarty and Edward (Shellie) McGroarty; grandchildren: Josh (Karen) McGroarty, Beau McGroarty, Lacey and Kira McGroarty, and Dalton and Dylan Maynard; and two great-grandchildren: Mason and Haley Jo McGroarty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James McGroarty; by sisters Mary Catherine Nolan and Roseanne Pulio; and by an infant sister, Theresa McGroarty.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at 11 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, in Overton, with the Rev. Kenneth Seagar as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Overton Township.
Friends and family are invited to call on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Dale Eugene Kobbe, 51; Matthew Scott Kobb, 6; and Brandon Thomas Kobbe, 2 of Burlington, PA died Tuesday, March 5, 1991 as the result of a fire. Born June 25, 1939 in Sayre, Dale Eugene Kobbe was the son of John and Bertha Gernert Kobbe. He served with the US Army and was a life member of AMVETS. He was a member of Towanda American Legion Post 42, the Towanda VFW Post 1568 and the Monroeton Rod and Gun Club. He was employed with the DuPont Company in Towanda. Mr. Kobbe is survived by son, Michael Kobbe of Trout Run RD 1; daughters, Angela Kobbe of Sunrise, FL and Bertha Kobbe of Burlington; his father, John Kobbe of Burlington; special friend, Dorothy Ellsworth of Burlington; five grandchildren; a brother, James Kobbe of Towanda RD 4; sisters, JoAnn Avery of Gillett RD 1 and Sharon Giles of Elizabethtown, PA. He was predeceased by a brother, Billy Kobbe, in 1947. Matthew Scott Kobbe is survived by his mother, Bertha Kobbe of Burlington; maternal grandmother, Bonnie Inserra of Margate, FL; paternal grandparents, Robert and Blanche Shock Sr. of Elmira; maternal great-grandfather, John Kobbe of Burlington; and maternal great-grandmother, Margaret Bastion of Ralston. Combined funeral services were held March 9 at the Vickery Funeral Home in Troy with the Rev. John Feaster officiating and burial to be in Bradford County Memorial Park. Full military honors were performed by Troy American Legion Post 49 and Troy VFW Post 8675 for Dale Eugene Kobbe during the service.
