Descendants of John Lord I

Generation No. 1

1.  JOHN2 LORD I  (UNKNOWN1) was born Bet. 1730 - 1750 in England, or Kingston, Ulster Co., New York, and died Bet. 1800 - 1810 in Delaware or Sullivan Co., New York.  He married INDIAN WOMAN VANDUNK Bet. 1770 - 1772 in New Jersey.  She was born Bet. 1755 - 1758 in New Jersey, and died in Prob.  Delaware Co., New York.

                                                                                       JOHN  LORD  I

John Lord  was enumerated on the 1790 Federal Census, living in Middletown, Ulster Co., New York. He had a son over 16 (this was most likely John, Jr., b. 1775)   he is known to have a daughter, Margaret, but she was not included --missed,   visiting or working in another household. How long he had been in  Ulster Co. isn't known.  Family lore (descendants of John II)  says he  stowed away on a ship from England, having been punished by his father.  This may be a true story, possibly attributed to the wrong generation.  Supposedly, he did 7 years apprenticeship in "the mines" ---information that meshes  with the records of Deliverance Adams, so  this may easily be the time spent in New Jersey, written of below.

Records located on Muster Rolls of New York Provincial Troops 1755, record John Lord being recruited as a laborer to "help build forts and remove encroachments" on his Majesty's lands to the  north of Albany. He worked under Captain John Slap from Connecticut, and on 5 Dec 1755 was paid wages for 32 days work. (Thanks to Art Barber for this research note)

John Lord I and Deliverance Adams both served in the Revolutionary War. John Lord is also attributed with service in the Militia, his location being  Kingston area.  After they were mustered out, it appears they stayed together, both working the tin mines of New Jersey, which would be in the (current) Cranbury Lake area, or in and around what is currently Ringwood,  Mahwah, New Jersey.  It was while here they met,  married, sisters,(possibly cousins), who were Native American Indians. Deliverance wife's name survived, she was a VanDunk--the Dutch, and the Swedes, commonly intermarried Indians.  It would easily follow, the men-- having worked and lived together-- would meet, court, marry,  women who were related.

John Lord I might  have married into the Fransisco, (Sisco)   De Groat (DeGrauw) , Milligan(Milliken) families -- names common to the Indians of that area,( as was the name Gould, DeWitt,Thorne,Perry, Johnson,  etc.) However,  examining available records,  Fransisco, DeGroat and Milligan appear to be more common as neighbors  at a later period. In so doing, she would still have been related to Deliverance's wife.  The current tribal roles of the Indians of  Southern Tier New York, Northern Jersey, (Ramapo Mountain Indians, located in Rockland and Orange Cos, New York, Bergan and Passaic Cos., New Jersey) dating from the mid-1700s, trace the families of VanDunk, DeGroat, Conklin, Sisco/ Fransisco, (among many others) forward to this day, all being  inter-related.

Research by the Archaeology  Department of the State of Delaware, under the able  direction  of Ned Heite, and the knowledge,  records, of the New Jersey Indian Commission under James Lone Bear Revy substantiate the migration of some of these families upwards out of the Del Marva Peninsula, through Ulster, Orange, Rockland, Delaware, Sullivan, counties.

Both John Lord I, his close friend -  Deliverance Adams,  lived in the area of Mamakating, Ulster Co. New York where  most of their children were born.  John Lord I is said to have  come into  the area now named after him, Lordville, New York - about 1800.  Under a Pennsylvania Land Warrant, he had purchased land around Equinunk from  the Mitchell brothers, Jacob, Joseph and James, who were sons of Nathan Mitchell, his wife, Elizabeth Ross. (she born in NJ)

Altho Marjorie Anderson's  book gives Jeremiah Lord as father to John I, with Lois Thomas as his mother, with all the Thomas connections, it seemed a likely idea----no other information corroborates this. Thorough and time consuming research have not turned a mention of this nor could a hired researcher turn up the referenced document.  No one in the family used the name Jeremiah for a boy--ever.  No one names a girl Lois-- giving  appearance to the belief they weren't even kinfolk.  There were several ADAMS families in the area--who lived near one another.  (3 separate groups) There were more than a few LORDS-also at least 2 and possibly 3, distinct lines)---definitely, not all were related.

Cora Fanny Hopkins Kellam, (1860-1950) stated, 1949,  "my   great grandmother was a VanDunk, her sister or cousin, was the wife of the John Lord they named Lordville after."

Be-ti-a VanDunk is listed in the Bible of James' youngest son, Samuel, (note dated 1834)  as being full blood Minisink Indian-- her sister/cousin would be, also.

Was John Lord I married more than once--possible.  Even though there were 3 Lord families in and around the area in question, John Lord I his descendants had no known connection to the others, and no interaction that has shown so far.

These two families, Lord and Adams, other old settler names, are joined at the hip for all the generations.  It appears solving the puzzle has to be done by working as many groups as possible.

                                                                                           LORDVILLE

"A station on the Erie road, one mile below Equinunk. It received its name from John Lord, an old and honored settler of the place, lately deceased. His son Alvah has been for several years past, till last year, supervisor. Richard Lord, a brother of John, for a long time occupied and owned the farm opposite the upper end of Equinunk Island, and succeeded Josiah Russ.

"Just east of the village of Lordville the Ancestral soil begins.  The first place you approach on the North side of the road now cleared and the house now standing, somewhat remodeled and improved, was built by Angeline Jensen's cousin, William Ellsworth, husband of  a daughter of Sarah Adams Cole.  They lived there until another cousin, Dee Lord, occupied it."

The next place on the South side of the road cleared, and the house built by Fred Hall. His wife was Jane Ellsworth, another  cousin of Angeline Jensen.  That was a very quaint little  house.  Adjoining it on the same side of the road was the house now known as the Adams Homestead. It was built by Moses Hughes, whose wife was Betsey Lord from whom my father (Benjamin Adams) bought it.  It has been in the possession of the Adams family ever since.  (this in the 1930s)

The house on the North side of the road opposite the Adams Homestead was built by Rolla Adams, brother to Cora Adams Ballard.  Rolla's wife was Hattie Cole, a daughter of Sarah Adams Cole.

                                                                     THE OLD  RED  LORD  HOUSE

Where we are now assembled (Lordville) is on land given by Abe Lord to his son, William Lord.  The ground was cleared and the home built by himself and his wife, Polly Adams Lord, my father's (Benjamin Adams) sister.  The adjoining property of two hundred acres was cleared and the house known as the Old Red House, built by Abe Lord.  His wife was Rebecca, a sister to  Angeline Jensen's mother (who was Esther Cole perhaps Lord).

Leaving this place and following up the lower road, just above the fork of the road, was a small house opposite a big saw mill which stood for years on the left side of the road.  At one time, Jonathan Adams (son of James and Phebe (Thorne)  Adams lived there, and it is where his beloved wife, Lydia, died, for whom he wrote much memorial verse and mourned (her) to his dying day.

Following up this road we reach another road, turning to the north, known as the Jay Lord road.  Up to this road, a mile or more, less,  one finds a large farm cleared and the house built by Jay Lord, son of Lydia Adams Lord.

Back to the Lordville-French Woods road one finds a famous spring of water known as "The big Watering Trough".  Opposite was a mill, near this was a log house built by Zillard Minard, occupied for years by himself and his wife, Nancy Lord, Abraham Lord's daughter.

Back and to the Southeast of the Lordville- French Woods road, we see where a small house stood.  This farm of 100 acres was known as the Wallace Adams place.  Adjoining this on the right is a farm known as Dodge Maria Adams farm.  Opposite this farm, across the creek to the left, is a farm known as the  Benjamin Adams farm. It was cleared and occupied by  Benjamin Adams, his wife, Angeline Jensen Adams.  Adjoining this farm is a farmhouse still standing, which was (if not built by him) occupied by Lydia Adams, her husband, Marshall Lord. (In Dr. Ballard's time, it was occupied for years by Marshall Lord, Lydia Adams Lord's son).

Adjoining this farm  and the big Adams farm is a large farm which was once occupied by Freeman Jensen, Angeline Jensen's brother, his wife, Clarissa Adams, who was  Benjamin Adams sister.  (sister and brother married brother and sister-you'll see a lot of that in this book!).  The other farm adjoining this farm belonged to a relative of Angeline Jensen Adams family.

Close to this  is the French woods settlement which was one of the first "Back From the River Settlements" cleared.  It seemed to be a very promising location.  Two groups of men erected mills and made extensive preparations to conduct large business transactions there, but they became involved in debt; the mills rotted down, the forest crept over the sites.  (above taken from  speech by Cora Adams Ballard, at Lordville, NY in the  late 1930s.  Slight interjections in  editing for clarification--original  on file with author, and with Agnes Whitaker, former Historian, Hancock, NY-- copies with various relatives.

  Notes for INDIAN WOMAN VANDUNK:

John Lord's wife was said to be a sister or cousin to Deliverance Adams wife.  Both women had met these two men  when they were working the tin mines in New    Jersey.        Her age is estimated from the age of Be-ti-a, which is recorded.  Her children's ages, where they are given on census, are usually close as to accuracy.  The others are estimated given known children's ages, marriages.

 Generation No. 2

  2.  JOHN3 LORD II (JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born Bet. 1772 - 1775 in Ulster Co., New York, and died December 10, 1837 in Lordville, Delaware Co., New York.  He married LYDIA ADAMS Bet. 1795 - 1797 in Delaware Co., New York, daughter of DELIVERANCE ADAMS and BE-TI-A VANDUNK.  She was born 1775 in Orange Co.,  New York, and died Aft. 1855 in Lordville, Delaware Co., New York.

  Notes for JOHN LORD II:

The Lord-Adams family connection had gone back a long time.  Probably since Connecticut days, altho this is only the author's speculation, with no proof as far as documents go.

The Adams-Lord Lumbering project had been set up and  run by the elder Lord, with Deliverance Adams. They hired many of their  friends for work with this.  Deliverance, the Lords  visited back and forth,  evidenced by family letters, oral history.  Some years ago, I sent much information along these lines to Agnes Whitaker, also, to Eleanor Keesler for their files. Marjorie Thomas Anderson  in her   book mentions being told some of the foregoing by Mrs. Keesler.  Proven facts are the continuing over marriage of the two families, their  double, triple cousinships.

John Lord settled  in Lordville, Delaware Co., New York  about  1800. His will, which does not mention his wife--  very  much alive, appearing on the 1850 Federal, and  1855 New York State census---mentions the "Island in the river".  His will, filed in Delhi, New York, gives to his children Freeman A. , Diana, James A.,  200 acres each, Freeman's containing the house in which he, John, now lived.  Which would explain for certain why  wife/Mother, Lydia, was residing with Freeman in 1850, 1855 census.

Hannah, Lucinda, Phoebe, Richard received 2/10 of the balance.  John Lord, Jr., was named executor.

Notes for LYDIA ADAMS:      Lydia and her husband, John Lord II lived near Hancock, New York, where he died.

She  was living with her son, Freeman, in 1855, Delaware Co. Census, town of Hancock.  She stated , or was stated for her, she was 80, and born in Orange Co., New York.  They are said to be buried in Stockport, NY near Lordville-- no stones have been found for them.

Children of JOHN LORD and LYDIA ADAMS are:

9.                i.       RICHARD4 LORD, b. Abt. 1797, Mamakating, Ulster Co., New York ?.

Notes for LYDIA LORD:        It is not known if there were any children of this marriage.

Notes for LASKON/LARKIN KELLAM:    Laskon's name is  spelled every which way, he was also referred to as "Luke".  He may have been  named for the Lukins family. It's not clear (currently)  whether  it was this  Lukins/Laskon who  was in the Civil War, or the  Laskon Kellam  b. 1839/40.

Family #64,page 86, 1850 Manchester Twnp. of the Federal Census.

  14. viii.PHOEBE LORD, b. Abt. 1815, Lordville, Delaware Co., , New York; d. 1899, Delaware Co., New York.

  3.  NATHAN (NATHANIEL)3 LORD (JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born Bet. 1774 - 1777 in Ulster/Delaware Co., New York.  He married UNKNOWN

  Notes for NATHAN (NATHANIEL) LORD:

Nathan (Nathaniel) doesn't appear in records, and the only  knowledge is vague.  That he died, having gone on a trip down river, never returned. Who raised the children?   Where did his wife go? Were there more besides the ones who seem to have stayed. an Ohio Lord of N.E. Pennsylvania researcher, not tied in as yet,  seemed to feel he went to western NY and then on west.  Possible.  All CONJECTURE at this point.

Children of NATHAN LORD and UNKNOWN are:

17.              i.       ISAAC4 LORD, b. 1810.

18.             ii. JOHN LORD, b. Bet. 1812 - 1818, New York State; d. Aft. 1880, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania.

  4.  MARGARET3 LORD (JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born Bet. 1780 - 1782 in Ulster Co., New York, and died December 1864 in Lordville, Delaware Co., New York.  She married (1) BENJAMIN THOMAS Bet. 1799 - 1800 in Lordville, Delaware Co., New York, son of AARON THOMAS and ELIZABETH DAVIS.  He was born Bet. 1778 - 1779 in Connecticut or Pennsylvania, and died Bet. May - August 1811 in Hancock, Delaware Co., New York.  She married (2) MOSES THOMAS December 29, 1811 in Hancock, Delaware Co., New York, son of AARON THOMAS and ELIZABETH DAVIS.  He was born Bet. 1789 - 1790 in Pennsylvania, and died Bet. August 11, 1858 - 1859 in Lordville, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania.

Notes for MARGARET LORD:     Margaret Lord married brothers, first Benjamin, then  Moses.  She is buried in the Stockport, New York Cemetery, next to daughter, Susan, who married a Knight.

Notes for BENJAMIN THOMAS:      Family Lived next to  John Lord in Ulster Co., then all were in Lordville on the 1800 Census. After the death of his Mother, Elizabeth, Benjamin helped his father  , especially taking care of Moses, he being 10 years old.   When he purchased the lumbering tract, 1810 (court house records) they were living in Buckingham Co., Pennsylvania.  After this purchase, they moved back to the Lordville area, he died shortly there after.  He may be buried in the  old cemetery in Lordville, but there is no stone to tell for certain.

Notes for MOSES THOMAS:      Benjamin Thomas died, and Moses married the widow  a few weeks short of the birth of her last child by her first husband, Moses brother. Margaret ultimately  had 9 children by Moses Thomas.   All these grew up to manhood, except one, who, at three years old, fell into a spring and was drowned. The Thomas family are very numerous in, around, Hancock." Source for quote: W. W.  Munsell

Actually, Moses married  his sister -in- law  shortly before her last child by her first husband, (his brother), was born. 1855 NY state census shows the birthplace of this couple.

Moses not only took over the care and rearing of his dead brothers 7 children,  he also took on the lumber tract, it's mortgage, selling the property in 1843 (court house records). When you realize Moses was some 11 years his brothers junior, about that much younger than Margaret, (Moses was 21 when they got married)  you have to give him a tremendous amount of credit--plus  Margaret  must have been some lady!  This story was  known in the family (not always happily) and appeared in an early Hancock newspaper. (clipping furnished  late 1970s by Agnes Whitaker)

Children of MARGARET LORD and BENJAMIN THOMAS are:

                   i.       JULIA4 THOMAS, b. 1801, Ulster or Delaware Co., New York.

ii.       AARON THOMAS, b. 1802, Ulster or Delaware Co., New York.

iii.ELSIRUS THOMAS, b. 1804, Delaware Co.., New York.

iv.JOHN THOMAS, b. 1806, Delaware Co.., New York.

                  v. SILAS THOMAS, b. 1808, Delaware Co.., New York.

vi.PRISCILLA THOMAS, b. March 10, 1810.

vii.BENJAMIN VI THOMAS, b. January 1812, Delaware Co.., New York.      Born  after the death of his father.

Children of MARGARET LORD and MOSES THOMAS are:

19. viii.SUSAN4 THOMAS, b. 1813, Hancock, Delaware Co., New York; d. April 01, 1895.

ix.       GEORGE THOMAS, b. 1815; d. Drowned in the Delaware River..

                   x. JANE THOMAS, b. 1817, Hancock, Delaware Co., New York; m. UNKNOWN HUNTER.

                  xi. ISAAC THOMAS, b. 1819.

xii.MARTHA THOMAS, b. 1820.

xiii.GILBERT THOMAS, b. 1822.

20. xiv.HENRY HARPER THOMAS, b. December 1824, New York State; d. 1908, Delaware Co.., New York.

21. xv.MOSES THOMAS, b. 1829, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania.

  5.  JAMES3 LORD (JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born Bet. 1784 - 1789 in Ulster Co., Sullivan New York, and died Aft. 1870.  He married (1) UNKNOWN in Ulster/Delaware Co., New York.  She was born Bet. 1785 - 1790, and died Bef. 1817.  He married (2) MARY (POLLY) UNKNOWN in Probably New York State.  She was born 1793 in Sullivan Co.,  New York, and died Aft. 1880 in Manchester Twnsp, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania.

Notes for JAMES LORD:     An interesting comment is that  James  Mother was a 'Welsh Woman".  This is common among those of mixed ancestry, accounting  for the darker complexion/hair color.  Weslager made this comment in his  "History of the Delaware Indians"--as did Conrad Weiser, noted  interpreter and liason between settlers and the Mohawk Indians. Also common---there was no mention made of James wife, at least on the pages available, when writing about this family.

Phineas Goodrich makes the observation on page 227 of his  'Wayne County History" (reprint 1992)-- and states " James  was assessed, in 1812, as owning four acres of plow land and 439 acres of unimproved land, one house and one horse, although it is claimed he began in 1810."

James appears on the census, last time in 1870, Wayne Co.,

Notes for UNKNOWN:      Family lore says she was Delaware Indian, same family as  James 2nd wife. This was common-----Indian or not.  Considering the  wildness of the area,  makes common sense.

Children of JAMES LORD and UNKNOWN are:

22.              i.       JAMES4 LORD, b. 1808, Delaware Co.,  New York.

23.             ii.       PETER LORD, b. Abt. 1809, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania.

Children of JAMES LORD and MARY UNKNOWN are:

24. iii.ISAAC4 LORD, b. 1818, Manchester Township, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania.

25. iv.ABIJAH LORD, b. 1821, Lordville, Delaware Co., New York.

                  v. JANE LORD, b. Bet. 1824 - 1826, Manchester Township, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania.

26. vi.LUCY LORD, b. 1826.

vii.NANCY LORD, b. Bet. 1827 - 1832, Manchester Twnsp, Wayne Co., Pa.  Living with her Mother, sister, 1880,  age  48.

viii.ANGELINE LORD, b. 1829, Manchester Township, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania.

ix.       MARY ANNE LORD, b. 1835, Manchester Township, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania. Living with her mother, sister, Nancy, 1880,  age  45.

  6.  ELIZABETH3 LORD (JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born 1787.  She married FREDERICK WHEELER, son of ROYAL WHEELER, SR..  He was born 1785, and died in Hancock, Delaware Co., New York.

  Notes for FREDERICK WHEELER:

PARTRIDGE ISLAND AND ITS PIONEERS

This is an old lumbering and farming hamlet, some six or eight miles above Shehocken, on the Delaware River  east branch. Lemuel Mallory, a carpenter, was one of the first settlers. He resided here many years, and removed to Scott, Wayne county, PA. where his descendants now live. Ebenezer Wheeler came about 1792 from Massachusetts.

The ancestors of the Hancock and Tompkins Wheelers were among the early settlers of  Massachusetts. Three brothers came from Wales in 1738 -probably 1638], and settled in Concord. Their names were Timothy, Ephraim and Thomas,  all of whom distinguished themselves in the Indian wars of the time.  Their history, with that of their descendants, is closely interwoven, connected with that of many of the most distinguished families of New England.

"Thomas Wheeler,  "the elder" was buried at Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England in 1634. Of his twelve children by two marriages, the following seven came to New England in the 1630's:

Thomas, Elizabeth, Timothy, Susanna, Joseph, Ephraim, and Thomas (by second wife). Of these, both of the brothers Thomas and their brother Ephraim moved to Fairfield, Connecticut while the others remained in Concord, Massachusetts, except for the daughter Elizabeth, who settled in Lynn, Massachusetts, with her husband Allen Breed.

f "The Wheeler Family of Cranfield, England and Concord, Massachusetts and some Descendants of Sgt. Thomas Wheeler of Concord" by M. Wheeler Molyneaux (M. Wheeler Molyneaux, 4701 East Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90803-- $47.5) Connecticut Nutmegger June 1993 pg.. 85]

Captain Timothy Wheeler had two horses shot under him in one of the encounters of King Philip's  war. A Captain Timothy Wheeler in 1775 had charge of colonial stores at Concord,  saved them from capture.

One branch of the family settled in Brantford, Mass., before the Revolution. One, named William, had five sons, Ebenezer, James, William, John and Joseph, and died in Brantford. The widow married George Hubbell, who by his first wife had three sons, Edmund, George and Silas.

By a second wife he had three sons, Wheeler, Truman and Richard. In the last decade of the 18th century George Hubbell, with the family, left Massachusetts and came to Sidney, N.Y., where they stayed a few years (and where he is buried).

They next located at the mouth of Sands Creek near Shehocken, and in 1798 can be traced to Partridge Island. Here the Wheeler brothers settled and married, except John, who lived a bachelor and was finally, drowned.

Major Ebenezer Wheeler had one son, Ransom, and several daughters, all of whom married respectably. He died in 1814, aged 44.  He and his brother were remarkable for physical strength and endurance.   William, in 1804, married Eleanor Knox, of Massachusetts, a descendant or relative of General Knox, the Aide  of Washington,  living  at Partridge Island till 1814, when he removed to Deposit. (Broome Co., NY)

James had three sons, Leroy, Ebenezer and James; the first a physician, the second a lawyer, and the latter  a farmer, who occupies the homestead. The father died in 1854. Joseph Wheeler had three sons. Franklin, Milton and Rensselaer, the first two lawyers and the last son a farmer. He died in 1858.

Edmund Hubble settled at Ballstown, and George at Little Falls, near Hancock, Delaware Co., New York  where he married Paul Newton's daughter. They  had two sons, Jefferson and Chester. Chester, the  second son. was born in 1799,  is now living in Deposit. )1879)

Jefferson went to the Legislature, and removed afterward to Honesdale, Wayne Co.,  Pa. Silas went west.   Truman and Richard lived in Hancock for several years, then  removed to Tompkins.  Richard died there, while Truman moved to Philadelphia, where he died.

Several other Wheelers. relatives of the former, also came to Hancock early from Massachusetts.

Frederick Wheeler, father of Marvin and Royal Wheeler, first settled near Knight's, below Shehocken, and then went to Partridge Island.

Marvin Wheeler married Emily, daughter of Captain Conrad Edick, of Deposit. He left two sons, Frederick and Marvin D. One son, Clinton, had died before the father, and two daughters unmarried.

Royal Wheeler, a brother of Frederick, came to Hancock at the same time. He had two sons, Earl and Royal, the former a distinguished lawyer at Honesdale, Pa., now deceased.

One James Wheeler was known as "Fiddler Jim," to distinguish him from the other James, who was called "Tailor Jim." Little is known of his history. One Joseph Wheeler was known as "Hatter Joe," while the other was called "Innocent Joe." John Wheeler, cousin to bachelor John, after residing for some years at Partridge Island, removed to or near Barryville, New York.

Children of ELIZABETH LORD and FREDERICK WHEELER are:

                   i.       ROYAL4 WHEELER.

  7.  ABRAHAM (ABRAM)3 LORD (JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born Abt. 1793 in Ulster Co., New York, and died February 03, 1873 in Lordville, Delaware Co., New York.  He married REBECCA COLE February 17, 1816 in Delaware Co., New   York, daughter of UNKNOWN COLE and UNKNOWN LORD.  She was born Bet. 1796 - 1798 in Delaware Co.,  New York, and died May 19, 1877 in Lordville, Delaware Co., New York.

Notes for ABRAHAM (ABRAM) LORD:      Abram lists himself as a lumberman in the 1855 Delaware Co. Census.

Children listed as surviving, and confirmed, by  petition for administration of Abraham's estate,  2 June 1893.  Thanks go to  Art Barber, of Sullivan Co., for this information.

Notes for REBECCA COLE:         Rebecca's last name was first  reported to be "Jensen".   However, a letter from Cora Adams Ballard, daughter of  Benjamin Adams and Angeline Jensen,  a niece of  Freeman Jensen, who  married  Clarissa Adams, sister to Ben--stated, 1912, " My Maternal Grandmother was sister to Abraham Lord's wife, Rebecca."

This statement is also quoted in a speech Dr. Ballard gave in the 1930s at a Family Reunion in Hancock/Lordville.    Solomon Jensen is documentably Angeline Jensen's father (family letters, census records, family Bible) and Cora's grandfather---leaving little room for doubt as to " her Maternal Grandmother."

Rebecca was contemporary in age--a year apart, as noted in census records-- with Solomon Jensen, father to  Angeline, Freemen, et al.  Had she been  a Jensen, it would be more likely he was her brother-but this was not how the relationship was explained. They were both producing children at/ about the same time.

Esther/Hester  Cole is the wife of of Solomon Jensen, according to the records of Hancock--Clarence Zurn kindly went there and looked for me.--three descendants  records give her maiden name thus.

Using this information-- Rebecca,  sister to Esther, was a Cole, not a Jenson.

Given the oddities in  relationships--older cousins called Aunt, Uncle, Grandfather---Aunt's raising motherless children called Mother, sons-in-laws who were cousins referred to as  "much loved sons"---sorting out is definitely a challenge.

The records also state, in Dr. Ballards own hand, plus passed  down orally--Angeline Jenson was "half Delaware Indian".    As both men and women married  Indians,  the Jenson name could come from either parent.  Native men generally took the wife's name---much like  royalty/ nobles of old---when they did not have a last name of their own in the European tradition.  Many Native People were given names in the Dutch Reform Church.

  11.  DELANAH4 LORD (JOHN3, JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born 1805 in Lordville, Delaware Co., New York, and died Bef. 1880.  She married ROYAL JR. WHEELER Bet. 1825 - 1826 in Prob. Delaware Co., New York, son of ROYAL WHEELER, SR..  He was born 1800 in Delaware Co., New York, and died Aft. 1880 in Wayne Co., Pennsylvania.

Notes for ROYAL JR. WHEELER:

While this is not specific to Royal, it does give quite a bit of information regarding the family which might be helpful to anyone searching for this group.  It's from Munsell, can be found on-line at the Delaware Co. site:

                                                  PARTRIDGE ISLAND AND ITS PIONEERS

"""""This is an old lumbering and farming hamlet, some six or eight miles above Shehocken, on the east branch. Lemuel Mallory, a carpenter, was one of the first settlers. He resided here many years, and removed to Scott, Wayne county, PA. Where his descendants now live. Ebenezer Wheeler came about 1792 from Massachusetts.

The ancestors of the Hancock and Tompkins Wheelers were among the early settlers in Massachusetts. Three brothers came from Wales in 1738 (sic-probably 1638], and settled in Concord. Their names were Timothy, Ephraim and Thomas,  all distinguished themselves in the Indian wars of the time, their history, with that of their descendants, is closely interwoven, connected with that of many of the families of New England.

"Thomas Wheeler "the elder" was buried at Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England in 1634. Of his twelve children by two marriages, seven came to New England in the 1630's: Thomas, Elizabeth, Timothy, Susanna, Joseph, Ephraim, and Thomas (by second wife). Of these, both of the brothers Thomas and their brother Ephraim moved to Fairfield, Connecticut while the others remained in Concord, Massachusetts, except for the daughter Elizabeth, who settled in Lynn, Massachusetts, with her husband Allen Breed."

Review of "The Wheeler Family of Cranfield, England and Concord, Massachusetts and some Descendants of Sgt. Thomas Wheeler of Concord" by M. Wheeler Molyneaux (M. Wheeler Molyneaux, 4701 East Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90803-3113 $47.5) Nutmegger June 1993 p. 85]

Captain Timothy Wheeler had two horses shot under him in one of the encounters of King Philip's terrible war. A Captain Timothy Wheeler in 1775 had charge of colonial stores at Concord, saving them from capture.

In the last decade of the 18th century George Hubbell, with the family, left Massachusetts and came to Sidney, N.Y., where they staid a few years (and where he is buried).

They next located at the mouth of Sands creek near Shehocken, and in 1798 we find them at Partridge Island.

William, in 1804, married Eleanor Knox, of Massachusetts, a descendant or relative of General Knox, the aid(sic] of Washington, and lived at Partridge Island till 1814, when he removed to Deposit.

James had three sons, Leroy, Ebenezer and James; the first a physician, the second a lawyer, and the other a farmer, who occupies the homestead. The father died in 1854. Joseph Wheeler had three sons. Franklin, Milton and Rensselaer, the first two lawyers and the latter a farmer. He died in 1858.

Edmund Hubble settled at Ballstown, and George at Little Falls, near Hancock, where he married Paul Newton's daughter. He had two sons, Jefferson and Chester. Chester, his second son. was born in 1799, and is now (1879)  living in Deposit.) Jefferson went to the Legislature, and removed afterward to Honesdale, Pa.  Silas Wheeler  went west, Truman and Richard all lived in Hancock for several years. Truman and Richard removed to Tompkins. Richard died there, and Truman removed to Philadelphia, where he died.

One Joseph Wheeler was known as "Hatter Joe," while the other was called  "Innocent Joe."

John Wheeler, cousin to bachelor John, after residing for some years at Partridge Island, removed to or near Barryville. """""

JAMES A. LORD, farmer, post-office Lordville, is a life-long resident of this town, in which he was born April 25th, 1808. Mrs. Lord was formerly Miss  Almarine Miner, of Andes, who was born in 1816. They have nine children living.   Notes for JOHN LORD:

Family #21, page 82, Manchester Twnp., Wayne Co., Pennsylvania.  The age discrepancy could be questioned, except one Lord descendant said there were stories of a  John Lord who married an older woman after she had a child or two by him,  they lived "on the Pennsylvania side".  This family fits the story.   Trying to chase them thru a census track added to age discrpancy--adults AND children.  Both appear to be in Wayne Co., Pennsylvania, Manchester Twnp., 1880, he listed as 68--she as 73.  They have no identifying children in the home, but do have a 9 year old granddaughter,  Alma Dexter, she, her parents b.  Notes for HENRY HARPER THOMAS:

For a wonderful book on all these families, especially the Thomas, Tyler lines, full of reminiscences, seen and heard first hand, a glimpse of a way of life not to be seen again in our lifetimes--- "The Thomas Saga" by Marjorie Thomas Anderson-- is recommended.  Henry is her father, following  is a speck of  data from that book.

"Father had  been working for some time in western New York, building a government Indian school on the Allegheny Indian Reservation (Seneca). He was now at work on a new church in Salamanca (Seneca again), Catteraugus County, New York, that the Quakers were building for the Indians' use. The Quakers were very devoted to the Indians welfare".

His bride to be, Mary Elizabeth Norton,  traveled to Salamanca, where they were married in the Congregational Church.

27.  MARVIN4 WHEELER (ELIZABETH3 LORD, JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born 1804.  He married EMILY EDICK

  Notes for MARVIN WHEELER:

HON. MARVIN D. WHEELER, Inspector-in-Chief of Post-offices of the United States, is a native of Hancock, Delaware County, N. Y. His father, Marvin Wheeler, was the son of Frederick Wheeler, whose native place was New London, Conn. The family is of Welsh origin. Frederick Wheeler with several brothers, athletic and brave men, came to the Delaware Valley in 1795, being the first settlers on Partridge Island, now part of the town of Hancock. Frederick was married in New London to Mary Comstock, by whom he had four children, Marvin being the youngest. The others were Royal, Polly, and Corinda.

Marvin was born in 1804. At an early age he became acquainted with farm work, and also assisted his father in lumbering, later starting out for himself as a merchant and general trader. He was thrifty and far-sighted, qualities to which he owed much of his success in life. He became an extensive land-owner, and for years was Postmaster in Hancock. Originally counted with the Whigs, he became a Republican on the formation of that party. He married

The five children of Marvin and Emily (Edick) Wheeler were: Frederick M.; DeWitt C.; Evelyn Susan; and Marvin Duane, whose name appears at the head of this sketch. The two elder brothers are deceased. Frederick married Elizabeth Bull, of Milford, Conn., and had three children. Marvin D. Wheeler attended the schools of his native town, and later entered the military academy at Sing-Sing. After graduation he returned to Hancock, and, like his brothers, entered into business with his father. Early regarded by his fellow-townsmen as a young man of great promise, he served as Supervisor, and held other positions of trust, fulfilling his public duties to the entire satisfaction of the community. His advancement was rapid, and his fame soon extended beyond the limits of his native town. In the first years of President Harrison's administration he was appointed Inspector of the New York Post-office, and shortly afterward was made Inspector-General of Post-offices of the United States, which position he still holds under President Cleveland.

Notes for EMILY EDICK:       Emily Edick, daughter of Conrad and Elizabeth Edick, of Deposit. Conrad Edick was born at German Flats, Herkimer County. He entered the patriot army during the Revolutionary War, and was in active service much of the time until its close. His native village being burned in 1779 by a party of Tories and Indians under command of the infamous Brant, Mr. Edick moved with his step-father to Stone Arabia, Montgomery County; and later, in the winter of 1781, they removed to Greenbush near Albany. Mr. Edick was one of the force raised to avenge the Wyoming and Cherry Valley massacres. He took part in several engagements in which the enemy were repulsed with considerable loss. In the spring of 1781 he again enlisted for nine months' service, and went to Fort Plain, where he was employed as military express, and was often with scouting parties detached for dangerous service. In October, 1781, a large force of British, Tories, and Indians, under Walter Butler, attacked Johnstown, destroyed property, and killed many of the settlers. An expedition set out from Fort Rensselaer, under command of Colonel Willett, to avenge this massacre, Conrad Edick being numbered among the troops. They pursued the retreating foe and overtook them at Canada Creeks, about November 1, when a fierce battle ensued, the advantage being with the attacking force.

Mr. Edick was twice married. By his first marriage, to a Miss Whitaker, of Sanford, he had three children, as follows: Phebe, Jacob C., and Elizabeth. His second marriage was to Elizabeth Sneeden, and by her he had six children: Margaret; Roxanna; Sally, Emily, born February 22, 1808, who became Mrs. Marvin Wheeler; Jane M.; and Rachel P. In 1787 Mr. Edick settled about two miles below Deposit; but later, in 1801, he removed to Deposit village, where he died at an advanced age. He was greatly respected, and was a prominent member of the Masonic Order. During the anti-Masonic agitation secret meetings were often held in his house; and his Masonic apron is still preserved at the home of his descendant, Marvin D. Wheeler.

Children of MARVIN WHEELER and EMILY EDICK are:

                   i.       CLINTON5 WHEELER.    Dead before his father.

                  ii. GIRL WHEELER.

This John Lord may not belong to Abram.  Art Barber descends from Abraham's son, Stephen, and  they have no knowledge of this son, John. They could have rec'd their inheritance early--moved on.  They could have belonged biologically to another family member, but raised by Abraham--until someone solves this little "glitch"--we'll leave John here for the time being--allowing  a few of his descendants to claim Abraham as "their line."

  Notes for ALBERT LORD:

From "Old Veteran Calls," The Cameron County Press, 1910 - 1920:

"Mr. Albert Lord, of Cameron, came to Emporium last Friday to transact some business and celebrate his 77th birthday by calling on his old friends in town. The PRESS was one of the favored ones to enjoy a visit from the old veteran. We are always proud to welcome, at any time, these patriots--sometimes called in 1863, by the copperheads, "Lincoln's Hirelings"-- who suffered privations that this, the grandest government on the face of the earth, should not perish. We always feel like downing our hat when we pass by one of those patriots.

"Veteran Lord came to Cameron county in 1855 from Delaware Co., NY, and located at Sinnamahoning (then Clinton county). He enlisted at the outbreak of the rebellion in the 148th Penna Infantry, under Gen'l Jas. A. Beaver. Mr. Lord was confined in southern prisons for seven months [Libby Prison], and of course has suffered considerably from the effects of starvation and disease. We hope he may live to celebrate his 97th anniversary."_______________________________________

Albert, a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the justly famous Pennsylvania Bucktails, answered the last long roll, at his residence at Cameron last Sunday afternoon and departed to swell the ranks of that other Grand Army beyond the grave.

Mr. Lord was in the 84th year of his life and had been a resident of this county for many years. At the call to arms in the early 60s, he answered the call, serving his country valiantly throughout that bloody strife. For 14 months he languished in loathsome Libby prison. His death was due to paralysis. The funeral was held yesterday from the home.

July - August 1870 in Cameron Co., Pennsylvania.  She married JAMES SHAFFER Abt. 1865 in Pennsylvania.  He was born October 11, 1840 in Sinnemahoning, Cameron Co., Pennsylvania, and died April 25, 1923 in Renovo, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.

  Notes for ALICE LORD:

Marguerite Randolph's notes say-- Alice Lord "died,  I think, at Huntley Pa. buried on hill there". Does not say she was buried in Huntley Cemetery (was it on the hill?)

More information, no headstone for Alice has been found.  She died in the summer, at the height of farming season. Weather alone would have prohibited her being taken back to Delaware Co., NY for interment in either of the Lord cemeteries.  She died,  was buried, about 4 months after the birth of her son, Orville.  In Dec. the family lost the first born child, Orville's only brother at that time, and more than likely, that child was buried in the Mother's grave. A  monument may have been planned, and, in the ensuing new marriage, more children, time slipped by, it wasn't taken care of.

  Notes for JAMES SHAFFER:

All information about this line comes from  Denise Shaffer-Zito, who generously  sent not only her direct line information, but all she had recorded about the other immediate Lord family members who  lived around Alice.  Denise descends from Orville.

DEATH OF JAMES A. SHAFER AT THE RENOVO HOSPITAL

(Renovo Daily Record, April 26, 1923)

James A. Shafer, an aged and respected resident of South Renovo, died at the Renovo hospital at 2:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon of gangrene and diseases incident to advanced age. Mr. Shafer was born October 11, 1840, at Sinnemahoning, and resided there until about three years ago, having been engaged in farming. Mr. Shafer had his right foot frozen, which caused gangrene and as a result the foot was amputated at the Williamsport Hospital about four years ago. Some time ago gangrene developed in his left foot, and about six weeks ago he was taken to the Renovo Hospital for treatment. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and one daughter:  Orville Shafer, Benezette, Pa.; Ralph G. Shafer, Oil City, Pa.; John K. Shafer, South Renovo; and Miss Alice E. Shafer, of South Renovo; also by 7 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Luzerna Huntley of Emporium, Pa. The funeral will be held at 1 o'clock on Saturday afternoon at the residence of his son, John K. Shafer, No. 270 Susquehanna Avenue, South Renovo and will be conducted by Rev. Dr. B.A. Salter of the Methodist Church. Interment will be made in the cemetery at North Bend.

In the latter half of the 1800's there was a big development in camp meetings and revivals. The people of Sinnemahoning seem to have a knack of drawing large crowds. They had a big camp meeting ground where the railroad ran special trains to bring in the crowds. Several preachers would be there to care for the people. One preacher was a hometown man known as Speaker Jim Shaffer. It was no trouble to get Speaker Jim to preach, the job was to get him to stop. During the day they would offer prayers. When Speaker Jim started to pray the other preachers would say "Amen" when he scored a point. He prayed on and on. Finally the preachers would shout "AMEN" and close his prayer for him.

  Notes for ORVILLE HENRY SHAFFER:

Orville was  about 4 months old when his mother, Alice Lord, died.  The only Mother he knew, or remembered, was  his father's second wife, Ruth. Denise says she has several Thos of Orville, and that he looked like a firm, no nonsense, type of man.  When he was told the name of his new gr-granddaughter, Sharon Lee [Ward], Orville's response was, "Hmmph! Movie actress name."  He  ran a store in Benezette, Elk Co., PA for 50 years.

From The Daily Press,s St. Marys PA, Elk County Sesquicentennial Edition, August 18, 1993 (article donated by Martha Rucki of Benezette)

History of Benezette United Methodist Church, 1870-1970

. . . The history of Benezette Church would not be complete without mentioning several members whose time and effort helped keep our church going. In the y[e]ar 1919, Orville Shaffer, while the Rev. Forrest was minister, became treasurer. He worked hard to get the S.S.[Sunday School?] out of debt, he also became janitor that year and for 25 years he trudged up the hill at 5 a.m. during winter months to build a fire for S.S. and Church. He retired in 1944. He died in January 1952.

After Orville's retirement, Paul Hollingsworth took over this work and served faithfully until the time of his death in 1957. Orville and his family lived at  1923, Benezette, Elk Co., PA.  He and Agnes are both buried in The  Benezette Cemetery, Benezette, Elk Co, PA

  Notes for AGNES SEXTON:

Agnes' cause of death was cancer, possibly ovarian.  An infant is buried in the Benezette Cemetery surrounded by Agnes, Orville and Rhea (no dates on the tombstone).   Was the child Agnes' or Rhea's?
