Descendants of John Killam Kellam
Generation No. 1
John had appeared
in Preston about 1718, when he bought land of Samuel Reynolds (Bk. 3-pg
125.) He later made a mutual agreement to make a division of a
tract of land "which lyes within the limits of a certain deed of
sale which Samuel Reynolds late of Preston, gave to said John Killam"
John's will, written 9 Feb 1753, proved 1 Sept 1753 names wife: Hepsibah,
sons, Zadock, Amasa, Jeptha, Nathan and John, daughters: Sarah, Abigail,
Mercy, Hepsibah, and Olive Killam. Probate recorded Norwich, Vol.
I. Witnesses: Thomas Woodward, Joseph Bundy, Ebenezer Witter,
appeared (in court) on 1 Sept 1753. The will was probated 1 Feb 1754:
to beloved wife, Hepsibah Killam (probably the town household). To son,
Phineas Killam 20 S (around $5 at that time), to son, Zadock 20 S, to
son Amasa, 20 S, to son Nathan Killam, east end of farm with dwelling
house. To son, Jeptha, all the rest of my farm, on the west end
and with all buildings, 6 acres of woodland, and the other half of my
farming tools, my riding horse, saddle and bridle and all my cyder barrels
and casks. To my son, John Killam, $900 to be paid to him at age
21 and my will is that my son John should go to a trade at age 16 years.
To my daughter Sarah Rose, and my daughters Abigail, Mercy, Hepsibah,
Olive, all the moveable estate. Perhaps the older sons received their
portions as they left to establish their own homes. There was
some trouble over the estate and will, mentioned following. Information on this
came partly from Ricardo C. Hitchcock of Buhl, Idaho, in 1983.

Zadock Killam appears
among the names among the first of the settlers of the Wallenpaupack
Settlement, about 1774. He was probably one of the older ones
to pioneer the area. It seems 3 of the sons came with him,
while other members of the family, including his wife, arrived a bit
later on. This happened among a number of the men, makes sense,
the area was uncleared, there were no houses yet. Records show
he settled on Lot # 6, the time span being when the lands were
surveyed for Moses Killam, Sr., youngest of the sons who settled there.
When Ephraim Killam wrote his manuscript, he noted he "could
well remember when the old log house was standing upon this lot.
It stood a little north from the house "now occupied by George
N. Killam, and where he "now has his garden." "At
the time we remember it, it was used for cooking feed for the hogs,
and as a kind of work shop. It was built about 10 ft. high to
where the rafters rested. The poles supporting the upper or chamber
floor, being about two and a half feet lower down, a hall extended from
side to side through it and on either side of this hall were rooms.
The attic served for a sleeping room for the older children and work
hands. The fire place was large with stone walls built up for
the jambs and the pots, kettles used for cooking were suspended on trammels
supported on what was called the lugpole. In this house was a
fireplace and chimney in each end of the house, the western half
being used as the kitchen or room in which the cooking was done and
where the family ate their meals. We think this old house was
not taken down until about 1826 or 1827, and we remember one of the
men engaged in the work was seriously hurt by falling from the
building. We already mentioned the fact Zadock Killam and three
of his sons, the names of these being Ephraim, Silas and Moses, and
a daughter, Elizabeth."" "The settlers
for the most part left the Settlement in 1778, returning in 1783.
Elizabeth was not with them. Zadock lived with his son, Moses
for some years after the return, but at the time of his death had been
staying with his son, Silas Killam, having been with this son for a
few years."" (direct quotes from the Ephraim Killam

Jeptha inherited
his farm, land, and money from his father, making him one of the wealthiest
men in Preston. On 16 June 1755, his brother, Nathan Killam, quit
claimed all right to the tract of land left him under the same will
to Jeptha, described as "lying in a bog meadow to ye west of the
house where Jepthah now lives, about 5 acres." (Land records
7-22) Evidently Jepthah
died suddenly, because he died without a will. His wife, Phebe,
and Eliab Farnum, were appointed administrators of his estate.
On 12 October of that year, the administrators applied to the courts
for permission to sell part of the lands of the estate. It was
sold to the highest bidder, which was Nathan Killam. Phoebe Parke married
first, Jeptha Killam of Preston, Connecticut, where they lived.
At his death, she was co- administrator of his estate with
Eliab Farnham. She married second, Stephen Geer, a neighbor, AND

Patented land for
280 acres in Morgan Township, Greene Co., Pennsylvania--called "Sugar
Tree". Surveyed 1784. "Wana"
is the name given the community taken from the "kindly old Delaware
Indian chief" who formerly traversed Dunkard Creek, was well known
, fairly treated by the early settlers. This entire region was Indian
land, primarily settled by the Delaware, who at this time, were acting
as Peacekeepers for the Iroquois Confederacy. The land was
turned over to the white man, having been "bought" under
the Treaty of Fort Stanwyx (now Rome, NY) by the English. An Indian raid did
take place, brief, the Doddridge family was reputed to be slain in their
house. One of their sons escaped, Phineas Killum attempted
to divert attention, but, as the few Indians involved retreated, they
grabbed the boy, Willie, who was hiding under a rock--taking him
with them. Some years later, in 1793-1794- he was exchanged back,
but being raised with the Indians, had no desire to live/act as his "white"
neighbors, so " they could not rid him of the Indian Ways
of Life." The 1922 write up mentions Phineas took the
smaller boy who had escaped--but he isn't mentioned any further. Please keep
in mind, West Virginia wasn't formed until 1861--- the territory we
are dealing with was, in the time frame mentioned, STILL Virginia----which
extended into what is now central Ohio-- hearing these Kellams
may have come from "Virginia" doesn't indicate at all we mean
the Eastern Shore--home to an entire Kellam group not tied to these
by any known cords. Another point of
interest: Phineas probably had more children, unknown at this
point. The existence of at least two brothers has been raised by one
Joe "Blue Sky" Johnson, a Shoshone-Bannock (via his
Mother, Shawnee/Wyandot via his father) Indian client for whom
I did work a few years back. In discussing upper Kentucky, lower
Ohio, tribes, traveling with explorers (he descends from Sacajawea's
clan of Rogers and Clark fame) we were talking about other expeditions,
how necessary the Indians were to anyone tromping through their territory--my
mention of the Kellam's having a long affinity for marrying Native/Native
mix, gave rise to the oral history of Killen/Killeen brothers
who came from the east--the mountains-- were with a white expedition
on the Ohio, in Shawnee Territory. Their Mother was an Indain,
they "knew their way around, could speak to the Natives---
two married into the tribes, the other settled in Simon Girty's
old territory-- which would be--- upper Kentucky. Greene County, Pennsylvania
was named for Nathaniel Greene on Feb. 9, 1796. The county was born
when John MINOR sponsored a bill in which legislated that this southern
portion of Washington County, Pennsylvania become a separate county.
Waynesburg, the county seat is named after General "MAD" Anthony
Wayne who led the army in 1784 to defeat the Indians in the Northwest
territory, what today is the Ohio Valley. Greene County, Pennsylvania
is located in the southwestern corner of the state of Pennsylvania.
It's bordered by the counties of Washington to the north, Fayette to
the east, Monongalia County, West Virginia to the south and Marshall
County, West Virginia to the west. At one time, Greene County was part
of Mononghela County, Virginia. This part of the state was once disputed
with Virginia in 1800. Greene County was also known as part of the Ohio
Company area very early. For research purposes prior to 1800 look in
Washington County, Pennsylvania and Monongalia County, West Virginia
and Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Notes for UNKNOWN

it.

The lot surveyed
for Ephraim was # 8. In conjunction with John Pellett, jr.,
an improvement on Lot # 12 was made, being surveyed in both names. They
divided this lot, and Ephraim cleared a small field of about 4 acres,
which some years later was covered with good growth of "sap"
pine 10 to 20 in. around, some as tall as 100 ft. When his son,
Ira died young, Ephraim willed his property to Powell and Charles, the
two (living) sons of Ira. His signature was barely legible, altho
speculation by Edith Kellam Brown's notes was he couldn't write, the
age /disease that killed him (he died of cancer---EK manuscript) is
more likely responsible. According to
Ephraim Killam's writings, she died in New York State while visiting
her sons.

Notes for MOSES
SR.
KELLAM: As a young man, Moses
resided in Goshen, NY. before moving back into the Wallenpaupack Settlement.
There he was active, becoming well known in business, political circles.
He served for some years as the Justice of the Peace, later taken on
by his son, Moses. Until the organization of Pike Co., (1814)
he was a time agent under Coldwater of Philadelphia for the sale of
the unsettled portions of the manor of W-P as seen from the recital
of deeds on his return to W-P. In 1783 he took charge of the business,
where lands were surveyed 1805, lot # 6 was surveyed for him. He built
a saw and grist mill on the Mill Brook. Mary's (Polly) tombstone
reads she was 69 years old when she died, putting her age at the time
of her marriage abt 32, rather late. The family descendant records
give her year of birth as between 1755-1759, which seems more reasonable. Children of MOSES

Jeptha left Preston,
probably moving to Pike Co., Pennsylvania about 1772, when his cousins,
Zadock Killam, with his wife, Hannah, their sons, Moses Killam,
Ephraim Killam and Silas Killam moved there from Connecticut.
The families remained at Paupeck until the Revolutionary activities
of July 1776 at Wyoming forced them to consider moving to Orange
Co., New York, living in the Minisink Valley prior to settling
there until the war was over. (1783) Alfred Mathews "History
of Wayne, Pike and Monroe Counties, Pennsylvania" (1886), pg. 948..."In
the spring of 1779 five young men went back to the settlement to make
maple sugar; Ephraim Killam, Jeptha Killam, Silas Killam..." during
which visit they were attacked by Indians, Ephraim was wounded
in the arm. A tax list for Lackaway,
Westmoreland District (of Connecticut) which included the land
now in Pike County, Pennsylvania, in 1778 lists Zadock Killam, Moses
Killam, Ephraim Killam, Jeptha Killam and John Killam. Records of Jeptha's
family are found in the Minisink-Machackemeck Dutch Reformed Church
from 1786 to 1792. Census records indicate several of the early
children were actually born in New Jersey.

She, her family, as was often the custom, were baptized in the Dutch
Reform Church, given names of their sponsors, or their sponsors families.
This makes it difficult to separate the actual European individuals
from the Native People who were baptized in the Church. Mary disappears after
the 1810 Pennsylvania census. She could have remarried, gone to
live with one of the children. She was about 45 years of age at
this time---young for any one in this family to die.

From the Manuscript
of Ephraim Kellum, written between 1850 and 1888 when he died.
Copied ver batim from the typed copy in the possession of Sheila S.
Stover, a gift of Karen Stanton. ""Lebbeus
Killam son of John and Sally Killam married Sophie Ansley, daughter
of Simeon and Sarah Ansley. We know very little as to the children
of this family, have heard that their oldest son was about ten years
old when they moved from the Settlement and settled in Canada.
His name was Jason. very discreditable
to himself, and very surprising to his neighbors who had always looked
upon him as above suspicion. His prosperity however in a worldy
manner proved afterward to be at the expense of several of his neighbors.
His departure from the Settlement was sudden and unexpected to his neighbors,
and they could scarcely realize the fact their losses could be charged
to his gain, and this was carried on for years without the neighbors
suspecting anything was wrong with this man, such was their confidence
in his integrity. Lebbeus visited the
Settlement only one time after he took his family and settled in Canada.
But did not stay long visiting only his sister whose husband had aided
him in his time of greatest need. After he settled in Canada he
mended his ways and was said to become a different man. He gained
deserved respect from the people among when he settled, his family were
very much respected, and we have learned of his descendants now
living they are much respected and stand well in the community in which
they live. (entries in Court
Minutes confirm the surface of this story. By selling his land
to the family, acceptable restitution was arranged, he was allowed
to leave without a public hearing) Geo & Margaret

For the lines down
from Asa, I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Ron Kellems, Orie Kelm,
Jr., Pat Bruner, Georgia Scott Crawley. Peripherally to Beth Moore and
Jim Bedwell, whose research appeared in information sent me. Without
their generosity, enthusiasm, sharing, encouragement, support, there
is no way this line could have come together. The packets of information
sent to be included pushed the printing back by a few months--I
felt there was no way in good conscience, it could go to press
without all of it entered/placed, to the best of our collective abilities. Merging of material
by GEDCOM ended up being problematical, caused glitches. Orie
and Ron had at proofing for me, trying to catch the errors, duplicates,
make a few suggestions on text-- etc. Easter Holiday weekend (2001),
no less. Even though further
work is needed to elaborate on Zadoc and Phineas, the data available,
the migration pattern, indicate this line is correct as entered.
Should there be proof, disproof, more information, it's welcome---

HINCH: Per Jesse Randolph
Kellems- wife was Eleanor Hinch married in 1783 (actual date was 1788)
. May have had two wives with Eleanor being second. If this is
true, it would appear Asa wasn't married long the first time---he was
only abt 23 when he married Eleanor---unless the age of Asa is off.

This Isaac is not proven, may not belong
here, most of the descendants records have him listed.
Record reads "Killiam".
Marriage performed by Thomas J. Chelton;
ages certified by Jas. Duffert, from Hardin Co. Marriages P. 28.
I have copy of marriage license, it was signed Charles Killiam, but
in the body it is spelled Kellam. (olk, Jr.) Information
and dates also from Ron Kellems.
Moved to Perry Co., Indiana by 1846.
Signed up for Charles pension, bounty land. Son, Charles,
was a witness as who she was.
Census of 1850 (Micro roll #100-National
Arch) shows Samuel to be age 50, Farmer and born in Ky. Census
of 1860 (Micro Roll, #162-National Arch) shows family with wife Louisa
only, no Samuel. Presumably he died before 1860.
All indications are Samuel had two
wives. Samuel's first son Ralph was a half brother to Jonathan
and his birth date precedes Samuel's marriage to Louisa Bright.
There is also indication Samuel's first wife was Mary Huddleston, md.
2/17/1819 Hardin Co.,Ky. (Info from Beth Moore) However,
info from Debbie Jackson said Maggie told her that her (Maggie's) Grandparents
were Samuel and Melissa Hutchinson.
"I have a copy of the marriage bond
and license. The name is spelled Kelm, and signature of Samuel
Kelm. The Broderbund CD-2 says name is Helm, which I think is
incorrect. It is likely there were other children by Mary".
(olkjr) (may have been called Melissa by family? (Debbie
Jackson notes) Mary probably had other children, none known or
shown at this time. (April 2001)
Louisa's probate records were in the Marshall,
Ill Courthouse. She may have
been Samuel's 2nd wife? Her name
was spelled Bright and also Brite. She was not buried in the same
Melrose Cemetery as was Samuel.
Asa Jr. shows in census records along with
Asa Sr.--Both are in Breckinridge Co. 1830 or 1840 Census. Info on this

This name was sent as a son to Asa, but
without a source/record notation. Jefferson, born about 1807 Hardin
County, married Ann (Nancy)who was born about 1817 in Ky. They
lived in Breckinridge County through 1850 census, and had 5 children.
This information comes from Beth Moore Is this information correct??
particularly that Jefferson is the son of Asa-- needs work--Okelm on
4/8/1996)
This information from June Vance, (codybug10@aol.com),
and Beth Moore. The second marriage of Hinch is recorded at the
Perry Co. court house. Both Hinch, his second wife, Rebecca, were alive
in 1878, because at that time they were receiving pension monies for
Rebecca's 2 children by her first husband on his Civil War service.
Hinch and Rebecca had been awarded custody of them. (under the
law she would not automatically have been awarded custody of her own
children, usually). By 1880 they may have been dead, because Alfred
Crutchfield was then guardian for the children. June Codybug states
the pension and court records seem to suggest there many have been a
problem with the received funds, some of it having to be paid back.
Info from Beth Moore.
Rebecca had 2 children by her first husband
who died in the Civil War. It is not known for sure if she had children
by Hinch Kellam.
Info from Beth Moore.

Notes for IRA
KELLAM: Ira, said to have
fathered 10 children, is the only one of this immediate family who stayed
in Paupeck. ("History of Wayne, Pike and Monroe" c1886)
He settled on lands originally held by his father, but never held title
to them. Like his relations--all sides, he was a farmer,
a lumberman. He bought part of lot # 10, and 70 acres on the West
Side of the Wallenpaupack Creek. He also had 1/3rd interest in
a tract on the Purdy Beaverdam Brook. He seems quite successful
for a business man considering the era in which he lived.
Measles are still deadly, and they killed him at the age of 41. After Ira died, Harriet
remarried, and went to Michigan, taking some of the children with her.

EKB's notes state Lucy was erroneously
given to Moses Killam in the Howard Kimble book, but this was
incorrect. The naming patterns make it difficult, often, to put
the children in the correct families.
Ephraim settled at the Narrows, where he
built a grist mill, clearing land that is south of where the railroad
tracks went in. His log house left traces of it's foundation and the
big frame house stood until 1950, when it was taken down for it's lumber.
Ephraim served with the Pennsylvania 5th,
attaining the rank of Capt. He is mentioned in Pennsylvania Archives,
Series 6, Vol. IV, pg. 693--the Brigade was mustered on 20 Oct 1798.

Marcus N.B. Killam is representative of
one of the oldest and most prominent, prolific, pioneer families of
North Eastern Pennsylvania. He was born in Palmyra Township, Pike
Co., (Born at the time the French were better liked than the English,
his name of Marcus Napolean Bonaparte was the result.) living his entire
life in this rural area. He attended the "common" schools
available, assisting his father in the work of the farm, the lumbering
business until her was about 30---at which time he took full charge
of both. The family owned large tracts of valuable timber, in
both Pike and Wayne Cos. In 1869 Marcus sold 3, 400 acres to Farnham
Collingwood and Co., besides houses, 100 acres of cleared land, and
other property he operated a saw mill he owned for many years,
was active in the lumbering business until old age. He and his
wife settled on a 500 acres tract he'd purchased, living quietly, with
great comfort and style. He oversaw the lumber work until his
very late years, was reputed to have an active mind, interest in politics
and events of the day (Beers)

III KELLAM:
Ephraim III, a surveyor and justice of
the peace in Hawley, gave great time and attention to the early settlers
of Wallen-Paupack. He was probably one of the most qualified,
coming from a family with close ties by intermarriage and blood
to all the other settling families, and generationally doing business
within the settlement, personally or professionally. Ephraim wrote
reminiscences of most of the settlers. He wrote specifically
of his double house, built by roofing over the stone steps which served
two houses--his, and Ira Killam's which were built just alike, close
enough together so one set of outside stone steps could serve both.
Once Ira died, the widow sold to Moses, Jr, making him the proprietor
of the Old Killam Homestead claims of both Zadock and his son, Ephraim
who was Ira's father, and lived with Moses the 3 years he had
left after 1833 when Ira's widow moved to Michigan and Ira's son, Powell,
moved onto a farm west of the Paupack, in Wayne Co.,

GEER:
John C. Geer is listed in the records as
having Mary for his Mother. However, from the dates of the births
of the children, it seems likely he was the last born of Hannah Kimball,
perhaps she died at his birth. Often, babies raised by a rapidly married
2nd wife grew up remembering the Mother they had, not the one they lost
so early.

Abt. 1820 in Wayne Co. , Pennsylvania. She was born Abt. 1802
in Pennsylvania. Peter settled on
Blooming Grove Creek, near what is currently Millville, where he farmed,
lumbered. the family later settled at Equinunk. He, the children
left at home, listed on the 1850 census for Wayne Co., PA
He is surrounded by his Tyler in-laws- family # 139. The
Ephraim Killam manuscript states he was married to an Eleanor Shimer,
but this has not been given anywhere else to date.

Living with E.L. Calkins, his wife, Hannah

her marriage incorrectly as to George Morgan--- states she had no children.
Correct information per tombstone in cemetery. Maureen Crane (also

John was christened
in Bedford, Westchester Co., New York 13 July, 1788--indicating the
family was at least, briefly, in this area. John Kellam
(Killam) was assessed in 1827 for 90 acres of improved land. He had
settled, in 1816, at Pine Flat. In 1880, he was living with his daughter,
Commertha Doyle. John died at the age of 90, in 1877, a conflicting
date as to his death. 1874 date is more likely correct. Wayne Co.,

d. May 04, 1871, Damascus, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania ae 59.
There has been some discussion as to the
correct name of Mary Kellam. The Lukens family researcher records
stated her to be a Mary Sophia. However, there was NO Sophia family
in the area, state, before, or after. Several branches,
not personally knowing of one another, stated--Derrick Lukens wife was
Mary Kellam. Mrs .Paula E. Prindle, of Afton, NY, wrote
(1981), she descended for Derrick Lukens, his wife, Mary Kellam,
Derrick was the son of Polly North, who had also md. a Derrick
Lukens. Mary was 31 when she appears to have had her first child
by Derrick Lukens. Was she a late marry-er, or did she have a husband
before Derrick--widowed early with no children, perhaps? Gives her age
as 63 in June of 1880, when she is shown living with her daughter, son
in law, the Paul Ross' family. The portrait photo
of her has survived in the family of Patty Hankins, a desc., on it was
written, "Mary (Polly) Kellam Lukens."

marrier", as was his son. Living alone, 1860 Census, #280
- listed as "retired country Gentleman". John owned
the Hankins Hotel, was killed when he fell down the stairs in
the hotel. (letter, Emadale Kellam)
Residing Windsor, Broome Co., New York
1850, pg. 220 of the census. In 1860, he was living Fremont, Sulivan
Co., New York, giving his occupation as Lumberman. He seemed
to be boarding with Susan Hankins. Altho not formally documented as
yet, it appears this would be the Hankins Hotel, Hankins, New York--owned
first by Susan Hankins, widow of John, and later by John Kellam, his
wife, Frances ( Shafer).

Marriages from Delhi Republican Newspapers,
1860 - 1869 Electronic File by Alan Malz
Notes for JULIA
A.
NILES:
Two of her daughters married: one
to C.F. Geary, whose home she died in, and one married E.O. Cole.
The obituary does not mention maiden names of anyone, nor when
her husband died, but does say, they moved to Ridgeway in 1888.
Family records give Niles for her last name, but her obituary, minister's
return for the marriage stated Lukins. With so much intermarriage, cousinship
relationships, it would be an easy error.

George lived at Bramens,
but settled at Pine Flat where he engaged intensely in farming, lumbering,
and mercantile business. He was considered very eccentric, he
owned a large mansion, where he had lived in solitude. He
died a very old man, the farm and mansion eventually passed into the
hands of a Joseph Ross, who was probably a relative. Was George's
unknown wife a Ross, making this a natural progression of inheritance?
Was she a Lukins, accounting for the name of his supposed 1st born son?
The Lukens and Ross intermarried often--again, this would account for
where the mansion and land ended up. 1840 Federal

"History of
Wayne, Pike and Monroe Counties" (1886) states " Jacob settled
on the Delaware above the mouth of Little Equinunk Creek, where he cleared
a large farm."
Jacob was the
principal businessman of his area, one of the most generous and
enterprising of citizens in Wayne County (PA). Jacob was instrumental
in laying out the old State Road, leading from Philadelphia to Hale's
Eddy, New York, on the Delaware River. Much of it is still in
use today. Jacob had no formal schooling, but had acquired, via
his extensive business and area dealings, an excellent knowledge
of men, affairs and business methods. He was known for a phenomenal
memory, and it was said of him---- he would, without a note or figure
on the books, settle correctly any business done during the year. Jacob his wife,
Hannah (Pierce) Kellam, were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church,
even though her families religious background was Dutch Reform. Jacob died in his
own home. He didn't have a will---rather odd, considering he had always
been a good businessman and forward in his views. He had acquired
over 1,700 acres, which contained his mills, buildings.
Due to the court, legal, attorneys, fees (things don't change
much, do they?) his large estate was so depleted there was next to nothing
left for his heirs. His wife, Hannah, died at the home of
their son, Jeptha. Both deaths occurred at Little Equinunk, and,
according to their gt.gt. grandson, Larence Manning Kellam, they were
interred in the private Kellam Cemetery, near Kellams Bridge -
Stalker. A monument was later erected at the cemetery over the
state line near Long Eddy, Sullivan Co., New York, (left hand side,
as one drives North towards Hancock) giving rise to the
oft made error they are buried there. as cited, Bible of Jacob Kellam, his
wife, Hannah Pierce Kellam, owned by the author family records, letters, obituaries,

William moved back to Jacob's land after
his death, no doubt due to all the problems with the estate--he WAS
the eldest son. There they remained, 1872 thru the end of the decade, when
the land was put up for auction to settle Jacob's estate--- purchased
by George C. Waller, his wife, Elizabeth (Lizzie).
Jeptha has been a topic of conversation
among descendants over the years. He was a rafter, logger, "rough
as a cob" in the words of one of the older Lord men,
( mid 1980s.) He was also said to be charming, "a real good
looker", tall-- with a dark complexion, hair, unusually blue
eyes not common in the Kellam family--at least the ones in memory.
Through his marriage into the Parsons family
of Merideth, in Delaware Co., he was also peripherally involved
in some of their milling work. Once he had cleared the 100 acres, he
needed more timber, moved his family up into Delaware Co., New York.
(Upper branch of the Delaware) Jeptha is on the 1860 New York census
living in Delhi with his wife, Elvira, their first born child, Hannah
Parsons Kellam, age 2.
From Hancock Herald , February 16, 1939: "Fifty
Years Ago, Feb. 14, 1889"
Jeptha is buried in Long Eddy Cemetery,
Sullivan Co., New York. His obituary read: "The following
is from the pen of an esteemed reader in Long Eddy."
He was a man of much intelligence, good
judgement -- affable and pleasing in his manner, and a model of
industry, sobriety and energy. His "excellent wife" passed
on before, a few years since, and it was a singular circumstance that
the morning before he died, he spoke her name, and upon being asked
if he saw her, said " that he did and that he wanted to go to where
she was."

Sources as stated/quoted.
Elvira was born in Merideth, New York,
raised there and in nearby Franklin-the only girl in a family of boys.
She was educated at the Franklin Academy. On the 1850 census,
the family can be found living in Delaware Co., where her husband, Jeptha,
had purchased some land. He was from a rafting family, his
family having established the rafting on the Delaware River two generations
prior. They then lived in Long Eddy, New York, where he was both
a farmer, and a rafter--referred to in the history of the rafting as "Jep
Kellam", he was considered quite a steersman.
There was a period when Elvira was alone
with several small children, didn't even know for certain where he was.
Her letters to her sister in law, Barilla Kellam of Philadelphia are
in the possession of the author /compiler of this book. They show
her to be well educated, capable, above all, devoted and patient, with
a delightful sense of humor and enjoyment of pranks. Elvira
looked after her home, garden, infant children, friend without reported/recorded
complaint.

the birthdate as 1805, but family notes from Lawrence Kellam, give it
as 1803. The numerals 3 and 5 are easily mistaken/misread.
Jeptha's estate was in probate in 1804, an administrator named,
the 1803 date is more likely. I haven't seen a notation this Jeptha
was born posthoumusly.

Mark is in Salem Twnp., Wayne Co. on 1880
census. 1910 shows him with young children as a widower. He seems
to have outlived 2 wives.
EK Ms mentions Hannah as being "late
Wise (Weis) "- she -was married prior to Mark He also
has 2 daughters that are not quite accounted for.
Was evidently the widow Thornton.
In the EBK notes she is listed as Frances Rosemary Beardsley Thornton.
Eunice moved to Leonardsville
after her marriage, taking the 2 little brothers, Moses and Aaron, who
were orphaned. Two of her brothers had recently married, were
setting up their own homes. John built the first
canal boat in 1830. John Edwards opened a boat bottom at
a point below Honesdale. He made the samll ten ton canal boats
, the big boat time not yet on the rise. This early boat
bottom point was probably Pidgeon roost. Pennsylvania Coal Co.
opened their 47 mile Gravity R.R. in 1850, which affecgted the canal
business. (EKB notes) Children of EUNICE
