GIRLS’
VARSITY
The
year 1924 was the first in the history of Grove City High School to see
a lively group of girls bloom into a team, which was to show Grove City
how to carry honors. The girls began and ended a very successful season,
winning three games out of eight.
The
first game was scheduled with Sandy Lake. Even if they are good swimmers
they could not beat Grove City in basketball and the final whistle
showed Grove City winners of their first game on a score of 16-14.
The
next game was played January 18 with Sharpsville. It was the first game
away and they lost. Beaten by twelve points. The score was 24-12, but
the girls came out with a grim smile and more determined than ever to
win. They had had their metal tried.
The
next game played January 22 with Farrell, here. The Fates were against
them and stole the score again. The game ended 9-30 in favor of the
visitors.
By
this time the G. C. H. S. was beginning to think that the Girls’ Team
was in the “Well” and that there was no Ladder for them to crawl
out. On March 7 they made their second trip—this time to Greenville.
Here the G. C. H. S. was shown how deep the “Well” was—the score
was 62-4.
Next
Greenville played here. The “good luck ring” was broken just as the
first whistle blew so of course the game was lost. During the game it
seemed that the forwards did not seem to realize that the idea of the
game is to put the ball through the basket, as they were told later by
the coach. The score was 45-3.
Then
they visited Farrell. All set for victory some of the girls, to be more
certain, seized a fellow in order that he might ahunting go to kill a
rabbit and cut off his feet to offer the team for good luck, because up
to this time they had needed something of the sort. The game was
scheduled February 22. Everything went fine the first half which ended
with the score 8-6 Farrell. The team was sure that they would win, hut
to the disappointment of all it was discovered that the rabbit was not
killed in the cemetery and therefore would not bring the expected good
luck. Again Grove City lost, 9-29.
Just
two more games and they simply must he won. A kind friend of the team
presented it with a charm, known as the “Monkey of Good Luck,” just
before the Sharpsville game. This game played February 26 and, thanks to
the dear old Monkey, was won by six points, 21-15.
The
last game was played at Sandy Lake and still under the charm of the
talisman, the Girls’ Varsity of Grove City High School won 18.
